**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Fri Sep 26 02:59:56 2008 Sep 26 11:08:37 hi all Sep 26 11:09:03 does anyone know a way to improve network speed? Sep 26 11:09:28 i'm talking purely about network speed, not about samba/ftp whatever Sep 26 11:09:42 would an usb ethernet adapter make difference? Sep 26 11:10:20 more than likely not Sep 26 11:10:59 the speed depends on where its being read from Sep 26 11:11:09 netio for example Sep 26 11:11:18 afaik that doesn't read anything from disk Sep 26 11:14:43 example output: Packet size 16k bytes: 1956 KByte/s Tx, 2492 KByte/s Rx. Sep 26 11:14:47 (wireless connection) Sep 26 14:03:22 hello? Sep 26 14:07:41 goodbye then :( Sep 26 14:17:39 a beatles fan Sep 26 17:00:07 hello? Sep 26 22:00:37 quick q: I'm a little confused by the "which USB port" unslung wiki page. I'm going to be using two natively formatted devices, but planned to have one of them connected via USB hub (on port 1) to allow for future flexibility. The instructions seem ambiguous -- right now I think this means I should unsling to disk 2, but thought I'd ask before proceeding. Sep 26 22:01:30 in particular there's a vague implication that a root device can be found through a port 1 USB hub if no other devices are connected to the hub. Is that true? Should I be worried about it? Sep 26 22:05:01 sbma44: You should be worried. Sep 26 22:05:13 What else would you have on the hub? Sep 26 22:06:15 I have no definite plans but can imagine wanting to add a video capture device or maybe a usb bit whacker somewhere down the line Sep 26 22:06:28 but this is a vague notion and if it's asking for trouble I can just forego the idea of the hub altogether Sep 26 22:11:18 Well, as long as you follow the rules in that wiki article, you'll be ok -- just don't ever break them, is all! Sep 26 22:12:27 Your hub MUST go on port 1, the rule is that if you have two native drives you MUST unsling to the one in port 1, and reading the rules that constrains you to having only a single mass storage device of any sort on the hub in port 1. Sep 26 22:12:47 So it will work, just don't ever even plug in a USB memory stick in the hub; it may get very confused. Sep 26 22:14:13 Ok, that makes sense. It's very good to get this straight now -- I might've foolishly played around with a usb memory stick otherwise. Thanks for the help! Sep 26 22:14:55 hmm... although now that I'm actually trying to format, the device seems to not recognize my efforts to format drive 2 no matter how many times I tell it to via the GUI Sep 26 22:15:03 might be time to ditch the USB hub, just to simplify things **** ENDING LOGGING AT Sat Sep 27 02:59:57 2008
