Dec 01 11:30:29 Hello, I'm trying to set up mij NSLU2 as webserver with php, Dec 01 11:30:36 but tried phpthttpd, appWeb and Apache Dec 01 11:30:43 but they all hang te slug after reboot. Dec 01 11:30:45 Anyone ideas? Dec 01 11:31:10 Someone tried this lately? Dec 01 11:37:30 Anyone awake on this channel? Dec 01 11:37:53 :) Dec 01 11:37:58 Rarely :| Dec 01 11:38:28 I've just put debian on my slug and installed apache2, which works fine Dec 01 11:39:02 although I've yet to put php on it, so I can't help there Dec 01 11:39:09 ok Dec 01 11:39:18 apache worked fine, without reboot Dec 01 11:39:23 yep Dec 01 11:39:40 didn't try reboot, so cant say if it went awry there Dec 01 11:39:45 but I've rebooted the slug and it didn't hang Dec 01 11:39:56 lucky you ;-) Dec 01 11:40:00 :) Dec 01 11:40:13 Are you using debian too? Dec 01 11:40:28 no, I've put unslung on it Dec 01 11:40:43 oh ok... never tried it, so I doubt I can help Dec 01 11:41:01 didn't really dug into the different types of slug os's Dec 01 11:41:14 unslung seemd to be the best for 'starters' Dec 01 11:41:38 had a server setup with slackware previously, but didn't do the install myself Dec 01 11:42:01 the debian installer is really simple now Dec 01 11:42:05 just some dditionl sw later on, like mailserv/sendmail, www/apache etc Dec 01 11:42:27 is the a real difference in usage with debian? Dec 01 11:42:39 and installation is simple Dec 01 11:42:56 is it more flexibe than others or something like that? Or just what you're used to? Dec 01 11:43:35 I'm not sure, never tried unslung, there's a lot of software in the repository Dec 01 11:43:53 and a lot of support Dec 01 11:44:43 they all use the same packages, not? using ipkg? Dec 01 11:47:23 I can't find the comparison page.. I use aptitude rather than ipkg Dec 01 11:48:30 I'll look into the debian options. Doesn't really matter what is runs on... Dec 01 11:48:41 as long as it runs ... Dec 01 11:48:55 :) Dec 01 11:49:11 right, off for lunch o/ Dec 01 11:49:20 only need ftp and www, potentially mailserv for forwarding. Dec 01 11:49:34 sorry I couldn't help Dec 01 11:49:48 don't mind. have a nice meal Dec 01 11:57:39 If anyone can addres the php failure using unslung, please post. Dec 01 11:58:07 If I'm not here anymore, I'l read the logs at nslu2-linux.org. Dec 01 11:58:43 so, for the record: I used: ipkg install apache php-apache eaccelarator Dec 01 11:58:56 It worked immediatelyon port 8000. Dec 01 11:59:32 Rebooted the slug for cron purposes and it never comes back up. Dec 01 12:00:12 had it with php-thttpd/appWeb and apache. Dec 01 12:00:40 after 3 complete 'start-over' moments I'm about to kick out the slug :( Dec 01 12:24:03 for the logs @rvoijen dont use eaccelarator Dec 01 12:24:22 try cheroke with php its working for me Dec 01 12:25:30 the biggest difference between unslung and debian is unslung has pre configured samba if you can configure samba Dec 01 12:25:56 you could try debian Dec 01 12:27:14 dont know if that is in the installer too i used the old bootstrap thing Dec 01 18:00:58 hi Dec 01 18:01:07 can anyone tell me how big a memstick needs to be for debonaras?? Dec 01 19:27:23 one question...i got a python-script running the server for my KiSS DP-500 DVD-player...where do i put it so it will start when i start my NSLU2? Running uNSLUng :O) Dec 01 19:49:26 Is any1 awake? :) I got a python-script running the server for my KiSS DP-500 DVD-player...where do i put it so it will start when I boot my NSLU2? Running uNSLUng Dec 01 20:47:09 here to pester you all again :) Dec 01 20:48:19 anyone know what to do when u get "format failed" in the NSLU log? Dec 02 00:34:35 anyone around? Dec 02 00:34:50 still trying to get my slug to work :-/ Dec 02 00:35:03 how did you break it then? Dec 02 00:35:19 i didnt really break it... its just that i cant unsling it Dec 02 00:35:23 very annoying Dec 02 00:35:40 did you follow the instructions precisely? Dec 02 00:35:46 yes Dec 02 00:36:04 failed at step 5 of the unslinging part Dec 02 00:36:20 says the disk hasnt been formatted by the nslu thingie Dec 02 00:36:44 looks ok in web portal, but when i check logs the format failed Dec 02 00:40:00 hi martinju Dec 02 00:40:15 now im trying to access the disk from windows, but it turns out that my win install is borked.... *sigh* why cant stuff just work :-/ Dec 02 00:40:19 heya texture! Dec 02 00:41:10 i found out that hte disk fails to format when connected to the slug... Dec 02 00:41:36 read a bit and it seems like it cant format if there are already partitions on the disk Dec 02 00:41:51 sooo... im trying to remove the partitions, but i dont know how Dec 02 00:42:10 hey, martinju, why not try and see if you can install openslug on your hdd? if it works, then you can give still unslung another try. you'll be sure the hardware is ok. Dec 02 00:42:28 martinju: you can use fdisk on the slug Dec 02 00:42:36 like last night Dec 02 00:42:42 you need to erase at least the first 448 bytes of the disk, then there is no more partition table Dec 02 00:42:49 or hmm, 446 iirc Dec 02 00:42:50 yeah... hold on, let me reconnect the stuff Dec 02 00:46:37 lets see Dec 02 00:47:10 whats the syntax to remove a partition? or erase everything? Dec 02 00:47:28 on linux Dec 02 00:47:29 ? Dec 02 00:47:38 yes... telneted to the slug Dec 02 00:47:48 there are several ways Dec 02 00:48:20 ok Dec 02 00:48:26 whats the easiest? Dec 02 00:48:38 fdisk /dev/sda Dec 02 00:48:51 type p to print the partition table Dec 02 00:48:58 well, if the disk is sda, you could either use fdisk, or simply write zeroes to the beginning of the disk, zeroing out the partition table Dec 02 00:49:16 like: dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1 Dec 02 00:49:18 then if you type d, you will be prompted for the partition number to delete Dec 02 00:49:23 would zero the MBR Dec 02 00:49:26 fdisk gives me some stuff about cylinders, then back to commandline Dec 02 00:49:51 las night, you were able to print the partition table Dec 02 00:50:04 yes Dec 02 00:50:10 hmm... Dec 02 00:50:18 argh... i suck... how do i get out of the DD thing? Dec 02 00:50:24 out? Dec 02 00:50:24 just typed dd and enter Dec 02 00:50:28 ctrl-c Dec 02 00:51:33 no idea why you don't get a command prompt from fdisk. did you swap ports? maybe try fdisk /dev/sdb Dec 02 00:51:52 ok Dec 02 00:52:04 unable to open Dec 02 00:52:33 seems ive overwritten the boot thingie now Dec 02 00:52:36 so your disk is really /dev/sda. could you paste the message you get when you type fdisk /dev/sda? Dec 02 00:52:37 lets see if i cna format Dec 02 00:53:10 if needed, you can try to make your partitions in fdisk, too Dec 02 00:53:24 then format them from the command line in unslung Dec 02 00:53:33 ah ok Dec 02 00:53:59 its looking good though, still formatting... when i got the error it only formatted for about 5 sec then said it was done Dec 02 00:54:26 format failed :-/ Dec 02 00:54:41 oooooh. so it's nothing like your tries of yesterday? you didn't hear your hdd working for a while, before? Dec 02 00:54:44 duh Dec 02 00:56:23 i would try to partition and format in unslung with fdisk, then try to unsling right on. Dec 02 00:56:35 ok... now theres something i dont know how to do :D Dec 02 00:59:50 i don't remember the commands to format the partitions... looking for them. but if you wanna try to format in unslung, first paste the output of "fdisk /dev/sda" Dec 02 01:00:59 Partition 1 is already defined. Delete it before re-adding it. Dec 02 01:01:03 for all three Dec 02 01:01:55 mkfs.ext3 etc Dec 02 01:01:56 tou typed /dev/sda, right? not /dev/sda1 ? Dec 02 01:02:09 http://pastebin.ca/264080 on the bottom there Dec 02 01:02:12 yes Dec 02 01:03:00 joga, yupp thanks. Dec 02 01:03:29 martinju: try without the "-l" Dec 02 01:03:40 ok Dec 02 01:04:51 says the same thing but adding reboot system to update partition tables Dec 02 01:05:18 but you get at a command prompt, don't you? Dec 02 01:05:26 did you reboot the thing after you deleted the partitions? Dec 02 01:05:34 no command prompt Dec 02 01:05:43 and no, i didnt... silly of me oO Dec 02 01:05:55 aaah Dec 02 01:06:34 hmm... says its formatted now Dec 02 01:07:13 i need to disconnect the drive and reboot the slug to get telnet working right? Dec 02 01:08:37 dunno. you can't access your slug anymore? Dec 02 01:08:51 not through telnet when the drive is connected at bootup Dec 02 01:09:28 i gotta telnet to the slug, log in, then connect drive... kinda weird Dec 02 01:11:38 still says its not formatted by the linksys utility Dec 02 01:11:56 Target disk is /share/flash/data doesnt seem right Dec 02 01:13:37 i wonder where disk1|disk2 are defined Dec 02 01:13:55 seems disk2 is pointing to a flash drive or something Dec 02 01:13:56 disk 1 & 2 are defined by Linksys. Dec 02 01:14:01 or a presumed flash drive Dec 02 01:14:08 ok Dec 02 01:14:11 The names no longer mean anything Dec 02 01:15:18 the web portal thignie says the drive is formatted Dec 02 01:15:41 It's easily fooled. Dec 02 01:15:47 i can access the whole thing from windows Dec 02 01:16:01 Formatted means something unusual to Linksys Dec 02 01:16:14 ' Dec 02 01:16:16 hehe Dec 02 01:16:21 So, where are you in the process at this point? Dec 02 01:16:37 at the /sbin/unsling disk2 part :-( Dec 02 01:16:59 Ok... I presume from the IRC log that it's failed here before... Dec 02 01:17:10 yes Dec 02 01:17:11 What type of device are you using? Dec 02 01:17:26 nslu2 + lacie porsche 320gig drive Dec 02 01:18:59 the logfile says all tries to format the disk failed Dec 02 01:19:44 Ah, a big disk. Well, we can give it a try... Dec 02 01:20:24 Do you have anything smaller - perhaps even a flash disk? Dec 02 01:20:45 hmm Dec 02 01:20:48 lets see Dec 02 01:21:08 i dont :/ Dec 02 01:21:29 Ok. Have you ever been able to format it in the past, with the original Linksys firmware? Dec 02 01:21:54 i think i managed the first time i tried, on port 1 Dec 02 01:23:06 Well, let's give it another try and see what happens, if you have a few moments? Dec 02 01:23:10 sure Dec 02 01:23:25 i need to beat this damn pile of electronics into submission :) Dec 02 01:23:41 It's probably partially partitioned right now from a failed format, can we return it to a single-partition FAT/NTFS state? Dec 02 01:24:00 (using a windows box, for example) Dec 02 01:24:17 thats the other problem... i cant connect to the drive on my win box Dec 02 01:24:28 That's a pretty bad sign. Dec 02 01:24:47 i think its an error in my win config tbh Dec 02 01:25:04 i get errors like RPC server not available and such Dec 02 01:26:33 is the fdisk on the slug limited somehow? Dec 02 01:26:35 strange. ok. so what do we have to wipe the disk clean, partition-wise? Dec 02 01:27:06 joga showed me the dd command thing... write zeros or something Dec 02 01:27:15 Yes, fdisk on Unslung is the Linksys fdisk. Linksys's version is required for the web-formatting to work, but the fdisk is customized and crippled -- you cannot format the normal way. Dec 02 01:27:24 ok Dec 02 01:28:16 the wifey has a mac btw.. i cant use it very good, but its there Dec 02 01:28:24 I don't know the dd trick, I suppose it should work. The requirement is not that the disk have a valid filesystem, but rather that it not have anything on it that can fool the Linksys web format utility into preserving partitioning or data. Dec 02 01:28:40 ok Dec 02 01:29:32 hmm... let me just log on to the mac, brb Dec 02 01:30:44 We can find out quick enough. If you recall the "dd" trick, go ahead and do so. Type "sync" and "DO_Reboot" to reboot the slug (with disk attached). Then check the status from the web page. If it says "not formatted", then you should be able to telnet in after you enable telnet. (I know the instructions say you can't but that's only if the device is formatted -- thus, if you can, then... Dec 02 01:30:46 ...it must be that the device is not formatted... strange way to verify, but it works and it's easy :)) Dec 02 01:31:16 ok im on the mac Dec 02 01:31:32 laptop, gonna see if i can connect the drive to it Dec 02 01:32:18 works, asks me to format it Dec 02 01:33:41 I CAN MAKE IT INTO a do disk here... sorry for caps Dec 02 01:34:39 What's a do disk? Dec 02 01:34:52 nite Dec 02 01:34:57 sorry dos' Dec 02 01:35:27 Ok - that'll do. A quick format if it has that option... Dec 02 01:35:59 ok Dec 02 01:36:55 i think i removed all the partitions now Dec 02 01:37:25 plugging the disk back into the slug' Dec 02 01:38:15 ok, fdisk says it doesnt contain any partitions anymore Dec 02 01:38:25 should i try a format throught the web portal? Dec 02 01:40:01 Sure. But first: Dec 02 01:40:20 get a directory listing of /tmp Dec 02 01:40:36 empty Dec 02 01:40:41 Then start the format, wait a minute, and list it again. Dec 02 01:41:06 I'm looking for a specific file, but I don't recall the name. Dec 02 01:41:28 gotta hand it to mac... plugged in the drive, it recognizes it, asks me what to do, then does it :) Dec 02 01:41:42 It should appear during the format, and it contains three lines or so, each with a list of comma-separated values. Dec 02 01:42:01 says not formatted in web portal, nothing in the tmp dir Dec 02 01:42:16 You've started the format, then? Dec 02 01:42:26 yes, and its finished Dec 02 01:42:37 Can't be done so quickly. Dec 02 01:42:45 format failed in log :-/ Dec 02 01:43:00 Oh. Ok, then something is badly wrong. Dec 02 01:43:09 does the unslinging have to be to an ext3 partition? Dec 02 01:45:32 you must unsling to a valid Linksys "native" disk -- that means three partitions, #1 & #2 are ext3, #3 is swap. #1 needs to contain a directory named "public", #2 needs a specific set of files in a specific format. Permissions must be set correctly. I'm sure there are other constraints, nobody has every really reverse-engineered the mechanism. If anything is NOT correct, then the Linksys... Dec 02 01:45:33 ...firmware will mount the partitions only long enough to find that something is not to its liking, then unmount them and declare the device not formatted. Dec 02 01:46:05 ok Dec 02 01:46:40 how long should a format take? Dec 02 01:47:05 Further, there is some suggestion that if the disk is too large, the Linksys firmware will fail to mount the device from time-to-time. Dec 02 01:47:18 oO Dec 02 01:47:27 that seems very annoying Dec 02 01:48:10 ok, i did format again, and its still running Dec 02 01:48:16 A format of a device that large? I cannot say. I have no devices anywhere close to that, or I think that I would have this problem figured out by now. It should be minutes, probably many minutes (as in get a cup of coffee or eat lunch). Dec 02 01:49:14 Ok, type "ps -ef" -- we're looking for interesting processes, such as "fdisk", "mkfs", "mkswap", and such... Any of those runnign? Dec 02 01:49:39 no telnet up... not sure how to get in without having the slug unplugged at bootup (didnt have that this time) Dec 02 01:50:02 Oops. Dec 02 01:50:21 but its still running... never ran this long before when i formatted Dec 02 01:50:39 Well, before it finishes formatting you should be able to enable telnet, and telnet in. Dec 02 01:51:36 hmm... whats the login/pass then? got admin/uNSLUng when no disk is attached Dec 02 01:51:52 nm, it worked Dec 02 01:52:08 Preparing tmp.zDqgWH in tmp Dec 02 01:52:57 mkfs running Dec 02 01:53:08 sh -c /usr/bin/mkfs.ext3 -m 1 /dev/sda1 2>/ Dec 02 01:53:17 /usr/bin/mkfs.ext3 -m 1 /dev/sda1 Dec 02 01:53:24 good sign? Dec 02 01:53:49 The problem with telnet and disks has nothing directly to do with either. Basically, the problem is that one of the files written to the second partition on the disk during the format is the Linux passwd file. When no disks are present, the Linksys device must use the passwd file in the flash filesystem -- we can set that password, and it's uNSLUng. However, as soon as the Linksys... Dec 02 01:53:51 ...firmware sees a valid formatted hard disk, it switches to the password database on that disk -- and we don't know the passwords there. So, the *real* rule is that you can have disks attached and still telnet in as long as none of them are formatted. Dec 02 01:54:11 BTW, looks good so far. That mkfs should take a while, as the first parttion is quite large. Dec 02 01:54:19 What is the output of "free"? Dec 02 01:54:40 Mem: 30524 30136 388 Dec 02 01:54:45 Swap: 120480 16420 104060 Dec 02 01:55:27 Hmmm.... again? Dec 02 01:55:28 i wonder what we did that made it do all this now? :) Dec 02 01:55:51 That's whats making me crazy. It's unpredicatable. Dec 02 01:56:08 same here... computers are annoying that way. Dec 02 01:56:40 hmm... i think ima ditch windows once and for all when this is done.... linux seems more interesting Dec 02 01:56:42 We need someone with a slug equipped with a serial port, and one of these large drives in order to track down the problem. Dec 02 01:57:02 serial port? there are those kinds of slugs out there? Dec 02 01:57:51 ok, says its done formatting Dec 02 01:58:11 Without a serial port as the console, we're flying blind. It's a simple modification to add in the serial port -- the hardware is there, you just need to add a level-converter to translate to RS232 signal levels. THe wiki describes this in teh howto section. Dec 02 01:58:14 just do /sbin/unsling disk2 and keep fingers crossed? Dec 02 01:58:37 No Dec 02 01:58:45 oki Dec 02 01:59:15 Let's make sure that it worked correctly. What's the output from "mount"? Dec 02 02:00:18 http://pastebin.ca/264134 at the very bottom Dec 02 02:01:09 Ah, good. Can you also list the contents of both /share/flash/data and /share/flash/conf ? Dec 02 02:02:16 updated the pastebin Dec 02 02:04:32 Can't see it. Even flushed my browser caches... :( Dec 02 02:05:08 lost+found public quota.user quota.user~ from data Dec 02 02:05:26 Good. Dec 02 02:05:26 backup_sh.conf config group lost+found passwd from conf Dec 02 02:05:36 server.log share share.info smb.conf smbpasswd from conf Dec 02 02:05:45 tmp upgrade usrgrp.info from conf Dec 02 02:06:05 thats it Dec 02 02:06:46 Ok. Since you've tried to unsling in the past, let's make sure you're ready to unsling again. type "ls -la /" and search for ".unslung" and ".sdroot" Dec 02 02:06:54 argh Dec 02 02:07:00 disconnected Dec 02 02:07:26 I saw that; did you see my last note (regarding the ls -la?) Dec 02 02:07:57 no... Dec 02 02:08:15 let's make sure you're ready to unsling again. type "ls -la /" and search for ".unslung" and ".sda1root" or ".sdb1root". Dec 02 02:08:23 in the root dir? Dec 02 02:08:50 Yes. Dec 02 02:09:03 .unslung is there Dec 02 02:09:23 not the others Dec 02 02:09:30 Ok. That's perfect. Dec 02 02:09:42 sweet! progress! :D Dec 02 02:09:51 So, now that all looks so very promising, let's push our luck. Dec 02 02:10:33 im ready :) Dec 02 02:10:54 Type "DO_Shutdown" (or shut the thing down from the web interface) -- let's make sure that it can remount the drive from a shutdown state. Dec 02 02:11:06 ok Dec 02 02:11:56 Then unplug the disk, boot back up, telnet in... Dec 02 02:12:44 ok its shut down... unplugging disk Dec 02 02:13:37 and all i want to do is run twonky or wizd :) Dec 02 02:13:47 and perhaps some other media thingies Dec 02 02:15:21 ok, its all back up Dec 02 02:16:10 Ah, well then -- have I got a deal for you! ;) :D I can give you a smaller drive that will unsling easily, and you can send me that nice new 320GB disk :D Dec 02 02:16:23 lol Dec 02 02:16:54 it was very cheap actually... or at least in swedish terms Dec 02 02:17:18 Ok, if you are telnetted in, cd /var/log, and type "tail messages" -- note the last lines of the file; we'll be interested in anything *new* appearing after those lines... then plug in the disk. Dec 02 02:18:22 ok i was a bit fast with plugging in the drive Dec 02 02:18:35 should i reboot and do it over again? Dec 02 02:18:49 No Dec 02 02:19:14 Let's find out what the state currently is -- what is the output from the mount command at this point? Dec 02 02:20:05 exactly the same as last time Dec 02 02:21:05 Well, that's good then. Can you also test to see that the same contents are present in the two directories as well (/share/flash/[conf, data])? Dec 02 02:22:01 same stuff Dec 02 02:22:15 Excellent. Dec 02 02:52:57 sure Dec 02 02:54:09 from web portal uNSLUng status: Unslung to disk2, /dev/sda1 Dec 02 02:55:06 seems i can telnet in with my new pass too :) Dec 02 02:56:08 and what does "mount" say now? Dec 02 02:56:44 (rw) on all lines Dec 02 02:57:21 http://pastebin.ca/264166 Dec 02 02:58:22 good, but very strange. Ok - it's unslung. I would recommend that you do "ipkg update" next, and if you have an SSH client (such as putty), you should install "OpenSSH" (no configuration necessary to simply replace telnet with something more secure and not requiring that you enable it each boot). Dec 02 02:58:52 ok Dec 02 02:59:24 It remains a mystery as to why some large drives do not format correctly -- and in your case why the linksys firmware mounted it for read-only... but as long as it continues to behave, enjoy! Dec 02 02:59:29 thanks a lot for everything mate, i would surely have gone insane without your help :D **** ENDING LOGGING AT Sat Dec 02 02:59:57 2006
