**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Mon Sep 25 02:59:56 2006 Sep 25 13:29:14 I'm thinking of switching from OpenWRT to UcSlugC. I'd like to pick up a couple NSLU2s locally and eventually order a bunch cheap. Any recommendations? Are they even sold at retail anymore? Sep 25 13:45:03 Kyler: AFAIK they are still being manufactured and sold in many retail locations. Sep 25 13:45:38 mwester: I just looked at Best Buy and didn't see any. I'll keep looking. Thanks. Sep 25 13:46:20 RE: UcSlugC -- UcSlugC is a platform for further development - it doesn't do much of anything as it stands. It's more like an embedded OS platform for a development team to take, and build a new firmware release from. Is that what you're looking for? Sep 25 13:46:23 has anyone here compiled an mt-daapd nightly on their slug (w debianslug) Sep 25 13:46:36 BTW: check officemax, office depot Sep 25 13:53:42 mwester, is UcSlugC compiling on HEAD? Sep 25 13:55:28 Right now, today, HEAD is in a remarkable state of questionable buildability. The team is in the middle of replacing the Intel-proprietary NIC drivers with open-source drivers, and the state of HEAD changes hour to hour. Sep 25 13:56:47 Last I knew, UcSlugC compiled, but I don't think anyone has been using it. Probably best to build it from the OpenSlug 3.10 baseline if possible. Sep 25 14:02:11 EvilDevil: are you using the mt-daapd application as well as ccxstream? Sep 25 14:15:47 barnseenio, i have both ccxstream and mt-daapd running, might they be interfering with each other? Sep 25 14:23:43 no idea, i dont use ccxstream. im trying to get a nightly of mt-daapd compiled on the slug to include flac support. have you tried that? Sep 25 14:35:24 when i compiled it moaned about cannot find sqlite.h or libflac (event though i have libflac installed on slug) Sep 25 14:47:19 barnseenio, i'm only using ccxstream Sep 25 14:48:05 ahk thanks. im huting out a bit of mtdaapd compiling help Sep 25 14:48:09 *hunting Sep 25 14:48:14 mwester, i thought there was some issues with gcc 4.1 patches Sep 25 14:51:46 barnseenio, maybe you need the dev-packages of libflac and/or sqlite Sep 25 14:57:10 Yes, there was an issue with gcc 4.1 patches and UcSlugC. I think someone was working on that; perhaps it's fixed. But I'd be surprised if the recent ethernet changes didn't break it too. Sep 25 15:07:21 also, it seems that mt-daapd compatibility is somewhat broken with itunes 7 on mac os x. i can see the slug shares, but when i try access them, i get an empty list Sep 25 15:30:54 ugg - im not upgrading itunes app now - it works and im sticking with it! Sep 25 15:39:31 EvilDevil: i think your rifght about the dev packages Sep 25 16:05:13 mwester: UcSlugC might or might not be what I want. I'm coming from OpenWRT and I'd like something similar. If it boots, runs SSHd and lets me install packages I'm all set. Sep 25 17:08:33 Kyler, you really should try OpenSlug. it's less work, but if you're using the internal flashmemory, you can't install many packages. UcSlugC uses less space on the flash and the packages are smaller, but you'll have to build and customize your own flashimage. See also http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/FAQ/FirmwareMatrix Sep 25 17:09:02 Kyler, you can still use an external usb root filesystem for OpenSlug Sep 25 17:09:35 EvilDevil: The NSLU2 has *twice* as much flash as I've been using. It'll feel spacious. Sep 25 17:09:57 I'll give OpenSlug a try. Thanks! Sep 25 17:10:27 Kyler, IIRC OpenSlug doesn't use uclibc, which fattens the flashimage Sep 25 17:11:01 EvilDevil: If I have a MB or two I'll be happy. (I might want more someday for Asterisk though.) Sep 25 17:11:27 Kyler, the ucslugc wiki page says, that openslug has ~800kbyte free (i'm not sure if this information is up-to-date) Sep 25 17:12:36 EvilDevil: That surprises me. I've been working with 4MB of flash in OpenWRT. I assumed that having 8MB in the NSLU2 would leave me with much more. Sep 25 17:13:16 Kyler, OpenWrt uses uclibc and (white russian) uses kernel 2.4 Sep 25 17:13:55 It's sounding like I might as well stick with OpenWRT. Sep 25 17:15:13 Kyler, i'm not sure if OpenWrt builds for the NSLU2. I know there's a build target for the NSLU2/IXP425 but i'm not sure if it's working Sep 25 17:16:29 No, I'm thinking that I'll use OpenWRT hardware too. I was willing to give up the wireless and network switching capabilities in exchange for more RAM. But it doesn't sound like that's what I'd get. Sep 25 17:17:24 EvilDevil: We're looking at having about 1MB of space left with SlugOS 4 Sep 25 17:17:41 but then that's compressed, so there is an unpredictable amount more Sep 25 17:18:29 Kyler, get a netgear wgt634u (8 mb flash, 32 mb ram, 1xusb2.0 port, ~30-40 Euros refurbished at ebay) if you want to stick with OpenWrt. I'm running kamikaze on it Sep 25 17:19:20 Kyler, +5 10/100 mbit/s ports, atheros 54g mini-pci Sep 25 17:19:27 Yeah, I have a friend who swears by the 634U. I just switched to the Asus WL-500GD and I appreciate having two USB ports. Sep 25 17:19:40 It looks like a great board Sep 25 17:19:43 miniPCI too Sep 25 17:19:54 and VLAN switch Sep 25 17:20:46 Kyler, but it's not as fast as the nslu2 Sep 25 17:21:12 blaster8, + serial header on the board Sep 25 17:21:21 RS-232 or TTL? Sep 25 17:22:11 3.3v iirc Sep 25 17:22:39 http://wiki.openwrt.org/OpenWrtDocs/Hardware/Netgear/WGT634U Sep 25 17:23:58 Yeah, TTL Sep 25 17:24:10 still, that's no big deal Sep 25 17:24:23 I'd buy one if I could think of a use for it :) Sep 25 17:24:29 usb cell phone data cables ;) Sep 25 17:24:50 blaster8, i'm using mine as a wlan AP + bluetooth AP Sep 25 17:25:14 I have a 266MHz Geode (x86) embedded board which is my AP Sep 25 17:29:02 unfortunately there's no kmod for the ipsec copro :/ Sep 25 17:34:41 hi is there an scsi-idle package for opendebianslug avalible? Sep 25 19:39:28 hello all, I was wondering if there is a tool similar to top to use with unslung? Can't find an ipk of top Sep 25 19:45:40 hmm Sep 25 19:45:44 i have top on my slug Sep 25 19:46:43 but i can't tell you what package provided it i'm afraid Sep 25 19:46:48 something like procps? Sep 25 19:47:31 ill have a look then, thanks Sep 25 19:48:32 there is a procps Sep 25 19:48:39 which gave stuff like uptime Sep 25 19:48:43 might have given top too Sep 25 19:48:46 otherwise i have no idea Sep 25 19:49:30 the real top is in the procps package Sep 25 19:51:57 yea, that's the one. Just installed it. Thanks Sep 25 22:09:15 anyone? Sep 25 22:10:28 drif: yes? Sep 25 22:13:41 any clues why on another slug (both running unslung5.5b) on irssi scands are displayed as ?s and on another as normal chracters Sep 25 22:42:23 scands? Sep 25 22:42:26 scandinavian chars? Sep 26 00:13:54 sdh: yes **** ENDING LOGGING AT Tue Sep 26 02:59:56 2006
