**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Tue Dec 18 02:59:58 2012 Dec 18 03:00:05 some folks think the lower frame rate gives a more film-like feel. Dec 18 03:00:06 why is "movie" all the sudden wrong or fake looking if it's more than 24. I just don't get it. Dec 18 03:00:11 sure it does Dec 18 03:00:28 because theyve #defined fim to mean slow frame rate :) Dec 18 03:00:33 film Dec 18 03:00:50 "I like grainy images and jerky motion" Dec 18 03:01:02 yeah Dec 18 03:01:23 because michael bay needs more film to make things explode Dec 18 03:01:32 and I'd get the "it's what you're used to" argument, if TV were the same way. I think most people see more hours of TV than movies (cue the people who are itching to say that they don't watch TV) Dec 18 03:01:37 I understand that Cameron is going to do the next Avatar in 60fps. Dec 18 03:02:15 I VFPS Dec 18 03:02:19 I want VFPS Dec 18 03:02:22 one argument I heard that did kinda make sense: Soap operas are done in 60fps video and have a certain cheezy feel to them Dec 18 03:02:46 so anything that makes a movie look like a soap opera = bad. Dec 18 03:02:48 I read one guy say that the movie industry doesn't want people used to higher frame rates because it invalidates all the older movies (ie: people won't buy DVDs etc). Dec 18 03:02:56 BS Dec 18 03:03:13 really/ Dec 18 03:03:15 ? Dec 18 03:03:23 I can kind of see it. "I can't watch old stuff... too jerky" Dec 18 03:03:39 I dunno. How many DVDs of old movies get sold compared to new. Dec 18 03:03:44 probably much less. Dec 18 03:03:47 That gives the movie industry an excuse to remaster everything with higher rates and sell them to you again. Dec 18 03:04:08 and that's exactly what another commenter said. Although It's hard to make more frames, but they do manage to do it. Dec 18 03:04:22 Interpolation isn't too tough Dec 18 03:04:36 so the soap opera thing.. is it the 60 Hz that makes soap operas look cheezy, or some other effects/lighting, etc? Dec 18 03:04:46 I've heard the 60Hz thing before Dec 18 03:04:54 not sure I believe it's the whole story Dec 18 03:05:06 I have seen some TV's that seem to make everything look weird like a soap opera Dec 18 03:05:08 well I'll give you that the lighting and color gamut of soap operas was always "off" Dec 18 03:05:21 everything was top-lit and kinda washed-out. Dec 18 03:05:27 I've heard for effective 3d you really need 120fps Dec 18 03:05:50 60 is based on the nyquist frequency Dec 18 03:06:09 buh-whut? Dec 18 03:06:13 I thought it was based on 60Hz power in the US, which is why in the UK they have 50Hz TV Dec 18 03:06:30 easier to make old CRTs, etc. Dec 18 03:06:31 yep except now NTSC frame-rate is 59.95Hz Dec 18 03:06:37 actually, US NTSC is not 60Hz Dec 18 03:06:39 so you still get a cycle-crawl. Dec 18 03:06:49 it is 59ish to make it a multiple of colorburst Dec 18 03:07:02 value was choosen to make the old power line locked B&W sets work Dec 18 03:07:50 or if you've got hum in your RF section you'll see a beat frequency crawling across the image top->bottom. Dec 18 03:37:49 beer! Dec 18 03:41:11 beer! Dec 18 04:35:02 I'd like a snack Dec 18 04:35:08 it's about time for breakfast Dec 18 04:35:25 a bagle would be nice Dec 18 04:35:30 maybe grilled Dec 18 04:35:39 some kind of cheesy bits inside Dec 18 04:35:52 meh.. bedtime more like Dec 18 04:40:06 sup hackers Dec 18 04:43:46 Quick question-- how do I go about pulling the kernel headers for an older version of the kernel? Trying to compile a driver for a box that is running an old version. Dec 18 04:45:20 go to kernel.org and look for the version you want Dec 18 04:46:19 ... unless it's something like ubuntu Dec 18 04:46:44 its ubuntu D: Dec 18 04:47:13 you go and find your distriptor and take them up on the written offer for the exact source Dec 18 04:47:19 distributor Dec 18 04:47:23 I'm looking for 3.2.18-psp14 Dec 18 04:49:10 Not sure what you mean, ds2 Dec 18 04:53:05 <_av500_> CareBear\: grilled beagle? Dec 18 04:53:39 <_av500_> mranostay: beer! Dec 18 05:01:32 too much bones Dec 18 05:04:56 _av500_ : prefer bagle :) Dec 18 05:05:06 much more tasty Dec 18 05:06:36 CareBear\: So we've got these cranberry bagels now. They're awesome. Christmas only :( Dec 18 05:06:53 CareBear\: and last week, my toaster crapped out :( Dec 18 05:07:17 alan_o: no spare x86 boards? Dec 18 05:08:03 ds2: hehe.... not quite hot enough I think. It's a toaster oven. The bottom elements still work, but the top ones won't come on. I lowered the rack and put the bagels face down. Still not quite hot enough. Dec 18 05:08:24 just go multicore Dec 18 05:08:50 It would be nice if I could divert some of the heat off my PC to my tea mug or something Dec 18 05:09:10 didn't you hear the news? the new Atom is lower power and faster than ARM. We'll all be converting soon. Dec 18 05:09:33 my 8051's don't heat up at all Dec 18 05:09:52 emeb_mac: Do you think that's coming one day? Dec 18 05:10:39 I don't know enough to say yes or no, but it seems like Intel has gotten good at coming back from being beaten. I thought they were done with the Athlon64 stuff was so good, and lower power and cheaper. Dec 18 05:10:47 alan_o: https://semiaccurate.com/2012/12/17/atom-versus-tegra-3-in-windows-8-tablets/#.UM_6zXPjnmY Dec 18 05:11:23 (via _av500_ this morning) Dec 18 05:11:32 So at ELC SF in Feb, Arnd Bergmann said it has nothing to do with the instruction set. Dec 18 05:11:48 but it has to do with ARM's controls for turning large portions of the chip off when not needed. Dec 18 05:12:40 (that wasn't in his presentation, just in conversation). Dec 18 05:13:40 * alan_o is still waiting for his MIPS fone Dec 18 05:16:28 alan_o : cranberry? that sounds great! Dec 18 07:49:01 Bleh, anyone have any idea if this will work for the beagleboard classic? Dec 18 07:49:02 http://www.frys.com/product/257237#detailed Dec 18 08:03:14 Cykon, the page doesn't seem to have the necessary detail Dec 18 08:04:28 http://elinux.org/BeagleBoard#RS-232 Dec 18 08:08:29 Yeah I know :(, I guess i'll just grab one off of digikey Dec 18 08:08:35 though they're kinda expensive Dec 18 08:12:03 or maybe special computing... but both of those websites seem kind of shady... even though people recommend them so much Dec 18 08:20:54 special computing and digikey aren't shady Dec 18 08:22:30 =/ Yeah, I just don't feel comfortable ordering online from them Dec 18 08:23:10 if it makes you feel any better, they've been part of the beagle ecosystem for many years Dec 18 08:23:44 Yeah I know =/ Dec 18 08:36:21 I'm trying to follow the guide to get my bb classic up and running from http://elinux.org/BeagleBoardBeginners Dec 18 08:36:32 But under http://downloads.angstrom-distribution.org/demo/beagleboard/ there's no u-boot.bin Dec 18 08:36:34 @_@ Dec 18 08:53:53 Cykon: have you looked for u-boot.bin inside the compressed files or img? Dec 18 10:12:45 woot pruss stuff working Dec 18 10:12:51 and i should be sleeping Dec 18 13:24:05 mranostay: I was getting complaints of trolls/spammers Dec 18 13:24:19 anyone here use libcomposite? Dec 18 13:24:56 trolls is nothing new :) Dec 18 13:51:40 jkridner_, I think there was a boruing rtoll yesterday Dec 18 13:51:52 he was trolling other channels also Dec 18 14:01:26 koen: are you joining our call? Dec 18 14:01:52 jkridner_: already in Dec 18 14:02:33 there was a call? Dec 18 14:02:44 direct trolling Dec 18 14:03:18 * av500 feels left out Dec 18 14:06:57 * mdp feels bad not getting to troll on that call Dec 18 14:40:45 mdp: lets feel bad together Dec 18 14:41:14 I'm over it, had a much more important vip meeting to feel important at ;) Dec 18 14:41:22 not really, but we'll pretend Dec 18 15:00:30 Hello? Dec 18 15:06:29 OK, I have a C1 Rev of the XM beagleboard. Powered it up yesterday and it came to life. added apache2 to it and was able to see the It works webpage. I then accedently bumped the SD card and now the board is dead. all nI can get from the serial port is a "60" with a bell when I turn the power on. LED D5 is on LED D13 and D14 flash momentarily when power is turned on. I tried reformatting the SD card and placed the 8 files in the order Dec 18 15:07:59 On the serial port. finally I tried powering up the unit with no SD card and got the same 60. I am at a loss as what to do next. any thoughts would be appreciated. Dec 18 15:09:40 DaveB_, if you've bumped the SD slot then it can't load anything from it Dec 18 15:09:53 neither the first stage loader neither u-boot, not linux Dec 18 15:10:29 I think the board can be booted over uart but it is going to be very painful Dec 18 15:13:48 I had turned the power off and reinstalled the SD card with the new code on it. Dec 18 15:14:20 Right now I can't get the board to respond at all thru the serial port. Dec 18 15:15:33 I would like to try and boot from the serial port. can you point me to any documentation as how to do it? Dec 18 15:16:59 ugh, got to hunt for it, just a sec Dec 18 15:18:20 panto, have you ever seen this problem before; "bumping the SD card and having the Beagleboard die"? Dec 18 15:18:56 what would you expect if you bumped the hard drive + the bios flash chip on your PC? Dec 18 15:19:28 the board boots from it, make a contact loose and it's over Dec 18 15:20:22 That is true but, When I reinstalled shouldent it have come back? Dec 18 15:21:12 you probably busted the connector Dec 18 15:21:32 nothing you do to the SD card matters if that happened Dec 18 15:22:19 DaveB_, the most relevant thing I've found is: http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/AM335x_U-Boot_User%27s_Guide Dec 18 15:22:28 Possible but, I looked at it under a scope and it looks OK to me. the mechanism is still clicking properly. Dec 18 15:22:33 maybe it works, maybe it doesn't Dec 18 15:22:58 Thanks panto, I will give it a try Dec 18 15:23:22 as a rule of thumb, when the rom loader is working you should see a stream of 'CCCC' in the console Dec 18 15:23:38 good luck! you're going to need it :) Dec 18 15:26:13 I saw in the SDR that a 60 means that the processor is booting. do you think it is waiting for some kind of boot image from the serial port? Dec 18 15:27:17 * mdp waits for panto to close the ticket Dec 18 15:27:44 I'm not absolutely sure, but if there's no SD medium to boot from serial or uart Dec 18 15:27:57 *it will try to boot Dec 18 15:29:36 I started to read the information on the link you sent and it talks about a MLO file that must be generated. I have that file already. does it contain S Records or intel hex? Dec 18 15:34:04 morning Dec 18 15:35:16 emeb: FPGA-dude! Dec 18 15:35:31 mranostay: geiger-dude! Dec 18 15:36:34 * mdp maintains a safe distance from mranostay Dec 18 15:37:17 safe distance from a radiation _detector_ should be fairly small... Dec 18 15:38:08 I definitely meant "from mranostay" ;) Dec 18 15:38:49 that is, of course, another story. Dec 18 15:41:08 yes Dec 18 15:41:14 mdp: as soon as he builds a nuclear warhead, there will be no safe distance ;) Dec 18 16:27:34 I love messing with Linkedin recruiters. They all think they're so clever Dec 18 16:29:56 alan_o: my favorite is the ones that clearly didn't read my profile Dec 18 16:30:13 mranostay: yeah, offering .NET web dev jobs Dec 18 16:30:21 yeah i love the .NET ones Dec 18 16:30:28 I like to respond to most with "you forgot to put the rate" Dec 18 16:31:13 Then rudely reply "far too low" when they come back with an insulting rate. Dec 18 16:34:51 why the heck to I have a pogoplug account already??? Dec 18 16:34:55 do I* Dec 18 16:40:47 are there angstrom drivers for Belkin N300 ( F9l1002v1) wifi dongle? wifi dongles in general? Dec 18 16:41:11 what is the standard procedure for those? Dec 18 16:42:26 frodosDog: http://26-26-54.hardwarebug.org/30 Dec 18 16:42:44 hey thanks Koen!! Dec 18 16:43:57 now my 8GB usb stick is in the cloud Dec 18 16:44:00 I am so proud Dec 18 16:45:12 av500: weirdo :) Dec 18 16:46:39 cute! I'll remember that but I've spent a couple hours fiddling with it on my own before I found out that you can only hook it up through the OTG port hehe Dec 18 16:47:03 * mranostay grabs for a drink Dec 18 16:48:56 <__av500__> arf Dec 18 16:49:11 double the weirdo Dec 18 16:53:22 mranostay:: may i suggets a pumkin Farm house ale or nice Saison? Dec 18 16:53:47 or suggest Dec 18 16:55:29 too early here Dec 18 16:56:34 yep here too Dec 18 16:57:57 I'm ready Dec 18 17:08:01 a gentle reminder that the Call For Participation for the Embedded Linux Conference deadline for submissions is Jan 4th! get your presenation proposals submitted soon! http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/embedded-linux-conference/cfp Dec 18 17:38:59 anyone use SPI and beaglebone for talking to a LCD? specifically the nokia 6610 lcd? Dec 18 17:39:33 Is anyone doing the above in node.js with bonescript? Dec 18 17:42:25 ij he is, he would be a rockstar Dec 18 17:42:27 if Dec 18 17:43:13 prpplague: yes mom :) Dec 18 17:43:16 * mranostay ducks Dec 18 17:43:59 mranostay: that's Mr.Mom to you Dec 18 17:44:01 alan_o: now PRUSS + nodejs would be rockstar Dec 18 17:44:28 alan_o: you submitting something for elc? Dec 18 17:44:34 er av500 Dec 18 17:44:35 mranostay: hehe, that's the interface I'm waiting for Dec 18 17:44:42 nodejs -> virtio -> pruss == groupies Dec 18 17:44:44 prpplague: oh yeah... Dec 18 17:44:59 prpplague: but I've got _plenty_ of time :) Dec 18 17:45:10 alan_o: hehe Dec 18 17:45:20 So prpplague, is the number of submissions behind the curve so far? Dec 18 17:45:30 alan_o: you were that kid working on the homework 10 minutes before class weren't you? :) Dec 18 17:45:44 sometimes during class. Dec 18 17:45:57 alan_o: it's about normal for this far out, everyone seems to submit in the last 5 or 6 days Dec 18 17:46:04 I once made up homework while being asked to read it Dec 18 17:46:09 always love the ones it was 5% of your grade but if you didn't do it they would take more :) Dec 18 17:46:35 so you just have to BS it somewhat convincingly :) Dec 18 17:46:42 mranostay: that's horrible! I never had one of those, but yeah, I can see people doing the math, "this won't affect my letter grade at all!" Dec 18 17:47:07 * prpplague never did his homework Dec 18 17:47:10 prpplague: it's like a merge window Dec 18 17:47:15 always passed the class with test scores Dec 18 17:47:26 we had to do homework Dec 18 17:47:36 prpplague: they made that hard to do for us. Don't think you could pass without it Dec 18 17:47:45 40% of your grade for most math classes iirc Dec 18 17:47:54 i hate class attendance points as well Dec 18 17:47:54 or 30 Dec 18 17:47:56 alan_o: ahh Dec 18 17:48:08 but... in most math classes it was just an "effort grade" Dec 18 17:48:24 didn't get graded, so all you had to do was put down some BS and then "I couldn't get the answer" for the rest Dec 18 17:48:39 we always had something like 60% final exam, 20% tests, 20% homework Dec 18 17:48:45 occasionally they'd collect one and check it closely, then you'd get busted :) Dec 18 17:49:03 oh yeah, they'd _never_ be allowed to put that much on a final exam Dec 18 17:49:09 not in my district Dec 18 17:49:20 I think it was max 10 or maybe 15% Dec 18 17:49:28 We're talking high school here. Dec 18 17:49:49 alan_o: "school" Dec 18 17:49:53 please Dec 18 17:50:06 heh Dec 18 17:50:07 av500: well, as opposed to university Dec 18 17:50:18 university professors can do whatever they want. Dec 18 17:50:25 oh yeah and do :) Dec 18 17:50:55 I think I had some 40% finals. No more than that. Dec 18 17:51:29 One had a condition that if you didn't pass the cumulative final, you couldn't pass. Dec 18 17:52:33 alan_o, _evil_ university professors ... fixed that for you Dec 18 17:52:54 hehe, that's the kind of professor I'd be Dec 18 17:53:05 troll professors are the worse Dec 18 17:53:08 we had a prof that would not let you pass an exam unless you passed one of the 3 subparts Dec 18 17:53:12 man, I think it'd be fun though, making kids learn. Dec 18 17:53:21 he argued that in real life you dont need to be good at everything Dec 18 17:53:24 learn to want to kill you you mean Dec 18 17:53:26 but at one thing at least Dec 18 17:53:54 av500: like zelda, get all the tri-force pieces? Dec 18 17:54:14 one subpart to pass, all parts for a good grade Dec 18 17:54:29 made sense to me Dec 18 17:55:27 seems not terrible. Over here, "pass" is not good enough. getting a D grade is highly frowned upon. In CS D's didn't count. Other majors allowed one or two D's total. Dec 18 17:55:30 later as a TA, we had a SW to traffic shape exam results :) Dec 18 17:55:55 we could move the cutoff over the bell curve and see how many made it Dec 18 17:55:55 Does anone know how to force the beagleboard xm in to serial bootloader mode "CCCC" on the serial port? All I can seem to get out of the port is "60" Dec 18 17:56:01 60 is fine Dec 18 17:56:41 av500: D's on general eds do! Dec 18 17:58:47 bell curves are stupid. There's no reason some percentage should have to fail. Dec 18 17:59:11 maybe in undergrad classes with lots of slackers, it doesn't make much difference Dec 18 17:59:19 but in higher level stuff where everyone is good? Dec 18 17:59:24 alan_o: lol Dec 18 17:59:48 * av500 shepherded a lot of "non-good" people thru higher years Dec 18 18:00:07 my prof used to say, there is a need for sales people too :) Dec 18 18:00:11 I'm not saying "everyone's a winner" or anything like that. But if everyone _does_ do good work, then they should all pass. Maybe that just never happens in real life though. Dec 18 18:00:18 Hi everyone. Dec 18 18:00:24 alan_o: oh, the good ones did pass Dec 18 18:00:26 av500: no doubt, but what about in grad school? Dec 18 18:00:39 I guess in grad school they don't really bell Dec 18 18:00:46 alan_o: it was more, lets put the cutoff at a point where nobody can argue his was into passing Dec 18 18:00:53 ah Dec 18 18:01:02 because he misses only 0.5 points or so :) Dec 18 18:01:29 I am trying to enable the uart2 on beagleboard xm rev C. I am using robert nelson stable kernel with a RTS/CTS fix to enable hardware handshaking. Dec 18 18:01:50 Seems to me that the beagleboard specs are out of date Dec 18 18:02:29 can someone confirm that the pins listed on the xmSRM (Expansion Connector Signals) are wrong? Dec 18 18:02:41 why should they be wrong? Dec 18 18:02:48 I am unable to match the informations provided in the spec with the TI TRM Dec 18 18:07:30 I don't pretend to understand it all Dec 18 18:07:56 but there seems to be some mistakes, either on the 4000 pages of TI or the beagle SRM Dec 18 18:08:17 * mranostay pokes jkridner_ Dec 18 18:08:25 ? Dec 18 18:08:39 wrong? Dec 18 18:08:56 For instance I found that the rx pin should be connected to GPIO 147 and the specs says it's connected to gpio 143 Dec 18 18:08:57 geez Dec 18 18:09:38 jkridner_: thought you like to see my PRUSS stuff :) Dec 18 18:10:15 woot: http://www.cnx-software.com/2012/12/18/rhombus-tech-eoma-68-cpu-card-prototype/ Dec 18 18:10:19 finally Dec 18 18:10:25 the $EVERYTHING killer Dec 18 18:11:02 I also found that with a working serial port (rx/tx) I get the following output Dec 18 18:11:08 name: uart2_rx.gpio_147 (0x4800217a/0x14a = 0x0104), b ad25, t NA Dec 18 18:11:08 mode: OMAP_PIN_INPUT | OMAP_MUX_MODE4 Dec 18 18:11:08 signals: uart2_rx | mcbsp3_fsx | gpt8_pwm_evt | NA | gpio_147 | NA | NA | safe_mode Dec 18 18:11:31 on cat /sys/kernel/debug/omap_mux/uart2_rx Dec 18 18:11:51 but the specs says that the mode should be 1 and not 4 Dec 18 18:13:02 I am assuming that if the modes are not correct, the signal won't be handled by the proper hardware on the proc side. Dec 18 18:14:23 OMG Dec 18 18:14:29 LED support fot CAN bus Dec 18 18:15:29 koen: what is with all the ops!? :) Dec 18 18:16:46 av500: do you agree? Dec 18 18:18:23 mranostay: can I kick you now?
