**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Tue Mar 12 02:59:57 2019 Mar 12 04:36:52 Is it technically possible to make a USB combination cable with a full-size Type A plug on one end and both a Type C plug and a microUSB plug on the other end? If yes then is it feasible to productise such a cable? Apparently StarTech does not offer such a cable even though I have bought and use their full-size USB Type A plug to microUSB plug/miniUSB plug combination cable. StarTech does make a combination cable with a full-size USB Type A plug on one Mar 12 04:36:52 end and a microUSB plug on the other end with adapters attached to the end of the cable to convert the microUSB plug to an Apple Lightning plug or a USB Type C plug but this cable costs around 25 CAD each so I have only two and you have to manually connect and disconnect things on the end of the cable; the microUSB/miniUSB combination cable has both the microUSB and miniUSB plugs on a rigid T-shaped part on the end of the cable so nothing has to be manually Mar 12 04:36:53 connected and disconnected on the cable. Mar 12 04:39:54 I have one cable which has three wires coming from usb a Mar 12 04:41:00 they have micro usb, lightning? (that apple thing which doesn't care which way it is entered) and samsung tablet plug Mar 12 04:41:24 it came with powerbank Mar 12 04:42:55 I know I can buy microUSB↔USB Type C adapters. I already have some but they are small and easy to lose because they are not permanently attached to a cable. Mar 12 04:43:35 maybe look from ebay for such cable Mar 12 04:44:39 Vajb: Yes, eBay is the ultimate dollar store. Mar 12 04:47:21 it has never failed to amaze me with its stock... Mar 12 05:55:31 brolin_empey: >>both a Type C plug and a microUSB plug on the other end<< would you like the USB-C negotiates 24V VBUS getting fed to the micro-USB plug? Mar 12 05:55:57 surefire device killer cable Mar 12 06:01:24 DocScrutinizer05: I do not know a lot about USB Type C because I have little experience with it so far. I asked about the possibility and feasibility of creating such a cable because I thought that someone like you in this channel would know more than me about the involved hardware/technology. Mar 12 06:09:13 brolin_empey: it's feasible but stringly deprecated since it's dangerous Mar 12 06:09:24 strongly Mar 12 06:10:57 you could connect a usb2 peripheral to the micro-plug while on C plug another device negotiated VBZS=9, 12, even 24V Mar 12 06:11:13 VBUS* Mar 12 06:11:34 all clear? Mar 12 06:11:46 DocScrutinizer05: OK, thank you for your knowledgeable answer. Mar 12 06:11:55 yw :-) Mar 12 06:12:21 oh, they have different voltage Mar 12 06:13:10 usb3 (C) _can: negotiate higher supply voltages, yes Mar 12 06:14:02 one of the "big assets" of USB3 Mar 12 06:14:13 fast charging Mar 12 06:14:31 even of tablets / laptops Mar 12 06:15:05 24V iirc 2A = ~50W Mar 12 06:15:36 vs 5V@1.5A = 7.5W Mar 12 06:20:17 brolin_empey: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_hardware#PD Mar 12 06:20:52 20V@5A = 100W Mar 12 06:25:57 Vajb: brolin_empey: ^^^ needs special chargers which funny enough come with USB-A-F receptacle(s) Mar 12 06:34:31 datasheet for USB-C *charger chip*(!!!): 117 pages Mar 12 06:52:34 http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/tps65982.pdf Mar 12 10:25:58 Yer, you have to increase the voltage to transfer the same amount of energy via such small a conductor. Mar 12 10:27:16 P=I*V 24Vdc @ 2A = 48W Mar 12 10:30:31 when do we touch, when do we kiss? Mar 12 15:42:36 It's SELV not HV... Mar 12 22:22:23 evening Mar 13 00:20:59 DocScrutinizer05: The Wikipedia article you referenced says “As of 14 June 2007, all new mobile phones applying for a license in China are required to use a USB port as a power port for battery charging.”. Does that mean the USB port has to use a standard USB connector? Does Apple still use their own connector instead of a standard USB connector on Apple iOS computers intended for sale in or use in the PRC? **** ENDING LOGGING AT Wed Mar 13 02:59:57 2019
