Aug 20 03:12:57 hmm... after installing the Gestures app in 2008.8 on SD, my main OM2007 system wont boot. Still, I think I have "customized" these distros to their end. Something will prob need to be reflashed Aug 20 03:22:27 jadams: did you get the GPS python patches ok? Aug 20 03:22:38 rwhitby, I have to apply them tomorrow Aug 20 03:22:40 from work Aug 20 03:22:48 my main laptop at home has massive failures, but it works Aug 20 03:23:01 but basically, there's an APIC error on the CPU that breaks USB occasionally, other things Aug 20 03:23:23 and I'd have to reboot to get it fixed, and I'm watching a video on xen vs. vmware performance (http://media.brianmadden.com/briforumplayer/bfplayerdynamic.asp?id=323&sparky=1) Aug 20 03:23:30 hence, no reboot, so tomorrow Aug 20 03:24:14 rwhitby, but I'll let you know how it goes Aug 20 03:30:21 nice Aug 20 03:30:27 openvpn on the openmoko Aug 20 03:30:28 lol Aug 20 03:30:54 that was fun Aug 20 03:31:28 nope, OM2007 boot is borked too. I get [ 145.45000] PM: Removing info for No Bus:vcs3 (and then for vcsa3, then vcs2, then vcsa2) Aug 20 03:35:31 * johnsu01 tries to get music playing under debian Aug 20 03:42:50 debian didnt boot Aug 20 03:42:58 uimage Aug 20 03:43:06 wth Aug 20 03:43:06 debian uimage faliure Aug 20 03:43:24 ok gonna try the 2gig Aug 20 03:46:12 DocScrutinizer: can you get Andy to look at bug #1843 - looks like wiml has solved the u-boot dfu upload problem Aug 20 03:49:11 damn...I guess I'll start to reflash and see when it starts working again Aug 20 03:50:11 Any one ready to sell me a freerunner ? Aug 20 03:55:10 broken or good one? Aug 20 03:55:10 mikef187: the guys at koolu.com are probably ready to sell you one. Aug 20 03:56:16 they're canadians though Aug 20 03:56:22 so they only barter in souls Aug 20 03:56:52 beer Aug 20 03:56:56 s/souls/seal pelts/ Aug 20 03:57:08 they are like aussies.. give em beer Aug 20 03:57:13 beer, soul... same difference Aug 20 04:00:42 ieatlint: only because the dollar's losing value : Aug 20 04:00:43 :) Aug 20 04:01:50 lucky for me I kept testing that backup script for dfu-util :-D hopefully it doesnt make me have to revert as far Aug 20 04:02:04 capitalist bastards Aug 20 04:03:26 yeah, now we are Canada's Mexico...come vacation for cheap!! Aug 20 04:03:55 oh no food poisoning, and our parties aren't as awesome Aug 20 04:06:13 ieatlint, i'm gonna do it then Aug 20 04:07:00 that is, i'm gonna write a bluetooth gui and daemon for auto-forwarding to headsets Aug 20 04:07:40 rooly: for asu? Aug 20 04:07:44 yes Aug 20 04:07:52 sounds good Aug 20 04:08:09 rooly: have you gotten a BT headseat to work in a call? (sorry if you visited this already) Aug 20 04:09:09 nope Aug 20 04:09:11 not yet Aug 20 04:09:17 just got one a little while ago Aug 20 04:09:49 i can get music to play to headset...but not gsm yet Aug 20 04:10:30 the way to get calls over bt is weird Aug 20 04:10:38 it's explained on the wiki, at least partially Aug 20 04:10:57 there's a direct connection between the audio codec and bt module it seems Aug 20 04:11:40 it goes way over my head ;) Aug 20 04:13:22 UndrWater: I'm looking at mixer settings trying to get sound to play now... Aug 20 04:13:32 sound as in music Aug 20 04:14:44 it's not a setting in the mixer Aug 20 04:15:08 for playing pcm, the bt headset will appear like its own audio card Aug 20 04:25:17 johnsu01: i used a gentoo-wiki ( i think?) page to help me out) Aug 20 05:10:34 hm, got headphone sound playing vorbis but only in one ear Aug 20 05:12:15 johnsu01: a2dp? Aug 20 05:12:33 undrwater: no, just in the headphone jack... got it working now, just fiddling with alsamixer Aug 20 05:12:49 johnsu01: ahh! :) Aug 20 05:12:51 needed to mute amp spk Aug 20 05:13:07 did that break anything else? Aug 20 05:13:14 don't know yet :) Aug 20 05:14:42 sounds pretty good though Aug 20 05:33:20 hello all Aug 20 05:39:04 hello Pyrasi Aug 20 05:46:34 E: Internal error: install Aug 20 05:46:41 very helpfull message Aug 20 05:47:10 aggtrfrad: opkg? Aug 20 05:53:33 did ya get those too? Aug 20 05:54:18 yes Aug 20 05:54:26 I think those are discussed in the instructions, aren't they? Aug 20 05:55:11 hm, no, guess I was confusing it with the om instructions Aug 20 05:55:20 they are not in openmoko's wiki or the debians wiki Aug 20 05:55:36 I'm sure that's just because the keyring isn't installed yet Aug 20 05:56:15 yeah, but anyway i wish i'd get a most specific error message than that.. Aug 20 05:56:48 I didn't see that install error the first 12 times I ran the installer, then suddenly I saw it twice today Aug 20 05:56:49 <`6og> how can it be more specific? Aug 20 05:58:06 P: Configuring package apt Aug 20 05:58:06 P: Configuring helper cdebootstrap-helper-apt Aug 20 05:58:06 E: Internal error: install Aug 20 05:58:53 <`6og> until i have a big enough sd card to install debian i can only provide limited help Aug 20 05:59:12 <`6og> although a pastebin of the full error and related info would hlep Aug 20 05:59:32 thats all the info :) Aug 20 06:00:04 * `6og doesnt belive iyou Aug 20 06:00:17 * johnsu01 can vouch for that Aug 20 06:00:21 there is a script that aoutomaticaly downloads installs and configures debian+packages into the micto sd Aug 20 06:00:50 <`6og> i thougth there was one on the debian wiki page Aug 20 06:00:53 * aggtrfrad cant spell Aug 20 06:01:26 there is a new official release that comes with zhone from fso Aug 20 06:02:48 heh it worked this time :) Aug 20 06:02:52 weird.. Aug 20 06:04:52 `6og: i installed it to 512M just fine for the first time Aug 20 06:05:03 `6og: even managed to fit gdb and zile there :) Aug 20 06:05:45 <`6og> lindi-: my mate intsalled it and said he had 2mb left over. i figured i'd wait until i had a larger card :) Aug 20 06:21:10 `6og: he probably installed something extra or used "df -h" to measure how much space is left Aug 20 06:21:25 is anybody using 2008.8 Aug 20 06:21:40 the keyboard is about to drive me insane Aug 20 06:22:34 is there even a backspace? Aug 20 06:23:33 LuYu: read the wiki about the kb Aug 20 06:23:50 slid your finger from right to left...that's your backspace Aug 20 06:24:00 i was using rasters image Aug 20 06:24:15 LuYu: ahhh...i think it works basically the same Aug 20 06:24:18 but it appears that the installer replaced the keyboard without my permission Aug 20 06:24:30 wheres the backspace key? Aug 20 06:24:44 did you try the left slide? Aug 20 06:24:56 i tapped all over the screen Aug 20 06:25:02 is it a specific spot? Aug 20 06:25:04 did you slide? Aug 20 06:25:20 place your finger on the right side of the keyboard...then slide towards the left Aug 20 06:25:38 hold on Aug 20 06:25:42 ill try again Aug 20 06:26:21 hmmm Aug 20 06:26:36 all the programs are refusing to load now Aug 20 06:26:39 grrr Aug 20 06:26:43 ill have to reboot Aug 20 06:26:53 maybe bad image Aug 20 06:27:04 hmmm Aug 20 06:27:12 i dont know Aug 20 06:27:21 none of the images seem to be stable Aug 20 06:27:29 no md5sums? Aug 20 06:27:34 but i was accepting that cause i sort of thought it was the point Aug 20 06:27:54 i used rasters image Aug 20 06:27:58 its non standard Aug 20 06:28:04 it came with a better keyboard Aug 20 06:28:14 but somehow the keyboard reverted Aug 20 06:28:18 i know....i saw it on the lists...but apparently it's supposed to be more stable that standard asu Aug 20 06:28:20 i suspect the installer did it Aug 20 06:28:21 im not sure this script i right :/ i think some parts of it shoult be run from the debian installation eg. Not creating home directory `/var/run/dbus'. Aug 20 06:28:21 Can't start system message bus - /proc is not mounted failed! Aug 20 06:28:41 well, it didnt exactly crash Aug 20 06:28:50 and it didnt exactly freeze Aug 20 06:29:07 and the standard 2008.8 image did both of those frequently Aug 20 06:29:13 so, maybe it is more stable Aug 20 06:33:11 i like the fact that 2008.8 has screen locking, though Aug 20 06:33:17 thats a total improvement Aug 20 06:33:39 how's raster's suspend? Aug 20 06:56:30 morning Aug 20 06:56:51 almost Aug 20 07:00:09 good morning Aug 20 07:00:21 ouch! trying to restore/reflash the u-boot backup made by dfu-util gives me the error "state(10) = dfuERROR, status(1) = File is not targeted for use by this device" Aug 20 07:01:23 it seems like the "backup" has some issues in actually being used Aug 20 07:01:57 Infoport, or the backup is invalid Aug 20 07:02:22 * cjb posts http://lists.openmoko.org/pipermail/devel/2008-August/001336.html Aug 20 07:02:30 anyone get maps for navit? Aug 20 07:05:34 ieatlint sure, that's what I meant. the "backup" was made using dfu-util, and it seemed to complete OK, but this is the first time I've tried to restore it Aug 20 07:07:34 cjb sounds great! I played with Paul's program today (after which my Neo wouldnt boot from any OS, maybe coincidence) and I thought that the rotation was the most currently practical (the other movements just report the gesture made, currently more proof-of-concept) Aug 20 07:20:43 well that was a learning moment-- NONE of my 3 backups of u-boot worked, all said File is not targeted for use by this device. Flashing a previously downloaded copy had no error Aug 20 07:21:24 hopefully this boot wont freeze at the splash screen (though maybe it is another section failing?) Aug 20 07:21:50 did you screw up your uboot, or what? Aug 20 07:22:05 i mean, what is it you're trying to accomplish? Aug 20 07:25:08 ieatlint yeah after using the Gestures (coincidence?) all my distros won't boot, getting kernel panic or another error about NoBus:vca3, etc, so I am trying to restore sections until they work Aug 20 07:28:22 ieatlint: not really sure what got borked, but reflashing "backup" version of kernel and rootfs hasnt fixed it, so now I'm going to downloaded copies. Reflashing "backup" u-boot gave me an error while flashing though Aug 20 07:31:55 you can backup by copying /dev/mtdblock partitions from linux userspace Aug 20 07:34:12 ieatlint WAIT, no a full battery seems to be booting (wasnt getting uboot menu even) Could a *low* battery have been partially booting and giving error? Aug 20 07:36:08 if I get the first Openmoko splash screen (no progress bar, no "Please wait") that means the issue is AFTER uboot, in kernel or rootfs, right? Aug 20 07:39:26 are the brass MB spacers with the debug board so that you can mount it in your own box? I'm starting to wish I could see the errors behind the scenes Aug 20 07:47:13 is there a way to enable accelerometers in 2007.2? i tried everything on the gestures page, but accelerometers seem not to work Aug 20 07:52:32 anybody buy the debug board? what do you do with all the brass MB spacers? (hex bolts with threaded hole on head) Seems to be more than needed even to make protective "legs" and posts above the board Aug 20 07:54:09 sorry, i've been busy working on a couple other projects so i didn't reply Aug 20 07:54:15 don't worry about the spacers Aug 20 07:54:36 just attach the jtag to the phone and the miniusb on the debug board to your computer and your good Aug 20 07:55:13 but if you can see the kernel panic on the neo's screen... you aren't likely to get any new info on the serial console Aug 20 07:55:34 ieatlint I already screwed some on below and above, and was considering which empty cereal box would be best :-D Aug 20 07:56:04 ieatlint now the main, in-phone OS is booting to the first splash screen and staying there Aug 20 07:56:30 does ssh start? Aug 20 07:57:25 ieatlint: no ssh isnt responding (didnt think it would-- that first screen has usually been too early to ssh in) Aug 20 07:58:08 then yeah, the serial console could help in that situation Aug 20 07:58:44 openmoko: 03julian_chu 07org.openmoko.dev * reff6f3fda966 10/packages/ (images/openmoko-bare-image.bb tasks/task-openmoko-bare.bb): [openmoko] Add openmoko-bare-image Aug 20 07:58:44 openmoko: 03julian_chu 07org.openmoko.dev * r3b502535a82c 10/packages/ (3 files in 2 dirs): [openmoko] Remove duplicate RDEPENDS Aug 20 08:00:47 ok, i'm off to get some food, bb in a little bit Aug 20 08:02:31 hexdump /dev/input/event2 and event3 returns nothing, anytbody else have this problem? Aug 20 08:02:49 i'm having it on 2007.2 and on 080813 Aug 20 08:09:37 funny-- there was a small sticker with a red X over the top of one torx screw...so it is obvious if someone opened the case? Aug 20 08:11:35 yes Aug 20 08:13:58 hi openmoko project Aug 20 08:14:27 for the linux day 2008 in dornbirn austria we are looking for a) openmoko presentation and maybe b) an openmoko booth Aug 20 08:14:39 Links: http://www.lugv.eu/ Aug 20 08:14:47 Links: http://www.lugv.eu/cfp.html Aug 20 08:15:10 I tried to contact the openmoko user group switzerland (via the openmoko wiki) but without any success. so i try it here. Aug 20 08:19:57 SachaS: http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/ the community list would be best fitted Aug 20 08:22:15 Zorkman: thanks will post to the community mailinglist. Aug 20 08:22:36 np Aug 20 08:24:27 btw SachaS: there is also a german channel for openmoko: #neo1973-openmoko Aug 20 08:24:52 openmoko: 03julian_chu 07org.openmoko.dev * r604e5a200419 10/packages/tasks/task-openmoko-feed.bb: [task-openmoko-feed] Add openvpn into openmoko feed Aug 20 08:29:16 I am having some tests with the accelerometers on 2007.2 ; I can only have the second (event3) working. cat /dev/input/event2 prints nothing Aug 20 08:30:16 and accelerometers doesn't print negative magnitude (decceleration) Aug 20 08:31:09 deubeuliou: both event2 AND event3 return nothing here :( Aug 20 08:31:20 same problem in daily build 080813 Aug 20 08:31:27 (and in 2007.2) Aug 20 08:31:41 mmmh :S Aug 20 08:31:41 did you do anything special to make event3 working? Aug 20 08:31:45 no Aug 20 08:31:48 deubeuliou: i had similar problems in 2008.8, playing with the xserver, restarting helped me, search the mailing list Aug 20 08:31:56 ok Aug 20 08:32:29 btw, do you know any way to make usb networking with the freerunner under windows __w/o__ being administrator ? Aug 20 08:32:35 I want to geek at office :D Aug 20 08:32:49 windows, whats that? Aug 20 08:33:01 it's a new playskool product Aug 20 08:33:10 okay:-) Aug 20 08:33:15 malik1972: restarting x server doesn't work... rebooting the FR also doesn't help Aug 20 08:33:18 but it runs on a pc Aug 20 08:33:44 no, i use windows 98 in a virtual box and wine for my needs Aug 20 08:35:20 zorkman: does it work if you shutdown x? Aug 20 08:36:43 malik1972: I'd love to be able to run linux here :D Aug 20 08:37:32 deubeuliou: just o be sure: if I type hexdump it has to show in my terminal if it registeres something, no? Aug 20 08:37:41 i don't have to go looking in some log file do i? Aug 20 08:37:49 mmmh what I can do is plugging the FR in the morning at my box@home and then ssh to it ... but I won't be able to shake it :DDD Aug 20 08:38:17 yeah, just hexdump /dev/input/event(2|3) Aug 20 08:38:34 Sascha, there's also #neo1973-germany which may have attracted some austrians... Aug 20 08:39:02 Zorkman, i assume you've tried echoing 1 into the wakeup for the accelerometers? Aug 20 08:40:13 yeah i did echo 1 >/sys/devices/platform/spi_s3c24xx_gpio.1/spi0.0/power/wakeup Aug 20 08:40:22 and echo 1 >/sys/devices/platform/spi_s3c24xx_gpio.1/spi0.1/power/wakeup Aug 20 08:40:26 ah, I didn't Aug 20 08:40:59 but it still doesn't work.... Aug 20 08:41:08 are there reports of broken accelerometers? Aug 20 08:41:46 it's not a broken accelerometer Aug 20 08:41:55 it's the software Aug 20 08:42:00 you're using 2007.2? Aug 20 08:42:00 but is has to work because when i do cat /sys/devices/platform/spi_s3c24xx_gpio.1/spi0.0/dump and then reposition the FR and o it again, i get another reacing Aug 20 08:42:07 could be a newer kernel is wanted Aug 20 08:42:18 yes i am (also 080813 booting from SD, bt have the same problem there) Aug 20 08:42:28 2007.2 is fully upgraded Aug 20 08:43:04 well, i dunno the answer, but i remember reading something about the issue in the mailing list Aug 20 08:43:35 the odds both accelerometers are broken though, and such that they give no data at all, is highly unlikely Aug 20 08:44:01 no i checked, they work (with cat /sys/devices/platform/spi_s3c24xx_gpio.1/spi0.0/dump ) Aug 20 08:44:16 (both work fine) Aug 20 08:44:29 kernel or sysctl issue, i dunno Aug 20 08:44:34 check sysctl.conf in etc Aug 20 08:45:01 hey I was wondering how to change the mirrors list for opkg Aug 20 08:45:01 in the bug report somebody said that chaging the kernel tothe official om2008.8 worked... but is it sensible to flash that kernel to my 2007.2 installation? Aug 20 08:45:03 Zorkman: sent an email to the openmoko community mailinglist. thanks for your help. Aug 20 08:45:28 np (did you read my and ieatlints hint to check #neo1973-openmoko ?) Aug 20 08:45:31 I have a freerunner but I cannot update my packages Aug 20 08:45:59 Zorkman: yes but the community mailinglist should also include the german speaking ones ;-) Aug 20 08:46:21 ieatlint: my sysctl.conf is empty Aug 20 08:46:27 Zorkman: btw the channel is empty ;-) Aug 20 08:46:47 Zorkman, well, i would check the mailing lists :P Aug 20 08:47:03 the blank sysctl.conf doesn't mean anything necessarily, i dunno if it should have anything Aug 20 08:47:42 after echoing 1 to the 2 power/wakeup , nothing changed (event2 still doesn't print and event3 still does) Aug 20 08:48:35 and the dump does print Aug 20 08:49:56 ieatlint: I already check the ML more than is good for me :) Aug 20 08:50:26 http://openmoko.markmail.org/message/md752hrpnfmu3apt?q=accelerometers+event2#query:accelerometers%20event2+page:1+mid:frzn473s6qh47qyg+state:results Aug 20 08:50:31 Zorkman, then you'll have to wait till one of the people who does kernel maintainance comes around Aug 20 08:50:50 the question, now, is : how to reconfigure neod ? Aug 20 08:51:01 yeah, no problem, i really want to test it, but it's not like i'll die if it doesn't happen today :) Aug 20 08:51:28 this debug board instructios are about as circular as the other wiki pages. I have to open 3-4 pages to get all the instructions, and still dont have it right. Plus short USB cables are making my life difficult Aug 20 08:51:46 deubeuliou: if you find a sollution, please PM me to tell me :) Aug 20 08:51:57 i'm off Aug 20 08:53:20 the pages are not clear-- should I put battery BACK IN after connecting the board and the cables? or is it just powered by connection to PC by USB? Aug 20 08:54:59 <_chronic> Infoport: heh, feel your pain re usb - had to get active usb cable extenders to test FR gps by window ... Aug 20 08:56:02 Infoport, the freerunner cannot boot without a battery Aug 20 08:56:04 <_chronic> Infoport: it's my understanding the FR won't boot without battery in. Aug 20 08:56:17 nor can it run from a 500ma usb connection Aug 20 08:56:20 Infoport: usb into both debug board and FR, and battery in Aug 20 08:56:41 it can't *reliably* run or boot with battery Aug 20 08:57:04 usually, it is able to, until the GSM starts transmitting, at which point it dies from too much current draw Aug 20 08:57:33 this also depends on which u-boot version you are running Aug 20 08:57:49 (since latest ones delay some things to smooth out the boot current requirements) Aug 20 08:58:34 *without ? Aug 20 09:01:07 trying to connect by cu (serial) gives a "Line in use" error...do I need to configure OpenOCD to watch boot process errors this way? Aug 20 09:01:47 you don't need openocd Aug 20 09:01:56 openocd is for the jtag, you just want the serial Aug 20 09:03:35 :) Aug 20 09:04:44 ieatlint: yeah, *without Aug 20 09:04:56 do I need to install the udev rules etc if I dont need to flash the board first? (it gives the correct vendor code) Aug 20 09:05:04 I didn't Aug 20 09:05:10 no, you don't Aug 20 09:05:28 but it does need to create ttyUSB0 (or another number) Aug 20 09:05:43 I find it with lsusb, but it doesnt seem to be at /dev/USB0 Aug 20 09:05:52 (I meant) I find it with lsusb, but it doesnt seem to be at /dev/ttyUSB0 Aug 20 09:06:06 the debug board isn't. Aug 20 09:06:16 u-boot console should be on ttyACM0 Aug 20 09:06:39 debug board is accessed by openocd directly through ftdi driver Aug 20 09:06:50 not through ttyUSB0 Aug 20 09:06:58 oh, must be bad advice from wiki (Debug_Board_v3 page) Aug 20 09:07:15 oh, my experience is with debug board v2 Aug 20 09:07:19 uhm, no, for just serial, openocd isn't needed Aug 20 09:07:19 dunno if v3 is different Aug 20 09:07:32 openmoko: 03raster 07org.openmoko.asu.dev * r89436a221f8f 10/ (97 files in 5 dirs): move all of e17/efl to svn from cvs. Aug 20 09:07:45 you do need a couple kernel modules though, i forget exactly which ones Aug 20 09:07:56 oh, you just want to get to serial console via debug board, not jtag? Aug 20 09:08:27 WOW, connecting to /dev/ttyACM0 shows something! (same as connecting to edit uboot entries) Aug 20 09:08:38 hmmm, maybe it was acm0... Aug 20 09:08:42 i know it just makes a tty Aug 20 09:08:46 error seems to be....can't get kernel image! Aug 20 09:08:59 oh, then that is uboot Aug 20 09:09:10 and it's from the usb cable to the phone, not to the debug board Aug 20 09:09:25 bad news for my "backup" files made with dfu-util Aug 20 09:09:43 thoroughly confused yet? Aug 20 09:10:25 so I am still not really watching it from the debug board? after all that disassembly and setting up the debug board with a short cable? *sigh* Aug 20 09:10:25 ok Aug 20 09:10:28 svn changes in Aug 20 09:10:31 happiness... is me Aug 20 09:10:38 that took enough work :) Aug 20 09:11:03 Infoport, well, if it's giving you a kernel image not found error, then that's uboot Aug 20 09:11:25 and unless you told uboot to use the serial for stdin/out/err, then yeah.. it's going over the usb to the phone, not the debug board Aug 20 09:11:47 but if you described it getting to a second splash and such... that's beyond uboot Aug 20 09:12:13 so something you're doing now is different than before, because it'll take less than a second for it to not find the kernel Aug 20 09:13:02 ieatlint: no no, it was NOT getting past splash with Openmoko logo, before you can usually ssh, and without progress bar NOR the "Please wait" Aug 20 09:13:30 did it scroll the screen with a bunch of text though? Aug 20 09:13:41 ieatlint: or is that the "second" splash? past the picture of boots? Aug 20 09:13:53 ieatlint: didnt see the text scroll Aug 20 09:13:57 if you see boots, it's found the kernel Aug 20 09:14:14 ok, basically if you're booting from nand and see ANY graphics, it's found the kernel Aug 20 09:14:51 and gcc takes way too long to build damnit Aug 20 09:16:25 ok I boot from NAND *menu*, and I get ERROR: can't get kernel image, so I guess it is positive-- my kernel is borked! I could have reflashed everything over and over faster than setting up this board, but my wife was so nice and insisted I buy it too, and I want it to be useful Aug 20 09:17:06 yeah, that means the kernel is missing, or uboot is misconfigured Aug 20 09:17:08 when I boot from NAND menu, it gives that error in text, and returns to the menu Aug 20 09:17:27 are you trying to boot from flash or the sd? Aug 20 09:18:15 ieatlint: trying to boot from flash, although it also wont boot from my SD distros Aug 20 09:18:58 http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Bootloader_environment is where you want to be Aug 20 09:19:13 NOR should work now though Aug 20 09:19:33 it should be able to boot from the flash without you doing anything extra (but with the old version of uboot) Aug 20 09:21:33 hey Aug 20 09:22:41 does anyone know where i can find the actual kernel-patches for the vanilla kernel (e.g. within the git-rep.)? Aug 20 09:24:27 damn it, now I am not getting any bootup (btw NOR wasnt finding kernel before either) and it doesnt seem to do anything Aug 20 09:25:56 I have 2 extra batteries, so I'm pretty sure one is charged. I have had to "reset" it by removing battery a few times (locked up at some screen) but havent beat it senseless yet Aug 20 09:26:13 wait, no I'm getting graphical Openmoko screen again Aug 20 09:26:16 now Aug 20 09:26:59 the installer in om2008, where are the list for package available in there on the net? Aug 20 09:27:42 hi Aug 20 09:27:47 ieatlint: "can't get kernel image", yeah I guess it is time to revisit bootloader commands...just wish this Debug Board attempt wasnt so useless Aug 20 09:28:00 (I did learn how to disassemble it though!) Aug 20 09:28:06 How do I get to the qwerty keyboard in 2008.8 ? Aug 20 09:29:41 I would like to update uboot to install debian on a SDHC card, how I know if I have a GTAv4 or GTAv5 ? Aug 20 09:29:56 Infoport, if it makes you feel better, you can set uboot to use serial for its console, and use the debug board to work on the uboot console Aug 20 09:30:01 if you bought from some reseller, you have v5 Aug 20 09:30:13 ieatlint: yeah NOR also "can't get kernel image" Aug 20 09:30:27 Infoport, ok, then you need to reflash the kernel Aug 20 09:31:24 ieatlint: how do I connect to it after choosing serial console? /dev/?? Aug 20 09:31:28 Tanuva: thanks Aug 20 09:31:33 (but I think kernel is the culprit here) Aug 20 09:31:38 Infoport, whatever tty the debug board makes Aug 20 09:31:44 else : http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Finding_hardware_revision Aug 20 09:31:49 look in /var/log/messages Aug 20 09:32:22 if it doesn't create a tty when you plug the debug board into the computer, then your computer is missing a kernel module to support it Aug 20 09:32:33 Texitoi: you could Disassemble it and read it on the motherboard :-D (prob the *HARD* way) Aug 20 09:32:35 (which is unlikely) Aug 20 09:33:10 TeXitoi, you can also look at /proc/cpuinfo Aug 20 09:33:13 Infoport: héhé Aug 20 09:33:22 revision 350 == v5 Aug 20 09:33:25 340 == v4 Aug 20 09:33:31 (330 v3 and so forth) Aug 20 09:33:39 360... Aug 20 09:33:42 ieatlint: how do I find the correct tty for the debug board? USB0 isnt working Aug 20 09:34:02 TeXitoi, ok, you have gta02v6 Aug 20 09:34:15 TeXitoi, use v5 stuff (the changes to the board don't affect it) Aug 20 09:34:18 oooh, sounds like TeXitoi got v6 (fixes made in advance) Aug 20 09:34:26 ieatlint: ok, thanks Aug 20 09:34:33 Infoport, watch the syslog as you plug in the usb port Aug 20 09:34:39 dmesg might also tell you Aug 20 09:34:40 my board says mine is v5 Aug 20 09:34:41 at the end Aug 20 09:34:42 I've just received it Aug 20 09:35:22 ieatlint: My dmesg is spamed by pcf50633 things Aug 20 09:36:25 that's the pmu... not sure why it's spamming your kernel though Aug 20 09:36:52 pcf50633_irq: entering(irq=53, pcf=c7d36c00): scheduling work Aug 20 09:36:52 pcf50633_work: INT1=0x00 INT2=0x00 INT3=0x40 INT4=0x00 INT5=0x00 Aug 20 09:36:52 ADCRDY Aug 20 09:36:52 pcf50633_irq: entering(irq=53, pcf=c7d36c00): scheduling work Aug 20 09:36:52 pcf50633_work: INT1=0x80 INT2=0x00 INT3=0x40 INT4=0x00 INT5=0x00 Aug 20 09:36:54 SECOND ADCRDY Aug 20 09:36:59 and again and again... Aug 20 09:37:30 dmesg has the ACM0 device, but doesnt seem to have another (using dmesg |grep tty) Aug 20 09:38:22 Infoport, could be missing kernel driver or improperly connected debug board Aug 20 09:38:37 TeXitoi, not sure what's causing that, a search on google doesn't give much Aug 20 09:39:05 TeXitoi, may try updating the kernel Aug 20 09:39:37 ieatlint: I have lost of things to try ;-) Aug 20 09:39:48 first uboot Aug 20 09:40:38 my only suggestion is to post to the mailing list Aug 20 09:40:47 you'll get the attention of people who know far more than i Aug 20 09:43:23 ieatlint: in syslog I seem to have the device, only no tty mention. it recognizes a USB hub Aug 20 09:43:25 New device added (hal udi is '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_1457_5118_noserial Aug 20 09:43:25 '). Aug 20 09:44:01 * ieatlint shrugs Aug 20 09:44:12 that number is the vendor codes for FIC and OM (1457 & 5118) Aug 20 09:46:13 ok, time to keep flashing, too much wasted trying to get Debug Board to do more than light up Aug 20 09:46:41 Infoport, you can tell if you connected it correctly to the neo by pressing the reset switch Aug 20 09:46:48 if the neo resets, it's right :P Aug 20 09:49:02 ieatlint: resets, like a reboot? damn, it doesnt seem to....maybe I dont have the small end of cable far enough into Neo (tight fit, like you have to force it in) Aug 20 09:49:21 yeah, it'll reset Aug 20 09:51:21 Hi, is there a performance difference between running openmoko (2008.8) from the phone memory or from a micro sd? Aug 20 09:51:47 KenSentMe: not that i have noticed Aug 20 09:52:20 the microsd controller is a bit of a bottleneck potentially at least, but not necessarily in practice very much Aug 20 09:53:39 Ok, thanks for the replies Aug 20 09:54:08 ieatlint: is a "reset" a white screen (of death?) and then power off? Aug 20 09:54:12 (FWIW, I am running debian from microsd and it doesn't seem to suffer much Aug 20 09:54:32 Infoport, in my experience, it's a hiss noise and the thing instantly reboots Aug 20 09:54:37 as in, starts up again Aug 20 09:55:08 anybody know what that hiss sound is? capacitators discharing in speaker circuit? Aug 20 09:55:24 ieatlint: or white screen and then try to reboot it seems. WOW I guess now it is actually connected (must have needed small end of flat cable to be forced further into connector) Aug 20 10:00:16 whoever wrote the "Manual Debian" wiki page - you have an excellent music taste :) Aug 20 10:00:30 still only see ttyACM0 in dmesg, but there was a device in syslog with code 1d50_5119 Aug 20 10:02:25 what distro should be ideal for a n00b openmoko application developer ? Aug 20 10:03:27 hmm I seemed to have flashed the uboot_env correctly -- now I have the 2nd boot but not the 3rd for qtopia. That backup worked at least Aug 20 10:03:40 AJuOnLiNE: I think FSO Aug 20 10:04:15 Zorkman: linux distro ? Aug 20 10:05:18 ah, i thought you meant distro on the phone Aug 20 10:05:30 ok, off to reflash. Debug Board *does* reset for me, but I was doing a "hard reset" with the battery many times before :P Aug 20 10:07:44 hello Aug 20 10:08:00 hello artur_ Aug 20 10:08:56 i'm trying to setup usb networking with dhcp on 2007.2 but it seems not to work Aug 20 10:08:59 any idea ? Aug 20 10:09:26 it works fine with a static setup Aug 20 10:09:42 sorry, i'm from barcelone, i know nothing Aug 20 10:10:41 ieatlint: by debug board seems to be shown in lsusb, but it doesnt say "Openmoko" or "Debug Board for Neo1973" in the output Aug 20 10:10:49 hello zedstar_ Aug 20 10:12:39 yo zorkman ! Aug 20 10:13:23 Infoport, i dunno what's up... i'm no expert :P Aug 20 10:13:44 ieatlint: oooh, I get better output from lsusb -v -d 0x01457 *when* I run it sudo Aug 20 10:15:49 btw, what seems the better distribution for use with freerunner today ? Aug 20 10:17:55 depends on what you want to do Aug 20 10:18:07 * Tanuva likes debian Aug 20 10:18:25 i work with debian at work and at home Aug 20 10:19:05 but in few words i'd like to have a working smartphone :) Aug 20 10:19:20 hows does debian handle cross compiling and dependencies? Aug 20 10:19:33 then 8.8 might be your first choice... or 7.2, but I haven't used both very much Aug 20 10:19:46 ieatlint: btw, the only thing I think I did differently when it borked was playing with Gestures on 2008.8, and leaving that daemon running Aug 20 10:19:51 7.2 seems to be minimalistic Aug 20 10:20:07 the shipping image, yes. the real image can do more... Aug 20 10:20:32 i tested quickly qtopia yesterday it seems to be more complete Aug 20 10:20:33 ouch, now a boot has "Magic bitmask 0x1985 not found at..." scrolling by from plain boot Aug 20 10:20:33 anyone know where I can download gps maps to the neo? Aug 20 10:20:41 what's the real image for you ? Aug 20 10:20:59 that reset button *is* useful after all :D Aug 20 10:21:12 the shipping one with some packages installed ? Aug 20 10:21:13 artur_: the one downloadable from the repo, *not* the one that shipped with the phone Aug 20 10:21:19 yes Aug 20 10:21:25 * rwhitby uses fso, since it's the only true community distro that gives commit privs to people who don't work for openmoko. Aug 20 10:21:41 * Tanuva has fso/debian dualboot Aug 20 10:21:53 omg do i hate marvell Aug 20 10:21:54 since fso runs really stable for me Aug 20 10:22:02 and i'm not too fond of realtek right now either Aug 20 10:22:21 sky2 and r8169 are evil evil nics/drivers Aug 20 10:22:47 bleah, and 2nd boot still gives "Kernel panic" after a bunch of scroll Aug 20 10:23:11 Infoport, kernel panic means it finds the kernel :P Aug 20 10:23:51 ieatlint: I dont know why different kernels should be borked though Aug 20 10:24:40 it's likely not the kernel Aug 20 10:24:46 Tanuva : You mean something from there http://buildhost.openmoko.org/releases/Freerunner/ Aug 20 10:24:46 rootfs Aug 20 10:25:00 the kernel can't mount it, for instance, would be an example of why it would panic Aug 20 10:25:16 ieatlint: rootfs borked on both at same time? Aug 20 10:25:28 Tanuva : Or ScaredyCat images ? Aug 20 10:25:31 artur_: hm... I'm not sure, maybe yes :D Aug 20 10:25:38 Infoport, i dunno what you have screwed up Aug 20 10:25:39 I'm not really into the gtk stack Aug 20 10:25:57 but if the kernel can panic, then it's been loaded Aug 20 10:26:15 you could well still have your uboot environment screwed up Aug 20 10:26:40 ok Aug 20 10:26:53 i'll try Debian first Aug 20 10:27:11 what about dhcp on usb0 ? No idea ? Aug 20 10:27:56 afk Aug 20 10:28:45 artur_, if static is working, but udhcpc can't get an address over the same link, then your dhcpd on your computer is not setup right Aug 20 10:29:18 (note that ip masquerading/natting with iptables will NOT forward dhcp) Aug 20 10:29:38 dhcpd is working fine but it receive no packets from the FR Aug 20 10:29:54 it goes thru a windows bridge Aug 20 10:30:08 artur_: do you have dhclient on your FR? Aug 20 10:30:22 i wouldn't trust a bridge to forward dhcp -- it's not standard tcp/ip Aug 20 10:30:24 good question Aug 20 10:31:14 haw can i check for dhcplient on FR ? Aug 20 10:31:19 new old rootfs, here I come! Aug 20 10:32:02 hello Aug 20 10:32:04 artur_: in shell : dhclient usb0 ? Aug 20 10:32:16 I would get the "I void warranties" t-shirt, but I dont think it applies since all these programs declare NO WARRANTY (and the phone was only for 41 days no DOA) Aug 20 10:32:29 oops 14 days no DOA Aug 20 10:33:28 dhclient usb0 : no, it is not installed Aug 20 10:33:52 is there a package for this one ? Aug 20 10:34:03 dhclient or something ? Aug 20 10:34:08 ieatlint: one more question about Debug setup...USB from board to PC, flat cable to Neo, and USB from Neo to PC? or should USB go from phone to board? Aug 20 10:35:02 Infoport, at a minimum, neo -> ribbon cable -> debug board -> miniUSB to regular USB -> computer Aug 20 10:35:51 oh, and it's not that i'm ignoring anyone asking me questions, it's that i'm working on something else and switching around with a kvm Aug 20 10:36:31 ieatlint so usually no USB from phone to PC while using debug board? Aug 20 10:36:57 the usb to the phone is separate from the debug board Aug 20 10:37:23 the phone operates normally with the debug board attached -- so you can use the usb, but you don't need to Aug 20 10:42:24 ok, i got dhclient from dhcp-client package Aug 20 10:42:52 odds are you already had the busybox dhcp client Aug 20 10:42:54 udhcpc Aug 20 10:46:45 ok new boot with new rootfs...seeing Boots, going slowly (prob thinks that it is "first boot" now) Aug 20 10:49:31 so, neither udhcpc nor dhclient works with usb0 :/ Aug 20 10:49:58 seems like torx screwdriver was needed along side guitar pick (but come w/different purchases, i.e. debug board has torx) Aug 20 10:50:10 i'll be back in a hour Aug 20 10:50:28 I read much about debian in the last time. Is this a new trend? Will there be a switch at any time or is it just 'for fun'? Aug 20 10:50:32 oohh, weird, now I seem to boot into what looks like OM2008.8 Aug 20 10:50:37 dbmoodb: for fun Aug 20 10:50:39 dp: Aug 20 10:50:56 DPThough1: You have an open platform, silly things can be run on it. Aug 20 10:51:21 DPThough1: that said - if anyone gets debian up and suspending well, taking calls, and acting like a phone, ... Aug 20 10:51:35 SpeedEvil, it's still way too huge :P Aug 20 10:51:49 i want to run on the flash, not ab sd Aug 20 10:51:50 Huge isn't of itself a problem - SD are cheap. Aug 20 10:51:58 SpeedEvil: *g* Debian did not strike me like a embedded distribution tough Aug 20 10:52:13 DPThough1: you're entirely missing the point. Aug 20 10:52:33 The current OM hardware is basically not embedded in many senses. Aug 20 10:52:46 As of 10 years ago, it'd be 'powerful desktop'. Aug 20 10:52:51 SpeedEvil: sure, it is done because it can be done Aug 20 10:53:10 SpeedEvil: ROM size is a serious constraint Aug 20 10:53:25 ROM size isn't - SDs are cheap. Aug 20 10:54:31 RAM size is a problem. But I note that I've been running 'normal' slackware+FF+... on a PII300/192 without major problems for a while. Aug 20 10:55:03 On the updated defailt image of the FR, I have IO errors on my sdhc card while formating in ext2, but I can format it on my computer Aug 20 10:55:11 any idea how to fix it? Aug 20 10:55:21 ieatlint: FR still knows my root password though! still not sure why it booted into OM2008.8...is there a daily build of that now? Aug 20 10:55:57 SpeedEvil: jup, i see this on my gta01. But freerunner has some serious ram for a mobile device. The more the better, of course... Aug 20 10:57:19 128M is getting less 'serious' as time goes on. Aug 20 10:57:51 Though of course there isn't a particularly good reason for that. Aug 20 10:58:16 hmm, what's wrong with using buildhost.openmoko.org with 2008.8? Aug 20 10:58:35 Dunno, it was there when I modified the topic a bit. Aug 20 10:59:26 i can see daily images at http://buildhost.openmoko.org/daily/freerunner/200808/ - are they horribly broken in some way? Aug 20 10:59:39 Weiss -- the daily feeds there are updates for OM2007 and are incompatible with 2008.8 Aug 20 10:59:47 SpeedEvil: swap might be a good thing to live with bloat. 128mb active memory is pretty much, but it tends to ge wasted by non active pages. I had this experience with my nokia 770. Flash improved performance and stability very much Aug 20 11:00:22 Infoport: you mean http://buildhost.openmoko.org/daily-feed/? that makes sense. but the daily images are fine? Aug 20 11:00:27 (fsvo of 'fine') Aug 20 11:01:20 Weiss the daily images are builds you can flash, rather than update/upgrade with opkg, but still for OM2007 Aug 20 11:01:51 How do i start application on the Neo through ssh? I remember it was something with export display, but dont know the exact command anymore Aug 20 11:02:16 DISPLAY=:0 command. Aug 20 11:02:33 Infoport: oh, "200808" means "this image was build in August 2008" rather than "this is a 2008.8 ASU image"? Aug 20 11:02:34 KenSentMe: export DISPLAY=:0.0 Aug 20 11:02:41 DPThough1, ok, thanks Aug 20 11:03:14 Weiss exactly. confuses a LOT of people Aug 20 11:03:28 KenSentMe: some apps need more stuff from x environment though. Like dbus sockets. Then it gets complicated. But solutions are documented in the wiki Aug 20 11:03:55 I wonder if this debug board will fit in a Baccarat "Connies" cigar tin? Aug 20 11:04:13 Infoport: got it, thanks Aug 20 11:06:42 damn short USB cables have me stretching around to see everything, doesnt help a back that sits at a computer most of the day, need to find a good USB cable & adapter kit :-( Aug 20 11:10:59 weird...now my FR has a normal boot that seems to be 2008.8? I got this image from buildhost.openmoko.org openmoko-openmoko-qtopia-x11-image-glibc-ipk--20080820-om-gta02.rootfs.jffs2 Aug 20 11:11:29 I thought there were NO new images of 2008.8? what OS is this? Aug 20 11:12:59 seems like now I have a new hybrid build, that is not the SHR either Aug 20 11:13:01 2007.2 + org.openmoko.dev, built daily Aug 20 11:13:37 Infoport: i think 'buildhost' and 'download' are in a state of temporary flux while the migration to the debian-style releases system happens? Aug 20 11:13:51 http://lists.openmoko.org/pipermail/community/2008-August/026491.html Aug 20 11:13:54 rwhitby org.openmoko.dev? right off, it sure LOOKS like 2008.8 in the interface Aug 20 11:14:23 does it have a flower in the background? Aug 20 11:15:29 rwhitby no it has the black with several icons, that looks just like the 2008.8 distro I had setup on SD (minus the apps I had installed) Aug 20 11:17:13 and I better reassemble the case before I know the solder loose on the GPS antenna Aug 20 11:18:49 I still feel like a deserve the tshirt "I void warranties", even if this doesn't have one Aug 20 11:19:21 Infoport: you don't get that shirt until you lift the main shield can on the PCB ... Aug 20 11:20:19 do any of the openmoko phones have wiki? Aug 20 11:20:21 err, wifi Aug 20 11:20:32 i want to build a tool to browse second life from openmoko Aug 20 11:21:01 rwhitby: well I guess I'll wait...maybe once I add a serial port or card reader to my WRT router :D Aug 20 11:21:35 hml: yes they do, although I'm not sure what multimedia support you might need for that Aug 20 11:21:56 ah; the wifi is from the accton 3236aq wlah 802.11b/g ? Aug 20 11:22:12 i'm guessing the smedia glamo 3362 2d/3d acceleration does not have amazing opengl support? :-) Aug 20 11:22:19 no. Aug 20 11:22:25 The glamo accellerator chip is a 2D/3D accellerator. Unfortunately, it has a 7megabytes/s bus to the CPU, which is shared by the SD. Transferring 3.5M/s to the glamo uses 50% CPU. The 3D accel cannot do VGA mode. In most cases, the glamo has not ended up improving performance as was hoped. Aug 20 11:22:27 http://wiki.openmoko.org/images/9/9a/SimpleComponentDiagram.jpg <-- looking at this Aug 20 11:22:53 hmm; this does not seem to compare favorably with th eiphone Aug 20 11:22:55 means.. no gl, but wifi b/g via ar6001 in an accton module, would need to check the exact number Aug 20 11:23:22 hml same with eggs and fridges.. or apples and onions. ;) Aug 20 11:23:26 SpeedEvil: Is the glamo used at ALL? or did OM make a mistake? Aug 20 11:23:52 Shlee it is used for xv, scaling, blitting etc... simple 2d accel, nothing fancy Aug 20 11:24:00 Shlee: I think that it is a "development learning experience" Aug 20 11:24:06 Shlee: it's used. Aug 20 11:24:22 Shlee: but much of the way it's used is to make up for the limited bus bandwidth it imposes. Aug 20 11:24:35 Shlee: and that's sometimes a wash. Aug 20 11:25:00 Shlee: I believe plans are for something different next time (but then, the next one is supposed to improve lots-- much better than stagnant) Aug 20 11:26:28 at the Brewers Guild hops project, I was watering with my watering/mowing/weeding partner for our week and telling him about the phone Aug 20 11:26:31 Next one down the pipe simply pulls glamo, adds a camera, and makes some case changes. Aug 20 11:27:01 he asked me "Aren't you doing a lot of the same stuff you were being paid for, only now for free?" Aug 20 11:27:06 Oh - and a slightly faster processor. Aug 20 11:28:50 answer: yeah, pretty much so, and I'm messing with this, fixing bugs on mine, helping write a backup script (LOL), all by my choice. AND I paid for the opportunity :D Aug 20 11:30:20 Shlee: I'm actually not using it as a phone that much, but it is a GREAT learning experience (not to mention the fame and fortune from answering the few question I have already encountered :-P ) Aug 20 11:30:39 Infoport, comparing it to a job isn't quite right Aug 20 11:31:00 it's like saying "i like to drive" and people assuming you like to sit in gridlock in your car too Aug 20 11:31:14 hobby vs job, not the same :P Aug 20 11:31:50 ieatlint: I *have* been spending way too much time online though. I tell some people I have a new job as an opensource developer on my phone (unpaid) Aug 20 11:32:46 ieatlint: some people also wonder why I would want to crawl under my Karmann Ghia to change my own oil or adjust valves Aug 20 11:32:50 btw. a collegue of me is currently researching about GL on freerunner. He found out that there are many software implementations available. Had anyone tried one of these yet? I just wounder, because GL does not seem to get much attention on openmoko. Is everybody waiting for glamo-gl? Is it even comeing? Aug 20 11:33:05 I want to build some software on 2008.8. Is there some metapackage i can install to have most of the tools and libs i need (like build-essential in Ubuntu)? Aug 20 11:33:17 He could not test performance yet because he has no hardware Aug 20 11:33:27 scary open source projects suck you in and eat your time, and we do it all again just for the fun of it. Its great! Aug 20 11:33:31 KenSentMe: task-openmoko-sdk might be available Aug 20 11:34:01 ieatlint: true about hobbies...but now I have no paid job, and several full-time hobbies XD Aug 20 11:34:38 i'm in the same boat infoport... just trying to use this as experience in both learning and making connections to get a job Aug 20 11:35:07 but i've a second related thing going on... another embedded project Aug 20 11:35:19 heh, is even binary compatible with the FR Aug 20 11:35:24 ieatlint: I told my mom that helping on that script was going to make me famous-- if my name were really Infoport LOL Aug 20 11:36:05 the problem with famous in the geek world is that only a handful are actually famous amongst the general population Aug 20 11:36:23 steve wozniak and bill gates, and to a lesser extent torvalds... that's about it :P Aug 20 11:36:26 ieatlint: of course, this is one software things which I can actually show work to prospective employers (no secret business stuff) Aug 20 11:36:34 (steve jobs isn't a geek, just an asshole) Aug 20 11:37:41 ieatlint: hmm what about Richard Stallman, Phil Zimmerman, or Harold Wellte? ;-) Aug 20 11:37:54 yeah, people don't know who they are Aug 20 11:38:07 oh -- here's another for the list -- reiser Aug 20 11:38:16 people know who he is now, hah Aug 20 11:38:40 I would PAY PAY for a munitions tshirt, but only legacy web pages seem to exist, so the only hope is DIY from the images Aug 20 11:38:53 true about reiser...broke my heart Aug 20 11:39:12 eh, i never liked reiserfs, and the guy is clearly sociopathic Aug 20 11:40:04 ieatlint: yeah, but I couldnt decide if he was guilty, or if he was just a nutty geek with a social disorder Aug 20 11:40:17 his lies were too bizarre :P Aug 20 11:40:25 no one was surprised when he confessed Aug 20 11:40:26 either way hurt, mostly b/c I liked the ReiserFS Aug 20 11:42:03 a meta-package for the build environment would be nice. I installed and set it up, but didnt get the sample application going Aug 20 11:42:39 Infoport, who needs a fulltime job when you have a full time hobbies ? :) Aug 20 11:42:46 a LOT of work before you even tackle using qt, or anything Aug 20 11:43:40 pr0n surfing on the neo is the shit <3 Aug 20 11:44:00 hossi my mom and others sure seem to think I do...just keep applying, and spending my time with a phone that has issues (instead of the phone AT&T gave me LOL) Aug 20 11:44:52 Infoport, it's no sport using a working phone Aug 20 11:45:44 hossi, I only got wifi going on OM2007, but the screen doesnt compare to the flat monitor on my desk :D Aug 20 11:45:46 ieatlint: and 99.9% of those are the ones that have 'sold out'. Aug 20 11:46:17 hossi although it IS portable... Aug 20 11:46:19 ieatlint: Mr Torvalds is probably the only OS person approaching widespread name recongntion. Aug 20 11:46:53 don't want to brag bud I have had e-mail conversation with torvalds :p Aug 20 11:47:01 Me too. Aug 20 11:47:01 Um, Bill Gates might be another ... Aug 20 11:47:19 A couple of lines earlier - 'ieatlint: and 99.9% of those are the ones that have 'sold out'.' Aug 20 11:47:21 I really want a munitions tshirt though...and Zimmerman's ZPhone would be a great app on the NEo Aug 20 11:47:40 Infoport, flash your FR with om2008 and install zecke's feeds Aug 20 11:47:55 Infoport, I even got the gps going Aug 20 11:49:18 Aww. http://www.morphthing.com/morph doesn't have torvalds or gates. Aug 20 11:49:58 SpeedEvil, what were you discussing? Aug 20 11:50:17 does the neo cell phone run on an arm processor? Aug 20 11:50:25 yes Aug 20 11:50:48 hossi: I was discussing 'name' recognition by the public of geeks. Aug 20 11:51:17 Infoport: over gsm ? -- encrypted phoning would be fun Aug 20 11:51:44 VOIP is a problem on FR through the GSM part Aug 20 11:51:47 sparrow, the torvalds? Aug 20 11:52:03 *with Aug 20 11:52:29 dbmoodb encrypted phoning is my goal, although the curve to learn to build apps has been daunting (esp with it changing soon) Aug 20 11:52:42 GPRS has a delay of 1-2 seconds, so is basically useless for 'normal' speech. But push-talk is fine. Aug 20 11:52:53 sure that would be cool. SpeedEvil what about voip on debian ? -- couldn't get the input audio to work ... Aug 20 11:52:58 point-point data is expensive. Aug 20 11:53:10 SpeedEvil yeah that site has Angelina Jolie, but no Parker Posey Aug 20 11:53:16 point-point data is expensive and unavailable on some SIMs, and much lower bandwidth. Aug 20 11:53:30 (CSD) Aug 20 11:53:41 dbmoodb: I don't know, I'm talking about fundamentals. Aug 20 11:54:05 there should be a way to send over voice-connection, so as to not incur data charges Aug 20 11:54:09 dbmoodb: what the hardware can do. VOIP is problematic over other than bluetooth, wifi, or USB Aug 20 11:54:14 Infoport: 'should' Aug 20 11:54:19 Infoport: and indeed there is. Aug 20 11:54:26 i know the hardware can... but the alsa config isn't right for me Aug 20 11:54:32 Infoport: unfortunately, because of technical reasons, you can't easily. Aug 20 11:54:34 SpeedEvil: what ? Aug 20 11:54:42 it should be fine over wifi or usb Aug 20 11:55:05 ah and for easy encryption.. look into ihu Aug 20 11:55:14 Infoport: you end up with hideousnesses like taking data, running a vocoder from it, connecting that to the phone, and a voice recogniser on the other end. Aug 20 11:55:30 dbmoodb: 'other than' IOW - GPRS. I should have been clearer. Aug 20 11:55:50 is there any flashplayer to the neo? Aug 20 11:55:51 Infoport: surprisingly enough that gets you up to 1300 bits/sec. Aug 20 11:55:53 dbmoodb over wifi or other net, you could connect to someone running ZPhone on their computer Aug 20 11:57:12 or a mediaplayer that are compatible with lastfm Aug 20 11:57:15 Infoport: you have to do this as you have no control over the voice path. There are a couple of voice code/decode cylces in the path beteween phones, with errors in between them, and you don't get to pick the specific codec, the network does. Aug 20 11:57:26 well I guess I flash the buildhost distro over the borked OM2007, so now no TangoGPS Aug 20 11:59:20 SpeedEvil I see what you mean-- there are quality problems in the network that may mess up encrypted data Aug 20 11:59:31 Infoport: basically. Aug 20 11:59:48 Infoport: if you're trying to do data over voice, it goes: Aug 20 12:00:31 I think that ZPhone had support for some slow modems, wouldnt that account for a reduced transfer rate due to network quality? Aug 20 12:00:43 Mic -> A/D -> codec -> radio (injecting errors) -> codec -> tower-tower IDSN link -> codec -> radio (with errors) -> codec -> D/A -> speaker Aug 20 12:01:26 Infoport: r.e. images looking like ASU: "Right now we are merging back from *org.openmoko.asu.dev* to Aug 20 12:01:33 *org.openmoko.dev*. Developers will work on this branch." Aug 20 12:01:34 Even if you have control directly over what the radio emits, it doesn't help much, as the errors and the network recieving codec mean that stuff that's not voice-like get trashed. Aug 20 12:02:06 Infoport: that, and there is no 'voice modem' publically available Aug 20 12:02:22 SpeedEvil can't be helped much by redundant slower codec on the ends? Aug 20 12:02:29 Infoport: no Aug 20 12:02:38 SpeedEvil: One may use error-correction, but I think the bitrate of GSM is to low Aug 20 12:02:56 Infoport: the voice codecs are specifically designed to throw away signal that is not voice-like. Aug 20 12:03:10 Infoport: so any 'normal' modem signal gets utterly shredded. Aug 20 12:03:48 well damn...trashed that hope! I guess I'll have to settle for an encrypting plugin for messaging or email from FR Aug 20 12:04:45 you said GPRS has issues too? would (upcoming?) support for 3G help? Aug 20 12:04:58 other than still costing money... Aug 20 12:06:05 a little disappointing, but makes me think of the RFC for sending data by pigeon... Aug 20 12:06:26 3g would of course work better for voip, though many operators forbid such use, and there are still potential QOS issues Aug 20 12:06:27 * rwhitby announces the fso autobuilder and feeds on the lists Aug 20 12:06:41 I Installed python-datetime module, but it's not complete one .there is no time.tzset() available? Aug 20 12:07:14 mjr, would they know it was VOIP if it was encrypted? (maybe the size of streams would be a giveaway?) Aug 20 12:07:30 Infoport/SpeedEvil: Hm... I'm just wondering: Aren't there any analog cryptographic methods with f:{Human frequency} -> {Human frequency}? Maybe those could be modeled somehow? Aug 20 12:08:14 I would note, however, that while SpeedEvil was dissing CSD (point to point data) as expensive, it's not necessarily so. Depends on your provider's degree of reasonableness, of course. Aug 20 12:08:48 can I stream music in the mediaplayer for neo? Aug 20 12:08:49 'provider' and 'reasonable' in the same sentence .... Aug 20 12:08:50 (however apparently you want to run a non-voip speech stream on CSD, if you're to use it, to get rid of all the VOIP overhead, since it _is_ slow) Aug 20 12:09:26 rwhitby, Finnish providers tend to be rather reasonable :) Aug 20 12:10:25 Infoport: SIP uses static ports. They can easyly block them. Blocking RTP would be not so easy for them if they can not inspect the SIP layer. But they don't have to. Just kick SIP. Aug 20 12:11:03 a question about buildhost images-- the only feeds for it are Zecke's feeds? uses the same as 2008.8 (if it had any official yet?) Aug 20 12:11:22 GPRS usually sucks pretty much for voip btw. too much jitter and bad latency in general. That's at least what i heared last time bout gprs Aug 20 12:12:24 freesmartphone.org: 03mickey 07specs * rc46e1135fd91 10/ (24 files in 4 dirs): Aug 20 12:12:24 freesmartphone.org: * add missing 'Incoming' signal for org.freesmartphone.Phone.Call Aug 20 12:12:24 freesmartphone.org: * remove german Umlaute Aug 20 12:12:24 freesmartphone.org: * add warning in autogenerated docs, regenerate everything Aug 20 12:12:33 DPThough1 I dont think I would have to use standard SIP ports, I thinkg ZPhone uses a port it likes, easily changed by configuration Aug 20 12:12:34 DPThough1, yes, we covered that already :) Aug 20 12:12:37 Infoport: zecke's feeds are the only ones that have been announced for om2008.8 Aug 20 12:12:51 what is the boot doing? Aug 20 12:13:28 Infoport: not if you are your own provider :) Aug 20 12:13:38 rwhitby and the buildhost dailies are equiv. to OM2008.8 as far as software is concerned? so no TangoGPS I guess? Aug 20 12:13:44 Infoport, anyway, if you want your encrypted calls, on current hardware (and when you're not in a wifi hotspot) your only choice is to code encrypted voice to go on top of a csd data call, such as these guys do for their phones: http://www.cryptophone.de Aug 20 12:13:47 mjr: guessed so :) Aug 20 12:13:54 Infoport, or you satisfy yourself with push-to-talk gprs Aug 20 12:14:42 Infoport: dunno - there is no equivalent to http://shr.bearstech.com/README for buildhost which specifies exactly what it builds ... Aug 20 12:15:46 mjr push to talk wouldnt be that bad for encrypted calling, a small compromise (of course, nobody I know would have it, unless I could set up their end on their PC) Aug 20 12:17:44 rwhitby hmmm...maybe I should flash in OM2007 again then, and keep 2008.8 on SD (hey I might not break it again so soon) Aug 20 12:18:18 Infoport: since I don't have a working GTA02, I can't advise you Aug 20 12:18:49 how do the ScaredyCat images compare? what is their advantage/focus? Aug 20 12:21:02 anbody know about the buildhost.openmoko.org images, if they are 2008.8 compatible? Aug 20 12:21:14 anybody know about the ScaredyCat images? Aug 20 12:22:10 Looks like ScaredCat is MIA - latest image there is 21 July. Aug 20 12:22:44 @infoport: DO NOT USE buildhost.openmoko.org TO UPGRADE 2008.8 IT WILL NEVER EVER WORK Aug 20 12:22:49 (Channeltopic) Aug 20 12:24:08 Arcnet, no I accidentally flashed it over 2007 instead of flashing 2007 back, and was wondering if I could maintain the buildhost images with 2008.8 packages? Aug 20 12:25:20 Arcnet I understand where 2008.8 stands (even seen the archive mail several times) but I dont know where buildhost fits in/how compatible Aug 20 12:25:49 ah, ok, sorry^^ eerrrr... good question... well, let me think... Aug 20 12:26:20 freesmartphone.org: 03mickey 07specs * ra9746a2e6d78 10/ (3 files in 2 dirs): regenerate docs again, fix clean rules Aug 20 12:27:21 Arcnet it *seems* to have the same basic apps in Installer (as 2008.8 did) but I'm not sure if packages will identify it as a "different OS" Aug 20 12:27:44 packages like Orrery, Gestures, etc Aug 20 12:27:54 Buildhost builds the current development (??) branch of openmoko, while ASU/2008.8 is testing branch if I'm not wrong... so 2008.8 packages should run on 200808xx.. Aug 20 12:27:54 no, I don't think it does, opkg is quite stupid :-D Aug 20 12:28:01 dbmoodb: maybe you had wrong alsa settings loaded? Aug 20 12:28:31 SpeedEvil: debian suspends and takes calls here :) Aug 20 12:29:10 lindi-: what is the batterytime you get with sim inserted? Aug 20 12:30:06 Arcnet so buildhost is basically the more unstable dev version? Aug 20 12:30:39 In case I right: yes :-D Aug 20 12:30:43 +'m Aug 20 12:31:46 Zorkman: haven't tested Aug 20 12:31:56 hm, I just looked at my FR for the first time today - awfully slow with "events/0" and dbus consuming all of the CPU power on 20080819Oo Aug 20 12:32:08 Zorkman: wouldn't it make more sense to measure consumption over some time interval? Aug 20 12:32:21 Arcnet, rwhitby, et al, Good to know! I think that I want OM2007 back then, although buildhost sounds like a fun alternative to 2008.8 on the SD (if "fun" means fixing issues to you) Aug 20 12:32:25 Zorkman: so that i wouldn't have to stop development with the phone for so long time? Aug 20 12:33:04 lindi-:of course, but it could be that you used it as your primary phone, so you had an idea how long it would last before you had to recharge it Aug 20 12:33:05 Well, it runs quite well (SMS work, yeah ^^), th first issue I got is this event/0 thing... Aug 20 12:33:15 freesmartphone.org: 03mickey 07specs * rc0bb78038714 10/ (5 files in 3 dirs): add phone html and xml Aug 20 12:33:50 lindi-: a rational guess is a good enough answer for me :) Aug 20 12:34:17 freesmartphone.org: 03mickey 07specs * rf8234bf0835e 10/ (3 files in 3 dirs): fix typo in ophone/org.freesmartphone.Phone.Call.xml.in Aug 20 12:34:18 it does seem like the buildhost images are a competitor to rwhiby's SHR images (just without as clear a plan for users, but with released images) Aug 20 12:35:19 lindi-: do you guess you could use it as a primary phone for about 20hrs? (if I understand correcly, you can call and sms, suspend works and the phone wakes due to an incomming call or sms ) Aug 20 12:35:51 Zorkman: i am not allowed to use phone gsm at work and i develop with it after work so there's not much time for it to idle :) Aug 20 12:36:10 Zorkman: so, why not just measure current? Aug 20 12:36:20 yeah I'm ok with that Aug 20 12:36:37 (also current during suspend) Aug 20 12:38:08 Zorkman: During the weekend I used it for >24 hours, but it crashed during suspend for about 3 or 4 hours, so: 20 hours are possible (even did some calls, but only about 4 or 5 minutes) Aug 20 12:38:32 Arcnet: also with debian I presume? Aug 20 12:38:41 20080808 ;) Aug 20 12:38:54 Zorkman: remember that suspend power consumpion should only depend on kernel Aug 20 12:39:04 Arcnet: the bug that sound is lost after resume has been fixed then? Aug 20 12:39:10 Zorkman: which one? Aug 20 12:39:17 i reported one against pulseaudio Aug 20 12:39:43 quite frankly I don't know much about the other one; I have encoutered the only the one with pulseaudio Aug 20 12:39:52 Sometimes it worked, sometimes it did not... I can try with 20080819 if you want to ;) Aug 20 12:40:16 no, you don't have to do that, I will flash it myself in a few days I think Aug 20 12:40:56 hmm...buildhost image doesnt tell you it is shutting down, it just goes black Aug 20 12:40:57 I hope the buzzing sound on the other side during gsm call gets fixed soon, then I can use it as my primary phone (gf won't call me on the FR because of this bug :)) Aug 20 12:41:02 oh, alright ^^ Aug 20 12:41:19 Zorkman: did you set mic2 volume to 3? Aug 20 13:03:18 it's like comparing Debian and Fedora Aug 20 13:03:58 I notice fso-testing has cairo and python bindings, is anyone using/trying cairo on the fr ? Aug 20 13:05:00 rwhitby: OK that seems to make sense. that clarifies it some. I guess the "hybrid" part made me think it was (but different hybrids, so not the same) Aug 20 13:05:26 Infoport: shr.bearstech.com has no SHR stuff on it at the moment, it's all FSO only. Aug 20 13:05:49 rwhitby I'm excited about SHR, but havent read as much about it since it is still in progress Aug 20 13:06:44 Seems like Tichy and UMAF are competitors to SHR as front-ends for FSO Aug 20 13:08:10 i wouldn't call it competing Aug 20 13:08:17 tichy is an implementation Aug 20 13:08:32 umaf is first and foremost trying to come up with a UI and usability concept Aug 20 13:08:40 and only the 3rd step is thinking about implementation Aug 20 13:08:48 might as well use tichy as base if it's good Aug 20 13:09:16 it's about bringing something like UIKit to mobile devices Aug 20 13:09:35 [which is a monster goal, i know] Aug 20 13:10:09 hipitihop: cairo works fine on fso. Aug 20 13:12:52 rwhitby, regarding images in http://shr.bearstech.com/fso-testing/images/neo1973/ I'm using things are consistent enough that an earlier image + updates is the same as latest there ? Aug 20 13:13:15 hipitihop: that should be the case, yes. Aug 20 13:13:55 Hmm - except for the post-rootfs stuff that mickey|coffee does in fso-image.bb ... Aug 20 13:14:35 So if new apps are added to the default rootfs, you won't get icons in illume if you install them later. Aug 20 13:15:00 need to find out how to define the categories that illume shows Aug 20 13:15:06 * mickey|coffee looks to raster Aug 20 13:16:24 mickey|coffee: applications.menu Aug 20 13:16:31 whatever that includes Aug 20 13:16:37 xdg menu specs :) Aug 20 13:16:47 ai! Aug 20 13:20:03 * hipitihop goes of to try and get Plone running on his Ubuntu desktop Aug 20 13:20:10 there's idletimeout in frameworkd. What's the other missing piece? Aug 20 13:23:59 much more important is the application's idea of idleness so Aug 20 13:24:13 rwhitby: yes. that's actually a threeliner with fso Aug 20 13:24:28 would that achieve my goal? Aug 20 13:24:43 it would. there's one function missing in dbus Aug 20 13:25:01 atm. you can't get the state of a button Aug 20 13:25:06 you only get notified if it changes Aug 20 13:25:13 so if you start without charger in Aug 20 13:25:20 rwhitby: hmm sounds eithe rlike soemoen else other than e/illume is fiddling with blank times... Aug 20 13:26:39 I s it reasonable to assume the FR (with fso-testing) knows to stop charging when left with usb connected Aug 20 13:26:48 is there I bit of existing code which does stuff like that that I can look at to get the gist? Aug 20 13:26:50 hipitihop: this is kernel code, yes Aug 20 13:27:06 rwhitby: check zhone, it does both checking for key events and setting state to busy Aug 20 13:27:31 both via the appropriate dbus interfaces Aug 20 13:27:46 odevice was in limbo while i was working on ogsmd Aug 20 13:27:49 will pick it up now Aug 20 13:29:17 * rwhitby will print out zhone tomorrow and start absorbing it ... Aug 20 13:34:12 esperegu: no, and from what I understand, the wireless firmware does not support it either. Aug 20 13:34:34 you would need to hack the firmware to do it Aug 20 13:34:51 that sux :-( Aug 20 13:35:19 you can create an ad hock network i believe Aug 20 13:35:31 retracile: thx. gues I will have to wait then to buy something. If you find such a beast, I'd love to hear about it. Aug 20 13:38:42 retracile: I'm hoping that either openmoko or android will fill the gap soon ;-) Aug 20 13:41:48 there is a device that works as a 3g and wifi acess point Aug 20 13:42:04 * rwhitby notes that http://downloads.openmoko.org/repository/Multiverse/orrery_1.1_arm_2008.8.ipk (star chart app) works on fso-testing Aug 20 13:43:21 you could make a Bluetooth->GSM access point out of either GTA01 or GTA02 instead of using wifi ... Aug 20 14:58:02 rockstar, don't think it's there, but he was given a freerunner with the intentions of doing it I believe Aug 20 14:58:15 it an OE bitbake recipe, which was created as a single point of coordination for a list of packages that make sense to be in a feed for an openmoko phone Aug 20 14:58:20 Is there a bug known where you can't read your SMS messages caused by a seg-fault of openmoko-messages or libgsmd-tool respectively? Aug 20 19:29:10 Infoport: here in Belgium that would be a load of crap, but don't know what is normal there Aug 20 19:29:25 they want me to register the FR's IEMI before they send me a SIM that doesnt short against the tab on holder Aug 20 19:29:56 right now the rep is trying to lookup the Openmoko :-/ Aug 20 19:29:58 is there a reason that you don't want to give them that number? Aug 20 19:30:22 Infoport: I'm not sure about your specific situation, but I know that the AT&T call center people are idiots. They told me my phone wouldn't work because it doesn't have the "AT&T software" on it Aug 20 19:30:33 hehehe Aug 20 19:30:55 They also asked for my IEMI number, but I just gave it to them Aug 20 19:31:01 why don't you just ask them why they need that number? Aug 20 19:31:03 but I had a SIM card of my own Aug 20 19:31:23 I thought the last peice of software AT&T were allowed to sell was UNIX before the big break-up(-= Aug 20 19:32:59 Well, I think they were referring to whatever proprietary crap it is that they put on their phones, although I'm pretty sure they mostly just skin the existing OS on most of them Aug 20 19:33:25 Zorkman not really, except that her advice is that I would NOT be able to switch back and forth with the LG phone I got with my service (my "backup" phone), even though I have swapped them some Aug 20 19:33:32 I plan to take my FreeRunner to AT&T and ask them why I shouldn't get my SIM from T-Mobile. Then go to T-Mobile and ask the same thing. Aug 20 19:33:38 that's not true about the phone swapping Aug 20 19:33:43 I swap mine all the time Aug 20 19:33:44 Hi, are daily builds are still acrive for both 2007.2 and 2008.8, e.g.: http://buildhost.openmoko.org/daily/freerunner/200808/20080820/ ? Aug 20 19:34:31 johngay: may as well just go with t-mo ... I've never had issues with my weird imported phones Aug 20 19:34:35 pop the sim in and go Aug 20 19:34:41 ok, now AT&T is going to mail me one...I think I will take the 71234O SIM to a local store and have it activated, and then put the one the send into "spares" (I bought two off ebay for $1.99/ea) Aug 20 19:34:48 LionKMP: it's true for 2007.2, but the 2008.8 images you are referring to are not really 2008.8 images, they're some sort of test images, but not = 2008.8 Aug 20 19:34:50 or popping thesim into other phones in general ("crap my battery died and I need to make a call...") Aug 20 19:35:21 Tell AT&T if they don't want your service, then you want to cancel your contract and will be suing if they try to charge a fee since they've broken their contract with you. Aug 20 19:35:29 Zorkman: here in belgium you can stick any sim in about any cellphone you want and it works Aug 20 19:35:41 Zorkman: yes, if we call 2008.8 the one specific official release. But are these -qtopia- files are a continued development of that official 2008.8? Aug 20 19:35:58 the rep stopped saying it wouldnt swap, and just said they didnt warranty that it would work with mine Aug 20 19:36:04 johngay: good luck with that... although it would make for interesting case law Aug 20 19:36:27 Worked for me against Sprint. Aug 20 19:36:54 crap, i cant turn my freerunner on anymore Aug 20 19:37:04 Don't forget, cancelation fee's are being outlawed. Aug 20 19:37:19 LionKMP: it's a bit difficult to explain... they look like 2008.8 and are indeed qtopia-on-x-based, but some OM representatives said they are not = 2008.8, meaning that if you install 2008.8 and opk upgrade them with zeckes feeds you will get something different Aug 20 19:37:31 fish_: that happend to me also, remove the battery Aug 20 19:37:38 Infoport: I bought my sim off of ebay, had the customer service rep register my SIM card and switch over my IEMI number, and my old LG CG225 will still work with the new SIM Aug 20 19:38:03 plus, the old phone will still turn on with the old sim card, but I can't make calls Aug 20 19:38:04 Zorkman: ok, thanks. :) Aug 20 19:38:18 with the new SIM, I can make calls with either phone Aug 20 19:38:44 looks like the carriers in america have you all by the bals Aug 20 19:38:57 meh, they're just idiots Aug 20 19:39:18 Zorkman: nah t-mo is ok ... when I got service I gave them $15 for a SIM and off I went happily ever after Aug 20 19:39:19 the customer service people are poorly trained and only know what's on their scripts Aug 20 19:39:49 amusing that t-mobile is the least evil of the american providers Aug 20 19:39:52 if i understand correctly you also have to pay to recieve an sms in the US, correct? Aug 20 19:39:57 yes Aug 20 19:40:00 yup Aug 20 19:40:06 how much (for example?) Aug 20 19:40:10 And to receive calls Aug 20 19:40:11 and do you also have to pay to send one? Aug 20 19:40:15 Well, it depends on your plan Aug 20 19:40:18 Yes Aug 20 19:40:18 usually $0.10 to $.25 depending on who you are with Aug 20 19:40:28 most of the time they have a package where you get N messages per month Aug 20 19:40:30 unless you get some bundle package blah blah Aug 20 19:40:31 I got my phone with these applications: "Contacts, Dialer, Messages, Terminal, Take Screenshot"... how do I get the rest? Aug 20 19:40:32 I have unlimited text messages though. $20/mo Aug 20 19:40:54 but both sending and receiving counts against that number Aug 20 19:41:25 it makes sense, since america is so big. In europe you really have to pay a lot when roaming or recieving calls abroad Aug 20 19:41:39 bah there was an issue with the altel->t-mobile sms gateway or something and my friends with alltel cost me $$ because every SMS they sent me came three times Aug 20 19:42:05 Yeah, one of the nice things about here is that roaming charges within the US have mostly disappeared Aug 20 19:42:13 Zorkman: nope, it looks completly dead Aug 20 19:42:14 there was a belgian guy who lent his phone to a friend, he went to spain and used internet on that phone for 3 days and had a bill of 18.888 EURO :) Aug 20 19:42:22 with and without battery Aug 20 19:42:33 hm if I type "opkg install http://www.tangogps.org/downloads/tangogps_0.9.2-r1_armv4t.ipk" it starts to download the file, but in the end gives and md5 error, I've tried it multiple times, also tried to download the file first on my normal pc, then put it on the neo through usb, then opkg install ended up in the same error, any ideas? :) Aug 20 19:42:41 haha... that's like the woman who left her iPhone on while on a cruise in the atlantic Aug 20 19:42:57 it kept downloading her e-mail when she was near islands Aug 20 19:43:08 fish_: insert the battery, connect usb cable (directly to the pc, not through hub) and wait a few hours, then try again Aug 20 19:43:15 even though the phone was "turned off" (actually in standby) Aug 20 19:43:34 Pjj: try to wget it first and then installing it from your freerunner Aug 20 19:43:55 hehe, didn't hear that story jwaters42 Aug 20 19:44:19 http://www.newsday.com/business/ny-bzappl0908,0,2929341.story?coll=ny_home_rail_headlines Aug 20 19:44:24 it was a guy and his family Aug 20 19:44:39 and in europe, actually Aug 20 19:44:41 the price of the mobile internet in spain (when living in belgium) was 9.68 euro/MB Aug 20 19:44:49 so I was a little off on the details... ;) Aug 20 19:45:05 same error Zorkman " * Package tangogps md5sum mismatch. Either the opkg or the package index are corrupt. Try 'opkg update' " Aug 20 19:45:06 hehe, I still win with 18.888 euro :) Aug 20 19:45:10 yeah Aug 20 19:45:24 Pjj: and have you tried "opkg install tangoGPS" ? Aug 20 19:45:26 I am going to take my eBay SIM model 71234 O 4022 to the store and register it, and put the one they send into "spares". I think it will work *fine* (cust svc doesnt know crap) Aug 20 19:45:53 no trying that now Aug 20 19:46:27 my SIM from ebay is also an AT&T 3G "Blazing Fireball" SIM Aug 20 19:46:53 I just wanted them to provide me with a free working SIM Aug 20 19:47:00 Zorkman: well afaik it should be able to run without battery at all Aug 20 19:47:08 * ssweeny thought there were issues with 3G SIMs Aug 20 19:47:08 that doesnt short out against tab Aug 20 19:47:40 fish_: no it can't (not at the moment at least) Aug 20 19:47:57 although I did find a use for *dead* SIMs-- my LG phone wont do sh*t without a SIM, but a dead one (while active is in FR) lets me use camera, etc off LG phone Aug 20 19:48:00 Zorkman: mh okay.. than i'll try later.. Aug 20 19:48:06 fish_: it needs to boot a little bit, before the power managment kicks in and sucks in power Aug 20 19:48:24 Infoport: yup, that's what I'm doing with the old one Aug 20 19:48:28 there are tons of mails about it on the mailing list and on the wiki there is also info available Aug 20 19:48:36 Zorkman: i hope it doesnt need to 'boot a little bit' to load the battery ;) Aug 20 19:48:50 doesn't work either Zorkman "opkg install tangoGPS An error ocurred, return value: 2." Aug 20 19:49:04 ok, off to AT&T store for activation! (rather there than over Nation call center, slow silly response) Aug 20 19:49:42 All call centre people are stupid. Aug 20 19:50:03 good luck infoport, i'm sure it'll work Aug 20 19:50:21 I work at a call center johngay :> Aug 20 19:50:28 HP told me that their Workstations don't have MAC addresses because they're Windows-based, not Macintosh. Aug 20 19:50:50 lol Aug 20 19:50:55 :D Aug 20 19:51:04 oooh, thats fun... first line support Im guessing there. Aug 20 19:51:34 After I explained what a MAC address was, their top technician came on the line to tell me I had to finish installing Windows so it could create the MAC addresses for the network ports. Aug 20 19:51:38 but any idea about the error while trying to install tangogps? (it always gives the error) Aug 20 19:52:06 that will teach u for using Windows Aug 20 19:52:33 I just hung up, burned a Linux bootCD and used ifconfig -a. Aug 20 19:52:54 It's my employer who bought the Windows workstations from HP. Aug 20 19:54:00 GNU/Linux is always better because it respects your freedom :) Aug 20 19:54:48 The Prod-Dev guys are re-compiling all your software products for Linux because they refuse to support Vista. Aug 20 19:55:17 s/your/our Aug 20 19:55:52 Right now we pay $90 per server and workstation from XP downgrade. Aug 20 19:56:34 i imagine Vista resulted in a lot of new Linux users, or OS X users Aug 20 19:59:20 please use the term GNU/Linux when talking about the whole OS zedstar_ :) Aug 20 20:00:10 <[Rui]> Software status should change to: if you want stable, go qtopia ;) Aug 20 20:00:23 <[Rui]> hi all Aug 20 20:00:32 No, It's GNU/Linux/X window/BSD/QT/Gnome/KDE/Adobe/etc/etc/etc Aug 20 20:01:17 and FreeBSD/OSX Aug 20 20:01:36 * zedstar_ pinches Pjj Aug 20 20:01:48 <[Rui]> johngay: that would be true if the reason for using GNU over the Linux kernel (yes, the slash is mathmatical over) were simply because it included GNU software Aug 20 20:02:01 Considering it's the main reason Dell started offering Ubuntu when Vista came out. Aug 20 20:02:31 <[Rui]> but the system is GNU and Linux is one of its kernels (the best one so far, IMHO). Aug 20 20:02:37 <[Rui]> I anyway, back on topic Aug 20 20:02:50 <[Rui]> has anytone here tried rastarman's latest snapshot? Aug 20 20:02:53 Gnome actually stands for GNU Object Model Envoirment so if you countup gnome + all other gnu packages it's way bigger then just the kernel Aug 20 20:02:59 :P Aug 20 20:03:00 But not everything else is covered by GNU. Aug 20 20:03:18 <[Rui]> I keep hearing people call it "stable" but it definitely isn't much "more" than ASU :] Aug 20 20:03:28 I.E. X-window, BSD and Adobe Aug 20 20:03:40 <[Rui]> am I doing something wrong? I'm pretty tired of plain qtopia :| Aug 20 20:03:46 johngay: adobe? Aug 20 20:04:14 Check the copyright notices on the fonts included in X-Window. Aug 20 20:04:15 yeah adobe? Aug 20 20:04:31 Rui even bored with it? Aug 20 20:04:39 Pjj: have they actually made much free software? Aug 20 20:05:03 who do you mean with 'they' lindi- ? Aug 20 20:05:04 <[Rui]> slaxxin: well, since I've been waiting for OpenMoko for two years, yeah... I'm willing to try all until I find one that suits me fine :) Aug 20 20:05:11 Pjj: adobe the company Aug 20 20:05:16 the flash spec is free Aug 20 20:05:19 none that I know of Aug 20 20:05:20 so go get the latest 2008.8 an WORK ON IT!!! Aug 20 20:05:29 or will be Aug 20 20:05:30 :) Aug 20 20:05:39 pdf as well Aug 20 20:05:40 ssweeny: i don't know what free specs are :) Aug 20 20:05:48 <[Rui]> slaxxin: I also need a working phone, so I can only make experiences at weekends :) Aug 20 20:05:49 I don't think the latest versions are, the people in #gnash would love if it would be open Aug 20 20:05:57 anyone can implement flash or pdf Aug 20 20:06:02 ssweeny: but we could discuss definiton of free specifications, would be interesting :) Aug 20 20:06:17 Plus most installs of cups includes ghostprint (-= Aug 20 20:06:19 <[Rui]> slaxxin: one hting maybe you can help me is setting up an amd64 Ubunto Heron build environment Aug 20 20:06:43 arr, is there mpd somewhere on the ipkg repositories? Aug 20 20:06:44 <[Rui]> slaxxin: last time I tried MokoMakefile it took ages and always failed :( Aug 20 20:06:44 or an mpd ipkg? Aug 20 20:06:44 swich out the sim with a spare phone when u need a good ohone Aug 20 20:07:01 adobe's model is anyone can make a reader, but we'll make the best writer Aug 20 20:07:15 <[Rui]> slaxxin: I don't want to use proprietary cell phones anymore. there's no more excuse :D Aug 20 20:07:32 johngay: you mean ghostscript? Aug 20 20:07:33 i guess debian wont work anywhere but on the sdcard right? Aug 20 20:07:33 <[Rui]> slaxxin: I also have a huge problem, dfu-util doesn't work fine on big endian machines :( Aug 20 20:07:41 <[Rui]> slaxxin: heard so Aug 20 20:07:56 ssweeny: at the moment it requires more space than 256M to be useful for development Aug 20 20:08:25 ssweeny: i think you could have root on nfs but that would not be too mobile Aug 20 20:08:25 so find a poc comp machine an put slackware on it an go on Aug 20 20:08:47 slaxxin: perhaps not, if some partitions were mounted on sd and the root filesystem were mounted on flash Aug 20 20:08:54 Yea. So that's an Aladin license as well. Aug 20 20:08:57 did u try using ./dfu blablabla? Aug 20 20:09:05 have root on NFS and use the cell data connection to mount it Aug 20 20:09:09 ;-) Aug 20 20:09:27 Can't do much if you stick with pure GNU stuff (-= Aug 20 20:09:29 256M flash + 128M ram should be about enough too Aug 20 20:09:31 or did u use dfu blabla Aug 20 20:10:38 damn small linux is based on debian, and it occupies 50Mb if i'm not wrong Aug 20 20:10:57 mmaestri: there's emdebian too Aug 20 20:11:24 <[Rui]> johngay: you seem to be very misinformed, and to me you're spamming this channel. will you move it elsewhere, please? Aug 20 20:11:29 mmontour: but you might as well use OE if you go to that route :) Aug 20 20:11:59 lindi-: guess you're talking to me :p Aug 20 20:12:05 argh, yes Aug 20 20:12:15 yes, of course OE will make it Aug 20 20:12:46 <[Rui]> btw, OE's Linux doesn't yet have the tickless patch, right? Aug 20 20:12:51 mmaestri: and using OE + debian chroot is not impossible either Aug 20 20:12:53 i'm not a debian zealot anyway, i just want it working Aug 20 20:12:58 <[Rui]> is anyone working on rebasing on a more recent Linux? Aug 20 20:14:42 mmaestri: i want debian mostly since it's free software and i'm familiar with how i can create and modify packages Aug 20 20:14:46 <[Rui]> are the mailing lists working, or do they need human intervention for subscription requests? Aug 20 20:15:47 Zorkman: do you really think i need to 'wait a few hours'? Aug 20 20:17:14 fish_: No idea, I had the same problem as you three times: two times removing the battery worked, one time i plugged it in and waited and after 50min the phone turned itself on (very x-files like :)) and when i checked, the battery was 80% full Aug 20 20:17:24 but what i told you is what is suggested by the ML/wiki Aug 20 20:17:40 well.. than i'll have to wait.. Aug 20 20:18:02 but that really sucks and is an issue which should be adresed sometime Aug 20 20:18:24 or maybe someone else know more about it, I suggest you also search the community mailinglist and the wiki Aug 20 20:19:20 can anyone help me to start the illume keyboard? details of my problem are at http://lists.openmoko.org/pipermail/community/2008-August/027245.html Aug 20 20:22:27 <[Rui]> forget that mailing list question, I had a bad procmail rule Aug 20 20:24:35 fish maybe u have another nokia phone laying around with the same battery by chance? Aug 20 20:24:54 YEA! I visited an AT&T store, they had the 71234O SIMs, activated it, and it seems to register automatically wit the network each boot!! Aug 20 20:25:05 nice one Infoport Aug 20 20:25:07 yay told u so Aug 20 20:25:18 fish_: there is a list of compatible batteries on the wiki Aug 20 20:26:21 Great, Infoport. What are the details of your plan? I'm still shopping around. Aug 20 20:26:38 people in store recognized me as the person with "that other phone" (although they didnt act weird about it all like the call center) Aug 20 20:26:47 i have a real hard time telling people that is the problem because they just cant seem to believe new parts can be defective on 1 phone design an not on another Aug 20 20:27:23 pass it on Aug 20 20:27:50 johngay currently I have the cheapest plan, with 450min anytime, and 5000 nights&weekends, plus 200 SMS message, and $1.99/mo for detailed billing, so I can see what my phone usage would be on a normal plan (not prepaid starter phone) Aug 20 20:27:52 need to put that on freerunnerHQ Aug 20 20:28:43 slaxxin oh I believed you-- I switched away from a 71234D sim that it started with, and *thought* this was working, just slowly Aug 20 20:29:11 slaxxin I am going to edit the entry I put on this page http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Carriers/ATT Aug 20 20:30:09 i editited it an it got removed Aug 20 20:31:32 damn lucky that sim didnt fry somebodys freerunner Aug 20 20:33:53 So that was $40 a month? 1 or 2 year contract? Aug 20 20:35:06 anyone else got problems compiling python-vas ? Aug 20 20:35:34 johngay yes $40/mo plus the text fee, plus $1.99 for detailed billing, and I can change it. I got a two year plan (rather than none) so I could get a free/cheap backup phone with cam (not benefit to stay with them for years and not get a free phone) Aug 20 20:35:47 i get the same error no matter if i want to compile asu or fso Aug 20 20:36:44 I kinda like the look of the $20 unlimited data with no contract. Anyone using that? Anyone know what T-Mob has similar? Aug 20 20:36:45 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQlzX7EyIwU <- I wish my freerunner experience was like this Aug 20 20:37:20 Hi...Just received my Freerunner but I'm not sure to understand what distribution is the good one to work with (in both user & developer point of view) ... Aug 20 20:37:52 w_erase: how experienced are you with gnu/linux? Aug 20 20:38:03 sure ... Aug 20 20:47:25 Mmm, runing dpkg have fixed the pb Aug 20 20:47:51 TeXitoi: then scp apt* to freerunner and run "gdb --args apt-get install" and then "run" Aug 20 20:48:07 <|Marco|> I think I've done somthing wrong, but I don't know what.. the touche screen isn't working anymore.. but aux/power is working Aug 20 20:50:03 now that it works, doing that is useless, no? Aug 20 20:51:46 TeXitoi: well, it'll be a useful exercise Aug 20 20:52:04 TeXitoi: you can set break points in apt-get and step line-by-line :) Aug 20 20:52:35 (you might want to start with something simpler than apt-get though, it's C++....) Aug 20 20:53:22 lindi-: I have already used gdb ;-) Aug 20 20:53:36 TeXitoi: yep but have you used qemubuilder? ;) Aug 20 20:53:45 not yet Aug 20 21:07:58 git ls-remote git://git.freesmartphone.org/eventd.git master failed with signal 128 Aug 20 21:08:40 anybody has any idea ? Aug 20 21:08:46 while trying to build fso Aug 20 21:09:08 <[Rui]> if I'm not a hardcore developer but I still want to build from scratch in order to help things, do you advise ASU testing or ASU stable? Aug 20 21:09:19 <[Rui]> pardon, ASU Devel or ASU testing? Aug 20 21:11:24 kinneh: i saw email about that today i think Aug 20 21:11:38 <[Rui]> well... let's go all the way then... dev it goes Aug 20 21:14:39 <[Rui]> make setup'ing Aug 20 21:17:43 I'm never asked for PIN when booting om2008.8 (and I get No network registered when trying to dial . any idea ? Aug 20 21:26:26 Doh! OM2007 doesnt include pushd (or popd I guess) good for going into a dir, then popping it off the stack and returning to where you were Aug 20 21:26:46 <[Rui]> w_erase: known bug Aug 20 21:27:23 <[Rui]> w_erase: it's trying to scan all files in the slow sd card and something goes to hell meanwhile Aug 20 21:27:33 <[Rui]> OK. Aug 20 21:27:43 <[Rui]> I'm now undecided on which way should I go... Aug 20 21:27:59 <[Rui]> make openmoko-devel-image OR make openmoko-qtopia-x11-image ?? Aug 20 21:29:02 I'd go with qtopia, but then I like QT and KDE. Aug 20 21:29:25 Infoport: good thing is you can install software :) Aug 20 21:29:55 <[Rui]> johngay: that's not the qtopia image, that's the ASU (according to the instructions here: http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/MokoMakefile section Building Aug 20 21:29:59 lindi- true, but I'll probably just do without pushd/popd and concentrate on other stuff Aug 20 21:30:14 Infoport: debian has 'em :) Aug 20 21:30:20 <[Rui]> I don't want the framebuffer qt only crap. it's the most stable, but it has no appeal to me :) Aug 20 21:30:45 <[Rui]> I'm not saying qt is crap, mind you! Aug 20 21:31:24 <[Rui]> it says it's quite a lengthy task, so I'm pretty much ready to leave it doing and then going to bed Aug 20 21:31:45 <[Rui]> but if it's taking about 12GB from my disk, I'd prefer not to make it again :) Aug 20 21:31:48 AFAIK, qt on FreeRunner is x based, not frame-buffer. Aug 20 21:32:29 <[Rui]> johngay: you have both Aug 20 21:32:46 <[Rui]> johngay: and the qtopia framebuffer thingie is the most stable I tried so far :) Aug 20 21:33:05 <[Rui]> johngay: it's just that the difference between these two options isn't all that clear to me... Aug 20 21:33:26 <[Rui]> what will ASU build, ASU Om2008.8 ??? I don't want that! Aug 20 21:33:43 well what do u want? Aug 20 21:33:46 Ah. I'm still trying to see where this is going. Aug 20 21:34:02 u know what i want? Aug 20 21:34:21 thats what i thought Aug 20 21:34:25 <[Rui]> slaxxin: I don't want Om2008.8, that's quite bad :) I want what's comming Aug 20 21:34:35 shr? Aug 20 21:34:43 <[Rui]> make openmoko-devel-image Aug 20 21:34:43 <[Rui]> (or use "make openmoko-qtopia-x11-image" if you're building the ASU) Aug 20 21:34:50 <[Rui]> isn't clear to me which I should go with Aug 20 21:35:33 yea i been using 2008.8 updated an it is a struggle Aug 20 21:35:49 lindi- yeah I use pushd/popd on many Linux distros, inc Ubuntu (debian based) & Fedora Aug 20 21:35:55 i put debian on the sdcard last night Aug 20 21:36:16 lindi- I'm also one of those people that opens many browser tabs, then goes and reads them all, closing them after use Aug 20 21:36:22 i like 2008.8 with updates. apart from the 'screen unblancing does not work, though ssh logins work' problem Aug 20 21:36:22 <[Rui]> slaxxin: if you install 2008.8, you can't update (or you'll break it) Aug 20 21:36:23 freesmartphone.org: 03mickey 07python-helpers * rd1f320604747 10/mickeydbus/mdbus: mdbus: increase client timeout for long-standing operations Aug 20 21:36:52 slaxxin: i did that too. it looks good. but i had very limitel functionality? Aug 20 21:36:55 honestly i was thinking of gettin a local friend to roll up some slackware an try that Aug 20 21:37:10 slaxxin: only dialer, contacts, sms, and 'where am i' Aug 20 21:37:44 i almost have wifi working i think Aug 20 21:37:52 why not gentoo on your phone, compile natively every update :) Aug 20 21:37:59 wifi works for me on 2008.8 Aug 20 21:38:05 though only via the settings menu Aug 20 21:38:18 atleast it asks for a pass for wifi if i click on my wap Aug 20 21:38:25 not with the app that shows all the spots (perhaps it is not supposed to be able to select them from the map) Aug 20 21:38:39 i had to install the full querty keyboard to be able to type in my wpa key :) Aug 20 21:38:53 what no <> Aug 20 21:42:27 can you *not* edit .desktop files to move a default app in the menus? I change kobodeluxe to Type=Games; and restarted, but still in Applications Aug 20 21:42:37 restarted xserver Aug 20 21:43:23 I also wouldnt mind removing the first several from Applications, ie. Calculator, Contacts, Dates, & Dialer Aug 20 21:44:30 oh, should be Category=Games (but is already *IS*, just wont move out of Apps) Aug 20 21:45:22 does Category=GTK put something in Applications? Aug 20 21:46:30 I just got one of the miniature webcams that I ordered Aug 20 21:46:44 Cracked it open and the circuit board is about 2x3cm Aug 20 21:47:04 that includes the lens Aug 20 21:47:10 how deep? Aug 20 21:47:36 and what chipset? Aug 20 21:47:46 TankC are you going to set it up on your Neo? Aug 20 21:48:02 the lens sticks out about 1.5cm on the top side, the circutry on the bottom sticks out maybe 0.5cm Aug 20 21:48:16 Infoport: It depends, I ordered another mini webcam and I want to see how that compares to this one Aug 20 21:48:44 It uses the gspcav1 driver in linux Aug 20 21:48:52 tested it on my main box, worked like a charm Aug 20 21:48:54 and it's USB 1.1 Aug 20 21:48:59 I like the idea of just plugging in a web cam on the USB for photo's rather than a permenantly mounted one. Aug 20 21:49:21 TankC: do you already have gspca compiled? Aug 20 21:49:24 TankC sounds like a worthy effort -- with a cam you can scan barcodes and stuff even (there is some webcam-barcode project out there) Aug 20 21:49:38 UndrWater: Not for the FR Aug 20 21:50:11 TankC definitely put up a page on the wiki with your results! were they expensive? Aug 20 21:50:27 i imagine a camera mounted inside a small ball that rotates within the lanyard hole Aug 20 21:50:30 Infoport: indeed, this camera only takes VGA pics and has a really crappy image.. The other I ordered has a 1.3MP rez Aug 20 21:50:42 Infoport: Both were in the $15 range Aug 20 21:50:47 :-O Aug 20 21:50:50 nice!! Aug 20 21:51:00 found them on amazon Aug 20 21:51:09 TankC really cool-- I'll probably want to follow your lead :D Aug 20 21:51:27 I'll do some experimenting and create a wiki page if I do something productive Aug 20 21:52:10 I was thinking, if I do manage to mount it inside the FR, the only spot available is under the back cover next to the battery, right above the sim card Aug 20 21:52:12 TankC, UndrWater, there is *some* space available under the back lid next to the battery, but removable sounds nice too (like my external GPS antenna) Aug 20 21:52:35 That also has the connivance of being right next to the USB port Aug 20 21:52:40 TankC beat me to the thought! Aug 20 21:52:46 :) Aug 20 21:53:00 convenience* Aug 20 21:53:19 I also imagine a docking solution, with maybe a small USB hub and power Aug 20 21:54:06 Let me take a pic of this circuit board and show you what I'm looking at Aug 20 21:54:12 grr... I wish these default-installed apps would move when I edit their .desktop file and restart :-( Aug 20 21:55:05 TankC with a small dock, those plug-able devices could be ready at home, or attached to a small dock and carried Aug 20 21:57:42 ok, got kobodeluxe to move menus-- it cant be Category=Games, but instead "Game" (no 's') Aug 20 21:58:56 Infoport: debian? Aug 20 21:59:59 Undrwater, no I am playing with OM2007 again, after borking it somehow, and the new image included much more default apps, like games Aug 20 22:00:53 Undrwater, but certain apps just dont want to move, like Contacts, Dialer, Date, Messages (I don't know where 'GTK' puts them, but still in Applications) Aug 20 22:02:06 I wish I could make them only in PIM, so Applications can be tidier. Aug 20 22:03:28 I put Calculator and Take Screenshot in Utility, but Calculator still shows up in PIM & Appl. Aug 20 22:04:40 http://64.203.117.66/~ryan/FR_CAM.JPG Aug 20 22:05:07 doesn't work TankC Aug 20 22:05:09 woops... Aug 20 22:05:22 yeah, didnt load for me either Aug 20 22:05:25 http://64.203.117.66:8082/~ryan/FR_CAM.JPG Aug 20 22:05:28 try that Aug 20 22:05:37 loading Aug 20 22:06:31 TankC cool! It will be interesting to see the other cam's size Aug 20 22:07:29 Indeed Aug 20 22:07:56 TankC you *may* be able to get it in case but I think you would have to remove some plastic for the width Aug 20 22:08:18 Yeah, I would Aug 20 22:08:29 I don't know how much freedom I have with the FR's board either Aug 20 22:08:33 TankC I'm looking at the space beside my battery, and I think that the cam is a little over 1 cm wide Aug 20 22:08:42 Is that the low-res or hi-res camera? Aug 20 22:08:49 low res Aug 20 22:09:24 TankC still, and outside-solution would be great..mayber something that straps onto the case and can be stored Aug 20 22:10:05 Maybe something that clips into the hole? Aug 20 22:10:25 TankC or maybe this would be a candidate for case mods (a new back cover!) LOTS of potential for stuff then Aug 20 22:10:50 new back cover would be best, however it would take a LOT of time on my end... Aug 20 22:10:55 Can be mounted either way. Aug 20 22:11:20 I'd have to modify the CAD drawing, cut out a die, and play with some plastic injection Aug 20 22:11:24 TankC and new back cover would point backward, unless it clipped on and stuck out to the side... Aug 20 22:11:37 (I have access to all of those resources, it would just take forever) Aug 20 22:12:14 TankC I think that a new back cover will be done for MANY people, and maybe a clip-on method could be generalized (or a thick backcase you could melt-and-glue) Aug 20 22:13:13 TankC I wanted to look at CAD files, but all my free OSS used other formats :-( Aug 20 22:13:16 Easiest way would just be make a new case for the webcam that has a side usb plug Aug 20 22:13:27 what format are the cad files in? Aug 20 22:14:05 TankC in IGES_STEP and ProE Aug 20 22:15:06 hmm... I need to wrap this up and get to my Brewers Guild monthly meeting :-D Aug 20 22:15:35 Blender has IGES import capability Aug 20 22:15:43 will let you view the model at least Aug 20 22:15:56 http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/File_format_list Aug 20 22:15:56 Brew a pint for me, Infoport (; Aug 20 22:16:06 me too! Aug 20 22:16:19 * Zorkman too Aug 20 22:17:06 do you export Infoport? :) Aug 20 22:17:13 :-D tonight is either Mead talks or How to Brew Better from the senior brewers (I'm more novice but learning, and part of hops co-op project) Aug 20 22:17:34 I wouldn't mind learning how to make my own brews Aug 20 22:17:49 I've had Mead. Very sweet. Aug 20 22:17:50 Do you have a rig set up at your house? Aug 20 22:18:26 TankC not too hard, esp if you use malt extracts instead of whole grain. I'm not yet brewing whole grain, which needs a bigger setup and cooling method Aug 20 22:19:18 you can brew from extracts & hops with a big pot to cook in, and a 5-gal carboy (glass water bottle) Aug 20 22:19:59 from extracts you only have to cook about 1 gal, and the extra water cools it enough for the yeast Aug 20 22:22:40 bye all! Aug 20 22:27:20 morning all Aug 20 22:29:05 ouch! my keyboard doesnt install on OM2007 now. I want to imnpress my friends with FR, but I get an error "Package matchbox-keyboard-inputmethod md5sum mismatch. Either the opkg or the package index are corrupt. Try 'opkg update'." Aug 20 22:29:21 hi everybody Aug 20 22:29:27 same with the other matchbox-keyboard packages Aug 20 22:29:40 though matchbox worked before Aug 20 22:29:51 i connected my neo to pc but i can't see a /dev/mmcblk1 Aug 20 22:30:06 what module should i modprobe please ? Aug 20 22:30:23 for partitionning the microSD card Aug 20 22:33:59 grr...keyboard install errors seem to be b/c it is available in daily-feed Aug 20 22:34:38 can i directly fdisk a SDcard plugged in the neo? Aug 20 22:35:35 yes Aug 20 22:35:48 lambda that's how I went, aince Ubunto wanted to use nodev and automount them Aug 20 22:35:52 Hmm, looks like BRL-CAD has native IGES support Aug 20 22:36:16 http://brlcad.org/ Aug 20 22:36:32 i mean perforlm a fdiskl from the pc the neo is plugged in Aug 20 22:36:44 *performing Aug 20 22:36:49 ok, gotta run! Aug 20 22:37:01 is it possible Aug 20 22:37:06 well, you'd need to share it over the network to the pc using network block device or something Aug 20 22:37:39 but you know, your problem sounds eerily like the card isn't detected to share Aug 20 22:37:50 yes Aug 20 22:38:02 burrp Aug 20 22:38:03 only a ATM modem is detected Aug 20 22:38:18 i have a linux2.6.24-1 debian Aug 20 22:38:53 wait, you expect to see the card device on your host pc? Aug 20 22:39:23 's not how it goes (per default, anyway) Aug 20 22:40:10 generally you ssh over to the neo and do your stuff there Aug 20 22:40:41 rwhitby, about yet ? Aug 20 22:42:58 tangogps is crashing when i try to download maps Aug 20 22:43:06 asu .08 Aug 20 22:44:15 lambda, I have done both ssh into neo and prepare/fdisk the sd and also done the sd card in host laptop too. Aug 20 22:51:56 lambda, re your SDHC, see the wiki for any special considerations. Should work fine but there may be extra steps Aug 20 22:52:15 lambda, btw nice nick, is that a Lisper or Smalltalker in our midst ? Aug 20 22:53:33 thx it comes from the anonym λ python function Aug 20 22:54:05 a close cousin that borrowed :-) Aug 20 22:54:51 does anyone know why 4 of the fso-testing feeds fail signature checks ? Aug 20 22:55:43 dunno ask mickeyl Aug 20 22:56:10 correction, 4 signature files get http 404 Aug 20 22:56:47 Is it possible to turn the wifi to monitor mode ? "iwconfig eth0 mode monitor" doesn't work Aug 20 22:56:59 hipitihop: the sig checks always fail, even for the 2007.2 repo Aug 20 22:58:42 donomo, ok, I'm assuming that won't prevent opkg upgrade Aug 20 23:00:41 hipitihop: it wont. Aug 21 00:01:55 morning Aug 21 00:02:03 Morning :) Aug 21 00:02:13 Depending on where you are :p Aug 21 00:02:49 ~ugt Aug 21 00:02:49 hmm... ugt is Universal Greeting Time. Created in #mipslinux, it is a rule that states that whenever somebody enters an IRC channel it is always morning, and it is always late when the person leaves. The local time of any other people in the channel, including the greeter, is irrelevant. http://www.total-knowledge.com/~ilya/mips/ugt.html Aug 21 00:03:42 hipitihop: you rang? Aug 21 00:04:37 I agree that time of day based greetings are obsolete. Aug 21 00:06:03 * cjb thinks timezones are obsolete Aug 21 00:06:46 * goldenhawk nods at cjb, "I was thinking about just going by UTC as a protest against the sillyness of daylight savings time." Aug 21 00:19:51 TankC: Should I insert some word of caution on voiding your warranty about now perhaps? You may be doing that, but I dont really know/care. Aug 21 00:20:08 TankC: once you've taken the back and front off, if you want to remove the PCB from the case then one trick is to lever the headset jack out of the case first with a screwdriver by pushing the case away from the pcb at that point Aug 21 00:21:42 Err - no. Aug 21 00:21:46 No need for screwdrivers. Aug 21 00:21:57 You can get it out just by bending the case with fingers. Grab the latest u-boot from buildhost.openmoko.org/daily/... Aug 21 00:35:34 And get the right revision (gta02v5) Aug 21 00:36:02 +1! Aug 21 00:36:18 ... assuming you have a Freerunner. A production Neo1973 would use gta01bv4. Aug 21 00:38:38 both of my partitions from my 4GB sdhc disapeard after powering of debian, anyone had the same issue? Aug 21 00:39:45 any latest u-boot good or is there a daily that you would advice on using, got my freerunner inbound in 1-2 days so I may as well get up to speed on the details. Aug 21 00:40:29 aggtrfrad: it's a known issue with suspend/resume, but I haven't seen it on a power-off. I haven't tried debian yet. Aug 21 00:40:40 FOOOOOO!!!! Aug 21 00:40:44 I haz moneh! Aug 21 00:46:54 workd, cool :) Aug 21 00:50:06 the debian installer set the boot partitions type (when fdisk-ing) to -b (win95 fat32), but then linux mounts it as ext2, and u-boot recognises it as ext2 also Aug 21 00:50:35 thats because it is formated as ext2 later... but why would we wanna use this setting in fdisk? :/ Aug 21 01:13:17 hrr, rotating to landscape and back with the keyboard open results in the keyboard not showing all the characters anymore Aug 21 01:13:23 on FSO Aug 21 01:13:36 it's slightly zoomed in, so backspace/tab etc are out of view Aug 21 01:22:02 hello peeps Aug 21 01:23:02 has anyone managed to use a bluetooth keyboard under 2008.8? Aug 21 01:32:59 tim_abell: yes Aug 21 01:33:51 i just got a freedom keyboard and so far no luck Aug 21 01:34:39 story so far: http://timwise.wikispaces.com/My+neo+freerunner+running+0m2008.8 (see end of page) Aug 21 01:35:03 "Can't create HID control channel: Connection reset by peer" I'm probably doing something really daft Aug 21 01:35:48 tim_abell: hidd --connect ADDRESS Aug 21 01:36:02 worked for me earlier.. Aug 21 01:41:12 tim_abell: maybe, not sure Aug 21 01:42:09 i haven't tried the keyboard on anything else yet Aug 21 01:42:48 and I only just bought it Aug 21 01:45:26 johnsu01, thanks for responding. did you have to enter the keyboard's passkey in some form in order to use it? I don't seem to have had the opportunity, unless I'm missing something Aug 21 01:45:58 tim_abell: Nope, didn't have to enter a passkey, and I didn't alter anything about the freerunner's bluetooth config Aug 21 01:46:29 hrm. okay, thanks Aug 21 01:48:39 it's a bit depressing that in the week I've been having gsm connection issues I've received approx zero voicemails Aug 21 02:16:32 what channel should i go to for help with gps (the website mentioned above did not help)? Aug 21 02:17:34 What kind of problem are you having with GPS? Aug 21 02:17:55 I cannot get a fix. Aug 21 02:35:36 mmaestri: ERROR: Nothing PROVIDES 'libgarmin' Aug 21 02:35:39 thanatos0624, I think there's a link to it on the "Getting Started" page too. You could try that one too. I'm afraid it's been over 1 month since I downloaded that program, so I can't point to a known good link. Aug 21 02:36:24 mmaestri: I can only add things to task-openmoko-feed that already exist as buildable packages in OE. Aug 21 02:37:29 jeebus Aug 21 02:37:37 #c++ ops are jerkoffs Aug 21 02:38:40 thanatos0624, are you running wget on the Freerunner itself? Aug 21 02:39:07 ya tell someone about a simple old trick that kicks 2 or 3 people off in a heavily populated channel because they have crappy routers, and you get banned Aug 21 02:39:19 KenYoung, I misread the instructions. I was successfully able to install agpsui, and now I'm running the program. Aug 21 02:39:31 thanatos0624, Goodie! Aug 21 02:39:45 so, who wants to get themselves banned from ##c++? Aug 21 02:41:11 haha, that works too Aug 21 02:42:00 ok Aug 21 02:42:10 almost have FSO up to snuff with e svn Aug 21 02:42:11 KenYoung, OK, so I press Power On and now I'm getting 1 failed fix every second or so. Aug 21 02:42:13 lets see... Aug 21 02:43:20 thanatos0624, Are you doing this outside? Is it detecting any satellites at all? Aug 21 02:44:21 i ate all the satellites Aug 21 02:44:21 hrm...why is my om2007.2 not saving contact #'s? Aug 21 02:44:22 yum Aug 21 02:44:31 rooly: it hates you Aug 21 02:44:32 :) Aug 21 02:44:35 seems that way Aug 21 02:44:43 however, i can add contacts from calls and sms just fine Aug 21 02:44:54 KenYoung, No, I'm inside. What exactly do you mean by detecting satellites? I'm not getting any fixes if that's what you're talking about. Aug 21 02:44:56 and it apparently loads from the sim just fine too Aug 21 02:46:34 * johnsu01 wonders about importing vcf contacts into the zhone addressbook, or maybe using evolution...? Aug 21 02:46:42 thanatos0624, I'd strongly recommend that you try it outside. GPS reception is usually poor, often impossible, inside a building. After you get the first fix, there's a decent chance you continue to get fixes after returning inside, if you are near windows, etc. But if your having troublem definately try it outside. Aug 21 02:47:40 KenYoung, OK. Would you happen to know if this is not the case with an external antenna? Aug 21 02:48:49 thanatos0624, I've not tried it with an external antenna. Certainly that would help. WIth my Freerunner, I *rarely* get a first fix inside, but it often can continue to update the possition when I return inside. Aug 21 02:48:57 yeah, another helpful thing is to be 7500 ft in the air Aug 21 02:54:30 KenYoung, I stood outside for 5 minutes and got a fix. Thanks for your help. Aug 21 02:55:21 thanatos0624, My pleasure. **** ENDING LOGGING AT Thu Aug 21 02:59:56 2008
