**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Tue Mar 30 02:59:57 2010 Mar 30 03:05:04 rwhitby: save/restore looks amazing Mar 30 03:13:14 what's the best way to go about recompiling the WIDK? Mar 30 03:14:59 rwhitby: i can't find that part of the video where they discuss that Mar 30 03:15:33 zsoc: it's a one liner Mar 30 03:15:56 rwhitby: so in other words we still don't know much? Mar 30 03:16:13 zsoc: oh, it was in the Q&A near the end Mar 30 03:16:16 they just say "secure chroot jail where it can't do things that it shouldn't" Mar 30 03:17:55 Ok. I think it's actually good news. If it's a _complete_ jail, then clearly it needs to have access to various skeleton libraries Mar 30 03:18:39 yep Mar 30 03:18:52 I suspect they would just mount /usr in there Mar 30 03:18:59 * Mercury is looking forward to 1.4.1, if it actually happens in the next month or so. Mar 30 03:19:17 that would be excellent, then I could temperarily put anything i want anywhere i want, once the chroot is setup Mar 30 03:19:32 * rwhitby bbiab Mar 30 03:19:33 Mercury: looking at the past average of 1 per month, I would say the update would be soon Mar 30 03:22:13 zsoc: I hope so, and I hope that it actually fixes stuff. I'm on 1.3.5.1 with updates disabled, and I'd like some of the 1.4 stuff back. :) Mar 30 03:41:05 has anyone seen an issue with mail where it stops fetching new mail (other than inbox). I still get mail from the inboxes but when I go to my bacn folder, it shows nothing new for several weeks which is not true... Mar 30 03:41:08 strange... Mar 30 03:41:15 nope Mar 30 03:46:25 i've been getting strange network issues all over recently Mar 30 03:46:35 facebook app decided to stop working Mar 30 03:46:43 yeah, same here Mar 30 03:47:08 never refreshes. tried with both the standard app and the beta Mar 30 03:47:10 bacon folder ? Mar 30 03:47:14 sounds delicious Mar 30 03:47:19 It occasionally works, but half the time doesn't Mar 30 03:47:24 bacn, junk mail Mar 30 03:47:36 keeps the clutter out of the inbox Mar 30 03:47:39 not delicious? :( Mar 30 03:48:44 I want bacon.... Mar 30 03:49:49 not so much Mar 30 05:06:19 From twitter: "You guys need to vote for the @Palm Pre. Can't believe this race is so close. http://ow.ly/1smJv" Mar 30 05:09:22 I love how the descriptions next each phone give totally objective specifications with no possible chance of influencing the result ... Mar 30 05:11:56 i don't even know what that bb device is Mar 30 05:13:58 ya, never heard of it Mar 30 05:18:05 maybe those users never heard of the pre O:) Mar 30 05:18:57 poor htc hero Mar 30 05:19:03 came out and like a week later the droid came out Mar 30 05:19:15 it will be crushed in round 2 just like in rl Mar 30 05:19:38 look at me getting all emotional feeling sorry for this stupid poll rofl wtf, afk Mar 30 06:08:04 rwhitby: we try to build navit and relicing the for some not all of the SDL header and lib files are copied to the cross compile enviroment. Any idea why or heard about that happening. specialy SDL_image.h and the SDL_image lib in oure case Mar 30 06:11:09 hape_: add 'libsdl-image' to your DEPENDS line in your makefile Mar 30 06:11:57 it's separate, and looking now you don't have it in the current git, so perhaps that's the issue? Mar 30 06:14:50 dtzWill: Thanks for the hint. But here comes the intresting part. Mar 30 06:15:37 we both( noradtux and I ) rebuild our tc's from scratch. With no chnages. Just checkout. and he have the lib and I not Mar 30 06:16:04 The only differntc we found until now is the he is using debian and I ubuntu Mar 30 06:17:24 hape_: hmm, well add the DEPENDS anyway, it's the right thing to do Mar 30 06:17:34 hape_: not sure why noradtux would have it, sorry Mar 30 06:17:49 ok, will try Mar 30 08:15:29 hi! is there any app to show in a webpage my pre position? I will make a big travel and like to show my position to my friends Mar 30 09:45:44 where's the kernel sources for the overclock kernels btw ? Mar 30 09:45:58 and which kernel is it against ? Mar 30 10:16:30 yo anybody around? Mar 30 10:16:39 rwhitby? Mar 30 10:17:39 i'm very concerned with some open ports I see when using mytether app Mar 30 10:18:11 dbus, java, mdns are all exposed to the WAN Mar 30 10:21:21 oh and ssh Mar 30 10:27:57 bhuey: kernel source is on opensource.palm.com, and patch is on git.webos-internals.org Mar 30 10:35:09 has the terminal app for Luna stopped working with the latest pre update? Mar 30 10:35:19 because i can't get it to boot anymore...it crashes luna in fact Mar 30 10:49:27 oh you know what else happened...my unpriv user was deleted and replaced with oprofile user...had to read myself as uid 1002 Mar 30 10:49:34 readd* Mar 30 10:51:21 retry: that's why we use root and ssh keys now Mar 30 10:51:39 how's that? Mar 30 10:51:48 retry: yes, Terminal is broken for 1.4 - there's a $125 bounty to be shared amongst those that fix it Mar 30 10:51:56 heh Mar 30 10:51:58 retry: using the OpenSSH app in Preware Mar 30 10:52:01 glad to hear it's not just me for a change Mar 30 10:52:13 what's that? Mar 30 10:52:13 well that's great /sbin/MAKEDEV is missing on the pre Mar 30 10:53:01 openssh for preware is a luna app? Mar 30 10:53:07 or just using preware to install openssh? Mar 30 10:53:12 I use dropbear right now Mar 30 10:53:25 i installed it a long time ago with optware's ipkg Mar 30 10:53:40 retry: using preware to install openssh, all the dependencies are in preware now Mar 30 10:53:47 you might not remember rwhitby, but you helped me a ton getting preware and terminal on my pre Mar 30 10:53:58 i see Mar 30 10:54:04 retry: yep, it's much easier now :) Mar 30 10:54:12 easier but less edifying Mar 30 10:54:36 I like being able to have all my confs and important files where I know they are so I can back them up myself Mar 30 10:54:48 with ease comes loss of control Mar 30 10:54:57 speaking of backup, are you creating scripts for Save/Restore ? Mar 30 10:54:58 but sometimes it's a tradeoff worth making Mar 30 10:55:08 save restore in what sense? Mar 30 10:55:16 http://bit.ly/saverestore Mar 30 10:55:43 you might like to try XTerm from the testing feed too Mar 30 10:56:18 ahh neat that's a grand idea Mar 30 10:56:33 i think I might have to just dr my pre one of these days and start all over Mar 30 10:57:03 it's just too mangled at this point Mar 30 10:57:09 can't really tell what's my prob or community prob Mar 30 10:57:23 I hope to get to the point soon where I won't care if a Palm profile reset happens and wipes everything except the USB drive. Mar 30 10:57:36 hm yeah Mar 30 10:57:39 that'd be grand Mar 30 10:58:04 I need to get wifi settings insertable from the meta-doctor though Mar 30 10:58:07 i hope to get to a point where palm isn't going away and the pre becomes abandonware :/ Mar 30 10:59:02 you guys don't support mytether at all do you? Mar 30 10:59:25 is tethering still taboo here? Mar 30 10:59:41 kinda ridiculous since sprint allows it for other phones... Mar 30 10:59:49 nope, there are at least 3 carriers with tethering plans available now Mar 30 11:00:42 groovy Mar 30 11:01:19 i really like usb tethering...just these firewall rules concern me Mar 30 11:02:38 which rules? the Pre is fairly ok out of the box Mar 30 11:03:08 mytether sets iptables and exposes ssh, java, and dbus to the WAN Mar 30 11:03:25 also mdns but that might be normal Mar 30 11:04:10 i never made an iptables backup..now I wish I had one to see what else it messed with Mar 30 11:04:23 it removes my ssh rule that I set in dropbear's upstart script Mar 30 11:04:51 that's a bit rude of that application Mar 30 11:04:54 anyway I posted in their forum, so hopefully someone notices...I think it should concern anybody using that app Mar 30 11:05:04 i totally agree Mar 30 11:05:18 also the default iptables doesn't seem to be what my pre had at time of mytether install Mar 30 11:05:29 it seems to be whatever its notion of default ruleset is Mar 30 11:05:42 not surprising, since the application is developed in secret using closed source development. only one set of eyes is never enough. Mar 30 11:06:06 yeah Mar 30 11:06:20 if you're doing usb networking, why not use the open source freetether? Mar 30 11:06:31 is that in preware? Mar 30 11:06:42 ~testing-feeds Mar 30 11:06:47 ~testing-feed Mar 30 11:06:48 I was looking for something in preware but didn't find it...got mytether from google Mar 30 11:06:49 it has been said that testing-feed is a means of testing new WebOS Internals products, documented at http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/Testing_Feeds Mar 30 11:06:52 OH Mar 30 11:07:03 well that sounds worth trying Mar 30 11:07:19 source is at git.webos-internals.org Mar 30 11:07:25 groovy Mar 30 11:07:27 incidentally Mar 30 11:07:44 is /etc/pmnetconfig something that always exists on a pre? Mar 30 11:08:04 yep Mar 30 11:08:11 ahh Mar 30 11:08:20 what do you need to know? I have an unmodified copy here Mar 30 11:08:26 so then iptables-default.config IS the pre's ruleset Mar 30 11:08:50 moddate of feb 14th for me Mar 30 11:08:52 so that would make sense Mar 30 11:09:01 today I got this added iptables-usbnetmode.config Mar 30 11:09:09 that's the output of iptables-save Mar 30 11:09:14 and that's the ruleset that exposes the services I mentioned Mar 30 11:09:24 yup that I know Mar 30 11:09:30 can you md5sum it? Mar 30 11:09:35 yep, I have usbnetmode too Mar 30 11:09:45 oh you do? Mar 30 11:09:47 can you md5sum both? Mar 30 11:09:58 actually the counters might mess it up Mar 30 11:10:13 just wanted to avoid a pastebin /diff Mar 30 11:10:44 seemed like the usbnetmode one was added by mytether since the moddate is today Mar 30 11:12:55 think you could pastebin the output of iptables-save on your unmodded copy? Mar 30 11:20:17 the files will be created by PmNetConfig executable Mar 30 11:21:10 http://webos.pastebin.com/BLT6hwWe Mar 30 11:21:21 that's the usbnetmode one Mar 30 11:23:52 tyvm Mar 30 11:24:11 oh hey so that's the same as mine Mar 30 11:24:15 so it's exposing all those services Mar 30 11:24:28 ssh, dbus Mar 30 11:24:39 and java Mar 30 11:25:45 indeed it is Mar 30 11:26:36 well that's not good Mar 30 11:26:53 i wonder why it feels the need to do that for usb networking Mar 30 11:26:53 nope, not good at all Mar 30 11:27:03 so that's palm's doing? Mar 30 11:27:16 I believe Palm consider USB networking as a debug configuration Mar 30 11:27:32 ah like devmode Mar 30 11:27:47 perhaps devmode uses that ruleset? Mar 30 11:28:39 dunno. my carrier doesn't allow incoming connections anyway, so I'm not really fussed :) Mar 30 11:28:54 hm Mar 30 11:29:11 but yeah, it's something that should be characterised and publicised Mar 30 11:29:25 yeah i think so too Mar 30 11:29:46 idk about you but it's nearly 1:30am here in hawaii...and I'm moving back to the mainland tomorrow Mar 30 11:30:01 so I got other fish to fry right now Mar 30 11:30:03 only 10pm here :) Mar 30 11:30:17 I thank you for your time and help as always Mar 30 11:30:29 no wuckkas, have a good flight Mar 30 11:30:34 oh would that I could move to oz Mar 30 11:30:45 I'd be in brisbane asap Mar 30 11:30:53 or sydney Mar 30 11:31:06 or maybe melbourne Mar 30 11:31:23 i think like 4 of the world's most livable cities are in oz Mar 30 11:32:02 I've lived in Brisbane, Sydney and Mountain View, CA. I prefer living in Adelaide. Mar 30 11:32:20 i have a pretty good friend in adelaide...she's japanese Mar 30 11:32:35 you lived in mountain view eh? Mar 30 11:32:46 I used to live in SF for a few years before I came to HI Mar 30 11:33:08 anyway I'm off to Chicago Mar 30 11:33:23 be seeing you Mar 30 11:33:42 ciao Mar 30 11:38:33 * rwhitby adds Save/Restore support for Clock sync, Tweed and Scoop. Mar 30 11:57:45 gak Mar 30 11:58:56 looks like I'm headed for my first webos doctor session. email now has gone bonkers and I can't even properly remove/readd accounts now Mar 30 12:20:22 well this is odd. now the time is off. it is as if the phone is slowly dying Mar 30 13:21:17 jhojho: a good time to test Save/Restore then ;-) Mar 30 13:22:15 save/restore only detects 3 apps Mar 30 13:26:05 yep, each app has different requirements, and need to be individually supported Mar 30 13:49:25 Good morning everyone Mar 30 13:51:58 rwhitby: only the US version of NFSU is detected, not the euro version Mar 30 13:52:24 jhojho: ah, do you want to test if the same script works? Mar 30 13:52:49 you can update the program and I can try it I guess Mar 30 13:53:04 it should. I dont see why it would be different Mar 30 13:53:08 jhojho: is it com.ea.app.nfsuc.eu.efigs ? Mar 30 13:53:21 let me check Mar 30 13:53:56 well thats odd Mar 30 13:54:07 now everythng is blanked out Mar 30 13:54:26 oh wait. nevermind Mar 30 13:55:10 rwhitby: yeah I think that's it Mar 30 13:55:26 weird thing is the sims3 eu version is supported Mar 30 13:55:27 com.ea.app.nfsuc.eu.de ? Mar 30 13:57:05 rwhitby: com.ea.app.nfsuc.eu.en Mar 30 13:57:53 it seems that save/restore is not detecting drpodder for me either Mar 30 13:58:22 jhojho: interesting. what country is listed in your palm profile? Mar 30 13:58:35 us Mar 30 13:58:48 i think Mar 30 13:58:52 how do I check? Mar 30 13:58:53 but you have a GSM device? Mar 30 13:59:02 log into the web interface on palm.com Mar 30 13:59:32 cdma Mar 30 13:59:50 how do you have a .eu nfs then? Mar 30 13:59:57 (or shoudn't I ask) Mar 30 14:00:02 loaded the nfs out of curiosity but never got around to removing it =) Mar 30 14:00:23 didnt play and no interest either for anyone reading =) Mar 30 14:00:45 so for drpodder, I have a old install Mar 30 14:00:47 com.palm.drnull.prepod Mar 30 14:00:50 is what I have Mar 30 14:01:07 which is probably why it's not detected although it should be Mar 30 14:01:24 nope, it detects by appid, and that's not a valid current appid Mar 30 14:01:42 gak Mar 30 14:01:55 perils of being an early adopter. Mar 30 14:02:11 this email wonking out thing is really annoying Mar 30 14:02:18 now I cant even remove the account Mar 30 14:02:31 jhojho: are the gamesett and gamedata files in /media/cryptofs/apps/usr/palm/applications/res_nfsuc/ ? Mar 30 14:02:49 weill its partially removed (all the folders are gone) but it still shows the accounts Mar 30 14:02:56 jhojho: that version of drPodder tracked downloads using a method that wouldn't work without being in the com.palm domain. And I had to move out of the com.palm domain to get in the catalog.. so, it's a pain, yes. Sorry. :( Mar 30 14:03:27 drnull: no worries. not your fault. this is the preware version btw Mar 30 14:03:57 sure. The new version is also available in preware as com.drnull.drpodder-hb, that's the one that save/restore will backup properly. Mar 30 14:04:07 rwhitby: no such /media/cryptofs/apps/usr/palm/applications/res_nfsuc/ Mar 30 14:04:30 drnull: yeah I just have to write down my settings before I erase Mar 30 14:04:57 you can at least export via OPML to keep track of which feeds you had. Then yeah, write down what has been listened to, etc. Mar 30 14:05:05 jhojho: sorry, /media/cryptofs/apps/usr/palm/applications/com.ea.app.nfsuc.eu.en/res_nfsuc/ ? Mar 30 14:05:44 yeah Mar 30 14:05:47 it's there Mar 30 14:07:30 jhojho: install save/restore, and copy /var/svc/org.webosinternals.saverestore/com.ea.app.nfsuc to /var/svc/org.webosinternals.saverestore/com.ea.app.nfsuc.eu.en Mar 30 14:07:40 then rerun save/restore Mar 30 14:09:37 seems to work Mar 30 14:09:41 but who knows Mar 30 14:09:44 how do I add support for save/restore in my app? does it work with cookie data? Mar 30 14:09:44 =) Mar 30 14:10:01 VincentLaw: it can work with cookie data as of 0.6.0 Mar 30 14:10:09 VincentLaw: what is the appid, and where does it store it's data? Mar 30 14:12:01 net.sorrowind.slots and it stores via cookie Mar 30 14:12:45 VincentLaw: do you have Save/Restore installed? Mar 30 14:12:58 not yet Mar 30 14:13:04 I'll do so now :p Mar 30 14:17:17 VincentLaw: put http://git.webos-internals.org/?p=applications/saverestore.git;a=blob_plain;f=scripts/net.sorrowind.slots;hb=HEAD in /var/svc/org.webosinternals.saverestore/net.sorrowind.slots and then test Mar 30 14:17:44 or email me an ipkg file Mar 30 14:18:38 I can send you the ipkg, I'll give you 1.1.3 that's currently in review for updating. Mar 30 14:20:39 rwhitby: you have mail Mar 30 14:28:08 * mjkjr|wirc is lol at the overclock thread =) Mar 30 14:28:18 why so? Mar 30 14:30:27 VincentLaw: ok, it'll be in the next version Mar 30 14:31:25 just the posts and people taking things so personally Mar 30 14:32:13 like every american... nothing new Mar 30 14:32:14 :) Mar 30 14:33:17 rwhitby: great, thanks! Mar 30 15:00:58 +s Mar 30 15:01:04 north korea Mar 30 15:01:18 Arizona Mar 30 15:01:24 Stupid Speed Camera's Mar 30 15:01:58 I was driving from LA to Phoenix on the 10 and all of the sudden there was a sign that said speed camera 300 feet ahead Mar 30 15:02:09 NOT cool Mar 30 15:02:09 you can usually fight and win speed camera tickets Mar 30 15:02:28 * rwhitby bbt Mar 30 15:02:31 If anyone ever comes to Cleveland watch out for the red liht cameras on almost every corner 8-/ Mar 30 15:02:38 Light* Mar 30 15:02:46 I don't have to worry about red light camera's Mar 30 15:02:47 they issue the ticket based on the registered person on the license plate Mar 30 15:02:58 It was my dads car Mar 30 15:02:58 :p Mar 30 15:03:10 so if you fight it and say that it wasn't you who was driving your car, they have no proof Mar 30 15:03:19 no proof = not guilty Mar 30 15:03:38 I may speed, but besides that I follow all ze rules Mar 30 15:03:52 including the stopping at stopsigns and redlight ones Mar 30 15:03:55 The ones in Cleveland take 2 pics. One of the driver and one of the plate. Mar 30 15:04:01 and the use your blinker one Mar 30 15:04:03 red light cameras I have no problems with Mar 30 15:04:23 if you run a red light bad enough to get ticketed by the camera, you were putting yourself in serious danger Mar 30 15:04:31 and others Mar 30 15:04:35 i drive like a german Mar 30 15:04:40 Those are no problem. It's the speed cameras that are annoying and those are all over Cleveland as well Mar 30 15:04:42 100% focused on driving... but excessively fast Mar 30 15:04:44 lol Mar 30 15:04:54 but speed cameras I'd ignore and just fight the tickets Mar 30 15:05:14 Yea it's hard in Cleveland because they snap a pic of the driver too Mar 30 15:05:24 Luckily, there are not many, if any, speed camera's here Mar 30 15:05:24 every other american around me on the road is like... smoking a cigarette while texting and drinking a starbucks latte while blasting horrible music Mar 30 15:05:31 only the CHP Mar 30 15:05:31 oh I havent noticed any speed cameras in MA Mar 30 15:05:36 and then you have these women shaving their crotches and putting on makeup while driving Mar 30 15:05:39 * loot- shakes head Mar 30 15:05:46 and I will get beat if I get a ticket from the CHP Mar 30 15:05:53 TheInvsbleMan: that'd be some weird camera trickery to get the right angle for a driver shot Mar 30 15:06:26 hehe i think i have more speeding ticket experience than all of you combined unfortunately Mar 30 15:06:35 loot-: blasting horrible music is the #1 cause of wrecks. I swear it's true. Mar 30 15:06:44 VincentLaw: I know. But somehow they do it. A friend of mine had a ticket mailed to him with a picture of him driving and his license plate # Mar 30 15:06:46 i have a file folder thats over an inch thick with tickets from 23 different states spanning a decade Mar 30 15:06:49 :P Mar 30 15:06:53 Rap causes Wrecks Mar 30 15:07:07 i have over 10 tickets for speeding in excess of 100 Mar 30 15:07:09 I have gotten one speeding ticket Mar 30 15:07:18 55 in a 40 Mar 30 15:07:36 well, I was going 60, but the cop rounded it down so I stayed in the lower bracket Mar 30 15:07:43 I got a 70 in a 65... for trying to pass someone. Mar 30 15:08:05 lol Mar 30 15:08:06 See... Here you go 70 in the slow lane on the freewat Mar 30 15:08:15 and 80 is the slowest in the fast lane Mar 30 15:08:17 i once drove through the entire state of utah doing 120mph+ Mar 30 15:08:28 and literally 1 minute after crossing the nevada state line got a ticket Mar 30 15:08:30 in CT i got a ticket for driving 100 in 55 zone Mar 30 15:08:31 haha Mar 30 15:08:37 they wanted to put me in jail for reckless driving Mar 30 15:08:51 halfhalo_T400: oh, it's no different here, except for this one like model-T car that didn't belong on the highway. I just happened to be today's lucky winner of a speeding ticket. Everyone was going as fast if not faster than I was :p Mar 30 15:09:09 I can't get a ticket for another 6 months otherwise I'm screwed Mar 30 15:09:20 i just got off probation Mar 30 15:09:23 under 21+ticket+insurance= really really high Mar 30 15:09:35 for reckless driving (in excess of 20mph over the posted limit) Mar 30 15:09:37 speaking of car insurance Mar 30 15:09:37 lol Mar 30 15:09:45 my car insurance was supposed to go down this year Mar 30 15:09:48 turning 24 = lower prices Mar 30 15:09:53 Halfhalo_t400: I know the feeling Mar 30 15:09:56 except I called them, and well, now the cutoff is /35/ Mar 30 15:09:59 my insurance is nearly the same cost as my monthly car payment Mar 30 15:10:00 :( Mar 30 15:10:09 and im over 25 Mar 30 15:10:10 en0x where in CT? Mar 30 15:10:40 But then again, I am driving a 2003 V6 Highlander, which ain't all stock Mar 30 15:11:07 i live in the city so its easier to drive a small car Mar 30 15:11:14 mobgod, hartford Mar 30 15:11:25 anyone no of a patch for aim so u can send files or pics Mar 30 15:11:27 also, holy crap this all is offtopic >.> Mar 30 15:11:32 Well, I live in A city. Mar 30 19:17:40 cause the core Mar 30 19:17:42 then you can use gdb Mar 30 19:17:49 on the core files it produces Mar 30 19:18:11 usually i try to wake up the device .. it doesn't respond ... i keep pressing power on .. it finally shows the screen for a few seconds .. reboot Mar 30 19:18:25 i can't cause it at will Mar 30 19:18:26 ah, powering on the device .. interesting Mar 30 19:18:27 yay luna reboots! Mar 30 19:18:37 it's a "well" know problem Mar 30 19:18:39 well, the next time it happens .. a core will be produced .. Mar 30 19:18:43 ah, cool Mar 30 19:18:47 and you can at least see what is causing it .. Mar 30 19:18:52 (which functions, at least) Mar 30 19:19:09 would be interesting to know Mar 30 19:19:16 absolutely Mar 30 19:19:17 it's always when waking up from sleep Mar 30 19:19:21 cool Mar 30 19:19:24 ok, enabled Mar 30 19:19:31 congratulations Mar 30 19:22:44 hmm Mar 30 19:22:45 11 SIGSEGV create core image segmentation violation Mar 30 19:23:04 thats a nice segv Mar 30 19:23:09 SEGMENTATION FAULT: CORE DUMPED! Mar 30 19:23:10 segmentation violation ;) Mar 30 19:23:27 it's usually address 0x724f is NOT aligned Mar 30 19:23:29 whatever that means Mar 30 19:28:33 it means ARM processors can only access word aligned memory (32-bits) .. and it is asking for something that is on an off-word boundary and gets all huffy puffy about it Mar 30 19:29:08 which means that they borked the code somewhere;d Mar 30 19:29:17 yeppers .. Mar 30 19:29:40 wasn't someone saying the ARM in webos is configured to also assecc on non-word aligned addresses? Mar 30 19:29:42 signal 11 means? Mar 30 19:35:51 hmm Mar 30 19:35:59 sry Mar 30 19:36:02 :) Mar 30 19:37:52 i guess if no one is listening you can speak german ;) Mar 30 19:39:00 "Are you German?" Mar 30 19:39:14 * swisstomcat is swiss Mar 30 19:39:17 :) Mar 30 19:39:33 was a movie quote Mar 30 19:39:45 5th element Mar 30 19:39:48 really? Mar 30 19:40:14 really, Bruce Willis asks the agypt thing Mar 30 19:40:59 Professor Pacoli: [shocked after turning around and being surprised by one of the divine aliens] A-a-aa-a-a-are you German? Mar 30 19:40:59 [alien shakes its head] Mar 30 19:41:29 right :) Mar 30 19:44:36 http://www.fawltysite.net/the-germans.htm Mar 30 21:04:56 whoa Mar 30 21:04:59 im diggin the new fb beta Mar 30 21:05:08 it notifies me when fb isn't even open!!! Mar 30 21:05:15 now i don't have to open fb anymore Mar 30 21:05:53 yeah, thats the only thing which works on german pre's at the moment :D Mar 30 21:05:55 too bad notification is not working for me Mar 30 21:06:00 but nice anyway :) Mar 30 21:06:15 hucksy: i thought it might be that my pre is german .. apparently not? Mar 30 21:06:52 on german pre, you get the notifications but the app itself dont work (...much) Mar 30 21:07:27 Well, see it doesn't work here either Mar 30 21:07:31 so its not your pre Mar 30 21:07:41 oh Mar 30 21:07:47 ok Mar 30 21:11:04 i see the number of notifications in the left-corner Mar 30 21:11:17 but if i open that menu, nothing is shown Mar 30 21:18:39 MetaView: noch da Mar 30 21:18:45 ja Mar 30 21:19:16 rwhitby: thanks for the link Mar 30 21:19:35 I was wondering what kernel version it is. I'll need to set up a cross build environment as well Mar 30 21:23:06 2.6.24 Mar 30 21:25:56 night Mar 30 21:28:36 yeah, looks like the patch I want to add to that kernel source tree hasn't been backported to it yet Mar 30 21:31:40 yeah, tons of freak'n changes to the board specific files Mar 30 21:34:41 MetaView: Ping Mar 30 21:35:11 already downloading Mar 30 21:35:18 ok Mar 30 21:48:29 some of this Palm kernel code, bah... Mar 30 21:50:07 swisstomcat: yeah the app is pretty buggy, launching the app from notifications doesn't seem to work right. If one feed works, the other won't(in ref to news feed and notification feed) and if notification feed is broken you will see a delay in OS notifications from Facebook, obviously. I think something is borked by the way it pulls data. Mar 30 21:50:12 bhuey: in which way? Mar 30 21:50:15 doh he left Mar 30 21:50:22 or specifically, what code Mar 30 21:57:18 chrisa: some of theirdriver code looks kind odd as if the engineer that wrote it came from another embedded systems background other than Linux kernel Mar 30 21:57:39 What driver? Mar 30 21:57:58 Hmm, depends if you're looking at pre or pixi come to think of it Mar 30 21:58:04 `the pre code Mar 30 21:58:22 I suspect the pixi drivers are going to be more general "linux-ish" Mar 30 21:58:24 I was thinking about the option of forward porting or bckporting a scheduler to it Mar 30 21:58:40 chrisa: the mutex* convention is a odd Mar 30 21:58:47 ..is odd Mar 30 21:59:17 I don't actually recall many mutexes. Most of the peri drivers only need 1 Mar 30 21:59:24 Are you looking in omap/msm code? Mar 30 21:59:30 you don't generally use that primitive unless it's in something like a file system driver Mar 30 21:59:41 some of the lower leve ldevice that have ioctls, yes Mar 30 21:59:49 haven't looked it more carefully though Mar 30 22:00:04 I don't see anything wrong with mutexes used in a sysfs context Mar 30 22:00:22 They get dicey when you start doing workqueues and such Mar 30 22:00:32 that's probably fine. it odd to see it in the same function with a spin lock Mar 30 22:00:47 they should have just use a spinlock then Mar 30 22:01:11 I imagine a good chunk of pre's device drivers were written by people coming from winmo or elsewhere Mar 30 22:01:18 Whereas the pixi ones are going to be more linux-like Mar 30 22:01:21 yeah, that's what I mean Mar 30 22:01:33 hard to say about the pixi haven't seen that source tree yet Mar 30 22:01:42 I have a Pre so I'm not intersted in a pixi Mar 30 22:02:03 I see more pixis than pres in the office Mar 30 22:02:06 I just wish the debauchery that's 1.4 is going to get fixed in 1.4.1 Mar 30 22:02:20 never seen a pixi outside of a Sprint store Mar 30 22:02:47 yeah never seen one in the wild here Mar 30 22:02:53 and I live in NYC area Mar 30 22:02:58 I've seen a few verizon ones Mar 30 22:03:05 folks on the street that have Pre-s have no problem walking up and chatting about how great the device is Mar 30 22:03:22 The Pixi is the type of device that the average T-Mobile customer would appreciate. Mar 30 22:03:32 chrisa: was thinkgin about backporting BFS to it but the 2.6.24 kernel is rather old Mar 30 22:04:12 there's no reason to move the BSP dirvers to a newer kernel really Mar 30 22:04:30 so I don't expect a change from Palm for many years to a newer kernel Mar 30 22:04:45 Actually, there are good reasons to move forward Mar 30 22:04:53 .29 and .33 both contain strong changes for msm/omap Mar 30 22:05:04 chrisa: the use of mutex* boxes those drivers in to a certain kind of programming model which makes it more awkward to ove it to an -rt kernel Mar 30 22:05:28 chrisa: why is that useful ? Mar 30 22:05:36 maintenance issues ? Mar 30 22:05:59 Is what useful? The mutex issue or going to .29 / .33? Mar 30 22:06:10 moving to a newer kernel Mar 30 22:06:38 companies tend not to take that risk when there's little advantage Mar 30 22:07:07 it's a lot of developer time that can be use to either write devices or bug fix things Mar 30 22:07:24 Keeping the kernels between products closer (or hell, synced) provides enormous benefit, and .29 and .33 for instance have tangible improvements for these chipsets Mar 30 22:07:48 yeah, there was a lot of merging to getthe lower levels of the system up Mar 30 22:07:55 and you have to take into account that the kernel team isn't going to be fixing userspace bugs, that's not how resources work Mar 30 22:08:08 So it's not a huge stretch to try to do it / want to do it Mar 30 22:08:09 itwould be better if they track mainline closer and upstreame their patches Mar 30 22:08:18 That's the end goal Mar 30 22:08:22 chrisa: you work for Palm ? Mar 30 22:08:26 Business reality slows things done Mar 30 22:08:30 bhuey: and they are lucky to have him Mar 30 22:08:31 right Mar 30 22:08:38 I agree Mar 30 22:08:44 (zsoc has no idea if I'm even remotely competent) Mar 30 22:09:12 chrisa: they would be better off upstreaming as much as they can regarding public drivers Mar 30 22:09:16 chrisa: you have shown enough general business sense and knowledge about your field in this room alone to make you a usable resource.. whether you are competent or not Mar 30 22:09:21 chrisa: that's what management is for Mar 30 22:09:30 because dealing with all ofthe ARM stuff is a bitch that should be holding down a kernel team Mar 30 22:09:40 should=shouldn't Mar 30 22:10:07 chrisa: btw, I'm a known -rt developer Mar 30 22:10:30 who just happens to be in love with his Pre thing Mar 30 22:10:33 fun Mar 30 22:10:35 his=this Mar 30 22:10:50 WAY better than Android minus the crazy bugs Mar 30 22:11:16 I don't like what android did to the userspace Mar 30 22:11:23 haven't seen it yet Mar 30 22:11:35 Palm should open source mor e of it's OS to the world Mar 30 22:11:46 bhuey: they have interests to keep it closed. Mar 30 22:11:47 because they're falling behind it seems with things Mar 30 22:11:50 I only follow russell's branch. The other lists are too high volume Mar 30 22:12:14 chrisa: moving to a new kernel would get them BFS easily Mar 30 22:15:20 Does Palm have any interest in licensing out WebOS to other hardware makers? I imagine keeping a majority of the important parts in the OS closed allows them a monetary opportunity to license it out Mar 30 22:15:25 maybe disabling sleep boosting might help things as well Mar 30 22:15:56 IANAE, but I presume there isn't a desire to license out the OS Mar 30 22:16:12 after the looking at the kernel code, it would hard for them to do that unless they had devs that were really familiar with it Mar 30 22:16:13 Would rather build a strong ecosystem (and really, we've had < 1 year so far) Mar 30 22:16:22 If I can sit down with someone for 15 minutes, I can turn anyone onto webOS Mar 30 22:16:48 webOS is one thing, but the hardware is another really. Mar 30 22:16:57 And people have to stop saying Palm needs to make a 4g device. 4g coverage is _not_ good anywhere really, and won't be for years. Mar 30 22:17:01 hardware has been ok Mar 30 22:17:09 LTE isn't exactly going to be blanketed anytime soon either Mar 30 22:17:31 what about a snapdragon ? Mar 30 22:17:40 4G isn't important, but devices like the HTC Evo have more going for it than just 4G radio Mar 30 22:17:53 chrisa: I wasn't saying LTE was better than WiMax, they are both far off Mar 30 22:18:13 bhuey: I disagree on snapdragon. I'd rather a slower dualcore arm chip.. just makes more sense. Mar 30 22:18:40 The dualcore arms coming out don't look like they're phone destined Mar 30 22:18:42 netbooks perhaps Mar 30 22:18:44 faster processor is always better Mar 30 22:18:48 But they sacrifice a lot of power savings Mar 30 22:19:15 coupled with tons of mass storage and you can take HD video, etc... Mar 30 22:19:35 Eventually pants are going to come with generators Mar 30 22:19:37 bhuey: I am very familiar with the media capabilities of the Pre/webOS Mar 30 22:19:40 Fertility will hit a record low Mar 30 22:19:54 chrisa: use/touch an HD2 yet? Interesting design. Mar 30 22:20:18 chrisa: you should get to work and stop talking to us Mar 30 22:20:35 Joke is on you, I'm doing builds this very second Mar 30 22:20:40 bhuey: you might want to consider he is out of work/ on break/ compiling code Mar 30 22:20:58 * bhuey is in San Francisco this week Mar 30 22:21:20 chrisa: you work or don't work for Palm ? Mar 30 22:23:38 bhuey: I believe he made it reasonably clear he does? Mar 30 22:24:12 yeah, then you said soemthing that makes me think he doesn't Mar 30 22:25:39 bhuey: sorry, I'm really bad at life. Mar 30 22:26:34 as long as you're friendly it makes up for that :) Mar 30 22:26:59 bhuey: I try to be :/ Mar 30 22:27:31 I'm kind of interested to know if homebrew projects affect the development of WebOS at all. You have egaudet's virtual keyboard which people really would like. And an IME engine like justinput which I would love in a Japanese flavor. Do the developers look or consider this kind of code? Mar 30 22:28:00 Or just turn a blind eye to it? Mar 30 22:28:30 I bet they look at it.... Whether they do anything with it is a different question Mar 30 22:29:23 =( Mar 30 22:29:30 * Kyusaku wants Japanese IME Mar 30 22:30:40 I took a little look at jeffreycn's code for his IME, but without any knowledge in Chinese I find it extremely difficult to figure out how to adapt it to Japanese. Mar 30 22:42:27 morning Mar 30 22:43:05 mornz. Mar 30 22:43:54 AnOutsider: just take a look at the existing scripts - I've made them as modular as I could Mar 30 22:44:18 jeez, you actually go back and read stuff when you arise? Mar 30 22:44:20 ha Mar 30 22:49:11 AnOutsider: he is the king of backlogging Mar 30 22:50:04 AnOutsider: my client highlights things addressed to me. I skipped the hours of conversation about US speeding tickets. Mar 30 22:50:33 heh Mar 30 22:50:51 AnOutsider: so, are you happy with what I did with your UI base for Save/Restore? Mar 30 22:51:22 no problems here heh, I wasn't married to it, just wanted to get the project going Mar 30 22:51:32 haven't tried the latest, but I did like the status appearing in-line Mar 30 22:52:30 probably aware, but messaging can't be backed up it seems. and when I try (and receive the in-use error), next time I launch mail or messaging it has me set up my accounts again Mar 30 22:52:50 that is, the accounts are there, but it's the add or "done' screen you see when you start on a fresh install Mar 30 23:23:10 AnOutsider: I wasn't aware of a problem with messaging being backed up. It seems to work here. Mar 30 23:38:58 confirmed, no issue in latest version Mar 30 23:41:01 heh, but luna did jsut restart afterwards Mar 30 23:44:09 AnOutsider: no doubt you'll have a notification of some sort when it comes back up :p Mar 30 23:44:27 hmm, none that I can see Mar 30 23:48:10 hi! I ask this this afternoon, but I will be repeated :D is there any app to show my pre location in a web service as google maps? I need to make a big travel tomorrow and need to be localizated for my friends & family Mar 30 23:48:43 like Google Latitude? Mar 30 23:48:50 i thought foursqaure did that? Mar 30 23:49:26 Both would work methings Mar 30 23:49:30 methinks* Mar 30 23:50:03 is thisk like a constant lock or only when you want it to? Mar 30 23:50:27 Kyusaku: really... I didn't use latitude never Mar 30 23:50:33 and foursquare... Mar 30 23:50:43 then, your recomendation is foursquare Mar 30 23:52:22 xota: foursquare is a social location service, where you manually post the current restaurant or place you are currently at. Mar 30 23:53:15 latitude can be automated and doesn't require you to specify a location, and works with Google Maps practically natively Mar 30 23:53:49 no Kyusaku, I know what foursquare is (but I didn't try it)... I thinked that foursaqure has a realtime position... I don't like to do the check-in Mar 30 23:53:56 I go in my car, and like to show where I am Mar 30 23:54:52 I've never seen a real-time position option in foursquare Mar 30 23:55:22 it usually required me to end a prelisted location or create one. Mar 30 23:55:34 s/end/enter/ Mar 30 23:55:36 Kyusaku meant: it usually required me to enter a prelisted location or create one. Mar 30 23:57:02 any one know where the current version of RemoteLinux Desktop can be found ? Mar 31 00:14:34 gpgp: I'm searching something as this: http://www.glympse.com/ Mar 31 00:16:47 thats crazy stuff Mar 31 00:17:02 gps is not too good for me yet. VERIZON GRRRR Mar 31 00:17:40 gpgp: really, I never try it a lot... I think that this couldn't be difficult to develop... I must test the GPS APIs Mar 31 00:18:34 i cant get the program bike pro to work, never strong enough gps signal Mar 31 00:52:11 so you think that 800mhz patch will torch any pres? Mar 31 00:53:41 eventually Mar 31 00:57:22 i got curious and installed Mar 31 00:57:34 it makes webos really snappy Mar 31 00:59:56 do you have the temperature monitor installed as well ? Mar 31 01:00:28 i installed the warning patch Mar 31 01:00:39 i don't really do anything intensive on my phone though... email and gps that's about it Mar 31 01:00:43 sometimes facebook Mar 31 01:02:10 neato Mar 31 01:48:43 * jhojho looks around for member:dbsooner or member:drnull Mar 31 01:52:13 Adora: if you install Save/Restore from Preware, and get familiar with it, then it should be a 5 or 6 line script addition to support Flickr Addict Mar 31 01:52:48 Adora: and we'll just need to run a couple of linux shell commands on a device with that app installed to check where it stores stuff. Mar 31 01:52:57 * rwhitby bbl - lunch Mar 31 01:53:13 rwhitby: sounds easy =] Mar 31 01:59:06 i'm pleased to report that overnight that email seems to have unborked itself. so no doctor for me for now.. yay Mar 31 02:06:25 Occasionally, I find it self-assuring to preach to a choir. Mar 31 02:06:27 WEBOS IS AMAZING Mar 31 02:06:36 That is all. Mar 31 02:06:36 LIES Mar 31 02:06:45 I feel like playing devils advocate Mar 31 02:06:50 ha Mar 31 02:07:11 I could not use any other device right now as my main phone.. and I use both an android phone and a blackberry every day. When i try to use the tweaks it says "IT appears your device's version of webOS has recently updated. WeboS Quick install needs to transition patches to this new version. Would you like to do that now? Mar 31 02:51:01 But when it tries to reverse my current patches it fails. Also when i go into device manager and try and uninstall my patches it fails Mar 31 02:58:14 i tried the emergency patch remover but i can't install anything, i get connection refused.
