Jan 13 04:56:55 why is angrostrum perfered by many beagle people? Jan 13 04:57:06 can't spell it either Jan 13 04:57:32 angstrom Jan 13 04:57:35 was stable before the most if not all others Jan 13 04:58:25 still has great support if you're not looking for the latest desktop feature on a beagle Jan 13 04:58:48 certainly don't need desktop support for what i'm using / planning them for Jan 13 05:00:57 i've looked for a side by side comparison but it dos'nt exisit Jan 13 05:01:02 or i can't find it Jan 13 05:01:42 Is it possible to send files to a beagle running Angstrom via your serial connection window Jan 13 05:03:54 if your terminal supports it chances are probably good Jan 13 05:07:08 personally I'm lazy and just use flash drives for file transfer Jan 13 05:07:54 as much as i love to troll this talk there are beers that aren't going to drink themselves.. Jan 13 05:07:57 later :) Jan 13 05:08:16 .. they might Jan 13 05:08:45 beer singularity? Jan 13 05:10:21 Yeah, but using terminal sounds fancy :( Jan 13 05:12:27 heh - mranostay can't drink beer and troll IRC at the same time. Jan 13 05:13:23 maybe the beers are at a local pub Jan 13 05:13:31 emeb_mac: hmmm talk to you guys in a bar or talk to cute asian girls that is a hard one Jan 13 05:14:11 gonna troll some girls instead :P Jan 13 05:14:12 mranostay: ah - so it's more than just beer that's involved. Jan 13 08:18:36 can some1 tel me if the GPIO pins in bone is buffered or not? Jan 13 08:20:36 can u tel me if the GPIO pins in bone is buffered or not? Jan 13 08:24:07 no. Jan 13 08:24:34 but i did hear an echo. Jan 13 20:53:58 hi! Is it possible to output tty0 to both uart and framebuffer? Jan 13 20:59:25 <_av500_> since its only SW, of course Jan 13 21:22:38 ok, my bad, I didnt replace all ttyS to ttyO Jan 13 21:26:50 _av500_: +1 Jan 13 22:18:37 just use "console=ttyS2 console=tty0" Jan 13 22:48:00 is there any Flash memeory onboard the beagle, which can be used to store a small amount of config data Jan 13 22:48:16 if i turn my SD-card into a read only filessystem Jan 13 23:47:51 hmm, still no mru Jan 14 00:06:39 mrpacket_ : there's plenty of it Jan 14 00:32:36 hi alan_o Jan 14 00:39:00 how's it going mranostay ? Jan 14 00:39:05 What's new? Jan 14 00:39:39 apartment shopping, hangovers, and pru assembly Jan 14 00:39:39 alan_o: mranostay has been experimenting with giving himself electroshock therapy Jan 14 00:40:01 prpplague: oooh.. fun :) Jan 14 00:40:21 mranostay: so one out of three sound fun Jan 14 00:40:36 well 2 can be fun depending on the company Jan 14 00:40:41 1 is never fun Jan 14 00:40:45 indeed Jan 14 00:41:20 i never thought i ever spend so much of my net income on rent :) Jan 14 00:41:21 The worst thing about shopping for housing is the feeling that I have when I _don't_ like something. I hate feeling like I'm _too_ good for something. Jan 14 00:41:37 oh that isn't a problem here Jan 14 00:41:48 you have expensive and really expensive Jan 14 00:42:12 a few ghetto places but that isn't worth $500 a month savings and my life Jan 14 00:42:15 Are you relocating, or just moving across town? Jan 14 00:42:26 looking at mountain view Jan 14 00:42:43 * alan_o gets out his California Atlas Jan 14 00:42:45 i think i'm done relocating for 5-10 years i hope Jan 14 00:43:48 I can never remember what order all those silicon valley cities go in Jan 14 00:44:15 (or which tech companies are in which) Jan 14 00:44:31 google city Jan 14 00:44:42 i live in apple city now.. that help? :) Jan 14 00:45:06 hehe Jan 14 00:45:24 prpplague: btw rents have increases 10% everywhere since i moved here.. so have fun looking around as well :) Jan 14 00:45:34 I know that Mountain view is google, but I don't know which one Apple is in. Jan 14 00:45:39 Something big is in Sunnyvale Jan 14 00:45:42 mranostay: yea i am not looking forward to that Jan 14 00:45:50 mranostay: i wish i could find something in dfw Jan 14 00:46:02 like I said though, they're all so far away from me I can't keep track :) Jan 14 00:46:05 probably going to take something short term in dfw Jan 14 00:46:11 * alan_o googles which city apple is in Jan 14 00:46:41 so you're only moving about 5 miles then Jan 14 00:47:17 within drunken walking distance of metro and castro though :) Jan 14 00:47:53 * prpplague grumbles at having to decide on hanging on a real driver or doing some practice questions for interviews Jan 14 00:48:19 prpplague: why are manhole covers round? Jan 14 00:48:26 I almost said that :) Jan 14 00:48:32 mranostay: hehe Jan 14 00:48:37 I was going to ask how they make m&m's Jan 14 00:49:07 I got asked that one time. The guy said it was from Microsoft. Who knows.... Jan 14 00:49:15 i've got to get some folks to help me out on doing the white board coding stuff, i've been to 5 interviews in the last two weeks and i froze on every one of them Jan 14 00:49:40 prpplague: it helps to practice doing some on paper Jan 14 00:49:44 or on an actual whiteboard Jan 14 00:50:12 alan_o: yea, i don't have a problem with that, it is having a couple of people watch me actually do it Jan 14 00:50:13 serious, it's a whole different brainwave path (or at least feels that way) Jan 14 00:50:23 performance anxiety Jan 14 00:50:31 hehe indeed Jan 14 00:50:34 Don't worry, it happens to lots of guys (or so I hear) Jan 14 00:50:57 hehe Jan 14 00:51:17 I think some of it is just confidence to the point of arrogance. Jan 14 00:51:20 i've done best in life when i just didn't care :) Jan 14 00:51:27 knowing that you're smarter than everyone who's interviewing you :) Jan 14 00:51:44 mranostay: yea that tends to be a good rule Jan 14 00:52:32 we should arrange an n-way video chat with prpplague and heckle his whiteboard code Jan 14 00:52:50 hehe Jan 14 00:53:02 a g+ hangout Jan 14 00:53:15 please don't invite mans Jan 14 00:53:39 hehe, I'd never want to interview with Mans :) Jan 14 00:53:50 heh Jan 14 00:53:59 i'd think prpplague would end up crying :) Jan 14 00:54:04 he'd have me crying like Dora the Explorer after being deported back to Mexico and put to work in a sweat shop Jan 14 00:54:26 vamanos! Jan 14 00:54:46 did you see the Dora the Explorer movie trailer spoof? Jan 14 00:54:57 yea i saw that one, pretty funny Jan 14 00:55:42 prpplague : what kind of code did they want you to whiteboard? Jan 14 00:57:43 CareBear\: pretty simple stuff, register manipulation via bit operations, a drawing program to that does standard shapes such as square, triangle, circle , framebuffer manipulation do things like mirror and rotation Jan 14 00:58:00 CareBear\: all very simple stuff, but i freeze every time Jan 14 00:58:54 prpplague: pseudocode at least? Jan 14 00:58:58 prpplague: is it specific, real-life stuff, like doing the first in ARM instructions? Jan 14 00:59:29 I guess the first one could potentially be just the bit math. Jan 14 00:59:42 alan_o: so far none of them have been anything realistic other than the register manipulations Jan 14 01:00:03 and-and-or-and-shift-and-mask.... do-dahh... do-dahhh... Jan 14 01:00:12 yea Jan 14 01:00:24 where's dm8tbr.... he's better than me at the songs :) Jan 14 01:01:12 i'd do a lot better if they gave me the requirements, left me alone for 15 minutes and came back Jan 14 01:01:31 but i guess they might think i picked up my cell phone and called mru Jan 14 01:01:32 yeah, but they say BS like "we want to see how you think..." Jan 14 01:01:43 alan_o: yea i heard that several times Jan 14 01:02:03 prpplague: it's all about asserting their dominance and making you feel and seem weak Jan 14 01:02:09 It's crap Jan 14 01:02:25 interviewing for a full time position is soooo much different that interviewing for a contract job Jan 14 01:02:48 most of the contract stuff they just want to make sure you references are good, and they review a lot of your previous work Jan 14 01:03:05 mainly concerned about your track record of getting things done on time Jan 14 01:03:31 yeah, I've never had a technical interview for a true contract job Jan 14 01:04:09 I interviewed with Bloomberg, and they wanted to do all the technical stuff, and that was a 1-year 40-hour "contract." I viewed it as full time Jan 14 01:04:36 They contacted me. I wasn't super excited about going to NYC for a year, but they kept saying, "just go through the interview then decide" Jan 14 01:04:56 I tell you what... being uninterested is the way to get more money. She just kept bumping it up and up Jan 14 01:06:10 Here was one of the practice problems http://pastebin.com/ckKVmFzL Jan 14 01:06:41 alan_o: hehe Jan 14 01:07:25 prpplague: well contract they can terminate or not renew. little harder to fire a full time hire :) Jan 14 01:07:54 nobody wants to risk a wrongful termination suit Jan 14 01:08:20 They were all about the stuff they do being "production code" as if my work with the Linux kernel meant that I still knew nothing about "production." Production in their mind meant agonizing over saving one stack variable. Highly uninteresting. Jan 14 01:08:46 no amount of talk about compiler optimization mattered either Jan 14 01:08:53 oh well, all that crap is SEP now :) Jan 14 01:09:27 mranostay: indeed Jan 14 01:11:41 CareBear\: btw, you made any progress tracking down those issues with the latest openocd ? Jan 14 01:14:58 prpplague: you should seriously think about practicing on whiteboard/paper, for a couple reasons. 1: being used to doing code not on a keyboard will reduce one more layer of unfamiliarity in the interview. Instead of feeling unfamiliar, it will feel like "this is something I've done before, and can do again." Don't underestimate the psychological impact of little stuff like that. If your mind is set up with "I only do crappy on whiteboar Jan 14 01:14:58 ds," then you're going to be fighting against that the whole time. 2: it will help you to minimize worrying about little things that don't matter, like "did I leave enough physical space for X" (since most people don't code linearly)? You'll have more practice on how to get up there and just make the code, and it will boost your confidence. People freeze when they lose confidence. It's kind of like how when you practice for giving a talk Jan 14 01:14:59 , you do it actually talking. You don't do it by just saying it in your head. It's different. It causes different parts of the brain to light up. Same with code on paper/board. Jan 14 01:17:59 alan_o: yea i purchased one yesterday for the house Jan 14 01:18:50 cool :) Jan 14 01:52:11 prpplague: while going through similar path I read that book : Linchpin, Are You Indispensable ... gave me some perspective on the non-technical side Jan 14 01:52:56 mnt_real: thanks for the reference i'll have a look Jan 14 01:53:37 prpplague: yes just browse through, it helped me to see things a bit differently, might be interesting for you as well Jan 14 01:53:37 mnt_real: most of the non-tech side and also on the hardware side i am good. there is just something about coding in front of people that gives me troubles.... Jan 14 01:53:59 * prpplague orders Jan 14 01:54:31 prpplague: I found that most of the times people like you are simply very creative and interview rooms are not the right places to measure this Jan 14 01:57:15 mnt_real: looks interesting, i ordered a copy Jan 14 01:57:32 prpplague: hope you will like it ;) Jan 14 01:57:37 :) Jan 14 02:13:10 prpplague: just work the TX charm :) Jan 14 02:13:53 mranostay: hehe Jan 14 02:16:49 they have purple 10 gallon hats? **** ENDING LOGGING AT Mon Jan 14 02:59:59 2013
