I never wrapped my head around it but it seems each circular polarization filter is acting like a linear polirizer on one of the both sides and circular on the other

While *L|R* acted like normal linear polarizers, changing between 90° and 5% by rotataing the filters 90° relative to each other, the setum R*|*L had no dependency at all regarding orientation of the filters relative to each other
