**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Sun Jan 25 02:59:58 2009 Jan 25 05:56:41 mwester-laptop: i'm trying to build a SlugOS 4.8 cross-compile environment so I can build my custom bb files for SlugOS 4.8, but it's not working Jan 25 10:04:33 hello , a question: can we use proftpd on unslung through a web ui? Jan 25 10:05:09 or is it just available only in edtiting conf files? Jan 25 16:02:53 scant: my Psychic powers seem to have failed; I cannot diagnose your problem with the information provided! Jan 25 16:03:10 RaZorbacK: No web gui for proftpd Jan 25 18:15:55 mwester-laptop: do you have any immediate plans to move SlugOS 5.2-alpha to Linux kernel 2.6.28? Jan 25 18:16:37 scant: nope; still trying to stabilize what we have, which is proving more difficult than expected due to the number of disruptive OE changes that have been happening lately! Jan 25 18:16:58 No compelling reason to move to 2.6.28 as far as I know. Jan 25 18:18:06 mwester-laptop: i'm also still trying to fix my audio issue, I posted the issue to the mailing list last night, but i doubt anyone will provide any solutions Jan 25 18:18:25 mwester-laptop: so i want to go back to SlugOS 4.8, but it's not working Jan 25 18:18:35 Right. You mentioned that. Jan 25 18:18:57 But my telepathic powers cannot reach from California to where your computer is. Jan 25 18:19:01 mwester-laptop: i feel like it's wrong to revert back to 4.8, but i don't know what to do Jan 25 18:20:13 Nothing wrong with going back if something doesn't work. But according to your email, you're not certain that it will work on 4.8 either. So best to at least give it a try. Jan 25 18:21:02 mwester-laptop: a few days ago, I made a new cross-compile env just for 4.8 Jan 25 18:22:02 mwester-laptop: i got the Mastermakefile, and ran make slugosbe-4.8-beta, and lots of targets failed, but at the very end, it says 'echo "slugosbe-4.8-beta completed" Jan 25 18:22:02 slugosbe-4.8-beta completed' Jan 25 18:22:18 pastebin.ca is down Jan 25 18:23:22 the first failure is: NOTE: Running task 99 of 4405 (ID: 3451, /slug48/releases/slugos-4.8-beta/openembedded/packages/gmp/gmp-native_4.2.1.bb, do_compile) Jan 25 18:23:22 NOTE: package gmp-native-4.2.1: started Jan 25 18:23:22 NOTE: package gmp-native-4.2.1-r2: task do_compile: started Jan 25 18:23:22 ERROR: function do_compile failed Jan 25 18:34:17 scant: that's a host-sensitive issue. The problem is the classic bootstrapping problem; in order to build your cross compilers you need to have a native compiler first. And in this case, the newer compilers/libraries do not like to sources provided by OE (backwards compat. is not guaranteed by most parts of Linux). Jan 25 18:35:33 So you would do better by installing a host distro that is a bit older as well. Failing that, you would have to pick-and-choose patches or fixes from OE to "pull forward" that part of the toolchain sources and recipes so that it can build under your more-recent host distro. Jan 25 18:36:30 And, of course, the operative part of the log is not what you posted; it's in the log file that is called out a few lines earlier than that ERROR line. (I just happen to have seen that before, so I think I can safely guess at the problem). Jan 25 18:36:33 mwester-laptop: ok Jan 25 18:37:00 this host built images before the EABI change Jan 25 18:37:06 Continuing to guess, you might try installing the fortran compiler and libs on the host. And yes, I know that sounds ridiculous. Jan 25 18:37:14 scant: Of course. Jan 25 18:37:23 See my earlier comment about "pulling forward". Jan 25 18:37:30 once pastebin comes back, i can paste the logs and stuff Jan 25 18:37:56 I'm not all that interested in fixing SlugOS 4.8 to make it build on new distros anymore, to be quite honest. Jan 25 18:41:49 ok, thanks Jan 25 18:52:22 hello, if is there here an unslung guru or a linkysys web ui user, I can't figure out how to make my shares. are there a tutorial around to explain me how it works? Please? Jan 25 18:52:49 I really wat to share what I want to, not hard disks roots! Jan 25 18:53:12 through ftp Jan 25 18:55:57 Tutorials are on the wiki. Also note that if you are using tools like proftpd, this is standard software so information you find on the web will be generally pertinent. Unslung has some constraints due to Linksys firmware, but usually that only involves the location of the config files and the startup files. Jan 25 18:56:51 Also, if you are trying to access your device using network shares, you do not do that via ftp -- that is done via Samba on Unslung or other Linux systems. Jan 25 18:57:00 mwester-laptop: : for the moment, i'm still trying to figure out how shares work in the linksys web ui Jan 25 18:57:12 (ftpd uses the "ftp" utility on the client (windows or other) side. Jan 25 18:57:14 ) Jan 25 18:57:45 Shares in the linksys web UI work the way Linksys defines them, using the Linksys samba software. Jan 25 18:58:05 So refer to Linksys docs for info on how that works, and how to create user-specific shares. Jan 25 18:58:15 (and no, you cannot change the HD_1_1_1 shares) Jan 25 18:59:25 but generally speaking, if i understand you well, the configuration could be more easy using the fonf files rather than the we b ui ? Jan 25 18:59:39 the linksys doc is not really acccurate about that Jan 25 19:00:01 Well, if you invested enough effort, you probably could -- it's software after all. It's just that doing that is like building a yacht by starting with a rubber inflatable dinghy -- you're much better off starting with a real Linux system (SlugOS, Debian) to do that sort of customization. Jan 25 19:00:14 RaZorbacK: no - not on Unslung. Jan 25 19:00:56 RaZorbacK: To deviate from the One True Linksys Way requires much contortion. Think of Unslung as *expanding* the linksys firmware, not *replacing* it. Jan 25 19:02:02 ho damn :( Jan 25 19:02:30 I didn't think it was so complicated to do an ftp server :-) Jan 25 19:02:33 Perhaps it would be better if you would describe what it is you wish to do with the NSLU2, and someone here might be able to suggest a solution. Jan 25 19:02:47 FTP has nothing whatever to do with shares. Jan 25 19:03:06 And btw, there is an ftp server built into the linksys firmware... Jan 25 19:03:58 yes but want to arrange the directoires presented to the client the way I want and the linslys web ui seems not to allow me all I want to do (virtual dirs, aliases etc ). Jan 25 19:04:16 whoops my typo sory Jan 25 19:04:46 so help me out. FTP or shares? Jan 25 19:04:57 I'm ready to make efforts to understand the linux world but I'll have figure out how i works first Jan 25 19:05:15 I thouhgt it was the same Jan 25 19:05:33 first I want to share my files with friends and wanted to do that via ftp Jan 25 19:05:55 for the moment, i've just unslunged my box for open ssh Jan 25 19:06:36 brb Jan 25 19:24:26 so mwester-laptop to sum up all that stuff a bit, if I want ot share my files via ftp for my friends, the samba way of working is not adapted to ftp? I better use a more standard ftp server like ProFtpd or PureFtpd? Jan 25 19:25:51 Samba makes data available as a shared drive to Windows systems. FTP is a means to transfer files between computers of any sort using a client application (web browser or similar tool, but NOT a shared disk). Jan 25 19:25:57 as concerning me, I can work with the samba stuff on my network. I don't care files are displayed, I'm the only user of my network. The ting I want to do is rearrange the directories structure the way I like for my ftp users, taht, if I understand you correctly, is not possible with the samba thing. Jan 25 19:26:55 You should probably start by learning a bit more about network shares, samba, ftp, and such -- there are a lot of compromises, and some security issues that get involved. Samba is in NO way related to FTP. Jan 25 19:27:22 ok Jan 25 19:27:51 Ok. I really know very well ftp but only from the windows side Jan 25 19:28:15 Do you know what a shared drive is on windows, then? Jan 25 19:28:22 and for newbie like me in linux, what ftp server do you advise, pure ftpd or pro ftpd? Jan 25 19:28:39 RaZorbacK: I would suggest that you stick with the one built into the Linksys firmware. Jan 25 19:29:11 yes, i know what a shared disk is under windows but I have to say that I never really used that before since all my hard dissk were locally connected Jan 25 19:30:06 yes, but with the built-iln ftp, could i customise my directores structure without displaying the root of my hard disks? Jan 25 19:30:30 htat's here, my biggest problem Jan 25 19:31:24 I'm used to ftp servers undr windows like filezilla ftp server and I could, with this ftp server redirect the folders where I want using aliases virtual directories Jan 25 19:31:35 sory if my explanations are not really clear Jan 25 19:31:41 The built-in ftp is called "bftp" or "bftpd" -- you can google for the documents on it. It has a single configuration file on disk; you can edit that file to make it do many things that Linksys doesn't do from teh GUI, as long as you know that if you touch the configuration of the ftp server from the GUI it will overwrite your customizations. Jan 25 19:32:07 RaZorbacK: you are describing web servers more than you describe ftp. Jan 25 19:32:09 ok! that's what I wanted to hear ! Jan 25 19:32:38 you'll have to read the bftpd documents and see what would be the similar construct used in that configuration file. Jan 25 19:32:42 mwester-laptop: : maybe because my english is not so good :-) Jan 25 19:33:09 No, I think it's because anything that Mozilla touches becomes "mozilla-ized" Jan 25 19:33:29 lol Jan 25 19:34:52 it's rally a new adventure for me getting inro all those conf files :-) Jan 25 19:35:15 I hope all of you would patient enough to answer my newbie questions Jan 25 19:35:46 mwester-laptop: how do I upgrade bitbake? i can't build anything because I'm getting, "Bitbake version 1.8.12 is required and version 1.8.10 was found" Jan 25 19:35:57 edit the Makefile. Jan 25 19:36:11 and change the 1.8.10 to 1.8.12 ;) Jan 25 19:36:46 oh Jan 25 19:37:09 Yeah, I know -- it's too easy! rwhitby did a nice job with that. Jan 25 19:37:59 Somebody has to go change the master copy so that an updated Makefile is available... I'm just not at a computer with the right SSH keys. Jan 25 19:38:28 mwester-laptop: : could this bftpd be udated to the latest version or does it need ot be comiled for unslung to do that ? Jan 25 19:38:39 compiled Jan 25 19:40:02 mwester-laptop: i want to try upgrading ALSA, but I'm having trouble finding the bb file for kernel-module-snd-usb-audio Jan 25 19:40:47 Linksys added bftpd very late, so it is not very tightly tied into the rest of the Linksys firmware -- that makes it possible to upgrade it, if you are careful. But not many people have done that, or at least not many have mentioned that they have done it. It should work though. Jan 25 19:41:05 scant: perhaps it's a different module on such an old kernel. Jan 25 19:41:24 mwester-laptop: huh? Jan 25 19:42:27 There is no bb file for a kernel module; they are built along with the kernel itself. If you can't find the module, pehaps it has a different name on the kernel you are working with (2.6.21 or so?) Jan 25 19:43:31 because i can't get SlugOS 4.8 to build, I've given up on Linux kernel 2.6.21.7 Jan 25 19:44:32 but I'm confused how to upgrade the ALSA kernel module from 1.0.17 to 1.0.19 for SlugOS 5.2-alpha Jan 25 19:45:42 A kernel module is part of the kernel, and cannot be upgraded without upgrading the kernel itself. Unless the kernel module is built externally, like the madwifi drivers for example. Jan 25 19:46:21 oh, k, thanks Jan 25 19:47:24 maybe it's the ALSA mixer that's creating /proc/asound then Jan 25 20:23:58 mwester-laptop: should I be asking for audio help in nslu2-general? or nslu2-linux? Jan 25 20:25:02 mwester-laptop: i mean which mailing-list, someone replied and said i should be using nslu2-linux rather nslu2-general, should I delete my post in nslu2-general and report in nslu2-linux? Jan 25 20:28:07 probably dont delete it, just repost it (saying you were told to post there) Jan 25 20:29:21 thks Jan 25 20:35:08 I guess I don't understand the difference between the 2 groups and channels Jan 25 20:43:14 I'm french and my french and filenames with accented letters do not display correctly. Is there a way to fix this? Jan 25 20:43:46 I'm running unslung Jan 25 21:05:25 scant read here what diffs thoose 2 groups http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/nslu2-general/ -->description Jan 25 21:07:03 but I agree its a mess=) **** ENDING LOGGING AT Mon Jan 26 02:59:57 2009
