**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Sat May 29 02:59:57 2010 May 29 14:03:59 hi May 29 14:04:28 finally I managed to get an external access to serial port in an acceptable way May 29 14:04:57 aesthetically acceptable May 29 18:01:59 Hello. May 29 18:02:27 hi May 29 18:03:09 I'm finally getting around to trying to get a couple slugs configured. I've got it upgraded with the OpenBE 5.3 image and ssh'ed into it. Planning on installing Gentoo, but rather than use a USB thumb or HD, I wanted to nfsmount a volume on my workstation to it. May 29 18:03:58 I can mount this same shared volume on other machines, but doing it on the slug gives me a "mount: mounting gen9300:/tftpboot/slug1/disk on /mnt/gentoo failed: Input/output error" result after a moderate wait. May 29 18:04:14 Any ideas why the nfs mount would fail on the slug, but not on the other machines? May 29 18:13:28 dunno May 29 18:13:38 I use openwrt on my slug May 29 18:16:48 Problem seems to be on the slug side, as I mount stuff back and forth between different machines on my network, but the slug won't nfs mount from any of them. May 29 18:21:56 nfs install up to date? May 29 18:25:48 On my other machines, yes. May 29 18:26:22 i meant on the nslu2 May 29 18:26:35 The nfs host machines are reporting that it got an authenticated request. What I am finding in the dmesg output on the slug is this (2 lines) May 29 18:26:36 rpcbind: server localhost not responding, timed out May 29 18:26:36 RPC: failed to contact local rpcbind server (errno 5) May 29 18:27:01 I dunno if it is or not. I'm using the OpenSLBE 5.3 image. May 29 18:27:15 the ipkg feeds are funny atm.. May 29 18:27:16 erm May 29 18:28:24 http://www.slug-firmware.net/s-dls.php Using the first image. May 29 18:28:37 yeah May 29 18:28:41 but you can still update packages etc May 29 18:29:07 It's Debian, so it's apt-get or aptget? May 29 18:29:20 oh May 29 18:29:26 apt-get May 29 18:29:36 dpkg -l | grep nfs May 29 18:30:06 I don't seem to have dpkg or apt-get. I'm running out of the image I just mentioned, so whatever's there is what I've got. May 29 18:31:24 I've no idea tbh, never used it May 29 18:31:32 AH, something called pokg May 29 18:32:23 http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/SlugOS/HomePage says openembedded based May 29 18:59:46 opkg install *blah* May 29 19:00:40 (although i guess you figured that out by now - sorry) May 29 19:01:55 Yea. I also figured out that without extermal storage, there's no room for it to download the package list :( May 29 19:04:02 heh May 29 19:04:13 i think you'll find gentoo a bit painful tbh. May 29 19:04:30 how are you planning to install stuff? distcc or cross compiltation? May 29 19:04:37 Unforuntantely, it's all I know. May 29 19:04:39 cross comp May 29 19:04:48 just put debian on there. May 29 19:05:00 its much easier to use than gentoo May 29 19:05:11 you'll get your head round apt in no time. May 29 19:05:45 im not saying this because i don't like gentoo - i love it, but deb is much more suited if you want proper grown up linux on the slug. May 29 19:06:01 Hrm. May 29 19:06:10 I'll give it a shot. May 29 19:06:56 you'll still need some sort of external storage ofc. May 29 19:07:18 ive gone as small as a 4GB usb stick and as big as a 500GB seagate drive. May 29 19:07:57 the irc client i am currently using for this conversation is running off deb on one of my slugs! ;) May 29 19:08:25 I'd really like to wind up with a NFS mounted image. May 29 19:09:00 My ultimate goal is replace a 1Ghz EPIA system I have in the attic that runs my temperature logger and animal trap monitor. May 29 19:09:13 It uses owl-fs for the 1wore stuff, logs it to a mysql database. May 29 19:09:40 so you want no storage on the slug at all? May 29 19:09:43 sheesh. May 29 19:09:56 Nope. May 29 19:10:04 you are making things very difficult for yourself. May 29 19:10:41 i dont think it will be much fun, but stick a 4gb usb drive in there and it'll be easy as pie once you learn apt. May 29 19:11:16 what you want is certainly doable though. May 29 19:11:18 Why should making it be diskless create that many problems? Modern kernels support a NFS mounted root. May 29 19:11:30 you'll just have to do insane amounts of googling. May 29 19:11:55 yeah they do but you presumably need to pass parameters to the kernel May 29 19:12:09 I guess I should be able to build the system locally on a USB HD and then move it over to the server. Should only need to change a few config files. May 29 19:12:49 Yes, but the new kernels allow for built-in command lines. Not sure when that was first supported, but hopefully by 2.6.27 May 29 19:13:01 Assuming Debian is on that version. I know the Gentoo build is. May 29 19:15:48 Linux kowloon 2.6.26-2-ixp4xx #1 Wed Mar 10 01:13:28 UTC 2010 armv5tel GNU/Linux May 29 19:15:51 thats stable May 29 19:16:09 Linux shatin 2.6.32-trunk-ixp4xx #1 Mon Jan 11 06:46:25 UTC 2010 armv5tel GNU/Linux May 29 19:16:12 unstable May 29 19:16:40 stable might actually be a bit newer i have a funny feeling that i upgraded the kernel but havent booted into it yet. May 29 19:17:42 Heh May 29 19:18:38 nah... May 29 19:18:44 its still .26 May 29 19:19:38 anyway good luck May 29 19:19:44 let me know how you get on. May 29 19:36:45 OK. Gonna go fish up a USB HD. Should have some around here, somehwere. May 29 20:12:42 someone managed to get the beeper working under openwrt? May 29 20:12:46 I installed ixp4xx-beeper May 29 20:12:48 kmod May 29 20:13:00 but can't figure out how to use it May 29 20:56:56 Yrouel: i cant remember how it works, but i used it on debian and it totally screwed the speaker - ymmv. May 29 21:00:46 Yrouel: i think there is a userland tool May 29 21:01:01 beep May 29 21:01:13 but I can't find it for openwrt May 29 21:01:26 I don't have a buildroot up at this time May 29 21:01:30 unfornunately May 29 21:01:34 heh May 29 21:02:05 i have been messin with openwrt a bit May 29 21:02:10 on my router though May 29 21:02:19 damn that project has poor documentation /o\ May 29 21:02:38 really nice software for wrt54gl - waaaaaay better than linksys stuff May 29 21:02:42 but such horrible docs. May 29 21:02:57 and im terrified of trying to my roll my own for fear of bricking the damn thing. May 29 21:03:06 -my May 29 22:22:23 I guess that would mean you don't have a JTAG programmer? May 29 23:12:32 k4jcw: nope ;) May 29 23:13:02 i dont like opening stuff up or messing with hardware much. May 29 23:13:15 I see. May 29 23:13:39 ill get down and dirty with embedded linux on stuff like the slug or the zaurus though May 29 23:13:42 can't manage to get beeper beep May 29 23:13:45 :( May 29 23:13:52 but thats mainly because the docs make it pretty clear what you need to do. May 29 23:13:56 I installed the module May 29 23:14:00 One thing that irritates me about Windows, Gentoo (not as much) and Debian is that the installer asks questions in the middle of the install. It's really hard to just start and walk away. May 29 23:14:15 but after that I really dn't know howo to make it some noise May 29 23:14:18 I used to have a Zaurus. May 29 23:14:27 i still have two of them May 29 23:14:33 i use mine pretty much every day May 29 23:14:45 k4jcw: agree about installs. May 29 23:15:08 I forget why I got rid of mine. I ended up going to a Palm TX. I still use that to play Bejewled, but my G1 does everything else these days. May 29 23:15:22 yeah May 29 23:15:30 I think it was because the Zaurus software just wasn't quite there yet, back then. May 29 23:15:34 i should have got a g1 while they were still available. May 29 23:15:42 They still are. May 29 23:15:50 You just can't get them directly from Google. May 29 23:15:52 don't think they are in the uk. May 29 23:16:03 Ah, you're across the pond. May 29 23:16:09 No idea about over there. May 29 23:16:14 aaah, i was talking about massively subsidized via the phone company! ;) May 29 23:16:43 We can still get them from T-Mobile at the original price, the only difference is you have to do it through the store instead of through Google. May 29 23:17:03 i don't know if you have this thing in the states, but in the uk, all phones (iphone excepted) are massively subsidized via your phone company. May 29 23:17:12 Yea. May 29 23:17:17 i have a sony ericsson thing, w595 - its crap but it does 3g May 29 23:17:24 if i bought it without a contract, May 29 23:17:38 it would cost £100-£200 or so i gues. May 29 23:17:43 but its effectively free. May 29 23:18:23 What annoys the hell out of me is that I can't get a Nexus One for $199, because I'm not 2 years into my contract on the G1. Most of us G1 owners got screwed that way. May 29 23:19:01 And I don't want to flat out buy an N1 because they're releasing so many new Android platforms. By the time by contract is up (another 6 months, IIRC), the N1 will be more obsolete that it already is. May 29 23:19:20 does the nexus 1 have a hardware keyboard? May 29 23:19:30 for a device to be a "zaurus killer" for me it must do so. May 29 23:19:32 No. May 29 23:19:46 But the on-screen kbd is really usable. May 29 23:19:53 I do prefer a slider, given the choice. May 29 23:20:12 thats why i love the g1 so much. May 29 23:20:21 im cheap too, May 29 23:20:26 :) May 29 23:20:27 Same here. May 29 23:20:30 so what i like to do, is ssh into my machine at home, May 29 23:20:38 I just really really want Froyo 2.2 on the G1. May 29 23:20:43 and check mail, browse using links etc. there. May 29 23:20:59 that way i pay peanuts as im just shifting a few bytes backwards and forwards. May 29 23:21:11 infact, my 3g stuff is again practically free. May 29 23:21:45 I have an unlimited data plan as part of my package (which is surprising inexpensive, as rip-off US cellular pricing goes). May 29 23:22:21 i think if you have flashy smartphones here you tend to get that, May 29 23:22:42 but on my plan where i pay ~£20 a month or so, May 29 23:22:55 i can only download 500mb per month before it goes insane May 29 23:23:07 but as i say, 500mb is a hell of a lot of ssh! ;) May 29 23:23:29 Yah May 29 23:24:19 the problem i have with onscreen keyboards is just that they take up too much space. May 29 23:24:20 I've gotten pretty addicted to whipping out the G1 to look up questions that people ask, or for mapping. Mapping is probably one of my more bandwidth intensive things I do. May 29 23:24:54 I agree May 29 23:25:08 e.g. the iphone gives you about 3 lines (slight exaggeration) with the onscreen keyboard. May 29 23:29:48 * Yrouel nott May 29 23:37:25 OK. Debian is booting from the attached 250GB HD. That's step 1. May 29 23:37:43 Step 2 is to wander up to the bar and get dinner. Wife is out of town, so me and the dogs are on our own. May 29 23:38:18 Actually, step 1.5 is to do and apt-get install; apt-get upgrade **** ENDING LOGGING AT Sun May 30 02:59:56 2010
