**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Sun Apr 28 02:59:58 2013 Apr 28 03:01:34 Howdy, I just bitbaked a new systemd-image in anticipation of receiving my Black on Monday. I booted it up on an original BB with an audio cape plugged in. I installed alsa-utils and aplay'd a wav file of a man speaking I've been using for testing. The voice was completely covered with static. I changed some of the levels in alsamixer and it got a bit better but I could never get the static to completely go away. I booted my old Apr 28 03:01:35 3.2.42 image SD and it played wonderfully. Any idea what the issue could be with this fresh build? Apr 28 03:02:03 How can I tell if my BB Black is flashing the eMMC? Apr 28 03:05:23 None of the lights are on. Apr 28 03:07:30 not a good sign Apr 28 03:12:29 They're on now. Apr 28 03:12:47 I held the boot button for a while and they turned off. Apr 28 03:14:29 That may have selected an alternate boot source, as there are four. Apr 28 03:15:24 Ah Apr 28 03:15:31 Psge 31 of SRM Apr 28 03:15:46 Page too Apr 28 03:16:01 So I can't get to it via the web so it seems to be flashing Apr 28 03:16:22 TCL987, do you have any capes plugged in? Apr 28 03:16:25 Nope Apr 28 03:16:36 I just got the board Apr 28 03:16:46 ok Apr 28 03:16:46 I can't seem to get ssh to work Apr 28 03:17:35 The web-based one gives me a redirect loop Apr 28 03:17:50 SSH clients just can't connect Apr 28 03:19:29 I'm hoping that reflashing it will solve the issue Apr 28 03:20:57 Which other OSes support the BB Black? Apr 28 03:30:25 Yeeeeeah! Got my watch working! FINALLY! 4:30 AM. Apr 28 03:30:28 :-o Apr 28 03:30:44 Gratz :-) Apr 28 03:32:24 I'm not going to touch my BBB's eMMC (when I get it) until I have a bootable microSD card for it. Otherwise too easy to saw of the branch you're sitting on. Apr 28 03:33:22 hopefully it won't take too long to get debian up and running on teh BBB Apr 28 03:33:31 I needed to get a uSD card to flash it. Apr 28 03:33:50 What watch? Apr 28 03:34:39 I'll be going Debian too, or any other non-busybox distro. Apr 28 03:35:03 lol TCL987 I've been trying to get my ezchronos working all night... Apr 28 03:37:20 Neat Apr 28 03:37:31 I wish there was a eMMC activity light. Apr 28 03:37:59 I thought one of the user LCDs was an eMMC activity light... Apr 28 03:38:04 er Apr 28 03:38:05 LEDs Apr 28 03:38:57 I should check. Apr 28 03:39:33 LED USER3 is eMMC Apr 28 03:39:44 In the default image Apr 28 03:40:39 Ah the almost solidly lit one. Apr 28 03:41:44 Where can I find a list? Apr 28 03:43:46 Page 22 or SRM Apr 28 03:44:33 You know, if you grab a few drinks and sit down and read the SRM from cover to cover, you'll save yourself no end of hassles :P Apr 28 03:46:02 I'm doing that now actually. Apr 28 03:46:28 I just started though. Apr 28 04:05:11 So, ka6sox, you still hanging around? Apr 28 04:08:07 k, so my RPi flamewar with BBB continues Apr 28 04:08:29 the current allegation is that the first run of BBB does not have a 1Ghz proc Apr 28 04:08:37 :-) Apr 28 04:08:55 That was a pre-release run. Apr 28 04:11:23 i replied "All retail boards have the 1Ghz processor." Apr 28 04:13:02 I think that's accurate. They wouldn't do otherwise else the RMA rate would be astronomic owing to erroneous trade description, just imagine it. Apr 28 04:14:41 More likely it was a "Hey, I've got some development units left over, anyone want them as mementos?" Apr 28 04:14:48 every ARM SoC has its 'dirty little secrets' Apr 28 04:14:59 however the ones they keep trying to say BBB has are not true Apr 28 04:22:21 tsquar3d, yes, but its 5am Apr 28 04:23:16 ka6sox: I agree... ha. Apr 28 04:23:26 Alright... well, let's call it a night! :-) Apr 28 04:23:46 crashovrd, starting a flamewar with the raspi folks doesnt' help Apr 28 04:23:57 tsquar3d, :) Apr 28 04:24:34 ka6sox: I'll catch you tomorrow sometime. :-) Apr 28 04:24:36 g'night! Apr 28 04:24:41 nite tsquar3d Apr 28 04:27:31 Starting a flamewar with the raspi folks is easy. You just have to mention something about it that isn't 150% perfect, or dare to suggest that RPF do something that they haven't already done or announced. The Farce runs strong there. Apr 28 04:28:11 i didn't start the flamewar. they did that on their own. Apr 28 04:28:18 fiola: we dont' care Apr 28 04:28:22 fiola, remember many wars have been fought over religion. Apr 28 04:28:37 someone was wrong on the internet! so i had to correct them Apr 28 04:28:39 :P Apr 28 04:28:40 and honestl if they are happy with their rapsberry who cares Apr 28 04:28:53 Aye, no point talking to fanbois, anywhere, ever. Apr 28 04:29:05 if there was no Rpi, would there have been a BBB? Apr 28 04:29:33 yes Apr 28 04:29:33 About as useful as arguing about religion with a devout believer. Apr 28 04:29:35 mrpackethead, we know that one... Apr 28 04:29:43 no, there wouldnt' have been one. Apr 28 04:29:56 Allwinner and Android are driving prices to the bottom Apr 28 04:30:17 crashovrd, apples and oranges Apr 28 04:30:26 not at all Apr 28 04:30:29 rpi was $35 because theres 2million chips that got made that were an opps Apr 28 04:30:37 yup Apr 28 04:30:38 this is the year of the 'Android Console' Apr 28 04:30:41 That's undoubtedly the largest contribution the Pi has made, to bring the price ceiling down. The hardware is truly bad. Apr 28 04:30:44 what happens when the next 1M are used. Apr 28 04:30:46 there are all kinds of cheap boards coming out Apr 28 04:31:05 so, no, i cant attribute it all to the RPi Apr 28 04:31:12 it may have been a factor Apr 28 04:31:30 the Pi is not the same as a allwinner tablet. Apr 28 04:31:33 its certainl got awareness of low cost computing up though Apr 28 04:31:37 so its apples and oranges Apr 28 04:31:44 but armv6 + video core are not winning new designs Apr 28 04:31:47 allwinner is Apr 28 04:32:05 but allwinner didn't happen overnight Apr 28 04:32:15 Olimex has received a large batch of A20 samples, it was on their blog. Apr 28 04:32:22 the rpi came about because someone had 2million chips with an oops Apr 28 04:32:24 if you want to 'blame' someone for low, low prices Apr 28 04:32:26 blame Apple Apr 28 04:32:43 otherwise we would probably be using some other proc Apr 28 04:32:47 * ka6sox disengages and goes back to resting. Apr 28 04:33:09 * crashovrd looks disgustingly at the 8031 Apr 28 04:33:46 poor cousin to the 8051 Apr 28 04:33:51 * ka6sox really goes out now Apr 28 04:33:57 lol Apr 28 04:34:13 * fiola turns off ka6sox's router Apr 28 04:34:36 oh snap Apr 28 04:34:56 that reminds me there was some polish company that made the fastest ever 8051 recently Apr 28 04:35:33 http://www.dcd.pl/news/342/ Apr 28 04:52:24 Hi there, I'm interested in the BeagleBoard Black, but does it have a HW accelerated video decoder to decode H264 1080p30fps? Apr 28 04:53:04 no Apr 28 04:53:12 It seems like SOC used does not have that feature, it seems Apr 28 04:53:31 @dm8tbr: you talked to me? Apr 28 04:53:38 Nope. It's not a home media centre. Apr 28 04:53:51 <_av500_> no 1080p Apr 28 04:53:56 <_av500_> not even 1080i Apr 28 04:53:59 <_av500_> or 1080x Apr 28 04:54:01 ok thanks Apr 28 04:54:20 * _av500_ feels that should be on the homepage in red and blink Apr 28 04:54:21 does beagleboard has an alternative or does I have to go look somewhere else? Apr 28 04:54:29 <_av500_> buy an rpi Apr 28 04:54:47 <_av500_> install xbmc Apr 28 04:54:49 <_av500_> play movies Apr 28 04:54:57 <_av500_> 4) profit Apr 28 04:55:26 The rpi plays media better. The BBB does everything else better. Apr 28 04:55:35 ok thanks Apr 28 04:56:02 <_av500_> np Apr 28 04:56:18 well I only hope the rpi is better at Android Apr 28 04:56:25 <_av500_> nope Apr 28 04:56:28 <_av500_> not with armv6 Apr 28 04:56:36 as I'm an ANdroid dev and I can bring in an app to do what I want better Apr 28 04:57:08 basically it's like a streaming client that I can remote control through a webservice or something Apr 28 04:57:23 <_av500_> get a cheap tablet Apr 28 04:57:34 is there a camera interface on BBB? Apr 28 04:57:42 <_av500_> yes and no Apr 28 04:57:45 http://circuitco.com/support/index.php?title=BeagleBone_3.1MP_Camera Apr 28 04:57:49 says CAM/IF Apr 28 04:57:49 <_av500_> yes Apr 28 04:57:55 but i dont see that on the datasheet Apr 28 04:57:56 <_av500_> well, its GPMC Apr 28 04:57:59 does that work now? :) Apr 28 04:58:01 <_av500_> so basically a memory interface Apr 28 04:58:04 aka working drivers? Apr 28 04:58:15 <_av500_> mranostay: they are stuck in greek customs Apr 28 04:58:30 <_av500_> I guess asking for a bailout Apr 28 04:58:37 hehe Apr 28 04:58:46 k, so there is no high speed interface / image signal processing voodoo Apr 28 04:59:06 <_av500_> no Apr 28 04:59:10 k, ty Apr 28 04:59:15 <_av500_> gpmc is a memory interface Apr 28 04:59:35 <_av500_> but there is no ISP block Apr 28 04:59:47 <_av500_> of course you could makethe GPU do stuff once its supported Apr 28 05:00:09 Hi speed comms interface in the PRUs if you want to do something fast and realtime. But you'd have to write it. Apr 28 06:14:23 hey everyone, new to the chat and beagle Apr 28 06:16:45 was hoping someone was actually on here... Apr 28 06:25:57 does anyone know why my bb black isn't recognized by my pc when I connect with an SD card inserted? Apr 28 06:30:44 nswingen: linux? windows? Apr 28 06:37:14 hey, sorry Apr 28 06:37:18 tabbed away for a minute Apr 28 06:37:32 I'm using ubuntu at the moment Apr 28 06:38:20 @dm8tbr ah, that's what that ping sound was 7 minutes ago... Apr 28 06:38:46 hehe Apr 28 06:39:02 haven't used IRC in forever Apr 28 06:39:10 is your SD card formatted properly for the device? Apr 28 06:39:22 well that's a great question, haha, and I don't think so! Apr 28 06:39:24 iow did you put a known working image on it Apr 28 06:39:35 how are you powering it? Apr 28 06:39:49 USB right now Apr 28 06:40:30 I'm playing with it tethered since I don't have my hdmi cable yet Apr 28 06:41:11 so, n00b question, but what image would I put on my sd card? since this is the bb black, the OS already resides on the board Apr 28 06:41:53 you can boot off etiher. Apr 28 06:42:33 I guess I planned on keeping my OS on the 2gb build in memory, and using the SD as external storage Apr 28 06:42:40 built* in Apr 28 06:44:39 I suppose I just need to poke around a bit to figure this out, probably don't need to be wasting the IRC's time on this question Apr 28 06:59:45 I just burned an SD from the latest xz file for the BeagleBone and /dev/ttyO1-O5 are missing. Does anyone know how to get those back? Apr 28 07:02:17 stateful: did you look on teh floor Apr 28 07:02:27 yep Apr 28 07:02:30 stateful: they always fall off for me Apr 28 07:04:38 lol.. Apr 28 07:44:17 hey is someone around to help me out installing gcc-arm-linux-gnueabi on debian? Apr 28 07:44:27 I manged to install it using apt-get via embedian but I can't seem to find the binary x| Apr 28 07:45:36 zamn which version did you install? Apr 28 07:45:47 debian version Apr 28 07:45:56 gcc-4.4-arm-linux-gnueabi Apr 28 07:46:00 oh Apr 28 07:46:01 debian 6 Apr 28 07:46:02 squeez Apr 28 07:46:14 hm okay so no full gcc-arm yet Apr 28 07:46:22 wait for wheezy Apr 28 07:46:26 or install ubuntu Apr 28 07:46:41 or compile a toolchain with openembedded Apr 28 07:47:11 what do you mean by 'no full gcc-arm' Apr 28 07:47:13 or download an angstroem sdk Apr 28 07:47:21 can't i compile c programs to run on arm using this? Apr 28 07:48:05 zamN ubuntu and debian started to multilib this means you can install crosscompiler easily via packagemanagement Apr 28 07:48:25 and other libs too Apr 28 07:48:26 i have it installed Apr 28 07:48:28 via embedian Apr 28 07:49:03 http://www.emdebian.org/ Apr 28 07:49:31 just had to add their repo's to my sources.list and i was able to install the compiler via package management Apr 28 07:51:17 so why you asked than Apr 28 07:52:22 I was simply asking where the binary would be.. but #debian was able to help me with that a lot quicker heh. Sorry for the troubles :x Apr 28 07:52:32 o.O Apr 28 07:52:50 know your packagmanagment tool Apr 28 07:52:53 dpkg -L Apr 28 07:53:00 dpkg -l Apr 28 07:53:07 i used -L Apr 28 07:53:18 dpkg -l for finding right package Apr 28 07:53:22 but yeah, i havent gotten dirty enough with linux yet lol Apr 28 07:53:23 -L for contents Apr 28 07:53:38 <_av500_> rpm -qil Apr 28 07:53:39 <_av500_> :) Apr 28 07:53:42 which is why i want to be a gsoc student for beagle so I can learn more about how things work internally :x Apr 28 07:56:18 ipkg/opkg list Apr 28 07:56:39 <_av500_> tar -tvf :) Apr 28 07:57:05 gm av500 Apr 28 07:57:08 btw. Apr 28 07:57:13 unzip -l Apr 28 07:57:15 *g* Apr 28 08:30:31 Turl: I responded to your application on the beagle-gsoc list Apr 28 08:30:52 Turl: long story short: the project is too broad, let's pick an item and focus on that Apr 28 08:31:24 that way you have a realistic chance to get it done Apr 28 08:32:00 I know education is all about the road and not the destination, but I always *hated* writing "it failed, but I learned a lot!" type of reports :) Apr 28 08:40:21 <_av500_> der weg ist das ziel Apr 28 08:40:37 genau! Apr 28 09:22:52 <_av500_> koen: 10ys I read a study on powerline with a lot of measurements Apr 28 09:23:10 <_av500_> one of them said that without the actual powerline transmission improved Apr 28 09:26:38 * dm8tbr remembers that one Apr 28 09:34:49 Hi all. Any advice or insight into the performance difference between Angstrom and Ubuntu on the bone? Apr 28 09:35:05 <_av500_> both blink the cursor at the same speed Apr 28 09:35:06 I'm having a bad time with Angstrom, and would rather be in more familair Ubuntu territory Apr 28 09:35:21 _av500_: Good metric :) Apr 28 09:35:33 <_av500_> it all depends Apr 28 09:36:24 <_av500_> performance doing what? Apr 28 09:38:07 <_av500_> if you install headless ubuntu, it should be about the same Apr 28 09:38:17 _av500_: I'm going to be running a Python script that: (i) uses a WiFi adapter, 3G dongle, sqlite Apr 28 09:38:25 Yeah, headless and unattended Apr 28 09:38:43 <_av500_> should be about the same Apr 28 09:39:14 OK super. Apr 28 09:39:17 <_av500_> ogra_: ubuntu-server still exists? or did convergence eat it? Apr 28 09:39:19 Thank you :) Apr 28 09:39:52 <_av500_> seems to still exist Apr 28 09:39:55 there's also this 'core' thingy, but it's very stripped down from what I know Apr 28 09:40:05 <_av500_> start from -server and install the stuff you need Apr 28 09:40:09 <_av500_> core is not for end users Apr 28 09:40:14 yup Apr 28 09:40:46 * Electric_Monk is confused about Angstrom Apr 28 09:41:27 I have no idea where I downloaded my image from, but I see it's using the "unstable" feed. Can/should I switch the feed to e.g. v2012.12 to get newer packages, or will it just hose everyhting? Apr 28 09:41:34 The internet seems to have absolutely no comment on that. Apr 28 09:41:46 <_av500_> ask koen Apr 28 09:42:06 _av500_: So, Google led me here -> https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM/OMAP, at which point I see there's a "Precise Pangolin (12.04)" under the "Server Images" section. Is this what I want? Apr 28 09:42:32 (partially as I want gcc >=4.5, but I'm also tempted by the fact that v2012.12 includes a "armv7a vfp neon" specific build) Apr 28 09:43:29 <_av500_> neon is in angstrom since long Apr 28 09:43:35 <_av500_> and vfp too Apr 28 09:45:17 <_av500_> http://www.ubuntu.com/download/arm Apr 28 09:45:22 <_av500_> narcos: ^^^ Apr 28 09:46:15 <_av500_> narcos: but I dont think bone is an official ubuntu ragret Apr 28 09:46:27 <_av500_> look at the Robert Nelson stuff Apr 28 09:46:55 you'd just pair a kernel+modules with a rootfs, presto, ... profit! Apr 28 09:47:23 <_av500_> righ Apr 28 09:47:24 <_av500_> t Apr 28 09:48:12 <_av500_> anyway, ubuntu is a cloud OS Apr 28 09:48:42 _av500_: OK I'm Googling for that Apr 28 09:50:37 * narcos finds http://www.eewiki.net/display/linuxonarm/BeagleBone Apr 28 09:55:44 narcos whats your app doing? Apr 28 09:57:48 woglinde: You mean the app I want to run on the BeagleBone? It collects wireless information from surrounding clients/APS, saves it to a sqlite db, and periodically syncs the db to a server Apr 28 09:58:02 hm Apr 28 09:58:15 what information you are collecting Apr 28 09:58:25 wifi in promius mode? Apr 28 09:59:18 aka google mode Apr 28 09:59:43 maybe to make a map with AP :) Apr 28 09:59:55 Yes, monitor mode Apr 28 10:01:15 <_av500_> facebook auth token sniffer Apr 28 10:01:16 marcos which wifi modul your are using? Apr 28 10:01:28 args nacros I meant Apr 28 10:02:46 narcos hm I meant which python modules you are using? Apr 28 10:03:25 <_av500_> pyfi of course Apr 28 10:03:29 and I do not see Apr 28 10:03:38 <_av500_> you would use jafi Apr 28 10:03:40 where you should get performance probelms Apr 28 10:03:47 <_av500_> and jkridner would use jsfi Apr 28 10:03:49 av500 no you have scapy Apr 28 10:03:55 <_av500_> crapy? Apr 28 10:03:56 woglinde: For wireless things, Scapy Apr 28 10:03:59 which is really nice and easy Apr 28 10:04:01 to use Apr 28 10:04:39 unfornatly you do not have a lib for nl802.11 yet Apr 28 10:04:41 Also, experimenting with pylibpcap Apr 28 10:05:04 For data upload, Requests, and Flask Apr 28 10:05:04 scappy should be okay reduce the polling time Apr 28 10:05:45 woglinde: Ah, I didn't know I could - know how to reduce the polling time off hand? Apr 28 10:06:06 hm no I could lookup in my masterthesis Apr 28 10:07:01 woglinde: Unless you mean how often I manually poll for data - but I don't, I call a function for each packet received, with the prn function Apr 28 10:08:01 _av500_: Heh, yes, it would be trivial to grab Facebook cookies too Apr 28 10:08:26 narcos ahaha yes I used just sleep Apr 28 10:08:50 woglinde: What did you use it for in your thesis? Apr 28 10:08:59 doesn't facebook use ssl? Apr 28 10:09:56 nacros to measure dbi stuff Apr 28 10:10:15 for client tracking via the ap'S Apr 28 10:10:24 narcos ah I used sniff(iface=moninterface, count=10) Apr 28 10:10:32 and than later thread.sleep Apr 28 10:10:42 mru: For authentication, yes, but after that your session cookie is passed over HTTP by default Apr 28 10:10:51 wtf Apr 28 10:10:57 mru: You can set all comms to be in SSL in your settings somewhere Apr 28 10:11:11 mru: i.e. if you use Facebook at Starbucks, everyone there can see your cookie. Apr 28 10:11:19 * mru does not facebook Apr 28 10:11:22 narcos and there was some bugs in older scapy versions which had a huge impact on the ap's I was running my stuff Apr 28 10:13:12 woglinde: Some protips from my experience: sniff(store=0, iface=iface, prn=proc_p, filter=bfilter, stopperTimeout=1, stopper=stopperCheck) Apr 28 10:13:32 narcos I wrote the code 4 years ago so Apr 28 10:13:44 narcos: so if you were to hang around a cafe for a while, you'd be able to impersonate anyone using facebook there? Apr 28 10:13:56 The store=0 is quite important, otherwise you run out of memory quite soon, and can't figure out why for about a day. The stopperTimeout is a nice 'patch' that allows you to programatically stop sniffing, as by default there is no option to Apr 28 10:14:03 woglinde: OK :) Apr 28 10:14:10 mru: Indeed you could Apr 28 10:14:14 narcos and I mainly know all tricks Apr 28 10:14:26 and you missed the count option Apr 28 10:14:36 which is why I do not run out of mem Apr 28 10:14:40 woglidne: I don't use count, I want to capture forever :) Apr 28 10:14:44 I thought all major websites had learned to use ssl everywhere by now Apr 28 10:14:52 for anything authenticated at least Apr 28 10:15:01 narcos as I said I caputre all seconds some packages which is enough Apr 28 10:15:13 mru: Google has, Amazon too I think, a lot of the others haven't. They claim it'll impact performance, but Google's proven this isn't the case. Apr 28 10:15:21 woglinde: Gotcha :) Apr 28 10:15:34 I say security first, then performance Apr 28 10:15:50 because I am only intressted in the dbi/signalstrengh values Apr 28 10:16:08 and then sending the results to a central server Apr 28 10:16:11 wogline: Ah, and you had to manually calculate those with Scapy, hey? Apr 28 10:16:18 no Apr 28 10:16:30 just looking up which clients are sending stuff Apr 28 10:19:34 AFAIK Scapy doesn't decode SSI. I manually extracted and calculated. Apr 28 10:20:27 ig_str = -(256-ord(packet.notdecoded[-4:-3])) <-- like this Apr 28 10:23:33 narcos I used something like this Apr 28 10:23:35 packetflags = ['Rate','dBm_AntSignal','dBm_AntNoise','Lock_Quality','Antenna','dB_AntSignal','dB_AntNoise'] Apr 28 10:23:46 and parsed the whole package Apr 28 10:25:10 okay enough offtopic Apr 28 10:25:32 son wants to play table tennis Apr 28 10:25:35 till later Apr 28 10:30:04 woglinde: Cool, catch you later :) Apr 28 11:04:51 call for mentors for gsoc 2013!!! Apr 28 11:06:14 anyone that I can talk about the timeline for development and the impact after the project successfully completed? Apr 28 11:08:25 while, hope someone can view my proposal and have some comments. https://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/proposal/review/google/gsoc2013/hustcalm/1 Apr 28 11:23:03 hustcalm: can you send a copy of the proposal and that link to the beagleboard-gsoc mailinglist as well? Apr 28 11:23:51 ok:-), I will send the mail now. Apr 28 11:25:47 hustcalm: it would be good to include a few concrete examples of demos you want to work on Apr 28 11:26:07 e.g. "enhance weather station demo" Apr 28 11:26:20 "enhance osciloscope demo" Apr 28 11:26:24 or come up with new ones Apr 28 11:27:21 fine, I'm thinking about giving some basic demos to novices, like GPIO, I2C, PWM,etc. then, come about with some new ones Apr 28 11:27:46 I will include it to my timeline or? Apr 28 11:29:22 hi koen Apr 28 11:32:26 koen: what kind of features would you like to see on a pwm sysfs binding? Apr 28 11:36:01 Turl: the pwm framework TI used in 3.2 (from Bill Gatliff) has this: http://hastebin.com/forimejefe.coffee Apr 28 11:37:04 so duty cycle in both nanoseconds and percent Apr 28 11:37:23 period in ns and Hz Apr 28 11:37:30 on/off (run) Apr 28 11:37:38 and polarity Apr 28 11:44:40 koen: so basically exposing pwm_config, pwm_set_polarity, pwm_enable and pwm_disable via sysfs right? Apr 28 11:46:30 humm, weird, the usb network link isn't working now. was working earlier... reset the BBB several times, just rebooted my mac, it comes up with the IP on the mac correctly but 192.168.7.2 doesn't ping Apr 28 11:46:45 might have to go grab my FTDI board. Apr 28 11:47:02 koen: what kind of usage do you expect from it? Apr 28 11:47:21 mostly debugging, or actual 'production' use by applications and such? Apr 28 12:06:56 Turl: debugging and quick testing Apr 28 12:07:11 hm whatever my issue is, it's in the usb comms, usb0 is present on the bone, en4 on the mac still has its 169.254 addr Apr 28 12:07:13 Turl: a lot of people like simple text interfaces :) Apr 28 12:07:29 Turl: and jkridner has the javascript stuff use sysfs Apr 28 12:07:45 koen: I agree, but kernel developers often fear their misuse too Apr 28 12:08:59 as in, say you implement clock handling via sysfs, eventually an android phone will come out and will toggle all its clocks from userspace using the debug interface Apr 28 12:10:07 Turl: it has been stated that extending the pwm framework with sysfs nodes is ok Apr 28 12:10:15 that was a while ago :) Apr 28 12:11:01 I don't forsee problems with adding it and getting it upstream Apr 28 12:12:03 erp no, mac is requesting DHCP and bbone sees it, wonder if its dhcp service isn't running Apr 28 12:12:11 * koen afk for a while Apr 28 12:13:41 koen: how much time do you suppose writing the sysfs interface would take? Apr 28 12:17:39 writing it can be done in 2 weeks or so Apr 28 12:17:45 then there's working with upstream Apr 28 12:18:05 and I think some kind of test problem is needed as well Apr 28 12:19:08 maybe mranostay, ds2, panto and mdp can weigh in when they see this Apr 28 12:19:26 * koen really afk now Apr 28 12:36:13 something for the google-paranoids: http://www.dagensit.no/article2596740.ece Apr 28 12:43:39 that page appears to be encrypted or something Apr 28 12:43:48 cant make any sense of the letter jumble Apr 28 12:43:59 are you referring to the norwegian language? Apr 28 12:44:06 ;) Apr 28 12:54:08 hash collision? heh Apr 28 13:40:11 <_av500_> scary Apr 28 13:40:25 <_av500_> to think that all my pics go to a teenage girl Apr 28 13:40:31 <_av500_> and vice versa Apr 28 13:40:51 <_av500_> I'm sure microsoft has a campaing against that Apr 28 13:48:33 So, _av500_ , it says that your focus projects include "linux multimedia"? What exactly does that entail? Apr 28 13:52:19 <_av500_> cursing Apr 28 13:52:21 <_av500_> mostly Apr 28 13:52:51 _av500_: Well, that sounds like an easy gsoc! Apr 28 13:55:12 it takes skill to curse like _av500_ Apr 28 13:55:37 We shall see. :-) Apr 28 13:56:12 linux multimedia is a waste of time unless you're building and selling products Apr 28 13:56:42 by the time you have something that works, The Right Way (tm) has always changed to something completely different Apr 28 13:56:45 _av500_: Your rebuttal, sir? Apr 28 13:57:09 mru: OMX has been The Right Way (tm) for a couple of years now, and I don't see it changing Apr 28 13:57:19 lol Apr 28 13:57:20 er, no Apr 28 13:57:30 that's what they might want you to believe Apr 28 13:57:52 besides, if things really did settle to omx, it would be time to start doing something _completely_ different Apr 28 13:58:22 all vendors support OMX because of android Apr 28 13:58:24 like beekeeping Apr 28 13:58:33 omx is full of vendor quirks Apr 28 13:58:37 it would certainly sting less Apr 28 13:59:54 * Turl gets mru some bees Apr 28 14:00:58 Hmmmmmmmm..... Apr 28 14:01:39 that's ds2's line Apr 28 14:03:32 Does anyone know about this "library of arduino-compataible functions for StarterWare" project? Apr 28 14:05:12 I should start reworking my proposal Apr 28 14:05:41 Turl: Are you going for a GSoC, too? Apr 28 14:06:48 tsquar3d: yep, see https://groups.google.com/d/msg/beagleboard-gsoc/dWTiPY-0ntc/TZL3ZJuF4JsJ Apr 28 14:07:17 tsquar3d looks like your are not subscribe to the gsoc beagle mailinglist Apr 28 14:07:35 Turl: Cool cool. Apr 28 14:07:48 woglinde: Yeah... I really don't know why, though. :-p Apr 28 14:11:14 AM now. Apr 28 14:11:16 :-) Apr 28 14:16:02 I posted my idea, does it need to be approved by a moderator before it goes out? Apr 28 14:17:25 <_av500_> tsquar3d: my rebuttal is that I build products Apr 28 14:17:35 <_av500_> so I dont care about the right waqy Apr 28 14:17:37 <_av500_> way Apr 28 14:17:53 lol... a bit delayed there, but, touche. Apr 28 14:18:13 <_av500_> and everybody hates OMX Apr 28 14:18:25 <_av500_> ah, that was Turl Apr 28 14:18:27 av500 haha Apr 28 14:20:36 tsquar3d: first time email, yes Apr 28 14:21:06 Good to know... I thought maybe -- somehow -- I didn't click "send" :-p Apr 28 14:23:39 Hey, I have a C question if you don't mind. Why on earth does my compiler keep complaining that it cannot find project.h. Isn't that a system library? Apr 28 14:23:58 not on any of my systems Apr 28 14:24:07 what do you expect it to contain? Apr 28 14:24:18 I've never heard of 'project.h' Apr 28 14:24:30 sounds like something copied from a for-dummies example Apr 28 14:24:30 Well, in context, I am trying to compile a msp430-gcc project... Apr 28 14:24:39 koen: btw, shouldn't the interface be on debugfs instead of sysfs btw? Apr 28 14:24:52 s/btw// Apr 28 14:25:06 And it's all "fatal error: project.h: No such file or directory" Apr 28 14:25:20 does the file exist? Apr 28 14:25:25 Maybe I should ask 43oh Apr 28 14:27:30 I am not sure myself -- I am just getting into mps430. Apr 28 14:28:00 what makes you think there should be such a file? Apr 28 14:28:33 maybe a better way to ask it is: what is in project.h that you are using? Apr 28 14:28:55 koen: clk framework exposes their interfaces via debugfs Apr 28 14:29:02 is it #include "project.h" or #include ? Apr 28 14:29:53 just comment out the include. compile and see what errors u get. Apr 28 14:30:12 sounds like it was just copy/paste coding Apr 28 14:32:27 Well, the code in the tutorial that I am mindlessly trying to work from says #include "project.h" Apr 28 14:32:34 So, yeah.... let's see how it goes. Apr 28 14:32:35 crashovrd depends one is local header the other system-header or found by special -I conversion Apr 28 14:32:36 :-) Apr 28 14:32:41 as I suspected Apr 28 14:33:42 mru: :-p Apr 28 14:34:06 That's a malicious tongue-face, by the way. Apr 28 14:34:11 my guess is that the tutorial also had a project.c Apr 28 14:34:26 No... it's not in there... I checked. Apr 28 14:35:07 in other words, its something specific to the tutorial. not a missing system header Apr 28 14:35:51 ... yeah, I gotta run off and gind this missing headers. Apr 28 14:36:28 it's just an example Apr 28 14:37:01 for something as generic as "project.h", it sounds like a 'wizard' (helper program) from some IDE created it as default Apr 28 14:37:16 Grumble grumble... I think that is a header that is automatically imported in CCS. Apr 28 14:37:17 so the IDE project probably was project.c and project.h Apr 28 14:37:24 Yeah. I think you're right, crashovrd Apr 28 14:38:27 I burned an SD from the latest xz file last night for the BeagleBone and /dev/ttyO1-O5 are missing. Does anyone know how to get those back? Does it have to go into the devicetree fragment I've put together to set the pin mux? Apr 28 14:50:09 koen: someone seems to have already implemented the sysfs pwm interface, http://www.mail-archive.com/linux-kernel@vger.kernel.org/msg415137.html Apr 28 14:55:05 Hmmm... you know the beagleboneblack would be excellent as a blender render farm, if I could blender running stable on it. :-) Apr 28 14:59:43 tsquar3d: cpu rendering is going to be pretty slow, wouldn't it? Apr 28 15:00:14 a lot of things are better in theory than practice Apr 28 15:00:18 ... sure, but you can distribute it over a few dozen of these beasts. :-) Apr 28 15:01:27 yeah, but it's still a cortex a8 Apr 28 15:01:36 lets do the math: few dozen = 24. 24 * $45 = $1080. you can buy a single PC that would perform faster for the same cost Apr 28 15:02:09 ... we're all just nay-sayers. :-( Apr 28 15:02:16 :-p Apr 28 15:02:20 ;) Apr 28 15:02:30 reality can be so cruel Apr 28 15:03:20 now if you repeat the math witn an odroid U2 or something with an i.MX quad it might fair better Apr 28 15:04:02 Well.... http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=6007 Apr 28 15:05:25 he is comparing BBB to a RPi! Flame him! Apr 28 15:05:33 * crashovrd hands out pitchforks and torches Apr 28 15:06:08 Oh... not comparing.... Apr 28 15:06:24 im just teasing Apr 28 15:06:26 dont panic Apr 28 15:06:50 Just saying... you've got the RPi crowd going all "http://www.southampton.ac.uk/~sjc/raspberrypi/" Apr 28 15:06:57 And getting all the glory and press... Apr 28 15:07:11 When BBB would be that much greater. Apr 28 15:07:21 a Jedi cares not for these things! Apr 28 15:08:15 crashovrd, can we stop the flamewar...its really not helpful Apr 28 15:09:20 All I am saying is that a case-study for this would be useful. Apr 28 15:09:25 http://www.zdnet.com/we-thought-wed-sell-1000-the-inside-story-of-the-raspberry-pi_p3-7000009718/ Apr 28 15:09:48 even rpi foundation themselves can't see how they fare Apr 28 15:10:01 read the last part and the start of the next page Apr 28 15:10:55 ka6sox-away: hi Apr 28 15:11:09 moaning Turl Apr 28 15:11:13 what flame war? Apr 28 15:11:29 crashovrd> im just teasing Apr 28 15:11:38 maybe something got lost in translation to ASCII Apr 28 15:12:36 [08:05] he is comparing BBB to a RPi! Flame him! Apr 28 15:12:52 ... seriously though -- from a marketing *eww* point of view, case-studies of applications are invaluable. Apr 28 15:13:15 lol. that is a jest. it hoped it would be apparent form its absurdity Apr 28 15:13:53 from Apr 28 15:14:03 Hi ka6sox Apr 28 15:14:30 we are all friends here Apr 28 15:14:41 ka6sox: do you have any other ideas for lessening the scope of the proposal? https://groups.google.com/d/msg/beagleboard-gsoc/dWTiPY-0ntc/B_F-ecTvZVMJ Apr 28 15:14:42 except those of use who use openmax Apr 28 15:14:47 :) Apr 28 15:14:54 crashovrd: aka all vendors? :P Apr 28 15:15:11 dude. i <3 openmax. Apr 28 15:15:37 nvidia, ti, qcom, samsung, all of them use it Apr 28 15:15:47 crashovrd: so you hate yourself? :) Apr 28 15:15:49 Turl, let me look... Apr 28 15:15:51 never been fond of silly linux APIs like ALSA, V4L Apr 28 15:16:10 so i see openmax as the lesser of the evils Apr 28 15:17:19 i shouldn't have said 'silly'. that is a judgement word Apr 28 15:17:24 ;) Apr 28 15:19:57 Turl, see pme Apr 28 15:20:11 I needs ma coffee Apr 28 15:48:55 Hey, koen, what sort of gsoc projects do you plan on supporting? Apr 28 16:13:09 mourning tsquar3d Apr 28 16:22:55 tsquar3d, you pinged yesterday? Apr 28 16:22:56 Still, ka6sox Apr 28 16:24:05 Yeah, I was wondering what sort of gsoc you might be interested in mentoring. :-) Apr 28 16:27:43 things to do with the PRU mostly :) Apr 28 16:30:18 Ah. Okay. :-) Apr 28 16:30:30 so if you search for PRU in the ideas page. Apr 28 16:31:17 Right, I see it there. Apr 28 16:31:19 Okay. Apr 28 16:31:35 Hmm. I am trying to find someone who might be interested in my idea for a gsoc. :-/ Apr 28 16:32:28 tsquar3d, since its outside of my knowledge area thats tough for me to mentor. Apr 28 16:33:14 ka6sox: I suppose. Well -- what do you think of it in general? I mean if you were part of the crew who chose projects? Apr 28 16:33:38 as mdp says..its an interesting project... Apr 28 16:33:56 Is there a "but" in there? lol Apr 28 16:34:27 only the ones I have mentioned... :) Apr 28 16:34:43 Okay... cool. So I should submit. :-) Apr 28 16:35:12 I have not seen a "thats crap and you should go away with your tail between your legs and cry" here :) Apr 28 16:35:20 so ya, submit! Apr 28 16:36:02 all my work has been on the collection/control side... Apr 28 16:36:05 not on hte Viz Apr 28 16:37:25 :-) Cool beans. Apr 28 16:37:33 Yes... I am from the 90's. Apr 28 16:39:03 what is this top secret project recommendation? Apr 28 16:39:43 I see on the mentor list that lglira and molloyd'sd focus projects are "beaglebone applicateions" and "projects on the Beaglebone". Perhaps I should contact them. Apr 28 16:42:11 crashovrd: lolwut? Apr 28 16:43:15 does it have anything to do with McHammer? Apr 28 16:43:18 give us a hint! Apr 28 16:45:39 I am using a BeagleBone and PRU. When compile everything and execute I see : "File ./somefile.bin open passed" Apr 28 16:45:46 How do I get rid of this message? Apr 28 16:53:20 bpetersen, why do you want to get rid of it? Apr 28 16:53:59 I finally figured out why GateOne was causing a redirect loop Apr 28 16:54:05 the clock wasn't set Apr 28 16:54:12 and the set clock button didn't actually work. Apr 28 16:54:45 It was a bit late since I ended up using putty to set the clock so there isn't much reason to use GateOne. Apr 28 16:56:09 ka6sox cus I am trying to execute something to console Apr 28 16:56:16 and it makes it not "pretty" Apr 28 16:57:01 something to console? Apr 28 16:57:06 whats that? Apr 28 16:57:26 I can give commands via console Apr 28 16:58:07 since when is console "pretty" Apr 28 16:59:34 I tried commenting it out in prussdrv.c and re compiled with the make command Apr 28 17:27:51 ka6sox: hey... emacs -nw is my preferred IDE. :-p Apr 28 18:01:40 tsquar3d: whatever project interests me :) Apr 28 18:01:44 (useless answer, I know) Apr 28 18:02:01 koen: Ha.. that's a good answer. Apr 28 18:02:27 I just saw that you asked a question in my proposal thread. Apr 28 18:02:53 So.. I was wondering if it interested you. :-) Apr 28 18:06:18 cwicks asked me to go through all submissions today, so I did Apr 28 18:06:30 anything non-android interests me Apr 28 18:07:08 koen: Well, my proposal would be non-android. ;-) Apr 28 18:19:48 morning people and trolls Apr 28 18:22:30 hey mranostay Apr 28 18:22:37 gm mranostay Apr 28 18:22:48 mranostay: Who's a troll? Apr 28 18:24:37 I mean... good afternoon. Apr 28 18:51:17 trollsnacks for all Apr 28 18:52:39 mmm snacks Apr 28 18:58:45 morning mranostay Apr 28 19:10:29 can you pre-order? Apr 28 19:16:02 fandrew: isn't preorder for when something hasn't been released yet? Apr 28 19:17:01 http://beagleboard.org/Products/BeagleBone%20Black Apr 28 19:27:34 Turl: apparently not: http://uk.farnell.com/images/en_UK/bespoke/promotions/mroCat/PreOrder_awaitingDelivery.png Apr 28 19:29:43 isn't that called a backorder? Apr 28 19:29:46 anyway :) Apr 28 19:30:16 flowsnake: try element14, after adding to cart it says " Apr 28 19:30:17 1 will be available for delivery on 3 Jun, 2013 Apr 28 19:30:48 hm.. that's like 1 month >.< I thought it said may Apr 28 19:30:50 Turl: you mean fandrew? Apr 28 19:31:14 farnell/element14 Apr 28 19:32:27 it did say may at one point Apr 28 19:32:46 digikey says 30/4 Apr 28 19:32:52 that's in two days Apr 28 19:33:42 Turl: Yeah.. it sucks to be in the UK. :-( Apr 28 19:34:06 doesn't digikey ship worldwide? Apr 28 19:34:14 especially since they keep showing soccer shows there when the guide clearly says football Apr 28 19:36:13 does anyone have a link to pre-order the new beaglebone black?
