**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Thu Jan 17 03:00:00 2013 Jan 17 09:21:59 NuttyBunny: you may try "opened" :) Jan 17 19:30:16 I have a couple off contract Palm Pre phones and wondered if there is any good that can be done with them or just recycle them? Jan 17 19:35:12 djk: are these the original Sprint Pre models? AFAIK, there's no practical way to bypass the activation process on those. So they can remain useful as long as they're attached to your original palm account, but if you register another phone on that account, they become useless. Jan 17 19:35:41 I'd love to be wrong on that BTW, as I have a couple of them myself :) Jan 17 19:38:02 that is what I figured Jan 17 19:38:25 You can use them as Wifi only devices Jan 17 19:38:30 the Sprint ones Jan 17 19:38:42 now to figure out to wipe them clean again and put them in the recycle bin Jan 17 19:38:57 Or you can send them to me for my collection ;) Jan 17 19:39:29 and what are you going to do with them? Jan 17 19:40:47 I need one from Sprint, I had to take apart the last I had because my mom dropped her Pre (Telcel one), I had to replace the screen Jan 17 19:41:33 ah Jan 17 20:32:19 NuttyBunny: welcome back :) Jan 17 20:33:03 Thanks EricBlade ! :D Jan 17 21:09:18 djk, jbrett: you can very easily use them as wifi only with no palm account Jan 17 21:09:21 just use a meta-doctor :) Jan 17 21:09:43 done it several times myself Jan 17 21:13:28 link to meta-doctor? Jan 17 21:14:10 and can you define "easily"? :) Jan 17 21:14:30 you know how to use basic linux command line? Jan 17 21:14:54 last time I looked, it was anything but "easy" to get app catalog access. Jan 17 21:14:59 really all it requires is the following of very well-written instructions. Jan 17 21:15:12 yeah, I'm plenty proficient with the command line :) Jan 17 21:15:16 jbrett: i can get app catalog access on a non-activated device within minutes, just have to build the doctor Jan 17 21:15:16 http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/Application:MetaDoctor Jan 17 21:15:19 follow that :) Jan 17 21:15:51 you can even make a Pre- (Sprint Pre) run webOS 2.1 Jan 17 21:15:56 i've done it. several times :) Jan 17 21:16:04 http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/WebOS_2_Upgrade Jan 17 21:16:30 PatrickC|School: thanks! I'll do that. I don't recall finding that page last time I was trying to do something with my old Pres Jan 17 21:16:41 it's been there for the past few years Jan 17 21:16:50 used it over 2 years ago on my original Pixi and Sprint Pre :) Jan 17 21:16:57 * PatrickC|School now runs a Sprint Pre2 still Jan 17 21:21:36 My hardware aged too much to stick with for a phone. screen crack, power switch not working. So an SIII is not in the pocket and like it but miss the webOS design. Jan 17 21:21:48 huh, I guess I just never found the page. Jan 17 21:22:17 how well does webOS 2.0 work on the original Pre? Jan 17 21:22:37 djk: yeah, I don't want to use mine as a phone, just want to give them to the kids as a camera/mp3/game player :) Jan 17 21:23:16 djk: it worked fairly well. need an OC kernel, but worked and got the job done :) Jan 17 21:23:48 why would one want webOS 2.0 on it? I have a Pre2 and a Pre3, and really prefer the UI from webOS 1.4 :) Jan 17 21:24:06 as well as the size/shape of the original Pre. Jan 17 21:24:20 i prefer webOS 2 for a few reason. text backups are one of them **** ENDING LOGGING AT Fri Jan 18 02:59:59 2013
