Sep 21 10:54:58 loaden: shr is pretty much dead, why would you want to do that? Sep 21 10:57:20 mmmh isn't great to hear that Sep 21 10:58:22 i don't like android and have a N900 in productive use. basically it's just fun Sep 21 10:59:13 what do you think is the most active / not death linux for phones? Sep 21 10:59:26 Android Sep 21 11:01:15 kk the second one :P Sep 21 11:01:30 this couldn't be android again Sep 21 11:01:32 :) Sep 21 11:03:17 Tizen Sep 21 11:03:46 from Wikipedia "Currently, Tizen is the fourth largest mobile OS in terms of market share." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_operating_system#Tizen Sep 21 11:05:19 some other Linux based mobile distros here: https://wiki.debian.org/Mobile#software-distros Sep 21 11:06:25 what are you aiming at? http://xyproblem.info/ Sep 21 11:11:30 loaden: personally, I would say pick your favourite device, add support for it to Linux mainline (and bootloaders, GPU drivers etc), and then you will be able to run any Linux distro on it Sep 21 11:12:54 :) have a old nexus. just wan't do play around a little Sep 21 11:14:39 a chroot of your favourite distro under Android is probably your best bet. if that is Debian, see this page, but similar techniques apply to other distros: https://wiki.debian.org/ChrootOnAndroid Sep 21 11:16:30 already had debian and ubuntu on that nexus Sep 21 11:17:01 ubuntu has all phone apps. but it's slow... Sep 21 11:17:14 I came the the same result after investigating a little bit more: Seems SHR is dead. Sep 21 11:17:36 so i thought abour shr. but if it's dead Sep 21 11:17:43 *about Sep 21 11:18:23 QtMoko had commits from 2015 I think in the git. But I don't think that is much. Seems to be dead now too. Sep 21 11:18:37 on the other site I don't need active development if the system is stable Sep 21 11:19:09 Maybe give QtMoko a try then. N900 you said? Sep 21 11:19:17 yes Sep 21 11:19:44 N900 is the greates phone I ever had. have so much fun with this Sep 21 11:19:51 basically everything from openmoko days is dead, even the openmoko related mobile stuff that was in Debian was removed Sep 21 11:19:55 Otherwise Maemo community update edition. I just had to search for myself because I want to get some N900. Sep 21 11:19:58 and have fun today also :) Sep 21 11:20:18 pabs3: SHO too? Sep 21 11:20:42 the good thing about N900 is that it is the best supported mobile device in Linux mainline, so any Linux distro should run on it (I doubt Android would though) Sep 21 11:20:49 SHO? never heard of that Sep 21 11:20:50 loaden: You want to have stable GSM/SMS functions but which are open source, right? Sep 21 11:20:59 never head about sho Sep 21 11:21:11 FSO. Sep 21 11:21:14 yes Sep 21 11:21:44 loaden: Like me too. I did a lot of search last days. But most links and projects are dead today. Sep 21 11:22:14 yeah, FSO got removed from Debian. upstream it moved to github but isn't very active AFAIK (hi mickeyl :) Sep 21 11:22:57 Seems Maomo 5 is the most stable one for that. You can use the community update if you don't do already. I learned that too. Also there is the Neo900 option maybe one day. Sep 21 11:23:38 Android needs a lot of CPU and RAM today I think. I don't know if that is working for future releases. Sep 21 11:24:12 FSO was a nice idea about what I read. A common interface for all that low level functions. Too sad. Sep 21 11:24:18 postmarketOS (Alpine Linux derivative) might be worth a look Sep 21 11:25:09 The thing is. Theoretical I could get a working Gentoo on the N900. But that's more some desktop then instead of phone. Phone functions are important for me. Sep 21 11:26:52 postmarketOS looks like a very nice idea.... Sep 21 11:26:59 installation of apps etc. is to slow on gentoo because of the weak processor Sep 21 11:28:03 i installed gentoo years ago on a older laptop and had to compile kde... 7 hours Sep 21 11:30:34 I am using Gentoo on all my systems since.... 10 years or so. Sep 21 11:31:08 Without systemd and all nice modern things. It's not much changing since then. Sep 21 11:31:28 i do the same thing with debian Sep 21 11:31:37 since 10 years Sep 21 11:31:40 or longer Sep 21 11:33:55 PostmarketOS is sadly also without some interface. I think the most lacking thing is really a stable and working phone interface without much magic and effects, more working for every day. Sep 21 11:34:14 Debian was my second choice. Now it would be devuan I think. Sep 21 11:34:57 no device supports voice calls -> https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Supported_devices Sep 21 11:39:03 loaden: you can use LuneOS, but you'll need to port some things as well Sep 21 11:39:54 I was the only one keeping SHR build-able, but few months ago I had to cut down official build server and recenly I've officially stopped supporting old shr metadata as well: https://github.com/shr-distribution/meta-smartphone/commit/e931678b7ec29872387f4342f7fc60d07cc599a7 Sep 21 11:39:59 so now it's officially dead Sep 21 11:40:11 while LuneOS is still rolling and receiving new features Sep 21 12:59:27 LuneOS looks nice too. Sep 21 13:08:05 is that the webOS fork? Sep 21 13:08:24 Seems so. Sep 21 13:08:25 ah yes Sep 21 13:08:41 * pabs3 ugh at anything web related Sep 21 13:10:54 pabs3: You don't like web-connected phones? Sep 21 13:12:49 or web-connected anything Sep 21 13:14:57 That's a critical thinking, it's not bad. I am sceptical too. Some mobileOS which is having GSM/SMS services working and reliable but with some browser, email client and nothing really furher would be perfect for me. Android is therefore not the way to go. Too much cloud involved. Sep 21 20:28:25 * DocScrutinizer05 mumbles arcane magic incantations... "set firewall options mss-clamp interface-type all - set firewall options mss-clamp mss 1452" Sep 21 20:37:27 COMMIT-CONFIRM CONFIRM SAVE EXIT vyatta HILTRON viatta BridgeMode vyattaviatta EdgeMax Zoooooooooom Sep 21 20:56:54 obviously dealing with network stuff can cause insanity ;-) Sep 21 20:59:12 the above magic words lose in writing, you need to read them exactly like written, with the capitals **** ENDING LOGGING AT Fri Sep 22 03:00:00 2017
