Some operators provide a USSD command to get it, for instance Vodafone-UK uses *#100#, others send a free SMS to retreive it. There is also a special SIM phonebook location that can hold the value, but it has to be populated somehow initially

May 19 09:00:37 <pnunes> gaojinl: if you can not set the MSISDN number, it's probably because the MSISDN file is not present on SIM (this file is not mandatory). I suggest to try with another SIM/USIM.
