**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Thu Jul 10 02:59:58 2014 Jul 10 05:54:14 hello I have a question about my beaglebone black not booting..... Jul 10 05:54:56 I think I bricked my beaglebone black by allowing 5V to hit the AIN0 analog input. Jul 10 05:55:12 Is there any way to salvage my board or is it dead? Jul 10 06:02:20 Can anyone give me some info on determining if my beaglebone black is bricked beyond repair? I have tried to boot from microSD with an image and nothing lights up. I've even tried a flasher microSD boot and no go. I bricked it by putting 5V on one analog input. Ideas? I can't get an answer from google. Jul 10 06:03:01 no lights? Jul 10 06:03:07 not bricked, burned Jul 10 06:03:21 So it's done huh? Jul 10 06:03:23 start soldering Jul 10 06:04:03 how do I know what got burned? Is it the processor? Is there a way to find out? Jul 10 06:04:23 yes, you have to know how to do board level repair Jul 10 06:04:51 soldering iron, meter, oscilloscope Jul 10 06:05:22 might be a simple fix. Jul 10 06:05:51 which I would charge a minimum of $100 to even look at Jul 10 06:05:57 get a new one Jul 10 06:06:09 use the old one to learn repair Jul 10 06:06:10 Yeah, that's what I thought. Jul 10 06:06:46 How would I learn repair from it. Do you recommend any books, website, etc? Jul 10 06:07:43 these things are disposable, it's not worth it unless you feel a great need to know how Jul 10 06:08:24 mrfrijole: have you connected a serial cable? Jul 10 06:08:37 if i was trying to fix it, i would look at the schematic, take a guess what got zapped, use a meter, replace the cheaper parts, try again,... Jul 10 06:08:38 No I haven't, just by USB. Jul 10 06:08:50 no lights KotH Jul 10 06:08:55 it's toast Jul 10 06:08:56 mrfrijole: then the first thing to do is to connect a serial cable to the board Jul 10 06:09:00 BobKitten: not necessarily Jul 10 06:09:17 mrfrijole: if you dont get anything there, measure the power supply points on the board with a DMM Jul 10 06:09:18 how much will a serial cable cost him? Jul 10 06:09:22 5usd Jul 10 06:09:24 and a meter? Jul 10 06:09:28 10usd Jul 10 06:09:37 well I already have a meter Jul 10 06:09:37 he's a long way to a new one from there Jul 10 06:09:39 ok, a good one is 100usd Jul 10 06:10:03 I even have an oscilloscope I can pull out of the attic... Jul 10 06:10:06 mrfrijole: what have you done last, with the bord Jul 10 06:10:09 board* Jul 10 06:10:25 oh, if you have a scope, go to it Jul 10 06:10:39 What killed it is that I accidentally allowed 5V on the AIN0 input that can only take 1.8V Jul 10 06:11:10 ouch Jul 10 06:11:25 that pin is most likely gone Jul 10 06:11:25 are there fuses or diodes in the thing? Jul 10 06:11:36 like i said, might be easy Jul 10 06:11:42 and probably took half the soc with it Jul 10 06:11:42 to fix, not to find Jul 10 06:11:49 mrfrijole: get a new bbb Jul 10 06:12:05 mrfrijole: even if you get it working, you cannot be sure everythign works correctly anymore Jul 10 06:12:18 Ok, so now that you know what I did you recommend just getting a new board...right? Jul 10 06:12:21 mrfrijole: unless you are financially constrained... Jul 10 06:12:26 mrfrijole: yes Jul 10 06:12:40 mrfrijole: the effects of overvoltage are hard to predict Jul 10 06:12:45 send me your oscilloscope and i will send you my rev b Jul 10 06:13:02 :) Jul 10 06:13:11 hmmm... Jul 10 06:13:26 Depends where you live....shipping might cost more than me just buying a new one ;) Jul 10 06:13:33 true Jul 10 06:13:43 you dont need a scope to check the power supplies Jul 10 06:13:47 which is the first step Jul 10 06:13:51 mrfrijole: if i send you a couple of bbb and bluesteal, can i get a MDO3024 ? Jul 10 06:14:57 av500: the AM3359 is fried, most likely Jul 10 06:15:00 umm...if you can get me 85 beaglebones then I'll get you the MD03024.. Jul 10 06:15:06 av500: 5V on a 1.8V pin Jul 10 06:15:38 mrfrijole: sounds like a deal Jul 10 06:16:11 I'll try and google connecting my beaglebone by serial. Jul 10 06:16:37 But if the lights don't turn on is it even possible I'll get anything? Jul 10 06:16:43 no, it is dead Jul 10 06:16:57 "it's dead, jim" Jul 10 06:17:34 I'm so mad at myself for doing this... Jul 10 06:17:47 try usb power and the barrel plug, if no lights, it's toast Jul 10 06:17:50 mrfrijole: shit happens Jul 10 06:17:59 mrfrijole: you dont know how much electronics i've fried Jul 10 06:18:07 we 've all blowed up lots of more expensive things Jul 10 06:18:41 yeah at this price point it's not the end of the world, but still annoying Jul 10 06:19:47 btw, what is the am3359? Jul 10 06:19:55 is that the processor? Jul 10 06:20:12 ß Jul 10 06:20:26 http://www.ti.com/product/am3358 Jul 10 06:30:03 So the analog inputs go straight into the processor huh? Jul 10 06:32:40 yes Jul 10 06:33:02 Any recommendations on ways to avoid this in the future? Jul 10 06:33:21 Other than using common sense, obviously.. Jul 10 06:37:55 check connections twice before applying power Jul 10 06:38:57 see http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slwu061a/slwu061a.pdf Jul 10 06:39:07 it is for differential inputs Jul 10 06:39:15 but it gives some basics Jul 10 06:39:23 of how should it be done Jul 10 06:40:18 and check other ti reference designs Jul 10 06:40:27 they have pretty good ones for ADC Jul 10 06:42:28 yeah, I'm gonna get a logic level converter to keep me from burning thru the bbb's Jul 10 06:42:34 Thanks everyone for your help!! Jul 10 06:42:48 uhmm.. a logic level converter does not help with analog inputs Jul 10 06:42:52 I thought you said analog Jul 10 06:43:27 but you could use an opamp to do the same (and protect your soc input) Jul 10 06:44:09 well, I'm sure I used the wrong wording but I think I just want a circuit that just steps down the input before it gets to my analog in Jul 10 06:44:11 or put in separate ADCs for pennies Jul 10 06:44:21 it's called a voltage divider Jul 10 06:44:33 if you want something very simple Jul 10 06:45:38 yup, that's what I had and it all went bad when I connected the analog into the Vdd Jul 10 06:47:25 well they work so you just messed up :) Jul 10 06:48:53 mrfrijole: use an opamp Jul 10 06:48:58 i agree Jul 10 06:49:01 a good idea Jul 10 06:49:08 with a gain of 1 Jul 10 06:49:12 mrfrijole: get a copy of tietze&schenk and read it Jul 10 06:49:12 if needed Jul 10 06:49:29 doble agree with book choice Jul 10 06:49:30 isnt that a german book? Jul 10 06:49:41 it is translated into all lang i think Jul 10 06:49:45 apperantly there is an english translation as well... of a 10y old version Jul 10 06:49:52 but for that purpose it's good enough Jul 10 06:49:52 i had no idea its that popular :o Jul 10 06:50:00 it is a bible Jul 10 06:50:05 day: it's _THE_ electronics book Jul 10 06:50:13 day: better than any other i've ever seen Jul 10 06:50:14 like Kernigan Ritchie for C languadge Jul 10 06:50:31 Wow, perfect...just what I needed! Jul 10 06:50:36 http://tietze-schenk.com/tsbook.htm Jul 10 06:51:26 mrfrijole: if you know german, get the german version Jul 10 06:51:39 mrfrijole: if not, the english one should be good enough Jul 10 06:52:25 mrfrijole: please note, that it contains semiconductor stuff only. although there is a very short chapter on L/R/C anything that is not semiconductor is not covered Jul 10 06:52:47 mrfrijole: the german title means litteraly "semiconductor electronics techniques" Jul 10 06:53:48 Thanks everyone, it's getting late and I need to sleep. You've been awesome! Jul 10 06:54:15 mrfrijole: for the rest, i recomment the circuit designers companion by wilson Jul 10 06:54:49 well Analog Device and Texas Instrument have very good articles Jul 10 06:56:24 I will grab a copy of that too Koth...thanks! Jul 10 06:57:21 buying books doesnt mean much if you dont read them Jul 10 06:58:00 bye! Jul 10 06:59:23 day: hey! you are insulting me! Jul 10 06:59:24 ;) Jul 10 07:03:16 actually even a chance that he will read it - is already good enough Jul 10 07:04:14 maquefel: i just dont think, buying a ton of books at once makes sense. I bought 2 books during my university time. :X Jul 10 07:07:16 day: why do you think he is currently studying ? most of my books were bought after graduating Jul 10 07:11:10 gm Jul 10 07:16:02 hoi woglinde Jul 10 07:33:31 how to disable sleep with debian wheezy 7.5 ? Jul 10 07:33:41 BBB sleeps every 5 minutes :( Jul 10 08:09:40 freezevee: sleep? the board certainly doesn't sleep Jul 10 08:09:51 it does Jul 10 08:09:58 after some minutes Jul 10 08:10:04 it turns down automatically Jul 10 08:10:05 so it becomes unreachable over the network? Jul 10 08:10:10 I just flashed it Jul 10 08:10:18 it shuts down even the leds Jul 10 08:10:26 then I press power and wakes up Jul 10 08:10:53 power is given from usb through a wall adaptor & tried with usb from a laptop also Jul 10 08:11:06 I haven't tried the recent images, but that's news to me Jul 10 08:11:12 does the board wake up or boot? Jul 10 08:12:07 Hi, I'm trying to cross compile for the beagleboard. I'm using several libraries that I've cross compiled in a folder that is different than on target. How can I specify to the compiler where the shared libary .so file is on target? Jul 10 08:12:57 In other words, it compiles, but I get this error while trying to run on the beaglebone: error while loading shared libraries: Jul 10 08:13:17 error while loading shared libraries: libGeographic.so.12: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Jul 10 08:16:30 there are many ways, putting them into the standard locations helps, LD_LIBRARY_PATH too or other LD_* hacks Jul 10 08:16:51 tbr: wakes up Jul 10 08:17:01 tbr: it might hibernate, I have no idea Jul 10 08:17:17 tbr: the truth is that I can't keep it up for more than some minutes Jul 10 08:19:04 that's really weird, and this is a standard image? no modifications? where from? Jul 10 11:02:22 Hi.. am wondering if beaglebone black has good power saving features.. anyone know? Jul 10 11:02:43 it doesn't do power saving really, why would you want that? Jul 10 11:02:58 that said, it's power consumption is moderate Jul 10 11:03:23 2.5Watt max =) Jul 10 11:03:53 Battery life & heat.. I want to build a DIY phone and phones spend 99% of time doing nothing Jul 10 11:04:05 nice Jul 10 11:04:31 then this is not really for you, I guess Jul 10 11:04:45 any small boards that you know of that do? Jul 10 11:04:58 but I'm not sure if you will find anything particularly well suited Jul 10 11:05:32 you could look at boards that use mobile phone SoCs Jul 10 11:05:43 arduinophone :) Jul 10 11:05:48 :> Jul 10 11:06:12 I'm sure you could translate rotary dial and on-off-hook to AT commands using an Arduino Jul 10 11:06:17 certainly. Jul 10 11:06:23 or some cortex m0/m3/m4 Jul 10 11:07:06 like EFM32-something will even give you some minimal linux environment, if used appropriately Jul 10 11:19:33 OK. Thanks for the tips. Will check those out. Jul 10 11:58:34 The EFM32 people have really good docs & useful white papers.. http://www.silabs.com/Support%20Documents/TechnicalDocs/implementing-low-power-graphical-displays.pdf Jul 10 12:32:44 just use *any* microcontroller Jul 10 12:33:12 the simpler it is the lower power it can usually achieve, if it is a modern design Jul 10 12:34:00 yeah probably you could implement a super simple dial system even on a 4bit thing Jul 10 12:36:55 I am not able to cross Compile qt5 for beagleboard - xm can anybody help me with this regard? Jul 10 13:12:04 hey Jul 10 13:12:48 i'm about to blog my weatherstation using a bbb and i'd like to use the dog logo. what kind of license is it? Jul 10 13:14:29 hmm, did you check if that's covered on the page or the wiki? Jul 10 13:16:46 not yet, it's easier and faste to ask ;) Jul 10 13:17:15 flikr has some logo under creativ commons but i'm not sure if they are Jul 10 13:20:51 i think i'll take one from flickr and link to the page Jul 10 13:25:50 ragnar76: poke jkridner once he wakes up Jul 10 13:26:03 ? Jul 10 13:26:15 * jkridner yawns Jul 10 13:26:19 good moaning Jul 10 13:28:04 CC-BY-SA, though you should be careful not to use it to make it look like your project is "official"... as in, you need to credit BeagleBoard.org Foundation for use as a 3rd party. That's how we read the CC-BY-SA. Jul 10 13:28:24 one version of the logo has a special license, http://beagleboard.org/logo Jul 10 13:28:43 because it says "Compliant"... Jul 10 13:29:14 if you derive something, please check for permission. Jul 10 13:30:15 We like people using the logos to promote their use of Beagle.... just not to make it look like they *are* beagle... this generally only becomes an issue in clones, thus the http://beagleboard.org/logo program. Jul 10 13:31:02 ragnar76: we want you to have fun with the logo, so be nice and we'll be nice too. :-) Jul 10 13:33:51 jkridner: you need a "powered by" logo if you don't have one already :P Jul 10 13:34:54 jkridner: i'm a big friend of cc-by-sa-nc Jul 10 13:35:07 thurgood: we really, really do. Jul 10 13:35:30 thurgood: we did some drafts... let me dig up... needed some terminology about it. Jul 10 13:35:46 I think the "friend of Boris" was kinda cool. Jul 10 13:35:50 so, i thinks it's nice enough when i link to your page and wiki ;) Jul 10 13:36:18 ragnar76: sounds nice to me. Jul 10 13:37:52 * vvu +1 the title "friend of Boris" Jul 10 13:44:59 nc-considered-harmful: there was recently a german court ruling that use of a cc-by-sa-nc work by the public broadcaster constituted commercial use. It's a wrong ruling but nc complicates things, use carefully. Jul 10 13:49:17 myself: do you have any sources? (i speak german) Jul 10 13:49:49 the rtklib documentation is probably the best you'll find, and it may be available in more languages. Jul 10 13:49:55 ragnar76 search heise Jul 10 13:50:20 oh wait, sorry, braknfart. I was thinking about another conversation Jul 10 13:50:42 https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20140326/11405526695/german-court-says-creative-commons-non-commercial-licenses-must-be-purely-personal-use.shtml Jul 10 13:51:57 myself: links to heise ;) Jul 10 13:56:46 if in doubt, i'll ask an lawyer who works for the fsfe Jul 10 14:09:51 I have no idea, it's just something I hear of and thought it might be relevant here. Jul 10 14:37:45 I'm curious if the ethernet and storage controller on the beagle is USB like it is on the Raspberry Pi. Does anyone know? Jul 10 14:38:23 ethernet no Jul 10 14:38:35 usb mass storage is usb indeed Jul 10 14:38:38 but the emmc is not Jul 10 14:38:48 nor is the sd card Jul 10 14:40:12 k. Had a problem with several pi's where they spontaniously loose their storage. No vibration, no overclock, one is in a 62F environment. A power-cycle and it comes back like nothing happened but it's causing some problems so I was thinking about trying out a beagle. Jul 10 14:40:39 storage as on sd card? or usb? Jul 10 14:40:47 usb is flaky on rpi, thats a known issue Jul 10 14:41:13 SD card Jul 10 14:41:32 thats not over usb on rpi Jul 10 14:42:07 only thing connected is ethernet and power. One wall mounted in a closet, the other sitting in a data center. Patriot class 10 cards. No cause that I've been able to determine Jul 10 14:46:27 do you have any logging on those setups? could be some log messages that give an idea what happens Jul 10 14:52:10 smurray: yup, remote syslog indicates the device keeps working just fine except it has no file system. Therein lies the problem, the applications keep responding on the net but are unable to save to the disk which disappeared, and I can't log in as it can't check my credentials and I can't use cron to reboot because it can't find the reboot binary. Jul 10 14:52:27 no errors other than that in the logs though Jul 10 14:54:07 NameBrand: put reboot on a ramfs of some sort, and/or http://www.adafruit.com/blog/2013/01/18/auto-reboot-a-hung-raspberry-pi-using-the-on-board-watchdog-timer-piday-raspberrypi-raspberry_pi/ Jul 10 14:55:17 NameBrand: I'm a little surprised there's no associated kernel message Jul 10 14:58:57 smurray: yea nothing I saw Jul 10 15:01:45 myself: hmm... I'll have to see if I can find a way for that to work, maybe checking to see if a file exists? As far as I can tell system load is small during the file-system unavailablity. Jul 10 15:19:57 jkridner: heh, speaking about logos: http://www.can-newsletter.org/engineering/standardization/140709_internet-of-things-and-open-source-hardware_cia/ Jul 10 15:20:35 hmmm.... Jul 10 15:20:44 don't see credit given there. Jul 10 15:20:45 I'm just starting with the beagle black and installed debian on the Sd card. When I try to call apt-get upgrade the beagle crashes at 16% Jul 10 15:21:28 16% what? Jul 10 15:21:53 of the upgrading process. The Heartbet LED stopps Jul 10 15:22:00 escamoteur: do you have enough free space? Jul 10 15:22:01 escamoteur: probably it doesn't crash, but the flash is just full Jul 10 15:22:27 it's an 8GB SD Jul 10 15:22:28 jkridner: check their original page though. journalists suck at license comprehension Jul 10 15:22:42 escamoteur: how big is the filesystem? Jul 10 15:22:47 I had the same thought tbr Jul 10 15:23:05 escamoteur: i.e. df -h / Jul 10 15:23:10 escamoteur: how do you power the beagle? Jul 10 15:23:11 http://www.can-cia.org/index.php?id=1909 seems to indicate they are the originators Jul 10 15:23:21 what do you mean with size of filesystem? Jul 10 15:24:01 are you sure the file system uses the entire disk? Jul 10 15:24:21 normaly apt-get dont crash at full disk Jul 10 15:24:23 escamoteur: the size and use of the filesystem can be displayed with the command: df -h / Jul 10 15:24:42 normally apt-get doesn't give percentages, other than percentage downloaded. Jul 10 15:24:47 nope Jul 10 15:25:15 vagrantc apt-get calculates the packages Jul 10 15:25:18 (except for very new versions of apt, but only when called as "apt" rather than "apt-get") Jul 10 15:25:19 form the file Jul 10 15:25:30 someone today was claiming the board goes to sleep and wakes up if you press power on. But I got an interrupt and couldn't follow up. Jul 10 15:25:32 if I call df I have enough space Jul 10 15:25:32 and that uses a lot of ram Jul 10 15:25:45 so maybe the RAM is broken Jul 10 15:25:53 hmmm Jul 10 15:25:57 escamoteur: how do you power the beagle? Jul 10 15:26:01 by USB Jul 10 15:26:04 or what tbr says Jul 10 15:26:10 from a PC? Jul 10 15:26:11 stressing out Jul 10 15:26:13 yes Jul 10 15:26:25 no, from a USB hub Jul 10 15:26:28 haha Jul 10 15:26:30 failure Jul 10 15:26:36 why Jul 10 15:26:38 is the hub powered? Jul 10 15:26:42 yes Jul 10 15:26:52 what is the power rating of the psu? Jul 10 15:27:07 psu?? Jul 10 15:27:15 power supply Jul 10 15:27:16 of the hub Jul 10 15:27:36 but in general: try attaching it directly to your PC instead of the hub, that will rule out that as a source of problems Jul 10 15:27:54 ok, I will try Jul 10 15:28:28 tbr using a seperate dc will rule out that error Jul 10 15:30:33 this time it stopped at 12% Jul 10 15:31:02 escamoteur: could you cut and paste exactly what it's displaying? Jul 10 15:31:50 there are several points where apt-get will display a percentage, and 16%, 12%, etc. isn't very specific. Jul 10 15:31:56 ok, just a moment, I have to change to another browser Jul 10 15:32:22 escamoteur: and use something like pastebin.com rather than pasting the whole thing into irc. Jul 10 15:42:24 escamoteur: if it turns off, what happens if you press the power button on the board? Jul 10 15:42:26 reliable usb power output on a computer is kind of variable Jul 10 15:42:48 I now connected an external power source Jul 10 15:42:58 and it works Jul 10 15:44:49 mrpacket_, you there? Jul 10 15:45:27 thanks Jul 10 15:51:25 I want to share a folder between my linux pc and the beagle. which is the best solution? NFS? Jul 10 15:53:22 escamoteur, NFS is my preference when sharing anything between linux hosts -- including BBBs Jul 10 15:56:31 If you are new to linux it's all a bit timidating Jul 10 16:01:25 If I share a folder via the Mint GUI, is this a NFS share? Jul 10 16:14:17 probably smb, but not 100% sure Jul 10 16:24:00 escamoteur try sshfs Jul 10 16:46:46 I would like to boot my BBB in single user mode, but I can figure out where / what the variable should go in the boot scripts. I have a Rev C BBB, runing Debian Jessie (latest image from RCN) on a microSD card. Jul 10 16:47:58 I found this post, but there is no longer a "mmc_args". I tried to add it and it didnt' seem to work: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/beagleboard/OptGrfQK7mQ Jul 10 16:48:22 It's also two years old... Jul 10 16:51:49 I'm trying to mount an nfs folder from my BBB, but the mount commend does not return Jul 10 16:53:46 more correct I get a time out Jul 10 17:05:20 escamoteur, you've installed nfstools .. you've started the rpcbind service? Jul 10 17:05:42 can you ping the host? can you ssh the host? Jul 10 17:06:10 yse, I'm connected by ssh Jul 10 17:06:36 do you get any message in /var/log/messages? Jul 10 17:07:50 ah, just found out, that the nfs-kernel service was not running. now I get an access denied while mounting Jul 10 17:08:26 :) Jul 10 17:09:22 what could be the problem Jul 10 17:13:33 escamoteur: did you use sudo to mount? Jul 10 17:14:20 I'm looged in as root Jul 10 17:14:40 ah Jul 10 17:15:37 I got it, I had the wrong ip-dress in the exports file. I thought I have the whole Network Adress , buit wasn't Jul 10 17:16:00 that would do it :P Jul 10 17:16:08 Thanks Jul 10 18:20:08 hello guys Jul 10 18:21:47 does anyone know why in nelson's latest debian boneblack flasher image there aren't any dtbo's? I can't load any virtual cape, like uart (i'm on kernel 3.8.13) Jul 10 18:35:44 I don't imagine rcn has use for dtbo's the required files for the kernel are dtb's and they're in the boot folder used by uboot Jul 10 18:36:06 I didn't think 3.8 had dtb .. does it? Jul 10 18:40:02 latest debian flasher I'da thought wouldn't be 3.8 kernel any more .. but I cuold be mistaken Jul 10 19:04:47 debian is 3.8 Jul 10 19:04:56 aand uses dtb Jul 10 19:08:37 I sit corrected :) ty nyt- Jul 10 19:31:45 Hi Jul 10 19:32:02 anyone has a BeagleBone original? (the white version) Jul 10 19:32:23 I just need if someone could take 2 pictures Jul 10 19:36:18 rui: I might be able tomorrow. Jul 10 19:37:44 Rui: Describe the pictures you need, I might be able to lay hands on one tonight. Jul 10 19:38:16 It's just one from upside and downside! that would be awesome! Jul 10 19:38:38 I really need those pictures during the weekend Jul 10 19:43:35 are you there ion? Jul 10 19:45:42 myself: are you there? Jul 10 19:45:55 it's for a BeagleBone book. Jul 10 19:49:16 rui: Oh, i have a crappy cell phone camera, i’m sure you’d want to get a better photo for a book. Jul 10 19:50:23 ion: hum... you don't have by any chance a way to take a photo with someone else camera? Jul 10 19:57:42 Rui: just overall front and back, on some sort of white-ish backdrop? Or like, sitting on a table? Jul 10 20:24:20 Hello, I'm newbie in Beagle and I'm developing a project using BBB where I read some sensor data using GPIO pins. One collegue of mine have already worked with BBB migrating an old system implemented using PIC microcontrollers to a C# application using BBB, but he has faced some problems at accessing the pins using the /proc and /sys interface, which seem to be really slow if compared to the previous PIC system. It looks that interface (filesystem) Jul 10 20:24:20 is not suitable to systems which require some performance at using GPIO. I'd like to know if this is true or if the performance issue he had was indeed caused by the Mono/C# runtime (open file, read/write and than close it). Now I'm using C++ to develop, which doesn't have runtime issues, but can be slow if the slowness is caused by the filesystem interface Jul 10 20:25:40 All libraries in C++ to access GPIO in C++ linked in beagleboard website use the filesystem interface Jul 10 20:26:00 if you need performance from gpio write a kernel level driver Jul 10 20:31:50 thurgood: so is writing a kernel drive the only way to get a performance better than the filesystem interface? Jul 10 20:37:32 only way I'm aware of, without adding a pic off processor to filter the data Jul 10 20:43:09 ok, thx Jul 10 21:06:29 or write PRU code Jul 10 21:08:04 hi Jul 10 21:08:44 i need to use an external HDD and a microphone via USB Jul 10 21:08:51 with de beaglebone black Jul 10 21:09:04 so i will need a powered HUB Jul 10 21:09:28 microphone draw 0.5A Jul 10 21:10:39 should I use a HUB for this task? Jul 10 21:10:42 which? Jul 10 21:12:01 just as you said, a powered USB hub Jul 10 21:12:07 wsxxz: any powered hub should work Jul 10 21:12:40 mrpackethead ? Jul 10 21:12:46 hello Jul 10 21:12:58 well hot damn .. you're there :P~ Jul 10 21:13:00 i need to check the power consum? Jul 10 21:13:32 if the hub have 1A... a 500mA mic woll explode? Jul 10 21:13:47 nope Jul 10 21:14:04 he usb specs say each port gets 5V 500mA Jul 10 21:14:09 break? Jul 10 21:14:22 oook Jul 10 21:14:31 also current is a "maximum" value Jul 10 21:14:53 so an external hdd should draw only 500mA? Jul 10 21:15:04 i thought more like 1.2A Jul 10 21:15:42 depends on the hdd, some are usb powered, some are using 2 usb ports and some have an external psu Jul 10 21:16:17 most hubs don't really limit the current per port Jul 10 21:16:30 tbr: cheap hubs Jul 10 21:16:51 yes, but even more expensive ones I've seen didn't Jul 10 21:17:24 darn, then i have a better one. i cannot charge my galaxy s3 on it Jul 10 21:17:27 a raspi is more suitable for use 2 usb device of 500mA? Jul 10 21:17:43 or it needs an hub too? Jul 10 21:17:46 wsxxz: what would make you think so? Jul 10 21:18:05 for the 2 ports on the board Jul 10 21:18:20 yes, and it's USB sucks even more than on the BBB Jul 10 21:18:36 so true Jul 10 21:18:46 also the two ports are also just a hub Jul 10 21:18:59 ahhah lol Jul 10 21:19:13 and less than 500ma right? Jul 10 21:19:20 no idea Jul 10 21:19:29 they probably don't bother to limit current Jul 10 21:19:37 because i'm looking for a durable board first of all Jul 10 21:19:42 so it will deliver whatever the PSU of the board can Jul 10 21:19:52 and a beablebone seems more durable than a raspi Jul 10 21:21:07 wsxxz: easiest way is to try it out. just buy any usb hub. you cannot harm your equipment Jul 10 21:21:46 ragnar76: except that the really cheap hubs feed back 5V into the upstream port... :-/ Jul 10 21:22:04 and apparently blow ya mobo .. Jul 10 21:23:13 tbr, veremit: okay never heard of Jul 10 21:23:39 so I've heard .. I can't imagine how .. Jul 10 21:23:49 musta been a cheap mobo too XD lol Jul 10 21:24:02 stupid elect engineer Jul 10 21:24:36 i think a good one will cost at least 10€ (~$15) Jul 10 21:25:10 powered? Jul 10 21:25:20 yes Jul 10 21:26:52 powered from 9v? Jul 10 21:27:14 -sigh- Jul 10 21:29:00 they have internal power regulation circuitry usually converting input voltage of round 9-12 v and supplying the hub chip with 5v or maybe even 3.3v Jul 10 21:29:14 dunno, there a different ones out there, mine has 12V 4A Jul 10 21:33:45 wsxxz: beside that. what do you want to build? sounds lika an audiorecorder Jul 10 21:37:47 ragnar76: yes maybe Jul 10 21:38:08 the forst function is the audiorecorder Jul 10 21:38:15 fitst* Jul 10 21:38:57 fucking smartphonr Jul 10 21:39:05 :) Jul 10 22:07:29 gn8 Jul 10 22:12:53 hi Jul 10 22:13:18 is the use of the Sd slot suitable tor external memory storage? Jul 10 22:13:23 (black) Jul 10 22:19:26 yes Jul 11 02:21:46 Hey guys, I just set up my BBB with an ubuntu penguin 12.04 image on an sd card. Jul 11 02:22:18 I also added an ubuntu desktop and it runs slow, is there any way to improve the speed by increasing the ram or something? thank **** ENDING LOGGING AT Fri Jul 11 02:59:58 2014
