**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Wed Mar 17 02:59:56 2021 Mar 17 07:13:59 Can we try to implement Vulkan on the beaglebone ai? Since it has a better performance than Opengl and is also designed to be very low-level, giving better control over the hardware with very low driver overhead. Mar 17 07:51:33 Can you please look if the Vulkan api already support the 3d accelerator of BBAI? Mar 17 07:51:33 If you already did please let us know what are your findings :) Mar 17 09:31:01 Yes sure, i'll research more about it and get back to you'll Mar 17 14:47:49 Hi All! Mar 17 14:54:46 * YadnikBendale[m] < https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/vtGvTMGtJkEOMbZfAXauKQSp/message.txt > Mar 17 14:55:55 So i think we should proceed with openGL only Mar 17 14:56:13 I am mentoring for BeagleBoard.org this year, happy to answer any questions about the program that potential students may have. Mar 17 14:57:00 Was a BeagleBoard.org GSoC student myself in 2014 :) and since 2015 I have been a mentor here. Mar 17 14:59:04 I am usually available during evenings at Indian Standard Time +0530 Mar 17 15:16:37 * Abhishek[m]_ < https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/wUceAudayvQnoBWOLBJUYwNr/message.txt > Mar 17 15:48:07 gm all. with US daylight savings, weekly meetings/office-hours should be starting in 45 minutes. Mar 17 15:51:28 Namaste 🙏 excited for today's meet :) Mar 17 16:15:12 Hello all. Mar 17 16:18:00 Hello Mar 17 16:18:29 Hello everyone :) Mar 17 16:19:29 Hi everyone Mar 17 16:24:06 How about virtual windowing over tty with pocketbeagle? Mar 17 16:26:37 Configurable gui application running on host Mar 17 16:37:41 Hi @hensersa! Mar 17 16:37:58 Welcome everyone Mar 17 16:40:44 howdy cwicks[m] ! Mar 17 16:41:57 timeline reminder: https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/timeline Mar 17 16:42:13 now... "Potential student participants discuss application ideas with mentoring organizations" Mar 17 16:42:56 March 29 18:00 UTC Student application period begins Mar 17 16:45:26 a number of students have already shown up.... we should be telling them about this office hour every week. Mar 17 16:45:52 they should be checking in here to help refine their proposal. Mar 17 16:47:16 I need some help creating a proposal template for this year on elinux.org. getting a timeline we can use to make students accountable on deliverables is critical, as is communicating the need for intro/completion presentations. Mar 17 16:49:11 giuliomoro[m]: welcome! Mar 17 16:49:29 giuliomoro[m]: have you had a chance to add ideas to the wiki? Mar 17 16:52:26 Are there any first tasks before application? Mar 17 16:53:23 There was already mentioned regarding cross platform compilation hello world Mar 17 16:55:59 yeah, did you complete it ? Mar 17 16:56:24 Nope. Will do it asap Mar 17 16:56:25 If you have a kernel based project, you should try making some kernel module Mar 17 16:56:45 I remember you have a pocketbeagle with you Mar 17 16:56:55 Yes. I am making a bmp_280 ko Mar 17 16:57:06 m_w doesn't seem to be logged in. Mar 17 17:00:17 dinuxbg, hendersa, VaishnavMA[m], pratimu[m]: will you be mentoring this year? Mar 17 17:00:38 dinuxbg: it could be good to advance the gcc code for any issues you have. Mar 17 17:00:45 Sure. I figured I'd just jump on some project and help out. Mar 17 17:04:06 jkridner_: yes gladly, I'm free during the summer, have added some stuff to the ideas list Mar 17 17:05:25 cwicks[m]: other than proposal template, ideas and identifying mentors, what else do we need now? Mar 17 17:11:33 jkridner_: you had said you will look for a local beagleboard supplier in India, as generally lot of students are india Mar 17 17:11:36 * jkridner_: you had said you will look for a local beagleboard supplier in India, as generally lot of students are indian Mar 17 17:12:12 Pretty quiet in here. Do we have some students in here that are going to apply? Mar 17 17:12:21 vedant16[m]: do you have anyone that currently distributes Beagle stuff? maybe if we contact them early, we can get them to buy stock of things like the Grove Kit. Mar 17 17:12:27 Or are the students waiting to see what additional project ideas pop up? Mar 17 17:12:50 I think my biggest wish would be that the mentors find which projects they really are excited about and talk them up here as much as they can. Mar 17 17:12:58 The best advice that I can offer any students interested in GSoC is to start your proposal *now*. Mar 17 17:13:16 Looks through the topics listed on the elinux page and see if anything catches your interest. Mar 17 17:13:27 I'd recommend this supplier https://robu.in/ Mar 17 17:13:40 If you want to do something that is a variation on a theme of a listed topic, put in a proposal for it. Mar 17 17:14:13 In the past, students who don't get accepted do one or more of the following: Mar 17 17:14:16 Second big wish. Is to reach out to student groups and let people know to come here to chat and how beagle is the best GSiC group to work with. 😃 Mar 17 17:14:39 1. Try to pass off previous school projects as something to do for GSoC. The work is already done. Mar 17 17:14:56 2. Give us a half page "proposal" one hour before the deadline. Mar 17 17:15:02 Silly autocorrect. GSoC Mar 17 17:15:21 3. Give us a generic proposal that was sent to every other org that has few details on deliverables or schedule. Mar 17 17:15:52 4. Never talk to us in IRC or in the Google Group. They just put in a proposal without ever "meeting" the Beagle community. Mar 17 17:16:31 GSoC is a great opportunity. Please come and *talk* with us to learnmore about it and how you can contribute during GSoC. Mar 17 17:17:12 hendersa: all great suggestions. can you put them on bbb.io/gsocideas ? Mar 17 17:17:27 Sure thing. Mar 17 17:18:04 vedant16[m]: I cannot create an account on robu.in because I don't have a phone # in India. :-( Mar 17 17:18:49 Can you send them a support request on our behalf to stock some components now for GSoC? We can start getting them some items now so they can distribute when projects are chosen. Mar 17 17:19:36 To build on this, the benefit of starting your proposal right now is that you can get it mentor reviewed early and can refine it as much as possible for the final submission Mar 17 17:20:01 Oops, I have a account, If you need access let me know. Mar 17 17:20:12 cwicks: Sure Mar 17 17:20:23 Yes, I can. It will be better if it is sent from a email with @beagleboard.org Mar 17 17:20:40 We have some exciting new platforms this year. Would one of the mentors like to comment here about the fun of working with Beagle as a good GSoC org Because we have an embedded SW Mar 17 17:21:34 I would like to, I got exposed to so many new things last year working with beagleboard, and the best part got a lot of beagleboard hardware :))) Mar 17 17:24:30 * vedant16[m] uploaded an image: (166KiB) < https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/zYYaYSzSKjoHWEdKBCJfMNdZ/20210317_225328_7075714395939893014.jpg > Mar 17 17:24:50 Just to get you excited, this is the amazing piece of hardware I worked on :) Mar 17 17:24:59 That's awesome Mar 17 17:29:57 That's true for my project also, specifically i got to know a lot about device tree along with some knowledge of kernel compilation, U-Boot, code segmentation, and many other concepts related to embedded Linux. As a biotechnology student who never worked on embedded Linux before, it was quite challenging but i loved it very much. It was truly a fantastic experience for me. Highly recommended for electronics Mar 17 17:29:57 enthusiasts out there 👍 Mar 17 17:37:44 Agree with vedant16 and lorforlinux. Working with beagleboard opened a lot of doors for me, working with embedded I learned a lot as a developer that I can apply elsewhere too. And the people are awesome and always keep you motivated. The fact that most students want to help mentor the next gsoc batch speaks for how much fun they had :) Mar 17 17:38:53 https://elinux.org/BeagleBoard/GSoC/Ideas-2021#How_to_write_a_successful_proposal Mar 17 17:39:15 Mentors, feel free to add onto that with your own advice. **** ENDING LOGGING AT Thu Mar 18 02:59:56 2021
