**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Wed Dec 30 02:59:57 2009 Dec 30 14:15:55 hello Dec 30 14:16:11 is there a unslung version which has gcc v4 instead of v3? Dec 30 14:37:46 Hello guys. I'm in sort of a desperate mode here... I've flashed my nslu2 with latest debian (modified version, including support for ethernet card) through the web interface, and it went ok. But after I could not connect to the installer via ssh. Perhaps the slug got an ip via dhcp. Anyway, I resetted the slug several times and have tried to connect to it to no avail. I can see now on my router that the slug requests an ip, but Dec 30 14:37:55 then let's it go and i can not connect to it. The router then tells me it has no leased ip addresses anymore. The slug is not in ready mode, the LED is yellow. Dec 30 14:38:01 I don't know what to do. I have tried to reset it, but it still behaves the same way. Dec 30 14:38:09 so now status led is yellow/orange, and all other leds below are green for some reason, even though i only have one usb stick connected. Dec 30 14:38:14 any ideas on how to connect to it or reflash it? Dec 30 14:38:56 you can reflash it with redboot... Dec 30 14:39:02 wait, searching the link Dec 30 14:39:04 i even do a arp -a when i'm on 192.168.1.0 network, and i get no hit except my own interface :( Dec 30 14:39:51 but still it brefly requests an ip from my router, but then goes silent. Dec 30 14:42:09 you will need that all router upgrade utility Dec 30 14:44:11 that redboot page says i must enter upgrade mode Dec 30 14:45:01 http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/UseTheResetButtonToEnterUpgradeMode Dec 30 14:45:02 the problem is i no longer seem to be able to do it, by pressing reset button for 10 secs while i boot up... it just seems to boot like normal anyway. maybe i'm not doing it right, but it worked just fine before. Dec 30 14:45:10 yeah, exactly that page Dec 30 14:45:20 for me it worked several times Dec 30 14:45:43 but i cant find that link to the tool, which can reflash the NSLU2 while in upgrade mode Dec 30 14:46:15 you mean the redboot thingy? when you login via telnet? Dec 30 14:47:08 nope Dec 30 14:47:16 ok think it's in upgrade mode now actually, it's flashing orange now. but it changed from orange to yellow... i have one of those new slugs where's it's not easy to see the change in color, but anyway. Dec 30 14:47:28 another one which detects the nslu on MAC-address level Dec 30 14:48:10 just found it on my pc but cant fint it on the webs Dec 30 14:48:12 aha.. cool Dec 30 14:48:18 for linux or windows? Dec 30 14:48:21 win Dec 30 14:48:25 aha Dec 30 14:48:42 i run linux but also win xp on virtualbox. Dec 30 14:52:37 download this: http://rapidshare.com/files/327974112/all_router_utility.zip.html Dec 30 14:53:44 this tool is kind of self esplanatory, but if you have doubts or problems, just write here Dec 30 14:54:03 i have just managed this: enter upgrade mode, then unplug power and then restart thes slug. now ALL LEDs are green. I think not all should be on, since i only have one usb stick connected Dec 30 14:54:39 thanks, will try that utility too. Dec 30 14:55:08 btw: you will have to connect the NSLU directly to your pc...you might use a switch, but dont connect to a router Dec 30 14:55:26 you could accidently upgrade your routers firmware :D Dec 30 14:55:59 if your xp uses an another NIC than your host system, then it would be better Dec 30 14:57:13 Nomad__: my virtual xp uses the same physical nic Dec 30 14:57:30 Nomad__: however, perhaps i can run the utility through wine. Dec 30 14:58:29 disconnet your pc from your router and connect it to your NSLU2 (via cross-over or, if your NIC supports autoMDI-X, a normal ethernet cable) Dec 30 14:59:08 can't i just connect to a switch? Dec 30 14:59:45 this will work...but not with your router connected to the same sswitch Dec 30 14:59:55 at least it worked for me Dec 30 15:00:31 i mean just connecting the slug to a switch, and connecting my pc to the same switch Dec 30 15:00:54 yup, thats what i mean. Dec 30 15:01:48 right now rapidshare is too busy, so have to wait to download it :P Dec 30 15:02:16 yeah thats the problem with free-user downloads Dec 30 15:02:47 would you mind sending the program through www.yousendit.com? Dec 30 15:02:57 then you would only need my email Dec 30 15:02:57 mom Dec 30 15:03:18 mom? Dec 30 15:03:37 mom for "wait a MOMent" Dec 30 15:03:38 :D Dec 30 15:03:42 ok :) Dec 30 15:03:50 btw: i just could send it via email Dec 30 15:04:00 yeah i guess it's small huh Dec 30 15:04:07 830 kb Dec 30 15:04:10 gabriel.klappenbach@gmail.com Dec 30 15:04:52 you german? Dec 30 15:05:07 no... just have a german last name :P Dec 30 15:05:12 actually live in sweden Dec 30 15:05:49 i have a german ancestor i guess, far back :) Dec 30 15:07:49 btw: never try to run this tool on a Windows 7 pc...i don't know why, but it always leads into bluescreen :D Dec 30 15:07:59 haha ok Dec 30 15:08:30 so you enter the mac address of the slug? Dec 30 15:08:45 no you just press "search" Dec 30 15:09:11 ok...well i sounds like the same strategy as the linux program that can be used Dec 30 15:09:19 it looks for compatible hardware and shows you a list...you select one, then you select a firmware and just press "upload" Dec 30 15:09:27 "upslug2" Dec 30 15:09:44 hm...you could also try using this one Dec 30 15:09:50 http://www.cyrius.com/debian/nslu2/install.html Dec 30 15:10:17 and there is the tool you mentioned Dec 30 15:10:22 for windows Dec 30 15:10:49 but perhaps it's easier with the windows tool anyway Dec 30 15:11:11 so no need to send it Dec 30 15:11:17 i can download it there Dec 30 15:11:26 ah k Dec 30 15:12:08 damn gmail...doesn't want to send a .zip file -.- Dec 30 15:12:34 haha never mind, i got it now :) Dec 30 15:12:38 where did you find it? Dec 30 15:15:00 on that page i linked to Dec 30 15:15:08 uh oh gotta go eat or my gf will kill me Dec 30 15:15:19 she doesn't understand the slug :/ Dec 30 15:15:33 thanks for your help and maybe i'll see you later! Dec 30 15:15:47 np Dec 30 15:16:31 you have to raise the WAF (women acceptance factor) of your slug somehow :D Dec 30 15:26:18 lol :) Dec 30 15:32:09 ok now i'm behind my own router. Dec 30 15:32:24 so should be able to talk with the slug... Dec 30 15:35:04 yay i can ping the slug :) Dec 30 15:42:33 thanks a bunch Nomad__, you got me going when i was stuck with the slug issue :) Dec 30 15:42:44 i'm now running the debian installer :) Dec 30 15:46:48 i'm glad i could help Dec 30 15:52:36 how long have you had your slug? Dec 30 15:52:47 and what do you use it for? Dec 30 15:53:18 oh by the way, it should be no problem to run a basic java program in it right? i mean java J2SE Dec 30 15:59:09 has anyone used the debian installer on linux? I keep getting connection lost to the slug... and must connect again and run the installation! Dec 30 15:59:34 just once and it worked :D Dec 30 15:59:41 it seems to remember where i left of, sort of Dec 30 16:00:37 gabriel@gabriel-desktop:~$ ssh installer@192.168.1.101 Dec 30 16:00:38 ssh: connect to host 192.168.1.101 port 22: Connection refused Dec 30 16:00:40 crap Dec 30 16:00:47 now i cannot connect even Dec 30 16:01:57 bleh.. guess i must reflash it after all Dec 30 16:49:36 hmm.. on the page for detecting disks, and it says: Dec 30 16:49:43 The module dm-mod failed to load. You may need to pass parameters to the module to make it │ Dec 30 16:49:44 │ work; this is common with older hardware. These parameters are often I/O port and IRQ numbers │ Dec 30 16:49:46 │ that vary from machine to machine and cannot be determined from the hardware. An example │ Dec 30 16:49:48 │ string looks something like "irq=7 io=0x220" │ Dec 30 16:49:53 │ │ Dec 30 16:49:56 │ If you don't know what to enter, consult your documentation, or leave it blank to not load │ Dec 30 16:49:59 │ the module. Dec 30 16:50:16 what is this about? I only have one usb stick connected to the slug Dec 30 16:55:48 gabriel_: not sure but i just checked one of my slugs (debian) which has two usb storage devices both working fine, Dec 30 16:55:53 and im not using that module at all. Dec 30 16:56:17 yeah, i skipped it and i can still format the usb stick... so it seems it wasn't needed Dec 30 16:57:06 why does it want ext2 for the boot partition though? why not ext3? Dec 30 16:57:39 well, thats conventional Dec 30 16:57:46 i see Dec 30 16:57:51 ive seen that suggested in various places Dec 30 16:58:03 has anyone tried using ext4 on a slug? :) Dec 30 16:58:04 but i am pretty sure ive used other filesystems for boot before. Dec 30 16:58:43 i certainly havent, don't see why you cant if you are interested though. Dec 30 16:59:14 i just read it's effecient or something. but maybe it's not so good for this weak little machine :P Dec 30 16:59:39 im sure it would be fine. Dec 30 16:59:51 i don't consider slugs to be that weak at all! Dec 30 17:00:20 a slug will kick my LCIIIs ass any day of the week. Dec 30 17:00:26 what is that? Dec 30 17:00:32 old mac Dec 30 17:00:35 haha ok :D Dec 30 17:01:24 it's pretty cool this little thing. it should run a file server with say a 30Mbit connection without any problems, right? Dec 30 17:01:33 sure Dec 30 17:01:36 i have 3 of them Dec 30 17:01:37 and perhaps 30 simultanious users Dec 30 17:01:45 hmmm Dec 30 17:01:48 that might get a bit messy Dec 30 17:02:05 depending on how much they hammer it. Dec 30 17:02:24 i have one running apache with not much problem at all Dec 30 17:02:32 well let's say they peak at 30Mbit/s, using two usb drives Dec 30 17:02:43 well how much traffic do you get? Dec 30 17:02:58 very little. Dec 30 17:03:01 well then Dec 30 17:03:11 thats why i said it might get messy! ;) Dec 30 17:03:15 i want to know if it can handle some load Dec 30 17:03:25 i wouldnt trust it for load. Dec 30 17:03:32 a small load :P Dec 30 17:03:37 in a demanding environment. Dec 30 17:03:42 just... 10Mbit/s would be ok Dec 30 17:03:58 ime copying big files is slow Dec 30 17:04:02 but reliable. Dec 30 17:04:04 just in my home.. for people from a small community to use Dec 30 17:04:15 at home for casual use should be fine. Dec 30 17:04:27 why slow? is the the RAM or cpu that is the bottleneck? Dec 30 17:04:35 i think its mainly ram personally Dec 30 17:04:37 and slow i/o Dec 30 17:04:47 usb 2 is fast though Dec 30 17:05:01 but linux manages ram pretty damn well. Dec 30 17:05:06 i dunno. Dec 30 17:05:15 well i guess i can try it out later :) Dec 30 17:05:34 i have another slug running a mailserver too. Dec 30 17:05:40 cool Dec 30 17:05:44 again it works very well for my (very light) use. Dec 30 17:06:25 yeah, i guess you can't run a pokersite on it ;) Dec 30 17:06:33 in that case, Dec 30 17:06:36 where it hurts, Dec 30 17:06:45 is when mails go to spamassassin Dec 30 17:07:05 i didnt bother putting clamav on there, Dec 30 17:07:14 as i suspect that would be even nastier. Dec 30 17:07:26 :) Dec 30 17:09:48 have you ever installed java on a slug? Dec 30 17:09:54 nope Dec 30 17:10:00 what os do you run on it? Dec 30 17:10:01 but i have perl on one Dec 30 17:10:04 debian Dec 30 17:10:11 on a disk or usb stick? Dec 30 17:10:17 i only have a usb stick now Dec 30 17:10:27 i started on a 4GB flash stick Dec 30 17:10:36 but i liked it so much, that i bought two more slugs, Dec 30 17:10:37 cool. i have 2 GB only hehe Dec 30 17:10:42 and got 3 x 500GB drives. Dec 30 17:11:08 it's like a little baby for men, lol :P Dec 30 17:11:20 well Dec 30 17:11:24 cool, so you have a usb hub connected? Dec 30 17:11:28 something like that i guess. Dec 30 17:11:31 nope Dec 30 17:11:49 i just have the disks in the first port Dec 30 17:12:03 in two of them i put 4GB flash drives in the other port Dec 30 17:12:05 for backups Dec 30 17:12:12 and the third has a webcam Dec 30 17:12:49 although the webcam is not working atm due to some problem with the kernel and the driver in debian being out of step. Dec 30 17:13:29 oh you just have one disk per slug? Dec 30 17:13:37 yep Dec 30 17:13:39 i see Dec 30 17:13:47 thats a total of 1.5TB between 3 slugs... Dec 30 17:13:51 would it work with a usb hub? Dec 30 17:13:51 i think one disk is enough! ;) Dec 30 17:14:24 nooo.. just 500GB for a fileserver might not be enough :) Dec 30 17:17:56 im very confident that it would handle 2 of them. Dec 30 17:18:08 i think you could get away with a hub though Dec 30 17:18:20 cool Dec 30 17:18:26 but i would advise you to put it on the 2nd port and boot from the first one. Dec 30 17:19:03 and i think using a hub may impair performance too but i have no hard facts about that. Dec 30 17:19:21 isn't the cpu and ram of the slug the bottleneck anyway? Dec 30 17:19:28 for patient casual users i think its certainly worth a try. Dec 30 17:19:36 i think the ram more than the cpu. Dec 30 17:19:43 it can hardly be the disks or a usbhub, if it supports usb2.0 Dec 30 17:19:56 i don't know the actual speed of the cpu but it seems quite beefy to me. Dec 30 17:20:06 im used to using pretty old hardware and some crazy archs though. Dec 30 17:21:02 i think usb 2.0 is o.k. Dec 30 17:21:17 but i don't think its a great bus for connecting storage to. Dec 30 17:21:34 (unless just casually) Dec 30 17:30:45 i don't know much about that stuff Dec 30 17:31:00 but usb 2.0 is very fast isn't it? Dec 30 18:10:22 i think it has good throughput. Dec 30 18:11:50 its possible that im overstating the impact of the usb, i don't really know. Dec 30 18:12:08 my guess is the ram is the biggest factor whatever the case. Dec 30 19:28:08 does anyone know if it's normal for the installation program for debian to be stuck on "Select and install software" at 2% for an hour?? It seems like it's stuck! Dec 30 19:29:13 and can i safely disconnect and login again and resume the installation via ssh? **** ENDING LOGGING AT Thu Dec 31 02:59:57 2009
