**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Tue Feb 28 10:59:56 2006 Feb 28 12:21:57 so, I know this is not quite on topic for this channel, but I've just completed porting NetBSD to the NSLU2. Feb 28 12:23:03 I felt compelled to say thanks to you guys for all the documentation on the website/wiki. Feb 28 12:24:00 heey Feb 28 12:24:03 that sounds cool Feb 28 12:24:16 I'd say it's quite ontopic, btw Feb 28 12:25:28 it's a neat bit of kit. I've worked with various ixp425 boards, including the Intel IXDP425. So porting to the slug was easy. It arrived on Saturday, hooked up serial console and tweaked core clock by Sunday, booted NetBSD by yesterday. ;) Feb 28 12:25:29 Is it documented anywhere? Feb 28 12:25:43 that was... *quick* Feb 28 12:26:11 I'm a NetBSD developer, so I plan to commit it sometime soon. Feb 28 12:26:18 neat Feb 28 12:26:32 Do you know if NetBSD has support for DiskOnChip devices? ;) Feb 28 12:26:35 the only downside is no NPE support in the public tree Feb 28 12:26:50 "DiskOnChip"? Feb 28 12:27:39 flash chip Feb 28 12:27:46 M-Systems DiskOnChip Feb 28 12:28:05 ah. google knows all. Feb 28 12:28:07 "no" Feb 28 12:28:27 I've got a DS101, which is kinda close to the slug, except that it has an internal IDE-interface and 64mb ram ;) Feb 28 12:28:40 same cpu? Feb 28 12:28:45 yeah Feb 28 12:30:01 looks quite cool. I think I'd prefer the PPC variant. Feb 28 12:30:26 Yeah, that's nice too, but I wanted one without a fan ;) Feb 28 12:33:13 Linux boots on the DS101, but the flash doesn't quite work yet Feb 28 12:34:58 what's up with Flash? It looks to be regular CFI... Feb 28 12:35:10 It isn't :( Feb 28 12:35:28 It has an odd filesystem on top too Feb 28 12:35:42 hmm, so why is there a link to a CFI app note on the website :/ Feb 28 12:35:51 is there? Feb 28 12:36:11 Could you paste it? Feb 28 12:36:23 oh, I'm looking at the DS101G+ hardware page Feb 28 12:36:25 sorry Feb 28 12:36:26 aah Feb 28 12:36:49 The DS101J and G+ have normal CFI flash Feb 28 12:37:39 does the DS101 have the same ixp420 variant as the Slug? As in, no hw crypto? Feb 28 12:37:46 yeah, 420bb Feb 28 12:37:54 bummer Feb 28 12:41:05 the Loft has a 425 ;) Feb 28 12:41:19 [g2]: ping Feb 28 12:41:33 Loft? Feb 28 12:41:41 <[g2]> NAiL pong Feb 28 12:41:52 You know more about the loft than I do ;) Feb 28 12:42:03 <[g2]> ixphacker nice nick Feb 28 12:42:26 <[g2]> ixphacker NetBSD eh ? Feb 28 12:42:53 oui Feb 28 12:43:07 <[g2]> I've got a custom 425 board Feb 28 12:44:08 <[g2]> ixphacker are you running BE or LE ? Feb 28 12:44:12 I have a couple here. ixdp425, adi coyote, and another prototype. Feb 28 12:44:19 BE Feb 28 12:44:35 <[g2]> I"ve got madwifi-ng running Feb 28 12:44:58 <[g2]> you are probably using the USB for ethernet Feb 28 12:45:05 no :) Feb 28 12:45:33 <[g2]> do you have ethernet running ? Feb 28 12:45:34 I ported the Access Library for my employer. The port is not public, however. Feb 28 12:46:10 Ethernet is working fine Feb 28 12:46:25 but it won't be part of the public port in NetBSD's source tree. Feb 28 12:46:44 <[g2]> well my box has 3 or 4 MiniPCIs Feb 28 12:46:51 I'm hoping someone else will take up the challenge. I don't think it would be appropriate for me to repeat the port. Feb 28 12:47:07 <[g2]> so running wifi or plugging in a minipci e100/e1000 is trivial Feb 28 12:49:55 <[g2]> well there are some license issues but for my box I can run without it quite well Feb 28 12:50:44 <[g2]> I'd be interested in the base port without any IAL/CSR/OSAL Feb 28 12:51:07 <[g2]> ixphacker are aware of the DSM-G600 ? Feb 28 12:51:29 <[g2]> the Rev A is a an IXP420 but there's a Via GigE Feb 28 12:51:38 ixphacker: want an NetBSDSlug section on the wiki to write down some thoughts? Feb 28 12:51:41 <[g2]> and IDE/USB2.0 intf Feb 28 12:52:06 [g2]: looks nice Feb 28 12:52:16 rwhitby: not right now, thanks Feb 28 12:52:43 <[g2]> well you could put an open NetBSD IXP port on there Feb 28 12:53:02 <[g2]> they are $149 US for the Rev A but it's discontinued now Feb 28 12:53:10 <[g2]> 64MB ram and 16MB flash Feb 28 12:53:27 what's in the current variant? Feb 28 12:53:37 <[g2]> Linux Feb 28 12:53:37 unfortunately it's $250 for it here in Norway :( Feb 28 12:53:46 the RevB is PPC Feb 28 12:53:56 which PPC? Feb 28 12:54:00 Another freescale, innit? Feb 28 12:54:09 82xx, probably Feb 28 12:54:09 <[g2]> 8541 or 8451 ? Feb 28 12:54:15 hmm Feb 28 12:54:17 * NAiL doesn't know Feb 28 12:54:23 8241 or 8245 it would be, not an 85xx Feb 28 12:54:37 bah. not supported by public NetBSD then :/ Feb 28 12:56:57 heey Feb 28 12:56:59 <[g2]> 8245 Feb 28 12:57:05 Looks like I've got networking on the DS101 working ;) Feb 28 12:57:25 (more or less, of course) Feb 28 12:57:25 ixp400_eth: ethernet 0 using NPEB and the PHY at address 1 Feb 28 12:57:25 Division by zero in kernel. Feb 28 12:57:25 maclist: adding random MAC for key 0x0 Feb 28 12:57:25 ixp400_eth: Use MAC address 56:fc:05:52:ec:b7 for port 0 Feb 28 12:57:29 <[g2]> Sandpoint 8245 @170Mhz Feb 28 12:58:18 maclist: adding random MAC for key 0x1 Feb 28 12:58:18 ixp400_eth: Use MAC address 5a:ab:73:14:4e:f7 for port 1 Feb 28 12:59:19 now the only stuff left is the damn DoC+ Feb 28 13:02:42 eww, random MAC Feb 28 13:03:15 yeah, the MAC-address is stored in flash Feb 28 13:03:51 and it's not exactly easy to read yet, since the DoC+ support is... less than complete. Feb 28 13:04:14 I'm hoping that the bootloader sources will give me some clues Feb 28 13:04:33 heh, Feb 28 13:04:46 The loadavg on the DS101 went up to 1.00, of course... Feb 28 13:04:54 silly intel drivers Feb 28 13:05:31 <[g2]> ixphacker when you commit can you send me an e-mail ? Feb 28 13:05:54 <[g2]> feedback at http://www.giantshoulderinc.com Feb 28 13:06:01 sure. addy? Feb 28 13:06:38 <[g2]> you'd probably get a kick out of http://www.giantshoulderinc.com/hw-4533 Feb 28 13:07:16 <[g2]> the web site is out of date Feb 28 13:09:01 <[g2]> and http://www.giantshoulderinc.com/ab3/case.jpg Feb 28 13:12:54 that's a nice board. Feb 28 13:13:00 <[g2]> thx Feb 28 13:14:54 did you consider supporting xDSL via the 425's UTOPIA interface? Feb 28 13:15:18 <[g2]> actually I've been thinking about T1s Feb 28 13:15:25 hmm Feb 28 13:15:36 xDSL would be my "killer app" Feb 28 13:15:52 The Coyote has ADSL, but I'd need to mod the board to make it work in Europe. Feb 28 13:16:08 Then I'd need to write the code... Feb 28 13:16:10 <[g2]> Ah... you should just by a Loft :) Feb 28 13:16:42 how many $$$? ;) Feb 28 13:16:50 <[g2]> some of the NPE A stuff comes out on the high-density header on the bottom :) Feb 28 13:16:51 425's are not cheap Feb 28 13:17:03 <[g2]> $349 for case, board and PS Feb 28 13:17:09 <[g2]> US Feb 28 13:17:27 <[g2]> doubt you'll find in any cheaper Feb 28 13:18:16 533MHz? Feb 28 13:18:24 <[g2]> yep IT rated Feb 28 13:18:29 <[g2]> POE too Feb 28 13:18:39 <[g2]> well passive POE Feb 28 13:18:59 Hmm, I'd like one. But the wife would never approve ;) Feb 28 13:19:21 <[g2]> you'll have to make it a corporate purchase :) Feb 28 13:21:02 <[g2]> the RV042 has a 425 on it, but you'll have to do some serious hacking on it Feb 28 13:43:42 03oleon * 10unslung/sources/libuclibc++/abi.cpp.patch: libuclibc++: provide missing dl_iterate_phdr() Feb 28 13:56:13 Good CONFIG_PREEMPT is on now. I've been using it on my robot for the last year without problems. Feb 28 13:56:27 heh Feb 28 14:00:30 NAiL, Nice cleanup. I'm glad to see somebody is watching out for efficiency. Feb 28 14:00:40 I don't like bloated kernels. Feb 28 14:01:57 NAiL, is the latest kernel working smoothly with the cleanups? Feb 28 14:02:09 Also, did you hear about the other guys for the monotone mess? Feb 28 14:03:43 the monotone mess is cleaned up. You'll have to fix your local repo before you sync Feb 28 14:14:28 using the aforementioned trick on the yahoo group? (I was waiting as someone replied saying it wasn't working) Feb 28 14:15:21 it works now, he just applied the fix and downloaded an old db snapshot which still had the problem Feb 28 14:20:56 I guess I can just wipe my repo and start again. I'm waiting for the release to make changes anyways Feb 28 14:21:38 thatæll work too Feb 28 14:21:48 s/thatæll/that'll/ Feb 28 14:21:48 NAiL meant: that'll work too Feb 28 14:22:53 hehe Feb 28 14:23:51 æ and ' are right next to eachother Feb 28 14:24:18 Unfortunately, so is backspace and enter, which proved fatal when I was trying to write to flash a little while ago :( Feb 28 14:24:26 * NAiL overwrote RedBoot on the DS101 Feb 28 14:24:27 03oleon * 10unslung/make/libuclibc++.mk: libuclibc++: added exception handling and toolchain install/deinstall targets Feb 28 14:24:37 do I have to change the --db=monotone/nslu2-linux.db part ? Feb 28 14:24:48 no, just so the path is correct Feb 28 14:25:00 if you're in the openembedded dir, it'll be correct Feb 28 14:25:04 ok Feb 28 14:25:39 monotone: misuse: revision 9c1b32d8825be71ddfdcbe3ddfa31b4cc8bb2aa0 already has children. We cannot kill it. Feb 28 14:25:54 yeah, I know Feb 28 14:25:56 just ignore Feb 28 14:26:02 but monotone heads gives: monotone: branch 'org.openembedded.dev' is currently merged: Feb 28 14:26:02 eda55732aabcdbe9b7a5ce2a93388d6d8f32aaa7 koen@openembedded.org 2006-02-28T11:50:40 Feb 28 14:26:17 yes, which is to be expected Feb 28 14:26:18 so I guess I'll try a make update now. Feb 28 14:26:21 yup Feb 28 14:26:21 cool. Feb 28 14:26:32 03oleon * 10unslung/sources/libuclibc++/.config: libuclibc++: added exception handling Feb 28 14:27:56 looks good. Feb 28 14:28:33 cool i see the zd1211 is updated and the wpa_supplicant is there too. Just in case I want to connect my bot to my new 802.11g network Feb 28 14:28:48 yup Feb 28 14:29:11 I was surprised to see my zd1211 dongle (airlink 3026) eats up only around 150/250ma when idle/tx'ing. Feb 28 14:29:39 Still way too much but still not too bad. My BT dongle does something like 35ma though Feb 28 14:29:54 I could experiment with the zd1211's power management feature though. Feb 28 14:31:05 I haven't tried that yet. Dunno if it actually works. Feb 28 14:32:09 the nice thing is that those drivers supports BE and LE and ARM. even 64bits. Feb 28 14:32:16 Nice piece of work. well supported. Feb 28 14:32:26 and power management is on the feature list. Feb 28 14:32:33 cool Feb 28 14:32:40 I have only run it on BE/LE ;) Feb 28 14:58:55 ls Feb 28 15:02:37 . Feb 28 15:02:38 .. Feb 28 15:02:41 zImage Feb 28 15:22:58 Hi, is there such thing as sar available for openslug? Feb 28 17:02:00 hi Feb 28 17:03:33 Daluv_: What's sar? Feb 28 17:20:20 Nail:sar - Collect, report, or save system activity information. Feb 28 17:20:47 it is avalaible for unlsung but not for openslug. Feb 28 17:20:53 "sysstat" Feb 28 17:24:31 doesn't look like it's there, no Feb 28 17:25:25 Some someone will have to add a .bb for it *hint-hint* ;) Feb 28 17:34:10 mwester are you there ? Feb 28 17:34:36 i have some spare time for the moment and we could run some test on the unslung alpha Feb 28 17:42:39 eiffel_: which disk did you unsling to, the one in port 1 or port 2? Feb 28 17:45:28 port2 Feb 28 17:45:48 tried port1 before didn´t work either Feb 28 17:47:29 Is the directory /share/hdd/conf empty on your unslung slug? Feb 28 17:47:48 yes Feb 28 17:56:45 Ok, I presume you are familiar with symbolic links and such - cd to the /share/hdd/conf directory and type the following: Feb 28 17:57:26 ln -s ../../flash/conf/tmp Feb 28 17:57:37 ln -s ../../flash/conf/usrgrp.info Feb 28 17:57:45 ln -s ../../flash/conf/smbpasswd Feb 28 17:57:57 n -s ../../flash/conf/passwd Feb 28 17:58:21 n -s ../../flash/conf/share.info Feb 28 17:58:47 oops, that last line should be ln -s ../../flash/conf/share.info Feb 28 17:59:17 k done Feb 28 17:59:25 the links are working Feb 28 17:59:56 Tryp plugging in a flash device or drive... Feb 28 18:00:00 on port 1 Feb 28 18:02:10 hm i only got usb nfts hdds :-/ Feb 28 18:02:59 if it has to be an ext3 drive Feb 28 18:03:06 it will take some time Feb 28 18:03:29 Oh ok - shut down slug, add hdd to port 1, reboot -- it should automatically mount and share the NTFS drive (mine worked). NTFS and FAT both work on port 1 now Feb 28 18:08:47 hm no didn´t work the ntfs hdd on port 1 is recognized as not formatted :-( Feb 28 18:09:01 can anyone here explain how i can get more information about the changes that come in when i run 'make update' ? Feb 28 18:09:15 just curious Feb 28 18:09:46 and new to monotone/bb/oe Feb 28 18:12:57 Eiffel: hmmm... I was hoping the smaller set of sym links would do the trick. If you list the contents of /share/flash/conf, and ensure that each file/dir present has a sym link pointing to it from /share/hdd/conf, perhaps that might make it work. I discovered that the Linksys "QuickSet" utility seems to still reference data on the /share/hdd/conf partition even if the unit is running from... Feb 28 18:12:58 ...the /share/flash/* partitions -- might be a latent Linksys bug. On mine, it fixed a password change problem from the GUI, and it also corrected the autodetect/automount for drives and flash devices plugged into port 1. Feb 28 18:15:20 hm can i just delete /share/hdd/conf und replace it with a symlink zu /flash/hdd/conf ? Feb 28 18:15:36 -zu + to Feb 28 18:15:38 sry Feb 28 18:17:21 oops the directories i mentioned are wrong met /share/flash of course *g* Feb 28 18:17:34 Eiffel: you could try! That would certainly break things if ever you plugged a native ext3 drive into port 1 as the linksys code will attempt to mount on top of the sym link. But for now it should suffice. Feb 28 18:19:05 ok rebooting Feb 28 18:22:49 what i am trying to find out is how i can get a changelog for recent changes,to have at least some idea about how useful a newer build is Feb 28 18:23:00 something like a commit mailing list Feb 28 18:25:04 hm didn´t work i´ll try an other drive just to be sure Feb 28 18:29:30 nope the drive isn´t the problem where should i look to verify if the ntfs kernel module is really there Feb 28 18:29:41 -if + that Feb 28 18:30:50 lsmod Feb 28 18:31:09 Which version of unslung are you running? Feb 28 18:36:03 @pepijin maybe you are looking for this http://cia.navi.cx/stats/project/nslu2-linux ? Feb 28 18:39:04 cat /proc/version Feb 28 18:39:05 Linux version 2.4.22-xfs (unslung@unslung.org) (gcc version 3.4.4) #1 Sat Feb 11 01:26:14 GMT 2006 Feb 28 18:41:36 eiffel: yes, found that one, but it only shows the most recent changes, and not a code level Feb 28 18:41:54 * pepijn is thinking cvs diff Feb 28 18:44:00 Eiffel: I've always looked at the web gui home page - it should list the unslung version. Feb 28 18:44:42 ok Feb 28 18:45:03 V2.3R63-uNSLUng-6.5-alpha Feb 28 18:45:13 Yep, looks like you have the ufsd module loaded. there's some other reason your slug does not identify the drive as NTFS formatted, apparently... Feb 28 18:46:40 i used this description to build the image http://wiki.nslu2-info.de/pmwiki.php/HowTo/DebslugSelfmade Feb 28 18:46:51 maybe the source isn´t the right one ? Feb 28 18:47:06 dunno if the monotone file is ok Feb 28 18:48:56 The monotone head for 6.5 was pretty stable for a while. The current head is 6.6, and 6.7 should appear before tomorrow morning (cleanup of many small loose ends and minor bugs before we release the beta versions) Feb 28 18:49:54 ah ok maybe i should update my build environment and rebuild a new image ? Feb 28 18:52:53 I'd very much like to get this problem identified before we release 6.7, I thought the sym links would fix it for certain! You can try to update the build env (make update) and build a new image. If you do so, you will also wish to format the drive to which you unslung as a FAT or NTFS volume (which will force the NSLU2 to actually reformat the device to EXT3 -- it doesn't actually do a... Feb 28 18:52:55 ...format on an already-formatted partition no matter what you do from the web gui!). Perhaps some of the other things you've tried over time to fix this are preventing it from mounting correctly now. If you have the time, I would appreciate you trying this before we commit 6.7-alpha to monotone! Feb 28 20:46:16 cron.info /dev/null Feb 28 20:46:19 is this possible in /etc/syslog.conf : Feb 28 20:47:57 kami22, i think it is, but why not give it a try and enlighten us as well ... Feb 28 21:42:14 lordeiffel: any results? (Wonderful messages from the build, huh? I'm not an expert on the build steps - perhaps someone else knows how to suppress those error messages!) Feb 28 21:47:44 dis anybody managed to compile ppp and rp-pppoe natively on unslung? Feb 28 21:50:34 and another question, adduser conflicts with coreutils, I wanted to report this Feb 28 21:51:22 /join #nslu2-general Feb 28 21:51:24 oopt Feb 28 21:51:29 oops, even Feb 28 21:56:11 Do all of the current optware platforms have local disks? If not how do they handle letting the user define the initial bootup actions? Feb 28 21:57:57 I've managed to get my slug hard disk NFS mounted on my WAG354G router and get it to run wl500g optware executables so I'm now looking to work out how to get it to restart after a reboot. Feb 28 21:59:14 My current preferred option would be variable in NVRAM that contains a command to pass to the shell (with ; used to allow multiple commands) unless anyone has a better idea Feb 28 22:00:17 The firmware is on a readonly squashfs file system so it can't have a user editable script Feb 28 22:01:56 The alternatives I considered were either using wget to fetch a script or letting the user specify an NFS path to mount and executing a script at a fixed location on there but neither of those seemed very elegant. Feb 28 22:04:16 mwester didn´t work out :-( but i am off for today Feb 28 23:16:32 Eiffel: Ok. I assume that means that it didn't mount at boot; we'll have to continue debugging. I'll be pushing the changes for 6.7-alpha up in a few hours. Maybe we can try again tomorrow. Feb 28 23:19:04 how can I compile something depending on definitions from unistd.h on an unslung system? I don't find the headers Feb 28 23:20:55 eddyp: did you install the unslung-devel package? Feb 28 23:21:14 yes Feb 28 23:21:47 * eddyp also found the coreutils conflicted with adduser package during that install Feb 28 23:21:49 It hides in /opt/armeb/armv5b-softfloat-linux/include/unistd.h Feb 28 23:22:15 oh, so I need to add it to Include path Feb 28 23:22:31 thanks for the info Feb 28 23:22:39 it should be there gcc -v says --with-headers=/opt/armeb/armv5b-softfloat-linux/include Feb 28 23:25:45 I get an error about crypt not being defined ... Feb 28 23:26:17 * eddyp tries to get pppoe working on unslung Feb 28 23:30:17 Have you remembered the -lcrypt option, libcrypt.so.1 should be in /lib Feb 28 23:39:37 the ppp guys have forgot that :-( Feb 28 23:49:58 yay, ppp compiled!
