**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Sat Sep 20 02:59:57 2008 Sep 20 13:20:11 hello everyone Sep 20 13:21:23 is there anything special I have to do when reinstalling Debian on my slug? I flashed the lenny installer image, but the machine won't reboot. seems like the bootloader hangs at some point. Sep 20 13:22:14 I think that's because I tweaked the bootloader to use a partition labeled "stickroot" as root file system. Is this setting preserved when flashing? Sep 20 13:23:17 And in the end, what would you do to get a "fresh start" when trying to install Debian? Should I try to install the original firmware first? Sep 20 13:41:15 ahhh, after resetting the settings and flashing the original fiirmware, the machine boots.. http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/ResetSysConf Sep 20 14:15:19 hmm.. debian won't still boot.. darn! Sep 20 14:22:12 should i try eraseall.exe Sep 20 14:22:20 No! Never! Sep 20 14:22:31 :) that's what i expected :) Sep 20 14:22:41 guess you highlighted that word :) Sep 20 14:22:51 but how xould i reset my bootloader then? Sep 20 14:23:35 There's nothing in the bootloader to reset Sep 20 14:24:12 well.. i think my problem is that the bootloader expects the root drive to be LABEL="rootstick".. but when flashing the debian installer, that's not the case.. Sep 20 14:24:48 I flash the debian installer and when the slug reboots its stuck with the orange status led and mainly static green network led Sep 20 14:25:09 with the original firmware the slug will boot.. so maybe my assumption is wrong Sep 20 14:28:17 what I've done is changing the kernel command line as described here: http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/Debian/ChangeKernelCommandLine Sep 20 14:28:41 and i guess this setting is preventing debian installer from booting.. so i have locked myswlef out of the slug it seems Sep 20 14:30:54 hmm, wait.. that's nonsense! the debian installer will have its own boot config for the kernel.. but why isn't it booting?! Sep 20 14:35:11 p512o: Reflashing the debian firmware, and erasing sysconf, will remove any possible place that debian can tuck away that commandline -- the *real* commandline used by the built-in bootloader (redboot) is hard-coded and cannot be changed. Sep 20 14:36:09 As for why it's not booting, well, that's my pet peeve with Debian -- you'll never know without a serial port, and because it can't boot without an external disk, you have no simple recovery mode. If you wait here, perhaps a Debian expert will be along, and able to help :( Sep 20 14:37:07 okay, thanks mwester! I'll try another debian installer (etch) and maybe unskung too Sep 20 14:37:11 unslung Sep 20 14:39:03 * mwester suggests that SlugOS would be a better alternative than Unslung, for someone who is comfortable with Debian. Sep 20 14:39:17 okay.. never tried that one Sep 20 17:37:44 bye everyone Sep 20 17:45:18 I just switched from debian to SlugOS (hard drive died and I switched to a very small spare flash). Anyway, I had the impression that mtr was an available package but can't find it. Am I mistaken? Sep 20 18:29:23 hello evrybody Sep 20 18:30:05 I just got my hands on an NSLU2 and I am not right sure which firmware suits me best... Sep 20 18:30:43 Hardware is not the problem (got the NSLU2 an external HDD 320GB an an extra 8GB Pendrive) Sep 20 18:32:36 hich Firmware should I use if I want services like (samba, ftp, ssh, mldonkey/amule/ro-any-other-torrent-client and perhaps cups) Sep 20 18:33:05 hey Sep 20 18:33:20 depends on if you are familiar with the linux commands Sep 20 18:33:21 if so Sep 20 18:33:26 I suggest SlugOS/BE Sep 20 18:33:27 if not Sep 20 18:33:31 then Unslung Sep 20 18:34:15 I got couple of years experience with a bunch of distros atm i'am using debian Sep 20 18:34:30 well, SlugOS/LE is debian Sep 20 18:34:58 http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/SlugOS/SlugOSLE Sep 20 18:35:06 I was thinking about NSLU2/Debian but I would prefer a firmware where I don't need an external drive all the time... Sep 20 18:35:50 openwrt is for those who don't want to use a hd Sep 20 18:36:37 all the others require the hd to be connected all the time Sep 20 18:36:39 afaik most of the nslu2-linux packages are crosscompiled and I should use armel binaries for the best performance... Sep 20 18:37:12 is any of the nslu2 "distros" better at performance? Sep 20 18:37:27 SlugOS/BE Sep 20 18:38:12 but the last firmware ther is from 2007 that project has been abandoned? Sep 20 18:38:24 no Sep 20 18:39:07 in fact, slugos 5.0 was just announced a few weeks ago as being developed Sep 20 18:40:11 http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/nslu2-linux/message/22188 Sep 20 18:48:01 levarnu: You may have to add the optware feeds to SlugOS -- see the wiki for the necessary steps to be able to run optware on SlugOS. Sep 20 21:38:20 Thanks mwester. I thought I had seen something along those lines but hadn't tracked it back down again Sep 20 21:39:34 feed=http://ipkg.nslu2-linux.org/feeds/optware/slugosbe/cross/unstable Sep 20 21:39:43 found it :) Sep 20 23:09:24 hi, I need some help seting up cups Sep 20 23:09:41 the guide says Edit /opt/etc/cups/cupsd.conf for your network and environment. Sep 20 23:09:51 Pay particular attention to the allow/deny access privileges near the bottom of the file (by default only 192.168.0.x clients are granted access). Sep 20 23:10:42 and I need it to work on the 192.168.1.x Sep 20 23:15:55 when i go on slug.ip.ad.dy:631 it says 401 Sep 20 23:16:05 :P sorry 403 Sep 20 23:18:10 ok never mind, i got it Sep 20 23:40:44 ok I need help adding a printer Sep 20 23:40:56 I have a Epson rx580 Sep 21 01:22:18 can some one help me with cups? Sep 21 01:42:27 anyone one? Sep 21 01:48:39 why does it take so long for the slug to boot? Sep 21 01:58:49 never mind that too, All i had to do was scandisk Sep 21 02:25:00 so how about some help with cups? **** ENDING LOGGING AT Sun Sep 21 02:59:57 2008
