**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Thu Oct 05 02:59:57 2006 Oct 05 06:27:44 hi Oct 05 06:28:08 is there a way to confirm that the devices connected are operating at USB2, rather than USB1? Oct 05 09:51:08 after performing a port scan on my network i am pleased that the only port viewable as open is the port 22 i use for ssh access to my slug. Oct 05 09:51:40 however, should i enable port-knocking, move this to a none-default port, or just accept that the chances of someone gaining access to my slug via ssh are very low? Oct 05 09:55:00 if it's available to public internet, I would definitely change the port Oct 05 09:55:22 eliminates about 99.999% of the bruteforcing attempts Oct 05 10:13:38 ok, that's what i thought Oct 05 10:13:47 that's just a case of editing the sshconf file? Oct 05 10:13:54 (and the port forwarding on my router)? Oct 05 10:21:27 yup, sshd_config or wherever your config is kept Oct 05 10:26:18 thanks :-) Oct 05 10:27:31 hmm, weird, now a scan is showing that 80(http) and 21(ftp) are open Oct 05 10:27:42 which they should be, just confused to why they didn't show before Oct 05 10:46:53 ok Oct 05 10:46:57 something weird is going on Oct 05 10:47:18 i can ssh into my slug using my network ip address (192.168.2.3) Oct 05 10:47:31 but i can't do it via my dyndns name Oct 05 10:47:55 but the website hosted on my slug CAN be viewed at the dyndns url as expected Oct 05 10:54:31 haha, ignore that Oct 05 10:54:40 i was being silly and forgot to change the port forwarding on my router! Oct 05 11:43:33 hmm, also, i've de-underclocked my slug, but to add myself to the list of successes i have to login to yahoo, and i really don't want to Oct 05 12:11:05 morning Oct 05 12:11:22 installing unslung today Oct 05 12:11:35 should I prep my usb drive beforehand? i.e. partition/format? Oct 05 12:11:47 or will unslung do it for me? Oct 05 12:13:00 anyone? :) Oct 05 12:32:06 gah Oct 05 12:32:13 i can answer you now if you#d stayed! Oct 05 12:43:40 Lunar_Lamp: a tad too late... Oct 05 12:43:56 well yes, i hadn't realised quite how much i'd missed him by Oct 05 12:43:57 heh Oct 05 12:45:50 when I again was only ten secs.. :P but still late nevertheless Oct 05 13:05:40 anyone here? Oct 05 13:06:12 need unslung help :( Oct 05 13:06:34 unslung is only using 2.75 gb of my 250gb drive Oct 05 13:06:37 not sure why Oct 05 13:16:14 re deathster Oct 05 13:16:39 are you using the correct usb-port? Oct 05 13:21:45 I'm using port 1 Oct 05 13:21:51 is that correct? Oct 05 13:23:14 I want this drive to be ext3, and the other port set up to accept an NTFS-formatted disk from time to time Oct 05 13:24:09 does that make sense? Oct 05 13:45:41 isn't port1 used with NTFS on 6.8? Oct 05 13:46:01 hmm, maybe so Oct 05 13:46:08 perhaps I have it backwards Oct 05 13:46:34 so use usb2 Oct 05 13:47:45 ok, will try Oct 05 13:47:48 tnx Oct 05 13:56:14 by default yo should use port2 on unslung 6.8 Oct 05 13:56:30 not sure how that fits in with ntfs though, but i think it still holds Oct 05 15:07:10 hi Oct 05 15:07:21 is there a way to confirm that the devices connected are operating at USB2, rather than USB1? Oct 05 15:24:11 erm, i'm not sure Oct 05 15:24:14 let me just check Oct 05 15:24:28 well, actually, if they are getting power from the usb port then they are usb2 Oct 05 15:25:17 also, you can judge from transfer speed Oct 05 15:25:22 usb2 has a maximum limit Oct 05 15:25:25 sorry Oct 05 15:25:32 the limit for usb2 is much higer than usb1 Oct 05 15:25:45 i'm not aware of any direct way of checking other than if it says in the web interface Oct 05 16:10:51 buona sera :) Oct 05 16:11:21 anyone alive? Oct 05 16:13:58 twostroke, no one here but us zombies Oct 05 16:14:17 joshin: hehe... all you zombies hide your faaaaaceeees *sing* Oct 05 16:15:06 * joshin starts thinking of eating twostroke's brains Oct 05 16:15:47 eating what? Oct 05 16:16:03 * joshin realizes that it would be a small snack Oct 05 16:16:12 Nothing. Nothing at all... Oct 05 16:17:27 lol Oct 05 16:17:28 i'm a little peeeeea *sing another song+ Oct 05 16:17:37 i'm not a zombie! Oct 05 16:17:39 * Lunar_Lamp runs Oct 05 16:17:51 run, Lunar_Lamp, ruuuuuuuuuuuuuun :) Oct 05 16:19:01 * joshin plods along and just as in every monster movie made eventually catches the speedy Lunar_Lamp Oct 05 16:19:45 :-( Oct 05 16:20:58 * joshin ate kfm82sparc's brains Oct 05 16:21:29 So twostroke did you have a question or is your slug behaving perfectly and you're here to gloat? Oct 05 16:22:13 joshin : I am sure I have questions... lemme sort'em Oct 05 16:22:43 cat twostroke | sort -r Oct 05 16:23:02 > /dev/null Oct 05 16:23:06 ls -ef |grep sense Oct 05 16:23:28 make sense Oct 05 16:23:28 make: *** No rule to make target `sense'. Stop. Oct 05 16:23:35 huaaaah Oct 05 16:24:11 i am stuck between installing the unslung firmware and unslinging to HDD Oct 05 16:24:34 telnetting leads to telnet session aborted by nslu2 Oct 05 16:25:04 hmm - error messages? Oct 05 16:25:25 only "connection aborted" right after I press enter when typing in the password Oct 05 16:25:36 typing any other password leads to "wrong password" or so Oct 05 16:26:17 what precisely have you done up to now? Oct 05 16:26:26 and did you remember to boot with drives unplugged etc? Oct 05 16:26:44 twostroke, can't help with unslung. I went straight to openslug. Tried debianslug then went all out and have gentoo-slug running. Oct 05 16:27:45 hehe, i'd love to be using gentoo-slug but i have my slug set up and working, and don't want to lose stuff Oct 05 16:28:17 hmm Oct 05 16:33:23 think I'll come back later to meet somebody to help with unslung :) but anyway it's been fun with you dudes Oct 05 16:33:34 :) Oct 05 16:34:51 cheers :) Oct 05 16:34:53 twostroke - i use unslung! Oct 05 16:34:55 gah Oct 05 16:35:13 and he's quit irc :-( Oct 05 16:40:23 Poor guy is a twostroke motor in a fourstroke world Oct 05 17:49:25 Question about debianslug: I've installed it a few days ago and ipkg installed rsync. I can now run rsync in client mode just fine. Trouble is, I want to have it in daemon mode when started up but there is no /etc/init.d/rsync file to link to in /etc/rc3.d Oct 05 17:51:15 I tried to cheat by making my own /etc/init.d/rsync file that simply is: "/usr/bin/rsync --daemon", make it executable and then make S99rsync in /etc/rc3.d that points at it but it doesn't work. (It will work if I run /etc/rc3.d/S99rsync manually after bootup) Oct 05 18:22:26 anyone know why ipkg didn't give me a /etc/init.d/rsync file when I installed rsync? Oct 05 18:24:29 hello Oct 05 18:24:42 is java pretty useable on unslung? Oct 05 18:29:13 how do you mean? Oct 05 18:31:09 can anyone send me their working /etc/init.d/rsync file please? Oct 05 18:36:56 Lunar_Lamp: I mean, do most java apps run fine under unslung? Oct 05 18:37:23 oh, sorry, i have no idea, not used java on the slug Oct 05 18:37:28 ok Oct 05 18:37:34 tbh, i didn't even know it was possible to install java Oct 05 18:38:44 http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/OpenSlugJavaInstallWorkaround Oct 05 18:44:30 that's openslug not unsluing isn't it :-s Oct 05 19:50:23 hello, does anyone run a ftp server that supports fxp? Oct 05 19:50:36 what's fxp? Oct 05 19:51:11 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FXP Oct 05 19:51:22 yeah, just googled for it Oct 05 19:51:43 i think you'll have to look at the diff ftp options on the slug, and then google for them and fxp :-/ Oct 05 19:51:52 the site doesn't mention fxp i dont think Oct 05 19:51:53 Lunar_Lamp, u should be the channel op, active all the time :) Oct 05 19:52:22 heh, i go back to my final year at uni tomoz, so hopefully (for the sake of my degree) that will change Oct 05 19:52:52 :) Oct 05 19:53:49 twas caplink811 that was the super-active guy when i was taking my first steps with the slug though Oct 05 20:00:47 vsftp supports fxp :) Oct 05 20:03:27 ah ok Oct 05 20:03:30 i use vsftp Oct 05 20:03:43 pretty simple setup - i just followed the guide on the nslu2 site Oct 05 20:03:51 textbased? Oct 05 20:07:06 well, it has textbased, but i can navigate to it by typing "ftp://192.168.." and entering password Oct 05 20:43:23 connectied died, did anyone answer my question :) ? Oct 05 20:44:37 Hs anyone tried powering an NSLU2 over a usb hub ? For me that works but when I connect a HD to that same hub it is not detected the nslu2. Oct 05 20:44:52 So thats HDD <----------> powered USB hub <------------> NSLU2 Oct 05 20:45:55 Mind you, I connected the HDD to the hub before powering on Oct 05 20:56:46 To answer my own question: http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/FAQ/USBHubs Oct 06 00:45:02 hey guys Oct 06 01:01:40 ever have the problem where no matter what, your slug never finishes booting? Oct 06 01:18:20 i've done that... gonna give it a reflash Oct 06 01:18:34 taht used to work for me back in my openwrt days Oct 06 01:21:48 eee too tired Oct 06 01:21:51 i'll fix it i nthe morning Oct 06 01:21:54 ttyl all Oct 06 01:22:08 good luck Oct 06 01:23:00 thanks Oct 06 01:23:03 i think i might need it Oct 06 01:23:08 *trembles* Oct 06 02:41:38 is this a good place to ask about problems with downloaded packages? Oct 06 02:46:44 guess not **** ENDING LOGGING AT Fri Oct 06 02:59:57 2006
