Mar 10 16:39:49 hmmm Mar 10 16:39:58 Tuju, positive Mar 10 16:40:12 i'm just confused about that mess Mar 10 16:40:20 I have a question, I am getting an open moko phone, and my parents are worried about the fact it is still in development.my understanding is that even if you totaly frak up the kernel, youcan recover it using a computer. Is this correct? Mar 10 16:40:35 it's like directories have run out of world. no new ones can be done anymore. Mar 10 16:40:41 SeligArkin: correct Mar 10 16:40:55 you can only bork it if you have a debug board Mar 10 16:41:09 otherwise you always have the NOR u-boot Mar 10 16:41:48 thats good to know Mar 10 16:42:24 Zorkman, wrong. you can also mess it up by flashing the phone's firmware or the gsm's firmware with the wrong stuff. Mar 10 16:43:21 I am hopingi will be able to get it arrived within the week Mar 10 16:43:35 the distributer I got it from had it on back-order though. Mar 10 16:43:35 tomboy64: what's "phone's firmware"? Mar 10 16:43:52 tomboy64: you can't flash the phones firmware in an irrecoverable way Mar 10 16:44:18 SpeedEvil, i stand to be corrected then :) Mar 10 16:44:48 but it is my understanding you can bork it up to a point where you have to have a debug-board to get it back running? Mar 10 16:44:57 no Mar 10 16:45:08 you always have the NOR flash to recover form if you press aux on boot Mar 10 16:45:16 I am curious to mess with the GPS, and compair its accuracy with a cheep bluetooth GPS I have Mar 10 16:45:27 there is no way to write the NOR flash memory without the debug board Mar 10 16:46:16 SpeedEvil: or by shorting out something in the hardware ;) Mar 10 16:47:02 yeah,I don'tplan to mess with the hardware. >.>; my soldering is not good enough to undo damage I could cause Mar 10 18:25:19 Hmm... question... think doom could run on the freerunner? Mar 10 18:26:58 SeligArkin, as far as I know it does Mar 10 18:27:07 ohhh Mar 10 18:27:13 I wonder how well that runs Mar 10 18:27:26 SeligArkin, I think there are some videos on youtube Mar 10 18:29:01 dkjnaskjnfdsf damn it youtube Mar 10 18:29:42 Sharwin_F: opkg.org has duke nukem 3d available but yes, I think Doom is told to run even better. Mar 10 18:32:21 could pair a wiimote with the phone, when out, pull out a wiimote and classic controller, start playing doom Mar 10 18:32:38 laugh at people who give you strange looks Mar 10 18:32:44 SeligArkin: hmm - how about using the accelerometers IN the phone..? Mar 10 18:32:58 rhkfin_: I mean for the buttons and sticks, not the accl Mar 10 18:33:14 hense the classic controller need Mar 10 18:33:18 hmm.. ok.. Mar 10 18:33:36 * SeligArkin doessome googling Mar 10 18:34:40 get a small joystick with buttons instead... Mar 10 18:35:14 has anyone had experience getting debian to work on the fr with the kernel in ext2 and not vfat? Mar 10 18:35:27 nokia: joystich with bt :) Mar 10 18:35:40 oh that Mar 10 18:35:44 or Mar 10 18:36:31 a tiny (size of a matchbox) joystick would be fun :) Mar 10 18:36:38 indeed Mar 10 18:37:37 google images: http://tinyurl.com/minijoystick Mar 10 18:39:57 you in finland? Mar 10 18:40:40 indeed Mar 10 18:42:36 I was thinking something like this with a actual joystick not a d-pad http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2959443&SRCCODE=GOOGLEBASE&cm_mmc_o=TBBTkwCjCVyBpAgf%20mwzygtCjCVRqCjCVRq Mar 10 18:44:12 SeligArkin: nice! One with BT would be cool :) Mar 10 18:44:22 hmm Mar 10 18:44:37 Are there opkg repositories for Om2008.12? Mar 10 18:45:12 novalis_dt: I think it uses the 2008.8 one Mar 10 18:45:17 at http://downloads.openmoko.org/repository/Om2008.8 Mar 10 18:45:26 http://www.suntekstore.com/bluetooth-gamepad-for-smartphone-and-pdas---black.html Mar 10 18:46:12 SeligArkin: whoo! Mar 10 18:49:24 ok.. Mar 10 18:49:50 novalis_dt: I take it you got your freerunner? Mar 10 18:50:07 johnsu01, Yep! I feel like it's 1998 again, and I have to manually frob configuration files to make anything work, and you know? It's not so bad. Mar 10 18:50:16 novalis_dt: It's good clean fun. Mar 10 18:50:17 bluetooth probably idn't a very good medium for stuff like that. Mar 10 18:50:50 but I think they make female usb to male mini-usb adapters you could use with another, its just a question of how much the controller needs to take Mar 10 18:51:00 novalis_dt: come on, you have a resistive touchscreen and a stylus! isn't that the point? Mar 10 18:51:28 * SeligArkin hopes hers will get in this week Mar 10 18:51:39 vininim, actually, my stylus seems to have disappeared some time in the last 24 hours. But I have a pretty close to 100% free software phone, which is the point. Mar 10 18:53:59 novalis_dt: don't worry, I've lost the original stylus ~2-3 times (and found n-1 times). Then I got a new, smaller and lost it ~5 times. I think I know where it is now.. Matches work ok too, cheap & available everywhere :) Mar 10 18:54:39 rhkfin_, not quite everywhere, as restaurants and bars are nonsmoking here in New York. Mar 10 18:54:54 -> toothpick Mar 10 18:54:55 :) Mar 10 18:55:38 I'm a little worried about scratching up my screen, but maybe I shouldn't be Mar 10 18:55:58 novalis_dt: InvisibleShield's popular around here.. Mar 10 18:57:08 OK, I believe I'll order one of those Mar 10 18:58:32 Is there a way to get a log of my booting process? I bought a microsd card, but there are some errors that scroll by too fast to read on bootup. Mar 10 18:58:56 dmesg? Mar 10 18:59:39 max_posedon, doesn't seem to go back far enough Mar 10 19:04:10 * SeligArkin ponders Mar 10 19:09:01 novalis_dt: I'm thinking about trying a guitar pick with a hole in it and a string Mar 10 19:09:05 * DaveLab boggles Mar 10 19:09:36 That's what Nokia sells with their... 5800 music something, I think Mar 10 19:09:55 that's retarded Mar 10 19:10:05 I don't know who came up with that marketing deal Mar 10 19:10:41 Yeah, I could just tie my stylus, when I turn it up... Mar 10 19:23:53 how did it work out? Mar 10 19:24:18 worked well, just broke the popsicle stick in half, widdled it down to a point Mar 10 19:24:23 hahaha Mar 10 19:24:26 SHANK! Mar 10 19:51:16 Well my problem is the distributor is out of stock, so I have to wait for them to get theirs in, then I have to wait for them to send me one. Mar 10 19:51:25 but I am only 300miles from the distributer Mar 10 19:51:57 SeligArkin: over 2 months afaicr Mar 10 19:51:58 the freerunner will almost completely fit in a coke can Mar 10 19:52:00 with little space to spare on either side Mar 10 19:52:04 Cheese is great for this sort of stuff. Mar 10 19:52:05 so I don't think it will tahe *that* long, unless UPS fraks up horribly Mar 10 19:52:06 measure it out with a ruler, cut a physical model Mar 10 19:52:55 heh, cheez Mar 10 19:53:17 it is similar to the size of a wheatabix :) Mar 10 19:53:28 the poptart example set it nice in my mind Mar 10 19:54:31 anttna: bigger, I think Mar 10 19:54:40 I hate wating for things to arrive in the mails Mar 10 19:56:14 OK, so I'm trying to install numptyphysics, and opkg dies with the useful message "Terminated". This is true whether I pass the URL, or download it myself and pass the filename. Strace just tells me I got a sigterm. Any ideas? Mar 10 20:05:12 rhkfin_, thanks. That installed and runs. How could I have figured that out myself, instead of wasting your time? Mar 10 20:05:18 Inside of .bashrc I check if irssi is started with pidof. If not, I start it under screen. Now, I turned of the irssi screen session. Then I started screen in order to run irssi under it. When screen came up, it launched irssi in screen based on .bashrc, and then I'd unknowingly start another instance myself :) Mar 10 20:06:03 SeligArkin: In other words, I probably should've put it in .login or whatever it's called ;) Mar 10 20:06:09 ah oops. It's more active at other times of the day Mar 10 21:02:33 The only trouble is, if everyone in here really was coding, we'd have 300 half-working distros to choose from :P Mar 10 21:03:08 kirun: You've obviously learned the real nature of openmoko-community :) Mar 10 21:03:18 * rhkfin_ likes it :) Mar 10 21:05:32 hmm Mar 10 21:05:47 * SeligArkin considers setting up openmoko in qemu to play with Mar 10 21:06:07 kirun, it is ok, best will be alive, all others will be dead, Darwin theory, you know) Mar 10 21:06:23 bah, stop spoiling things with your fancy facts and logic. Mar 10 22:07:41 the neo freerunner only supports up to 2.5G right? Mar 10 22:08:41 it does not support EDGE Mar 10 22:08:51 It supports GPRS Mar 10 22:09:17 I see... Mar 10 22:09:25 AT&T is supported, I hope... Mar 10 22:11:15 Yes. There was a bug affecting some AT&T 3G SIMs but I think it's fixed in the new GSM firmware. Mar 10 22:17:49 I really hope that the openmoko phone will work... seeing as I think I totaled thephone functions on my 8525... Mar 10 22:18:54 You should have a second 'backup' phone (ask your friends if anyone has upgraded and will give you their old one). Mar 10 22:35:27 well, if you've soaked it in water for two hours.. :) Mar 10 22:35:28 It would be bad for a speaker with a paper cone, or if it caused a metal part to rust Mar 10 22:35:45 small ones with usual plasic membrane might work like new after carefully drying for a week or two Mar 10 22:36:31 * SeligArkin does a google for thenumber on the bottom of it. Mar 10 22:36:46 And there is 'water' and water. Mar 10 22:37:05 yup Mar 10 22:37:08 Seawater is a very different thing from soft puretapwater Mar 10 22:37:21 at most a tablespoon of water dispursed in a baggie from a shower head. :P Mar 10 22:37:45 batteries out, place in oven at 70C for a day. Mar 10 22:37:58 or somewhere warm and dry - 40C+ for a week Mar 10 22:38:10 as soon as there's a noticeable amount of any salts (e.g. sugar) in the water, it will be borked Mar 10 22:38:20 I took it apart and dried the boards with a paper towel Mar 10 22:39:08 so far the only thing not workingn again is the speaker used for phone calls Mar 10 22:39:09 nah Mar 10 22:39:34 the board needs a week of drying as well Mar 10 22:39:48 hmm thats not good Mar 10 22:39:56 guess I am going to "loose" it for a week. >.> Mar 10 22:40:19 otherwise you risk oxidation of switch contacts etc. Mar 10 22:40:35 Or a more elevated temp Mar 10 22:40:39 for a shorter time Mar 10 22:40:40 also under the chips water may stay Mar 10 22:41:09 not above 80° though Mar 10 22:41:22 not without removing LCDs Mar 10 22:41:36 wooo Mar 10 22:41:46 * Dave warms his LCM Mar 10 22:42:27 wow - 8G microSD have crashed in price Mar 10 22:43:38 hell yeah 16GB! Mar 10 22:46:27 It should but I don't know if anyone has tested it yet Mar 10 22:46:30 why not? Mar 10 22:46:44 when 16gb gets cheap enough, I'll have to look into putting movies on the neo again. Mar 10 22:48:03 heh Mar 10 22:50:29 so... Mar 10 22:50:48 how well does openmoko in an emulator show off for the real thing? Mar 10 22:58:43 Speedevil, right, but did you have audio going and was it synced? Mar 10 22:58:58 eolson: audio was synced in the resulting output file Mar 10 22:59:38 Do you have any improvements from your post on the wiki? Mar 10 23:00:31 maybe if I just use the wiki transcoding notes correctly, I won't have any problems Mar 10 23:02:45 and I think I ran into sync issues when combining multiple large files, but I'll have to try it again Mar 10 23:14:10 eolson: you also used mpeg2? Mar 10 23:22:26 hmhm I know a camera is on the 'wishlist' but is there any news if it will actualy be in the next phone? Mar 10 23:22:45 SeligArkin: kernel has code for it at least Mar 10 23:24:09 I wonder... Mar 10 23:26:41 doesn't look like there are any bluetooth webcams... Mar 10 23:27:34 think the usb port on the neo could provide enough power for a webcam?
