I've reached around 70KBps when torrenting (again mainly uploading), so a 20KBps to be deemed as overhead isn't really justifiable.

I recall you said you had two N900. If you swapped those parts on the second N900 and it still works. Then its a very good chance that on your main N900 some chip is dead/fried.
