**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Fri Nov 23 03:00:01 2018 **** BEGIN LOGGING AT Fri Nov 23 05:33:47 2018 Nov 23 09:54:33 Hi, I'm trying to install the python-gobject package. Nov 23 09:54:48 sudo doesn't seem to work... Nov 23 09:55:08 and when I log into the device as root via ssh and wifi, it's really slow Nov 23 09:55:26 and apt-get install fails because apt-get can't lock the dpkg file Nov 23 09:55:43 dpkg/lock, sorry Nov 23 09:55:49 install rootsh ? Nov 23 09:56:02 KotCzarny: yeah, I wanted to do that, but it doesn't seem to be in the catalogue Nov 23 09:56:18 KotCzarny: I have the Extras repository, so that seems odd Nov 23 09:56:24 and if you have ssh working already, just do ssh root@localhost Nov 23 09:56:28 to get root Nov 23 09:56:35 KotCzarny: ah!!! Nov 23 09:56:40 Man, that should have been obvious Nov 23 09:56:50 but why can't I get rootsh? Nov 23 09:57:00 and to speed up ssh via wifi, just take down power saving in wifi options Nov 23 09:57:19 it's much more convenient to use pc and ssh to n900 Nov 23 09:57:48 KotCzarny: Where are the wifi options? In Settings? Nov 23 09:57:48 by default wifi power saving is at max, which kills ssh interactivity Nov 23 09:58:08 yes, it's probably in advanced wjen you edit connections Nov 23 09:59:10 KotCzarny: Ok, found it Nov 23 10:00:00 KotCzarny: hm. Still very slow. I probably need to restart the connection, yes? Nov 23 10:00:17 might be, try Nov 23 10:00:19 KotCzarny: so why can't I see rootsh? Nov 23 10:00:27 KotCzarny: in the application manager, I mean Nov 23 10:01:51 ah, good, installing python-gobject is working... sorta. It's hanging at "waiting for headers"... probably the wifi again Nov 23 10:02:22 or weird returns from dns Nov 23 10:02:36 restarting the interface worked Nov 23 10:02:40 it's installing Nov 23 10:02:53 turn off power saving temporarily to confirm? Nov 23 10:03:14 KotCzarny: power saving is off now (I think) Nov 23 10:03:18 *checking* Nov 23 10:03:50 argh Nov 23 10:03:52 it's on again Nov 23 10:03:56 :) Nov 23 10:03:56 Is that normal? Nov 23 10:03:59 nope Nov 23 10:04:07 try disconnecting Nov 23 10:04:14 editing connection, then connecting Nov 23 10:04:32 ok, it automatically restarted the connection Nov 23 10:04:37 maybe I didn't hit the right button :( Nov 23 10:05:05 ok, now it shows as off Nov 23 10:05:37 for me intermediate setting is good enough Nov 23 10:05:45 but it depends on ap and network quality Nov 23 10:07:04 my AP is suboptimal, it's running OpenBSD 6.2 with an atheros interface. It works, but the driver doesn't support the full range of protocols Nov 23 10:08:43 Ok, so... the rootsh problem; why am I not seeing this in the program manager? Nov 23 10:09:13 because it's cli program most likely without proper category set Nov 23 10:09:28 KotCzarny: but if I choose "all" shouldn't it then appear? Nov 23 10:09:33 which might be intentional Nov 23 10:09:35 yeah Nov 23 10:09:38 all wont show all Nov 23 10:09:57 all won't show all? Nov 23 10:10:00 nope Nov 23 10:10:02 Ok - how do I find it, then? Nov 23 10:10:12 apt-cache search rootsh Nov 23 10:10:13 :) Nov 23 10:10:26 it's not for regular joe anyway Nov 23 10:10:37 ah, so I can't install it through the App Manager? Nov 23 10:10:49 truly i dont remember Nov 23 10:11:07 was long time ago, and havent reinstalled my n900 for many years Nov 23 10:11:31 and if you have ssh working, you dont really need it Nov 23 10:12:19 KotCzarny: ok. I'll use ssh then. No need to complicate things further. Nov 23 10:12:38 make an alias or put a script named rootsh into /usr/local/bin Nov 23 10:12:52 that will call ssh line Nov 23 10:14:26 ok, thanks for the tip Nov 23 10:49:14 I think rootsh is installable in HAM Nov 23 10:49:52 do you see it in pkg list? Nov 23 10:50:57 * KotCzarny is a bit lazy to fire up ham Nov 23 11:33:26 KotCzarny: I used Faster Application Manager to install it Nov 23 11:35:33 oh, then it's there, but fam is discouraged, you know? Nov 23 11:35:51 ~hamvsfam Nov 23 11:35:51 hamvsfam is probably https://mg.pov.lt/maemo-irclog/%23maemo.2013-10-28.log.html#t2013-10-28T10:44:33, or http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=93227 Nov 23 11:36:05 ~fam Nov 23 11:36:05 i heard fapman is Faster Application Manager, a frontend for apt which uses own repositories catalog, and shouldn't be used to do system upgrades (like CSSU), or actually for anything since ~speedyHAM. It also does "apt-get autoremove" after every operation, by default. In short, it's been identified as source of system corruption and thus deprecated, or see ~hamvsfam Nov 23 11:36:18 ~speedyham Nov 23 11:36:18 speedyham is probably 30 times faster than HAM https://github.com/community-ssu/hildon-application-manager, now included in CSSU. Nov 23 12:54:46 rhombus: in HAM you got a few option flags in settings menu, one of them makes truly all packages visible Nov 23 12:56:09 but the canonical method to install CLI progarms (except rootsh, for obvious reasons) is via cmdline by apt-get install Nov 23 13:01:17 rootsh however must be there when you got the right repos enabled Nov 23 13:02:16 ~pkg Nov 23 13:02:17 hmm... pkg is http://maemo.org/packages/ Nov 23 13:02:48 http://maemo.org/packages/view/rootsh/ Nov 23 14:07:04 oh I didn't know fam is so badly reputed Nov 23 14:07:25 who knows, maybe it got better Nov 23 14:08:06 so I will choose to use CSSU HAM instead of FAM now Nov 23 14:09:57 but to be honest the main speed barrier here is that at China the speed to access maemo.org is quite slow ;-) Nov 23 14:33:04 ~ham Nov 23 14:33:04 from memory, ham is Hildon Application Manager. Slow as molasses. Anticipate you got time for a beer or two until it finishes whatever it does, or see ~speedyham **** ENDING LOGGING AT Sat Nov 24 02:59:58 2018
