**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Tue Jan 01 02:59:57 2008 Jan 01 15:13:23 hey guys Jan 01 15:13:54 just got my slug and install cd was broken in the box.... anyone know link to d/l from..... can find installation manuals but no setup Jan 01 15:16:50 ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/network/NSLU2-SetupWizard.zip Jan 01 15:19:58 cheers Jan 01 15:21:29 with unslug v 6 its best to have hdd with unslung on usb2 aint it? Jan 01 15:35:14 hdd/flash drive Jan 01 15:35:25 If you want to run other packages Jan 01 15:37:11 hi. Jan 01 17:38:54 Hi all, and happy new year! Is it possible to get usb audio to work on unslung, or is it necessary to install debian/nslu2? The page at http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/SlugAsAudioPlayer Jan 01 17:39:24 leaves me unclear on this. I have a USB audio dongle that I've verified works on my desktop linux box, but so far I haven't had any Jan 01 17:40:01 luck getting it to work with my unslung slug. What I've done so far: Jan 01 17:40:04 # ipkg install mpd kernel-module-audio kernel-module-soundcore madplay Jan 01 17:40:15 # madplay foo.mp3 Jan 01 17:40:23 audio: /dev/dsp: No such device Jan 01 17:41:17 The wiki leaves me unclear on whether I need to install alsa, and also on whether it's possible to install alsa on unslung...? Jan 01 17:48:34 is there a /proc/asound ? Jan 01 17:49:08 lsusb should tell you if its needed... Jan 01 17:49:27 or found Jan 01 17:49:34 have you loaded the kernel module/restarted after the update? Jan 01 17:51:42 # ls /proc/asound Jan 01 17:51:42 ls: /proc/asound: No such file or directory Jan 01 17:52:12 I don't seem to have an lsusb executable. Is there a package I should install in order to get it? Jan 01 17:53:20 I have restarted after doing the install of the two kernel modules. Am I supposed to do Jan 01 17:53:33 the insmod stuff at http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/SlugAsAudioPlayer ? The wiki Jan 01 17:53:45 bcrowell: you may have to manually create the /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer files with mknod Jan 01 17:53:47 makes it sound as though that's only if you're running slugos? Jan 01 17:54:05 But in general, Unslung is poor with audio, as it is stuck on the old 2.4 kernel Jan 01 17:54:37 lsusb can be found using http://ipkgfind.nslu2-linux.org/ Jan 01 17:55:16 (lsusb would be a file in the package, so be sure to select the correct type of search) Jan 01 17:57:38 I am guessing the modules aren't loaded Jan 01 17:58:24 hallo, im try to get work a double cable usb hard disk Jan 01 17:58:49 k, exist a module already? Jan 01 17:59:53 ? Jan 01 18:00:29 that was not in response to double cable Jan 01 18:04:49 Thanks, all, for the responses. I installed the usbutils package, and here's the output of lsusb: Jan 01 18:04:58 Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000 Jan 01 18:04:58 Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000 Jan 01 18:04:58 Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0d8c:0103 C-Media Electronics, Inc. Jan 01 18:07:10 ShadowJK, re "I am guessing the modules aren't loaded," can you point me to any documentation on how to check whether they're loaded, and load them if necessary? Jan 01 18:07:20 ShadowJK: ok, but do you know something? Jan 01 18:07:42 lsmod will show you a list of loaded modules Jan 01 18:07:45 Mwester, any documentation on how to manually create /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer files with mknod? (Mknod doesn't seem to have a man page.) Jan 01 18:08:02 ^^ usb hard disk double cabled Jan 01 18:08:06 bcrowell, http://www.ss64.com/bash/mknod.html Jan 01 18:08:11 # lsmod Jan 01 18:08:15 Module Size Used by Tainted: P Jan 01 18:08:19 ufsd 164872 0 (unused) Jan 01 18:08:19 x1226-rtc 3664 0 Jan 01 18:08:19 rbuttons 1304 0 (unused) Jan 01 18:08:19 pbuttons 800 0 (unused) Jan 01 18:08:19 ixp425_eth 17116 0 (unused) Jan 01 18:08:20 ixp400 608216 0 [ixp425_eth] Jan 01 18:15:09 In my lsmod output, does the fact that there are no module names with "snd" in them indicate that I don't have the right modules loaded? If so, how would I Jan 01 18:15:24 fix that? Jan 01 18:16:28 I have a /lib/modules/2.4.22-xfs/kernel/drivers/sound/soundcore.o file ... should I be loading that? Jan 01 18:17:37 odd, I have a /dev/dsp on my unslung Jan 01 18:17:48 But yes the modules are not loadead Jan 01 18:17:50 loaded* Jan 01 18:18:52 I actually do have a /dev/dsp, as shown by an "ls /dev/dsp;" I think the message "audio: /dev/dsp: No such device" indicates that Jan 01 18:19:36 bcrowell: Use "insmod" to load the modules. You'll need /dev/mixer as well as /dev/dsp; the major/minor numbers are the same as on your other linux system (use ls -l to display them). Jan 01 18:19:37 (oops) /dev/dsp does exist, but just isn't configured. Jan 01 18:19:59 Yes, there's nothing on the device end of /dev/dsp until the module loads. Jan 01 18:22:25 okay, so I'm thinking this is what I should do: Jan 01 18:22:43 insmod /lib/modules/2.4.22-xfs/kernel/drivers/sound/soundcore.o Jan 01 18:22:56 depmod -a Jan 01 18:23:40 mknod /dev/dsp audio 14 3 Jan 01 18:23:55 mknod /dev/mixer audio 14 0 Jan 01 18:25:39 Oh, maybe s/audio/c ... ? Jan 01 18:25:54 you already have dsp dont you? Jan 01 18:26:27 Yes, I already have /dev/dsp, but not /dev/mixer. Jan 01 18:26:27 you'll also need the other module loaded, the one for the usb dongle Jan 01 18:26:51 Not sure what other module you mean? Jan 01 18:30:03 The driver for the cmedia dongle Jan 01 18:31:09 try kernel-module-audio Jan 01 18:33:41 # insmod kernel-module-audio Jan 01 18:33:41 insmod: kernel-module-audio.o: no module by that name found Jan 01 18:34:55 Sorry if I'm clueless. If there's a driver for the cmedia dongle, where would I find that? My desktop linux box just automagically made it work. Jan 01 18:39:34 Did you ipkg install kernel-module-audio ? Jan 01 18:40:00 yes Jan 01 18:41:01 and yes, desktop systems come with all the modules already installed - the distro assumes you have disk space for that. The NSLU2 has 6 MBytes of space, so it's about 10,000 times smaller than the typical desktop disk :-D Jan 01 18:41:24 Did you give insmod the full path to the module: /lib/modules/etc/etc/etc/ Jan 01 18:42:52 No, sorry, that was dumb. Doing an ls -R /lib/modules, I find only two things that look relevant: Jan 01 18:43:31 and /lib/modules/2.4.22-xfs/kernel/drivers/sound/soundcore.o , which I already loaded. Jan 01 18:43:41 Would the audio.o one be the driver for the cmedia dongle? Jan 01 18:45:08 Bwaha!!!! That worked -- got some Brahms playing through my speakers! Jan 01 18:45:16 :) Jan 01 18:45:32 Okay, I'm going to do a few edits on the wiki to try to give other people the benefit of this info. When I'm done I'll Jan 01 18:45:34 Can you update the wiki with the corrected instructions, then? Jan 01 18:45:42 (oops, beat me to it -thanks!!!) Jan 01 18:45:47 post here again and see if anyone notices any big mistakes. Jan 01 18:46:02 BTW, good taste in music for a slug ;) Jan 01 18:46:50 What application are you using to play audio? Jan 01 18:47:16 * Reedy_Boy guesses madplay from earlier Jan 01 18:47:51 yeah, madplay Jan 01 18:50:43 Hmm... we just released Unslung 6.10 a day or two ago; I could have added /dev/mixer to the standard install. Well, it'll be on the wiki now, so that'll be good. Jan 01 18:52:51 mwester, 6.11 ;) Jan 01 18:53:38 hehe! Jan 01 18:54:56 I dont know the main page password for the wiki.. Jan 01 18:54:57 The Unslung 6.8 release of firmware is stable and is a recommended upgrade for all Unslung firmware users. Jan 01 18:55:03 That needs updating ;) Jan 01 18:58:42 * Reedy_Boy cant wait for his USB hub to arrive Jan 01 18:59:11 * Reedy_Boy cant also wait till he gets his soundbridge ordered, and a large external usb hard drive, then he can start making his windows server box redundant :) Jan 01 19:02:01 Reedy_Boy: Yeah, there's lots of wiki updates now. That's the down-side of 5 firmware releases in 5 days. :) Jan 01 19:02:09 heh Jan 01 19:02:10 :) Jan 01 19:02:41 As now is i got one hub with 2 port passive, but I need a 4-port hub. Will it work with passive also? Jan 01 19:03:08 passive being no seperate power supply jannen ? Jan 01 19:03:28 usb hub psu Jan 01 19:03:45 what does u guys get out from your nslu2 in transfer speed when ur using debian on it Jan 01 19:03:56 * Reedy_Boy hasnt benchmarked it Jan 01 19:04:30 but what is it in general? Jan 01 19:04:39 i only get 1mb / sek :S Jan 01 19:05:11 what protocol...? Jan 01 19:05:40 http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/Info/Performance Jan 01 19:05:49 ssh Jan 01 19:05:59 makbe becouse its encrypted Jan 01 19:06:23 and it to poor in performance to get out more Jan 01 19:07:15 Yes, scp is encrypted, and is limited by the NSLU2's CPU. Removing the resistor to boost the CPU up to 266MHz makes a big difference, but it will still be limited by CPU, not disk, network, or USB. Jan 01 19:08:26 whit the resistors whats the cpu speed? Jan 01 19:08:34 cat /proc/cpuinfo Jan 01 19:08:44 if it says ~266 its de-underclocked Jan 01 19:08:52 if its about 133, its underclocked Jan 01 19:10:05 reedy_boy yes no power supply,do I ned it for 4 port hub? Jan 01 19:10:16 jannen, depends what your running off it Jan 01 19:10:26 is it BogoMIPS i should check Reedy_Boy ? Jan 01 19:10:27 if they are self powered (ie they have their own PSU's) it should be ok Jan 01 19:10:40 if they are usb host powered.. you'll probably get problems Jan 01 19:11:13 digii, ya! Jan 01 19:11:18 aah ok Jan 01 19:11:26 it says 266.24 Jan 01 19:11:27 well 2 h.."usual usb-disks" and two usb-stricks Jan 01 19:11:35 so i suppose it clocked Jan 01 19:11:50 not going to go any faster! Jan 01 19:12:18 If there is no external power supply for the 4-port hub, then all power must come from the NSLU2. It can supply 500ma. 100ma goes to the hub itself, which leaves only 100ma for each of the 4 ports. That is enough for a external disk drives that have their own power supply, but not enough for many memory sticks, or cameras, or other USB peripherals. Jan 01 19:12:33 :) Jan 01 19:13:33 ok thanks mwester i better buy a one with powersupply if i change my mind later Jan 01 19:13:47 make sense ;) Jan 01 19:15:26 thats why i bought one with a psu, just in case i do need it Jan 01 19:15:49 I learned today not all usb2 equipment is the same. its difference "high speed" and not. but some sells non high speed usb2 as highspeed=( Jan 01 19:15:52 I agree. I have a hub for my Windows laptop at work that had no external power supply; it has my wireless mouse, a bluetooth dongle, and my connection for syncing my Treo. I found that without an external supply, I would lose the mouse whenever I synced the Treo :D Jan 01 19:16:12 haha :D Jan 01 19:16:42 jannen: Yes, I've seen that as well. They market those hubs to consumers, and assume that the consumer will never know that the hub is at fault. Jan 01 19:17:00 I suppose thats el-cheapo hub vs known brand? Jan 01 19:17:39 Generally that is true. If you stay with reputable vendors who have a brand-name to protect, you get what you think you are buying. Jan 01 19:18:27 * Reedy_Boy needs to kick LaCie up the backside about getting my LaCie orange replaced Jan 01 19:18:44 (Which doesn't stop me from buying low-cost hardware and cables for experimenting, I just know not to use them for important applications.) Jan 01 19:18:55 Yeah, LaCie is a brand I stay away from as far as I can. Jan 01 19:19:36 hmm, its like, ive had the thing over a year.. and they said if you find a problem with it, to return to the place you bought it from... which is a bit weird Jan 01 19:19:46 its important to read reviews before a buy at least if its expensive investment Jan 01 19:19:56 And then like, they'd only do something about it if scandisk/fsck/badblocks reported an error Jan 01 19:20:03 On the other hand, I've had two types of Western Digital USB cases that have performed flawlessly with no overheating, no connector problems, no power supply issues. On of them is on my main Unslung file server: Jan 01 19:20:24 not the fact that it was causing disk management in vista to hang... and the NSLU2 wouldnt format it :/ Jan 01 19:20:28 uptime: 19:20:02 up 437 days, 17:09, 1 user, load average: 1.24, 1.05, 1.02 Jan 01 19:20:40 :) Jan 01 19:20:44 :o Jan 01 19:20:45 Nice Jan 01 19:21:10 (That's unslung 6.8 btw, with two 250GB WD drives, one copied nightly to the other.) Jan 01 19:21:20 heh Jan 01 19:21:20 soon you can look at it as stable mweste :) Jan 01 19:21:49 It was shut down 437 days ago so I could replace the UPS that it was plugged into. It has been a very good little system. Jan 01 19:21:55 heh Jan 01 19:23:23 sounds goood! Its only doing file serving and a perl based business system archive.. Jan 01 19:34:28 just something faster would be better for moving files to multiple people.. and the perl scripts can take a long time to query the db Jan 01 19:36:14 mwester, is there something i can install to get "top" on unslung? ie is it in a package? Jan 01 19:36:18 bcrowell: Thanks for the wiki update :) Jan 01 19:36:24 Reedy_Boy: procps Jan 01 19:37:44 thanks :) Jan 01 19:38:20 I hope it's helpful -- and thanks to you all for your help!! I'm just about to test whether the script in init.d does the right thing when I boot the slug. Jan 01 20:23:15 does pkg wview-vpro have wunderground support compiled in? Jan 01 23:16:41 This can be fixed... file a bug report with the specifics that you need in terms of version and options in the OE bug system @ bugs.openembedded.org, and I'll make the change or add another version to the feeds. Jan 02 02:40:42 Hi -- is anyone around, or have all the Europeans gone to bed? I'm trying to figure out a weird problem with user accounts Jan 02 02:41:10 on my slug, running unslung. The problem is that I can set up a user account, and set the user's password, shell, etc., Jan 02 02:41:44 but all this information is lost as soon as the slug is rebooted. After rebooting, the /etc/passwd file has :x: for the Jan 02 02:41:56 password of the new user, which would normally indicate that shadow passwords are being used, but Jan 02 02:42:45 the /etc/shadow file doesn't exist. Before rebooting, the /etc/passwd file has the correct password hash Jan 02 02:42:51 handling on /etc/passwd file is done by magical closed-source linksys binaries. Jan 02 02:43:10 use the web interface to handle users, or use different firmware (e.g. slugos) Jan 02 02:43:21 in it, and I can log in using the normal password. Jan 02 02:44:08 aha, I see. I guess that solves that problem. Thanks, rwhitby! Jan 02 02:53:34 I added the info about /etc/passwd to http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/FAQ/ForgetsUserPasswords . **** ENDING LOGGING AT Wed Jan 02 02:59:57 2008
