**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Mon Jul 31 02:59:57 2006 Jul 31 11:20:21 03oleo * r3683 10optware/trunk/make/procps.mk: procps: upstream upgrade to 3.2.7 Jul 31 12:16:56 did a few tests today regarding why the nslu2 doesn't always boot when a serial cable is connected to the nslu2 but not the PC. Jul 31 12:17:43 it's not a level problem: I tried RX to ground (boots fine) and RX to VCC with a 4.7K resistor, both configs boot ok. Jul 31 12:20:16 However, an unconnected twisted pair to the serial connector (about 10CM long between VCC and RX) made the nslu2 not to boot. I checked with a voltmeter, and the stub injects a 1.6V (50Hz) signal into RX. 1.6 > 3.3V/2 and this is why redboot gets confused. Jul 31 12:22:43 solution: either don't leave the serial cable unconnected at the PC end... or bridge pin 2 and pin 4 (RX to GND) when you don't use the serial cable. Jul 31 12:24:16 Now, I didn't see this mentioned anywhere in the wiki, so where's the best place to stick this info? on the "add a serial port" page or in the troubleshooting section of the faq? Jul 31 12:27:10 i'd say the add serial port page Jul 31 12:28:36 Cheers, I'll add what i just wrote, you guys can always change it later Jul 31 13:00:03 so what do most people use out of all the slug os's Jul 31 13:00:37 mlh: Unlung is 4:1 to SlugOS and Debian (which are currently about the same, with Debian rising fast) Jul 31 13:11:00 rwhitby: interesting; I would have guessed the 2.7 kernel options would have been more popular Jul 31 13:11:19 2.6 kernel (of course) Jul 31 13:13:21 more popular with people who want to run linux. People who use it as a consumer appliance don't really care. Jul 31 13:14:10 For them, it's all about ease of getting the application they need to run with a minimum of installation time and fuss Jul 31 13:16:42 ok. i'd realy like access to the latest kernels and and a large range of software. Jul 31 13:16:50 I'm an experienced linux user. Jul 31 13:17:06 so what would you recommend? Jul 31 13:18:05 of course I want decent stability and some ease of maintenance too Jul 31 13:18:28 OK, I've added a paragraph to http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/AddASerialPort I hope it gets approved ;-) Jul 31 13:19:52 I personally run SlugOS/LE (DebianSlug) and Debian Testing on my slugs. Jul 31 13:22:02 IvanZ, tnx Jul 31 13:22:07 looks good Jul 31 13:27:32 eFfeM: no problem, I have this hard patch on my skull where I kept scratching... wouldn't wish that to anyone else! Jul 31 13:28:07 thanks Jul 31 13:28:24 03oleo * r3684 10optware/trunk/make/sdl.mk: sdl: upstream upgrade to 1.2.11 Jul 31 13:28:29 why is there a little-endian and big-endian ? Jul 31 13:30:44 mlh: the slug is "originally" BE, but LE is needed to run eg. Debian Jul 31 13:30:59 mlh: i think because the ARM processor is capable of both... big endian might be faster for net related tasks (net is big endian if i remember) Jul 31 13:31:12 IvanZ: correct Jul 31 13:33:43 hi NAiL Jul 31 13:34:12 hi Jul 31 13:34:26 eFfeM :) Jul 31 13:36:37 back from holiday, moved to mtn 0.29 yesterday just to find out that my root partition on the slug was nuked Jul 31 13:37:45 ouch Jul 31 13:38:24 ah, not too bad, but need to reinstall a few packages, I keep no important data in the root partition Jul 31 13:38:41 NAiL: but there seems to be a BE debian too.. Jul 31 13:52:27 jeez this linksys firmware upgrade takes a long time Jul 31 13:52:53 1% done after about 30 minutes Jul 31 13:53:01 *??* Jul 31 13:53:42 it shouldn't take more than 2 or 3 minutes Jul 31 13:54:08 i dunno Jul 31 13:56:21 03oleo * r3685 10optware/trunk/ (make/sysstat.mk sources/sysstat/common.c.patch): sysstat: upstream upgrade to 7.0.0 - added patch for kernel page size Jul 31 13:57:33 yay 2% Jul 31 13:57:44 * mlh sleeps Jul 31 14:23:36 03oleo * r3686 10optware/trunk/make/procps.mk: procps: revert to 3.2.3 on wl500g - wchar/locale not included with default toolchain Jul 31 14:43:15 03oleo * r3687 10optware/trunk/make/procps.mk: procps: fix build reference to watch Jul 31 20:00:57 Hello Jul 31 20:02:10 I've not yet coded for the NSLU2 is there anything one has to consider e.g. number of threads / network stack ? Jul 31 20:03:11 Unslung is based on a "normal" linux kernel and not on a RT Kernel ?
