It would not compile and give an error "syntax error in VERSION script" I did some searching (google) and what I found is it might be related to Ubuntu (my system) having /bin/sh -> dash.  I also read if you re-run configure it will compile the second time as it is related to libtool not being created yet the first time it is called.
