I made one 768 mb swap partition and a 750 mb / partition. The installation had failed with all other combinations I tried. So I got it up and running and configured things the way it was suggested for flash drives (no swapping, noatime etc. according to http://www.cyrius.com/debian/nslu2/linux-on-flash.html). That all seemed to work too. Then I created a new partiti Mar 21 18:04:52 anted to use with Samba. I configured samba and I could then access the drive from my Windows box. However, when I tried to copy a random folder with a lot of files (a ruby on rails project folder), something went wrong and the system crashed. Basically what happens now is that I'm refused access when trying to ssh to my nslu2 and being the linux newbie that I am, I don't know why. Googled around and tried to look through the faq, Mar 21 18:04:58 problem :) Mar 21 18:06:36 Does upslug2 work over an fast ethernet switch or do i need an crossover cable to upload an 8MB openwrt image? Mar 21 18:07:42 Im asking becuase of the docs:... "UpSlug2 requires a direct connection to the NSLU2 in the same Ethernet segment." ... Mar 21 18:08:25 Sefram_: i used upslug2 over ethernet switch fine Mar 21 18:08:55 Sefram_: it's because basically upslug2 need nslu2's MAC Address Mar 21 18:10:01 jbh: "the system crashed" is too vague, did you need to restart it? can you ping it? Mar 21 18:13:30 eno: I'm sorry... yes, I rebooted it because it stopped responding to commands. I managed to ssh to it afterwards, but when I tried to copy files again, it completely died on me. I've tried to look through the /var/log/boot file to see what happens (I've got a VMWare ubuntu install on my Windows box) and it seems that a segmentation fault is reported when Samba and Winbind are started. Mar 21 18:18:31 eno: and yes, I'm able to ping the nslu2 :) Mar 21 18:19:03 well i dunno too much about samba and winbindd Mar 21 18:19:54 hehe...neither do I :D Mar 21 18:20:11 i'd suggest you also ask in #debian-arm channel on irc.oftc.net Mar 21 18:20:32 oh..oki, I'll try that :) Thanks for you help :) Mar 21 18:21:09 you can also try disable winbindd to see which part was causing the problem Mar 21 18:24:21 eno: I tried to disable both samba and winbindd (both reported segmentation fault) but then it got hung when starting up cron.... Mar 21 19:35:38 http://luna-heights.myminicity.com/ Mar 21 19:39:08 ping phome.ath.cx Mar 21 19:39:12 woops Mar 21 19:39:15 wrong window Mar 21 22:28:26 Hello everyone. Anyone with Debian/NSLU2 expierence? I got a problem to which I couldn't find a working solution. Maybe you can give me a clou Mar 21 22:29:46 CodeSiebenR, easiest way is to post your question, and someone will help if they can :) Mar 21 22:32:39 Oh. Ok. Thanks. I guess I'll just do that then. ;-) Mar 21 22:38:54 I have installed Debian on my NSLU successfully. It's running on a 8gb USB stick and doing just fine. A few days ago, I bought another one for my father. He wants to use his 400gb usb harddrive for it. So I installed it exactly the same way as I did with mine. The installer seemed to work just fine right until the end. But after the reboot, I just can't find it on my network. The status LED is yellow, Ethernet is green. The Mar 21 22:50:01 was your ip static? Mar 21 22:50:14 you ip was static? Mar 21 22:54:25 Yes. Worked fine during install. I just hooked the drive up to my NSLU. Ip setting is correct. "auto" is used instead of "allow-hotplug" Mar 21 22:56:17 It still doesn't work. It's definatly doing something on the hd during boot. But then it stops, the hd-led it still lighting up every 5 seconds or so... doesn't seem to do anything now Mar 21 22:57:00 yes, you see a double flash? Mar 21 22:59:18 No... single flash, every 5 seconds. What would a double flash mean? Mar 21 22:59:59 its working Mar 21 23:00:05 (mine does that when booted) Mar 21 23:00:53 yes. Frequency of double flash should show the cpu load. But in your cas, i don't know what's wrong Mar 21 23:01:33 easiest thing to do, is use upslug2, put it back on the stock firmware and check you can access t Mar 21 23:01:37 then take it from there Mar 21 23:02:41 Check if I can access what? (text was cut of after "access t") Mar 21 23:03:05 it Mar 21 23:03:13 see if you can get a web interface and such Mar 21 23:04:19 Well, I was able to access it before, and the installer worked fine. So I guess it does work in some unpreferable way... ;-) Mar 21 23:05:15 The drive seems to work fine too since my own nslu can mount it. Mar 21 23:05:48 It's the first boot after formatting, so it can't be the fsck Mar 21 23:06:18 It can't be the hd-size of 400gb can it? Mar 21 23:09:16 Are you sure it was static? Mar 21 23:09:25 As that is often the problem, its not on the IP expected Mar 21 23:09:48 But, then yours doesnt actually seem to be booting Mar 21 23:09:57 but if its not serialised, theres not a lot that can be done to debug it Mar 21 23:11:05 Is there some way I can get it to do boot logging onto the hd, so I can mount it with my nslu to see what is wrong? Mar 21 23:11:38 Yes the IP was definatly static. Checked it Mar 21 23:13:39 You will get some logging done, but not sufficient Mar 21 23:15:07 Another crazy theory of mine is that maybe the power supply is the problem. I read that the nslu sucks up 20 watts max. The noticed that the delivered power supply can only do 10 watts, and looks different to my own nslus power supply. Mar 21 23:15:17 Long shot, I know. Mar 21 23:17:29 Well, I guess I'll have to try using a usb stick again. Cause using a external hd is the most prominent difference to my working config. Maybe somethings wrong with the hd. Mar 21 23:18:08 Have you got no power cable attached to the drive? Mar 21 23:18:51 Yes I do. ;-) I was talking about the nslus power cable. Mar 21 23:19:27 Not powering the drive would be... ... well, a simpler problem. ;-) Mar 21 23:21:29 how did you try to find the slug on your LAN? Mar 21 23:21:55 Ping? SSH... arp, brctl, whatever I could think of Mar 21 23:22:42 ping the broadcast address? Mar 21 23:23:40 I only get replies from my router. Mar 21 23:23:51 look in your dhcpd client list, just in case? Mar 21 23:24:34 My own nslu hands out dhcp, nothing in leases nor logs Mar 21 23:24:43 since you can mount the HD, maybe you can look at /etc/network/interfaces Mar 21 23:24:43 :-( Mar 21 23:24:54 /var/log/messages Mar 21 23:25:16 Did that. It uses auto, not allow-hotplug if that's what you mean Mar 21 23:25:24 what does it mean, when the nslu triple beep every 30 seconds? Mar 21 23:26:31 I'll look in messages again... just a sec Mar 21 23:26:40 mine uses "allow-hotplug eth0", "iface eth0 inet static" Mar 21 23:27:21 yeah, that's what mine used by default first too, but I read that using allow-hotplug may cause my problem. Mar 21 23:27:48 If I only knew where it hangs... Mar 21 23:27:57 That thing really needs monitor and keyboard ports. ;-) Mar 21 23:29:11 debian is the only slug firmware that require an HD to boot Mar 21 23:30:59 bootloader support of netconsole would be nice Mar 21 23:31:46 eno, by HD, do you include usbkey? Mar 21 23:31:55 yes Mar 21 23:32:34 var/log/messages doesn't even exist yet Mar 21 23:32:54 so it doesn't even start logging **** ENDING LOGGING AT Sat Mar 22 02:59:56 2008
