**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Wed Oct 01 02:59:59 2008 Oct 01 03:36:19 i have been out of the nslu2 loop for awhile... still running unslung 6.8... what is the general feeling on what the current standard should be for a nslu2 to be running? Oct 01 03:37:17 anyone care to discuss? Oct 01 03:37:53 current standard? Oct 01 03:38:27 well i was planning on cleaning out what i had stored on my nslu2 and thought it might be a good idea to redo it Oct 01 03:38:37 with what goal Oct 01 03:38:53 so i figured i would upgrade to unslung 6.10 - eventhough i see that there isnt any big benefit Oct 01 03:39:01 but - maybe there is something better to use instead? Oct 01 03:39:45 sorry Oct 01 03:39:58 slugos or openwrt maybe? Oct 01 03:40:04 i know very little about either Oct 01 03:40:37 or maybe debian? Oct 01 03:40:44 Yeah, go for a full Debian install :) Oct 01 03:40:48 Can't go wrong Oct 01 03:41:04 but with that, wont i lose the web interface? Oct 01 03:41:22 i mean im not very advanced with linux but im not quite a beginner either Oct 01 03:41:47 it depends on what you intend to do with it Oct 01 03:42:16 its basically going to be a backup storage area but it might run a few packages Oct 01 03:42:17 if there is no reason to install debian or some other firmware you're better off unslung Oct 01 03:42:36 i dont think i would be doing any development with it Oct 01 03:42:41 maybe an itunes server Oct 01 03:43:01 and just need ssh to it and a few other random packages but nothing too intense Oct 01 03:43:57 it seems like development has continued with the other projects a lot more than unslung so i didnt know if there was any benefit to me moving to one of those Oct 01 03:44:38 Debian is going to give you a much more complete package, but with the obvious increase in complexity Oct 01 03:44:43 It's a create learning tool though Oct 01 03:44:53 does debian, slugos or openwrt still use the linksys web page (or something similar) to easily make configuration changes to drives and permissions? Oct 01 03:45:45 Debian definitely does not (although you could install Webmin or something similar) Oct 01 03:48:19 ok - so for the time being, since the data that will be on this drive is pretty important, i think i need to stick with the little kiddie version (unslung 6.10) Oct 01 03:48:29 :-) Oct 01 03:48:39 well imo it's just the opposite Oct 01 03:48:50 install debian to play and unslung to work Oct 01 03:49:05 DogBoy: I'd say Debian to work, rest, and play Oct 01 03:49:15 depends on what you want to do Oct 01 03:49:21 True, true Oct 01 03:49:40 which you have not touched on Oct 01 03:49:49 for a linux novice that just needs a reliable backup what do you suggest then? Oct 01 03:49:54 I must admit, about the only thing my slug doesn't do is act as file storage :) Oct 01 03:50:03 I have debian running on this cobalt qube here next to me Oct 01 03:50:06 and my desktop Oct 01 03:50:13 but the slug is unslung Oct 01 03:50:24 Cobalt Cube? Awesome, those things look too cool Oct 01 03:50:34 Wanna give it to me? :D Oct 01 03:50:42 I have three of them Oct 01 03:50:43 dogboy: right my slug is unslung but that brings me to my last point... Oct 01 03:50:54 DogBoy: In which case, yo ucan spare one... Oct 01 03:51:03 :P Oct 01 03:51:18 I'm thinking of making car computers out of them Oct 01 03:51:25 i would like the OS to run on a USB stick (i guess it needs to be plugged into USB port 2) and the actual backup drive plugged into port 1 Oct 01 03:52:55 Interesting idea indeed Oct 01 03:53:13 I wonder how long it would last Oct 01 03:53:49 installing debian (correctly) is a fairly convoluted process on a qube Oct 01 03:53:50 so i wanted to redo the nslu2 to boot from the usb stick - maybe its a silly question but do you see any problems with that? Oct 01 03:58:07 DogBoy: What OS do they usually run? Oct 01 03:58:13 nunzio19: No Oct 01 03:58:21 modified red hat Oct 01 03:58:47 thanks guys for your help Oct 01 04:06:34 Still Linux then, cool Oct 01 11:04:48 Hello Oct 01 11:06:07 I try to install slugOS on my nslu2, but the default root password isn't working. I tryed opeNSLUg and OpenSlug, but each are failing. Oct 01 11:17:33 I'm using the firmware 4.8 Oct 01 14:09:16 Try the original root password it had Oct 01 14:16:43 My old one? Oct 01 14:16:51 yes Oct 01 14:16:53 Ok Oct 01 14:19:19 Oh, it works! Oct 01 14:19:54 I'm really surprised Oct 01 14:20:16 Thank you Oct 01 14:42:26 np Oct 01 14:42:33 Glad you got it working! Oct 01 14:43:16 I suspect you did a "turnup preserve" in the past, so it tucks away your root password, and the important settings so that it can restore those after you flash a new firmware image. Oct 01 14:45:49 Haha, it is probably that Oct 01 14:46:45 I have SlugOS before debian, but i didn't used my nas for a while, so i forgot Oct 01 14:50:00 Yeah, I wish there was a way to signal the user that the old settings were restored, as this can be very confusing if one has forgotten. Oct 01 14:59:31 Maybe i can add dad Oct 01 18:42:20 Sorry, i have been disconnected from ssh Oct 01 18:42:33 I don't remember what i was saying Oct 01 19:03:23 hello! i need some help Oct 01 19:03:48 ask away Oct 01 19:03:59 oh hello again Oct 01 19:04:38 right so i have installed apache2 but its not loading php Oct 01 19:04:55 supajason, presumably youve put it in the config Oct 01 20:20:39 Hummm Oct 01 20:20:57 I try ti launch irssi, but i have an error: Oct 01 20:20:58 irssi: symbol lookup error: irssi: undefined symbol: PL_stack_sp Oct 01 20:21:11 perl and libperl5 are installed Oct 01 20:23:15 I will try eith a new irssi config file Oct 01 20:28:42 hi there Oct 01 20:28:47 Hello Oct 01 20:28:51 simple question Oct 01 20:29:13 how an i compile a dhcrelay for nslu Oct 01 20:29:14 ? Oct 01 20:30:26 With ./configure; make; make install? Oct 01 20:30:43 too easy... doesn't work Oct 01 20:30:56 I am on a freecom data tank Oct 01 20:31:32 using the cs05q3armel/ packages Oct 01 20:31:44 made an ipkg update Oct 01 20:31:59 and ipkg install opware-devel Oct 01 20:32:22 got my sources but it didn't compile nothing Oct 01 20:32:29 gcc was missing Oct 01 20:32:35 installed it as well Oct 01 20:32:44 and tried once more Oct 01 20:32:49 Hum, what firmware do you use? Oct 01 20:32:59 got a binary file but it doesn't work Oct 01 20:33:05 Notice: I have found the answer of my problem with irssi Oct 01 20:33:06 the original Oct 01 20:33:17 Original freecom one? Oct 01 20:33:23 openfsg freecom stuff Oct 01 20:33:27 yep Oct 01 20:33:54 Hum, i don't know, i just know about nslu2 projects Oct 01 20:34:06 unslung/slugos Oct 01 20:34:20 basically it is the the same Oct 01 20:34:46 and the feed points to the packages on lslu2 site Oct 01 20:35:13 how can i cross compile on a linux box? Oct 01 20:35:49 where can i find a source for a already compiled packages for nslu2? Oct 01 20:43:36 http://ipkgfind.handhelds.org Oct 01 20:43:48 That's where you can find some packages Oct 01 20:44:28 About cross compilation, i don't really know Oct 01 20:47:33 hmmm ok Oct 01 20:47:36 thx Oct 01 20:57:46 Sorry :s Oct 02 00:54:12 I' Oct 02 00:54:41 I'm hoping to get spindown working on an unslung box using nexstar3 PATA/USB enclosures Oct 02 00:56:34 so far, though, I'm not having a lot of luck. sg_start complains about "os passthrough errors". The spindown daemon doesn't seem to do anything. scsi-stop stops the drive momentarily, but it spins back up immediately. Oct 02 00:56:55 I'm wondering if I might have installed an ipkg that won't leave the drive alone. I've got mt-daapd running, and also mysql, but neither are being asked to do anything. Oct 02 01:01:23 any advice is much appreciated **** ENDING LOGGING AT Thu Oct 02 02:59:57 2008
