Mar 15 18:33:13 <Preemptive> pcworld: I think the standard advice is to uninstall patches etc until the problem is resolved, but if it's been stable for 6 years, then it would seem to indicate that it is either a 'flipped bit' type problem or wear and tear on the HW. The most likely wear is in the slider and the ribbon cable wearing or becoming brittle. If it's SW, you can try to reinstall everything, though there is also the possibility that the memory issue is also HW. However,
