**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Sat Apr 27 02:59:58 2013 Apr 27 03:00:23 i think the only thing that'll stir up more emotion than a religios argument is an android vs ios argument. Apr 27 03:01:05 beaglebone seems cute Apr 27 03:04:17 *religious lol. wtf. Apr 27 03:04:37 ketas, i stuffed mine into a teddy bear, so it's cute and huggable. Apr 27 03:05:22 "openfurby"? Apr 27 03:06:46 lol I think it's a mental game Apr 27 03:06:51 competition Apr 27 03:07:23 tends to suspend common sense in a lot of cases Apr 27 03:09:07 or, it's just that some percentage of any population has crazies. Apr 27 03:09:16 and they're posting tonight. Apr 27 03:09:52 at $35 i consider the device disposable. Im not gonna cry if something better comes out a day/week/month/year after i bought it Apr 27 03:10:26 so i think the fanboi-ism is misguided and/or misplaced Apr 27 03:11:08 at $35, i'm going to assume it's near the bottom in terms of raw technological might. Apr 27 03:11:42 it does video REALLY well Apr 27 03:11:50 cant stress that point enough Apr 27 03:11:51 :) Apr 27 03:11:56 REALLY! well Apr 27 03:12:00 does "once you go black, you can't go back" apply to beaglebone? Apr 27 03:12:00 wait, how well? Apr 27 03:12:07 but it was kind of designed for that Apr 27 03:12:18 hdmi1.4 Apr 27 03:12:19 cec Apr 27 03:12:30 1080p/60+ decode/encode h264 Apr 27 03:12:36 3d tv support Apr 27 03:13:27 3d tv? wouldn't that mean 1080p/120Hz? Apr 27 03:13:42 at what bitrate!? Apr 27 03:13:51 nope, there are side by side modes Apr 27 03:13:55 and top/bottom Apr 27 03:14:11 eww Apr 27 03:14:22 i have no idea what bitrate it maxes at Apr 27 03:14:35 but its just stupidly fast from all the testing i have done Apr 27 03:15:11 the RPi is actually 2 processors. the arm and the videocore Apr 27 03:15:22 the videocore (GPU) actually boots the system Apr 27 03:15:23 wait, so is all 3d tv side by side or top/bottom? Apr 27 03:15:57 iirc, hdmi1.4 specifies frame interleaving too Apr 27 03:16:06 what about 1080p/50Hz for independent 24fps Apr 27 03:17:10 if its a mode in hdmi 1.4, then the pi supports it Apr 27 03:17:19 i guess top/bottom makes sense. detail will be mostly the some with horizontal displacement. Apr 27 03:17:25 err..interlace. Apr 27 03:17:35 i'm just wondering about 3d tv in general, not pi. Apr 27 03:17:46 gpu boots the system? Apr 27 03:17:52 sounds so wrong Apr 27 03:18:07 the videocore is a stand alone cpu/gpu Apr 27 03:18:07 why? a processor is a processor. Apr 27 03:18:21 there are phones out there using it without the ARM Apr 27 03:18:55 so, if you're not using the video stuff, can you use the gpu as a second processor? Apr 27 03:19:06 if you have the tools Apr 27 03:19:19 they are NDA though Apr 27 03:19:32 so u have to be a broadcom customer Apr 27 03:19:55 is broadcom only weird manufacturer in embedded world? Apr 27 03:19:56 it does 16x16 SIMD apparently Apr 27 03:19:58 does linux support multiple different cores yet? Apr 27 03:20:02 i know it's in the works. Apr 27 03:20:15 never seen horizontal/vertical SIMD before Apr 27 03:24:32 no worse then the DSP booting the system Apr 27 03:44:01 hello all Apr 27 03:54:48 Hey there. Apr 27 05:39:25 Hello. Can iPad charger be used to power up beaglebone? Apr 27 05:40:14 probably Apr 27 05:40:39 I'd prefer to use a regular 5V power supply with barrel connector Apr 27 05:56:05 Is there any performance impact when power up via USB instead of barrel connector? Apr 27 06:04:57 I don't remember for sure, but yes probably Apr 27 06:09:03 sharma: it can be. Apr 27 08:24:22 <_av500_> ahoi Apr 27 08:25:27 _av500_: moin moin Apr 27 10:56:53 Hey everyone. Is there somebody who can run 'openssl speed aes-256-cbc' on a beaglebone black for me? Apr 27 10:57:32 i can. Apr 27 10:58:41 That would be nice! Apr 27 11:02:30 why? Apr 27 11:02:59 So I can compare the aes-256 performance to that of the raspi Apr 27 11:20:02 aes-256 cbc 8616.12k 9155.76k 9209.34k 9266.00k 9243.31k Apr 27 11:20:06 from a dual a9 Apr 27 11:20:18 aes-256 cbc 11922.16k 12921.45k 11893.04k 12586.64k 13154.09k Apr 27 11:20:21 single a8 Apr 27 11:20:37 what does r-pi say? Apr 27 11:21:26 interesting the a8 is "faster" Apr 27 11:21:51 likely due to clocking Apr 27 11:22:00 neither of these is a bnie though Apr 27 11:29:50 rapi: aes-256 cbc 14065.19k 15722.46k 15989.25k 16122.69k 16039.94k Apr 27 11:41:12 Crofton: did openssl speed -evp aes256 -multi 2 ? dual-core isn't used by openssl otherwise Apr 27 11:47:36 that helps :) Apr 27 11:48:37 I wonder if there are hw accelerators involved Apr 27 11:51:14 <_av500_> they dont want us to know Apr 27 12:05:18 hmm, i wonder when i will be having my bbb now Apr 27 12:13:35 a15: aes-256 cbc 84027.42k 86509.89k 87969.71k 88329.90k 88282.45k Apr 27 12:20:51 a9: aes-256 cbc 44946.66k 46665.13k 47408.64k 47581.18k 47625.56k Apr 27 12:20:54 both dual Apr 27 12:23:12 a15 looks about 2x faster Apr 27 12:23:36 a9 is 1.2GHz, a15 1.7GHz Apr 27 12:24:11 <_av500_> mru: how much does the i7 reach? Apr 27 12:24:15 for the heck of it- Apr 27 12:24:25 AMD Opteron 1218, dual core: aes-256 cbc 104269.95k 111390.81k 113444.01k 274726.23k 276668.42k Apr 27 12:24:34 mru: have you just got some a15 hardware? Apr 27 12:24:36 (2.2GHz) Apr 27 12:24:43 <_av500_> ssvb: chromebook Apr 27 12:24:46 ssvb: chromebook Apr 27 12:25:03 the emphasis was on *just* :) Apr 27 12:25:17 I've had it a couple of weekss Apr 27 12:26:10 <_av500_> toner is empty, I need as new printer :( Apr 27 12:26:13 <_av500_> -s Apr 27 12:27:27 laptop i7 (ivy bridge): aes-256 cbc 341259.88k 362445.12k 369232.90k 371076.10k 371509.93k Apr 27 12:27:33 erp lol, my opteron is 2.6GHz not 2.2 Apr 27 12:27:52 a15 is a nice processor, with a really observable out of order instructions execution Apr 27 12:27:53 that's with -multi 8 Apr 27 12:28:42 does openssl use avx? Apr 27 12:30:46 and a8: aes-256 cbc 24155.27k 25788.74k 26511.45k 26702.17k 26755.07k Apr 27 12:30:59 1GHz Apr 27 12:31:23 Crofton|work: what a8 did you run that on? Apr 27 12:31:33 overo Apr 27 12:31:43 3730 Apr 27 12:31:53 beagle-xm here Apr 27 12:32:06 so how come mine's twice as fast? Apr 27 12:32:13 dunno Apr 27 12:32:26 if the numbers are symmetrical it usually isn't being helped by hardware (except on x86* where AES is part of the ISA) Apr 27 12:32:38 i.e. for varying packets sizes the same performance Apr 27 12:32:52 gcc-4.5 I think Apr 27 12:32:59 4.7 here Apr 27 12:33:09 example -> 1252.76k 5035.73k 20052.14k 79539.20k 363457.19k for an accelerated powerpc Apr 27 12:33:50 and it'll also give insane unrealistic numbers if openssl isn't run with -elapsed :) Apr 27 12:34:11 because it's offloaded and it almost doesn't use any cpu time Apr 27 12:34:51 Does the bb have a hardware accelerated aes feature? Apr 27 12:35:00 (enabled via -evp) Apr 27 12:35:26 the kernel needs patching or extra modules for openssl to use the hardware crypto Apr 27 12:35:55 http://cryptodev-linux.org/ or http://sourceforge.net/projects/ocf-linux/ Apr 27 12:36:20 mru, Crofton: some distros may be not enabling assembly optimizations in openssl - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openssl/+bug/1042162 Apr 27 12:36:42 some meaning ubuntu? Apr 27 12:37:36 it should be already fixed in ubuntu, not so sure about debian Apr 27 12:37:59 openssl for arm only has optimizations for v4+ so it should be default Apr 27 12:38:20 lol, welcome to the real world :) Apr 27 12:38:38 it helps in any other superior ARM, but hey, some people might want v3 compatibility :) Apr 27 12:38:48 ssvb: don't you mean the warped ubuntu world? Apr 27 12:39:49 So whats the "final" performance on the beaglebone? Apr 27 12:40:16 Cause the first value posted was actually slower than the rpi Apr 27 12:40:31 that would be suspect :) Apr 27 12:40:41 I'll have to poke at tsome things Apr 27 12:41:04 the beagle-xm numbers shouldn't be too far off Apr 27 12:41:52 mru: meaning that we can't assume that something is guaranteed to be properly done just because it is obvious Apr 27 12:42:19 I always assume things will be fucked up Apr 27 12:42:36 ok time to finish the cryptodev-linux integration in buildroot :) Apr 27 12:43:05 the 3730 memory interface is quite different from the 335x though Apr 27 12:43:15 don't know how memory-bound that benchmark is Apr 27 12:48:14 "engineering is simply applied sarcasm" Apr 27 13:31:57 have I ever mentioned I hate dlna? Apr 27 13:33:33 if not, you probably should again, just to make sure Apr 27 13:33:50 mru: you're not alone btw Apr 27 13:34:38 right now I'm mostly hating that it only works on a single subnet Apr 27 13:34:44 how fucking retarded is that? Apr 27 13:36:04 I hate the fact that they hand picked the weirdest and most confusing words ever to name 'client' and 'server' Apr 27 13:36:11 that too Apr 27 13:39:30 if I want to use it, I suppose I'll have to rearrange my network into some even more convoluted topology Apr 27 13:40:08 mru: or deploy IPv6 maybe Apr 27 13:40:23 [kernel] koenkooi pushed 1 new commit to 3.8: http://git.io/cUkDNg Apr 27 13:40:23 kernel/3.8 3d4a1a4 Koen Kooi: 3.8: update to 3.8.10... Apr 27 13:40:32 I don't think the gadgets I'd want to use with it support ipv6 Apr 27 13:40:43 and that still wouldn't solve the single subnet problem Apr 27 13:41:25 but I can set up vlan for the media stuff and bridge it to the wifi Apr 27 13:41:51 koen: hi, are you around? Apr 27 13:42:28 might be a good idea to firewall off the commercial devices anyway Apr 27 13:43:13 I set up ipv6 at home Apr 27 13:43:34 the fact that I can forget about NAT is nice Apr 27 13:43:44 nat is not the issue here Apr 27 13:44:01 I know, I'm just pitching for ipv6 :) Apr 27 13:44:06 I have a public /29 ipv4 subnet should it come to that Apr 27 14:11:05 koen, i branched off your meta-sigrok github repo and wanted to ask you if you had any more plans with it. Thanks in advanced Apr 27 15:00:29 Squix: Is sigrok working OK these days? When I tried it a year ago it was still early days and it was badly broken, so I'm still using the original OBLS software. Apr 27 15:00:55 fiola, bout to have a milestone release Apr 27 15:01:02 Oh neat Apr 27 15:01:16 still has its bugs but iam quite pleased with the work Apr 27 15:01:31 Time to give it a try then. Apr 27 15:01:41 hop on #sigrok for more info if needed Apr 27 15:01:51 Thanks Apr 27 15:01:54 np Apr 27 15:10:29 Good morning beagleboard! Apr 27 15:12:05 * Squix hides his raspberry pi Apr 27 15:16:25 Hello Beagleboard members - it's a great day to help GSoC applicants! Apr 27 15:17:10 koen: have you had a chance to see vmayoral 's application for ROS? Apr 27 16:13:24 hi guys. is there a working port of XBMC for a beagleboard yet ? Apr 27 16:13:37 there has been for a while. Apr 27 16:13:44 opkg install xbmc Apr 27 16:14:56 nice. how about a image that boots straight into it ? Apr 27 16:17:08 something like this would be cool: http://www.raspbmc.com/ Apr 27 16:18:02 * mru thought beagle was intended for tinkerers Apr 27 16:18:43 we could put it to other uses :) Apr 27 16:19:08 mru: xbmc fans show up everywhere Apr 27 16:19:46 I guess it's because nobody ever sold a ~50$ xbmc box Apr 27 16:21:20 i just want to watch movies on my beaglebone ;) Apr 27 16:21:47 hopefully <720p movies. Apr 27 16:21:58 XBMC can make it a gateway tinkering device Apr 27 16:22:11 oHm2: +1 Apr 27 16:23:13 just like RPi has drawn in a lot of people like myself that have learned a great deal by having the end goal of a XBMC media center. Apr 27 16:24:24 cwicks: I'll go through the applications tomorrow Apr 27 16:27:28 so the BBBlack generally won't do 720p with its GPU? Apr 27 16:27:35 (or am I reading that wrong) Apr 27 16:29:37 woohoo my BBB's are "out for delivery" Apr 27 16:30:28 or are they out on devilry? Apr 27 16:31:02 hmm would have to port BSD over for that Apr 27 16:31:17 hasn't that been done? Apr 27 16:31:38 has it? Apr 27 16:31:46 that might be a good thing to tinker with on my 2nd one :) Apr 27 16:36:31 <_av500_> Spirilis: the GPU does not do video Apr 27 16:36:36 <_av500_> its different from the rpi Apr 27 16:36:47 <_av500_> in short: no xbmc on bone Apr 27 16:36:59 <_av500_> if you want a media center, move along Apr 27 16:39:34 gotcha Apr 27 16:39:41 yeah I didn't buy it for video :-) Apr 27 16:40:03 there are any number of cheap boards capable of playing video Apr 27 16:40:14 How is the OpenCV performance on the black? Apr 27 16:40:27 a coworker is interested in a media center though so I'll have to tell him to just roll with the RPi Apr 27 16:40:41 I wouldn't tell him _that_ Apr 27 16:40:59 allwinner or exynos would be better choices Apr 27 16:41:16 well he already has one (but hasn't yet integrated it into his video setup @ home yet), that's why I'm saying :) Apr 27 16:41:32 I think my hype about the BBB was getting him interested in ditching his rpi Apr 27 16:44:08 so yeah generally speaking, the BBB's video decoding is wholly dependent on the CPU, video won't help too much? but the GPU can do 3D Apr 27 16:44:26 er s/video won't help/GPU won't help/ Apr 27 16:44:37 3D and OpenCV anyway Apr 27 16:45:23 jkridner|work seems to be on a roll Apr 27 16:45:32 :-) Apr 27 16:45:40 got on a plane and finally booted my computer... Apr 27 16:45:47 although I need to shut down any second. Apr 27 16:46:25 ptan: I find the OpenCV performance to be "quite nice". I think you should provide some benchmark if you want to know anything more useful. Apr 27 17:48:08 hi emeb_mac ! Apr 27 17:48:20 Hello, mranostay Apr 27 18:01:00 So, there's a beagle-gsoc channel, but nobody ever responds. :-p Apr 27 18:05:55 i wonder what kind of esd protection i need when connecting "antennas" (you know, all wires) to beaglebone io pins... likely this could cause circuit inside soc to fail, resulting (partially) useless device Apr 27 18:07:51 Hey, are there any gsoc mentors hanging around here? beagle-gsoc is dead. Apr 27 18:08:10 i suppose i am one Apr 27 18:09:38 mranostay: lol, you suppose? :-p Apr 27 18:10:00 Sounds reluctant. :-) Apr 27 18:10:15 never commit to anything is my motto :) Apr 27 18:10:33 I'll subscribe to that Apr 27 18:10:41 but don't count on it Apr 27 18:10:45 +1 Apr 27 18:10:56 tsquar3d: you the last post on the list by chance? Apr 27 18:11:16 lol.. won't tell your significant other that, I promise. Apr 27 18:11:31 what SO? Apr 27 18:11:33 Last post in the list? Apr 27 18:12:50 ... don't follow. :-/ Apr 27 18:14:10 mranostay: Apr 27 18:14:18 ^^^ Apr 27 18:25:49 I am not sure if I talked to you yesterday, mranostay (I think mru was here) but I had an idea for a gsoc about using the beaglebone as an all-in-one data aquisition/analysis/visualization module. :-) Apr 27 18:28:10 i was drunk likely Apr 27 18:28:31 tsquar3d: what sort of data? Apr 27 18:28:57 mranostay: Any sort of data that you have a sensor for. Apr 27 18:29:22 is nodejs getting involved?.. ) Apr 27 18:29:34 mranostay: It very well could. :-) Apr 27 18:29:38 gawd Apr 27 18:29:56 mru: you see jkridner is corrupting the youth Apr 27 18:30:05 gawd = good or gawd = "oh.. my ... gawd" Apr 27 18:30:52 mranostay: indeed he is Apr 27 18:31:10 I haven't spoken with jkridner Apr 27 18:31:58 Anyhow, as an undergrad I was a physics major -- and we used NI's DAQ and -- gah -- LabView for this sort of thing. Apr 27 18:32:17 It was stupid expensive and stupid -- err -- stupid. Apr 27 18:32:57 Anyhow, the beaglebone could be a great cheap alternative if only it had a sexy software suite for this sort of thing built in. ;-) Apr 27 18:33:54 -- that is, of course, if raspberry pi doesn't beat you to it first -- which, given how much they've taken off in schools in the UK and how they are slowly creeping over to North America, you could very well be facing that reality. :-/ Apr 27 18:36:00 * mranostay looks for beer Apr 27 18:36:08 <_av500_> this is not about beating anybody to anything Apr 27 18:36:24 * mranostay beats _av500_ Apr 27 18:36:34 <_av500_> mranostay: let me remember this Apr 27 18:38:47 _av500_: so you are into Nikon or Canon cameras? :) Apr 27 18:39:03 Are you sure, _av500_ ? Because, let's face it, educators love buzz-words. If RPI becomes the buzzword for data acquisition, universities won't look twice at an alternative. ;-) Apr 27 18:39:34 I've spent the last two years doing my masters research with educators... that's how they work. Apr 27 18:40:31 * ogra_ thought he saw _av500_ with a contaflex at linuxtag ... (years ago) Apr 27 18:41:51 ogra_: pics or it didn't happen Apr 27 18:42:41 haha Apr 27 18:43:04 So, would anyone be interested in mentoring a graduate student in creating a data aqusition / analysis / visualization suite for the beaglebone? Apr 27 18:43:05 :-) Apr 27 18:44:26 have you written a prosposal? Apr 27 18:45:51 mranostay: Working on it. ;-) Apr 27 18:46:33 mranostay: I've been told that I should be sure to have a mentor interested upon submission. Apr 27 18:49:56 tsquar3d: have you looked at sigrok? Apr 27 18:50:07 and/or iio? Apr 27 18:51:00 koen: Are these people or projects? Apr 27 18:51:26 Ah.. n, Apr 27 18:51:28 nm Apr 27 18:51:34 Sorry, I know what you're talking about. Apr 27 18:53:18 I am looking to create something tailored exactly to the beaglebone -- and perhaps something that supports 3D visualization -- Blender, perhaps. :-) Apr 27 19:06:54 So, mranostay, what do you think? Apr 27 19:44:50 Is anyone else having redirect loop issues with GateOne on the BeagleBone Black? Apr 27 20:15:22 Just got my beagle black and on my screen is been saying automatically logging in for the last 5 mins Apr 27 20:15:34 Is this normal Apr 27 20:16:20 normality is an illusion Apr 27 20:17:48 Yeah Apr 27 20:20:02 My question still stands Apr 27 20:20:47 ahh the fresh smell of a new root command prompt Apr 27 20:22:01 Grr... it is so hard to get a hold of a beaglebone in the UK Apr 27 20:22:32 * mru has one :) Apr 27 20:22:41 limited edition A4 Apr 27 20:22:46 mru: You're in the UK I take it? Apr 27 20:22:50 I am Apr 27 20:23:02 lol... my empathy to you, sir. Apr 27 20:23:07 Or maam. Apr 27 20:23:21 I'm right on the edge of it though Apr 27 20:23:26 southampton Apr 27 20:23:58 Yeah.. West Midlands here -- born and raised in USA, though. Apr 27 20:24:10 where in the US? Apr 27 20:24:23 Wisconsin Apr 27 20:25:02 never been Apr 27 20:25:16 Cold. Dry. Apr 27 20:25:20 That's all you need to know. Apr 27 20:25:47 Apparently the snow just finally melted there. :-p Apr 27 20:25:54 I know where it is on a map Apr 27 20:26:36 had a puzzle map of the usa as a kid Apr 27 20:26:43 (dad's american) Apr 27 20:26:53 That has to be interesting. Apr 27 20:27:34 ... your dad being American, that is. Apr 27 20:27:47 my dad is American. :) Apr 27 20:27:54 (mom's not tho) Apr 27 20:28:06 Both my parents are American :-p Apr 27 20:28:21 ... and so am I. :-p Apr 27 20:28:40 hard to be anything else with those parents Apr 27 20:28:47 I try. Apr 27 20:29:06 depends a bit on where you grew up I suppose Apr 27 20:29:10 According to some, I'm not a "natural born citizen" since both folks aren't. Apr 27 20:29:39 I don't see why it should matter whatsoever where you're born Apr 27 20:29:46 Good thing I wasn't born in Hawaii... Apr 27 20:30:04 you don't want to be president? Apr 27 20:30:08 Well, I am a natural born citizen (American), but I am on a visa in the UK -- afterwards I'll be living in Canada. :-D Apr 27 20:30:42 Wife's family is Canadian. Apr 27 20:30:46 mru: do you have US citizenship? Apr 27 20:30:49 yes Apr 27 20:31:10 mru: Dual-citizenship, then? Apr 27 20:31:21 yes Apr 27 20:31:36 never quite understood how that works. Apr 27 20:31:52 Cool.. hopefully you started out with a British citizenship, because it's a real pain getting one. :-p Apr 27 20:32:03 emeb: What part? Apr 27 20:32:14 my other nationality is swedish Apr 27 20:32:15 tsquar3d: dual-citizenship. Apr 27 20:32:26 Yeah, which part of dual-citizenship? Apr 27 20:32:40 mru: GAH! THE PAPERWORK!!!! THE PAPERWORK!!!!!! Apr 27 20:32:59 swedish is better than british in some ways Apr 27 20:33:02 to the team who made this thing, excellent work guys! Apr 27 20:33:32 e.g. cheaper visa to china, should you wish to travel there Apr 27 20:33:38 * mrpackethead is a citizen of the world Apr 27 20:34:09 mru: i dont' need visa to go to china Apr 27 20:34:15 they let some people in and out without issue :=) Apr 27 20:34:42 Well, you don't need a visa, just a passport. Apr 27 20:35:01 for places like shenzhen they issue an insta-visa at the border Apr 27 20:36:06 And if you are a european citizen it's open borders. Apr 27 20:36:24 ... err... not to china.. but to the rest of europe... Apr 27 20:36:24 Yea. Apr 27 20:36:43 yes, the eu is open to all Apr 27 20:37:29 Yeah, I'd say of all the places I've been (which really isn't that many) the US is the hardest to get into. Apr 27 20:38:40 Is there a good reason why this beaglebone is so spendy? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BB-BONE-000-Circuitco-Kit-Dev-Beaglebone-Cortex-A8-/360622972815?pt=UK_BOI_Electrical_Components_Supplies_ET&hash=item53f6cddf8f Apr 27 20:39:36 no idea Apr 27 20:39:41 why would you buy one off ebay? Apr 27 20:40:08 mru: Because I don't know where else in the UK to get one. Apr 27 20:40:18 element14/farnell Apr 27 20:40:25 I suppose I could order from adafruit and wait forever for it to come from the states. Apr 27 20:40:51 Ah.. yes. Apr 27 20:40:52 Derp. Apr 27 20:42:38 ... although if I get a gsoc position they provide you with a black edition, right? Apr 27 20:42:56 ... cuz I've been thinking about ordering one. Apr 27 20:44:48 Gah.. but fresnel will not have them until june! :-( Apr 27 20:45:05 don't believe the estimates Apr 27 20:46:13 :-/ Apr 27 20:47:41 Maybe I should just get it from Adafruit... at least I know then that it will be here in a week or two or so. Apr 27 20:48:16 Grrr... raspberry pi.... grumble.. Apr 27 20:49:04 Fructose is bad for you. Apr 27 20:49:40 Aaaand out of stock. :-p Apr 27 20:51:12 RPi has never been in stock, not since launch, you're always on the waiting list at the export site, although it's short from Farnell these days. RS still long I think. Apr 27 20:51:50 Using the business site, it might be in stock. Apr 27 20:51:59 I have a RPi. Apr 27 20:52:09 It's kinda rubbish. Apr 27 20:52:21 s/kinda// Apr 27 20:52:57 It's rubbish. Apr 27 20:53:14 Overhyped and selling like hotcakes. Apr 27 20:53:18 I have the original, it's dreadful. Overheats its LAN9512 chip, the USB dies from endpoint exhaustion when you add just 3 devices, and even when it's working, it loses USB events. Bad hardware. Apr 27 20:53:45 yup Apr 27 20:54:13 Yeah.. like I said before, it's become a buzzword with educators and so universities and schools are scooping them up. Apr 27 20:54:58 Well fresnel has the original beaglebone.... but they are £62.57 Apr 27 20:55:44 They're nice, but obviously BBB is better at half the price. Apr 27 20:56:02 * mranostay is back with bleach and beer Apr 27 20:56:19 ... yep. Apr 27 20:56:29 mranostay: mind bleach? Apr 27 20:56:35 Hey mranostay, welcome back... thanks for the beer. Apr 27 20:56:57 * tsquar3d hails from Wisconsin originally... so it'd better be good. Apr 27 20:56:59 * fiola takes the bleach and continues the housework Apr 27 20:57:01 mru: no the spray kind... hoping to get at least some of my deposit back Apr 27 20:58:10 although you could probably spray it in your head Apr 27 20:59:45 ... no stock at uk.mouser.com Apr 27 21:00:51 tsquar3d: You know it's for volume release in early May? You'll be very lucky to find any from the pre-volume release. Apr 27 21:00:53 beeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrr Apr 27 21:01:25 Way to crush my dreams. Apr 27 21:01:43 Maybe someone is selling their BB on ebay at half price. Apr 27 21:02:30 Adafruit is selling them. Apr 27 21:02:42 Or was. Apr 27 21:02:45 lol Apr 27 21:02:49 Yep.. out of stock.. Apr 27 21:02:52 agmlego: they sold out last night Apr 27 21:03:01 Ah. Apr 27 21:03:13 Well, I think I will just wait and see if this gsoc thing goes through. :-) Apr 27 21:03:14 I recommend being patient then. Apr 27 21:03:32 the sooner you order, the sooner you shall receive Apr 27 21:03:49 mru: in theory Apr 27 21:03:59 Speaking of, mranostay, what do you think of my gsoc proposal idea? Apr 27 21:03:59 Love the screenshot on Adafruit with the BBB held in Limor's black-fingernails :-) Apr 27 21:04:19 Indeed. Apr 27 21:04:21 image* Apr 27 21:04:21 one of a kind Apr 27 21:04:27 fiola: I nearly chitted myself when I realized that was a dude's hands. Apr 27 21:04:29 She hasnice nails. Apr 27 21:04:40 tsquar3d: Eh? Apr 27 21:05:13 tsquar3d: Limor Fried is female, last I heard... Apr 27 21:05:17 Oh.. lol... ha ha... Apr 27 21:05:19 Well no reason a guy can't have painted fingernails. Stereotypes are for dweebs. Apr 27 21:05:25 Woops.. wrong person. Apr 27 21:05:52 But I assume in the absence of contrary evidence that it's Limor Apr 27 21:06:00 tsquar3d: You know, Limor Fried, AKA LadyAda, proprietorof Adaf ruit Industries. Apr 27 21:06:13 this channel is getting close to public shaming zone Apr 27 21:06:13 Wow this along time for the new image from Sd Apr 27 21:06:15 d Apr 27 21:06:16 agmlego: Yeah.. I know of whom you speak. Apr 27 21:06:32 fiola: Torrone does not generally wear nailpolish, and Becky does not usually take product photos. Apr 27 21:07:44 the real question is, what do female cross-dressers wear? Apr 27 21:07:51 agmlego: It was a reasonable guess Apr 27 21:08:01 fiola: I agree. Apr 27 21:08:03 will a case for a bone fit a bone black? Apr 27 21:08:07 Yes. Apr 27 21:08:11 thanks Apr 27 21:08:24 But you will probably want to cutr a hole for the extra ports. Apr 27 21:09:56 I was thinking about this dude: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2j_ELN3LnU Apr 27 21:09:59 From sparkfun. Apr 27 21:10:02 :-p Apr 27 21:10:11 Ah, so wrong company entirely. Apr 27 21:11:00 lol... give me a break.. I was just on the sparkfun website. Apr 27 21:11:00 :-p Apr 27 21:11:19 ;-P Apr 27 21:11:27 They're sold out, too. :-( Apr 27 21:11:36 Not really surprising. Apr 27 21:12:29 agmlego I am suprised Apr 27 21:12:59 woglinde: You are? Apr 27 21:13:03 yes Apr 27 21:13:07 And.. I have no problem with dudes wearing nail polish! I've done so myself. :-p Apr 27 21:13:17 I did not thought It will sell this good Apr 27 21:13:32 after all have classic beagle and bones Apr 27 21:15:10 woglinde: Except for the ones who do not. Apr 27 21:15:22 Or the ones that need more power out of a bone-sized device. Apr 27 21:15:48 and after all other bought rpi Apr 27 21:15:49 Wow I am amazed how long it takes for the SD card to wrote to the Emmc on the black for a new image Apr 27 21:15:50 Price is king. Make the price below the radar, and everyone will buy one on a whim. Apr 27 21:17:01 I can't wait.. for real real. Apr 27 21:17:06 Sorry write because its now finish yet I gone maybe 30 mins Apr 27 21:17:18 Not Apr 27 21:17:20 Lol Apr 27 21:19:06 woglinde: The Pi holds nothing against the new bone. Apr 27 21:19:14 Except being $10 cheaper. Apr 27 21:19:18 Seriously, the bbb hardware is PRIMED for data collection... it just needs some nice software to hold it all together. :-) Apr 27 21:19:47 * agmlego is going to use the one on its way from adafruit for robotics. Apr 27 21:19:58 Pi is not $10 cheaper. Have to compare like with like, and add an SD card to the price of Pi at the very least. Apr 27 21:20:58 And the Pi hardware support is crap. Apr 27 21:21:51 I mean, as far as interfacing with shields / capes / other hardware. Apr 27 21:21:52 BBB works with zero extra accessories needed if you tether it to PC. Pi won't work that way. The very least it requires is SD card, k/b and monitor. Apr 27 21:22:23 if it has a kbd/monitor, it's not an embedded device Apr 27 21:22:32 ^^^^ Apr 27 21:22:36 Except when it is. Apr 27 21:22:51 And then there's the awesome touchscreen shield for bb. Apr 27 21:22:59 cape* Apr 27 21:23:17 obviously _some_ machines with an embedded computer have a display and/or keyboard of some kind Apr 27 21:23:31 Not that the 2GB onboard MMC is really that useful, at least for my purposes. Apr 27 21:23:51 Oh, I don't think the old definitions of embedded stand up anymore, with so many microcontrollers having display controllers. But Pi simply won't boot if you don't buy an extra SD card, so no, it's not cheaper. Apr 27 21:25:22 Although its price doesn't really bother me. Its broken hardware does. Apr 27 21:26:39 That and the pi is not made by texas instruments... :-D Apr 27 21:27:15 TI does have a good attitude to documentation. Apr 27 21:27:43 That and their processors are quality. Apr 27 21:28:11 I've fallen in love with the PRUs. Haven't used yet, still reading. Apr 27 21:29:21 ... and their calculators will break the floor before it breaks if you drop it. Apr 27 21:30:02 Heh, that's what I say about my old Nikkormat FT2. It can be used as a floor tile strength tester. Apr 27 21:30:26 Drop it on your foot -- breaks every bone in your body. Apr 27 21:30:47 But for calculators, I'm in the HP camp with RPN Apr 27 21:30:57 I forgive you. Apr 27 21:38:05 tsquar3d: I surfed off your Youtube link looking for pcDuino specs, but sparkfun makes it damn hard, lots of pages with feature lists but no proper specs or datasheet. Apr 27 21:38:34 fiola: Yeah, not too interested in pcduino, TBH. Apr 27 21:38:57 Well I need to know what something is before I know if I'm interested. Apr 27 21:39:16 Yeah, I can't really tell you much about it... Apr 27 21:39:23 Howdy, I just bitbaked a new systemd-image in anticipation of receiving my Black on Monday. I booted it up on an original BB with an audio cape plugged in. I installed alsa-utils and aplay'd a wav file of a man speaking I've been using for testing. The voice was completely covered with static. I changed some of the levels in alsamixer and it got a bit better but I could never get the static to completely go away. I booted my old Apr 27 21:39:23 3.2.42 image SD and it played wonderfully. Any idea what the issue could be with this fresh build? Apr 27 21:40:46 tsquar3d: I see from the picture that it's a 1GHz Allwinner A10, so it's in the BBB ballpark. But can't even see how much RAM it's got. Apr 27 21:49:17 .. and it's not made by TI. :-p Apr 27 21:49:31 Kind of a fanboy, if you can't tell. Apr 27 21:55:28 Is anyone else having redirect loop issues with GateOne on the BeagleBone Black? Apr 27 21:59:17 hello. I was wondering which beagle board I should buy to be most suitable for a robotic project Apr 27 22:07:33 RoboFlop: black? Apr 27 22:08:08 So, anyone p layed with the ti launchpad? Apr 27 22:08:43 Thanks mranostay...is it the same processor as the xm do you know? Apr 27 22:10:16 first time using a microcontroller, second time using linux, 3rd time usinf irc so bit of a noob :) Apr 27 22:19:07 tsquar3d: i have one that haven't done anything with Apr 27 22:19:29 Was the beaglebone black supposed to ship with a 4GB microsd? Apr 27 22:19:34 no Apr 27 22:19:39 only 2GB Apr 27 22:19:45 emmc Apr 27 22:19:53 no SD card Apr 27 22:20:10 ok, that is what I though but when reading the quickstart I was confused by the "The BeagleBone will boot Linux from the provided 4GB microSD card" Apr 27 22:20:13 mru: or is the emmc 4GB? :) Apr 27 22:20:21 * mranostay has an early rev Apr 27 22:20:23 the eMMC is supposed to only be 2gb Apr 27 22:20:23 the emmc is 2GB afaik Apr 27 22:20:28 mranostay: I gotta get a hold of one. :-) Apr 27 22:20:40 I just received mine and in the process of booting it up Apr 27 22:21:02 My first beagle product Apr 27 22:24:42 After installing the drivers and booting the beagle am I supposed to see a new network adapter that has a 192.168.7.0 network on it? Apr 27 22:25:18 or am I supposed to hard code my IP over to 7.0 network to set it up Apr 27 22:27:50 Hmm.. anyone know how to program an MSP430 without code compozer studio? Apr 27 22:28:30 butterflies Apr 27 22:28:42 tsquar3d: IAR Workbench. Apr 27 22:28:51 Exinor: 192.168.7.2 Apr 27 22:28:52 iar, eeeew! Apr 27 22:29:12 Is that GNU compatable? Apr 27 22:29:40 ...nope Apr 27 22:31:38 I don't even care if it has an IDE, I just want to program the thing! :-o Apr 27 22:31:41 RoboFlop: To be clear I should not see a usb network adapter as part of my driver install though thus I will need to move my IP over correct? Apr 27 22:32:10 tsquar3d: Hackaday had a thing with msp-gcc and I think OpenOCD. Apr 27 22:32:15 tsquar3d: I suggest Google. Apr 27 22:32:28 agmlego: I have been asking google. :-/ Apr 27 22:32:49 ask more vigorously Apr 27 22:33:06 Ask harder!!!!1 Apr 27 22:33:29 tsquar3d: http://www.43oh.com/2010/11/a-step-by-step-guide-msp430-programming-under-linux/ Apr 27 22:33:32 I have mps-gcc, will have to look at OpenOcd Apr 27 22:33:35 don't just ask, demand Apr 27 22:33:44 tsquar3d: Found by Googling for "MSP430 programming" Apr 27 22:33:56 ... Apr 27 22:33:59 sigh Apr 27 22:34:13 Yeah, literature reviews are a challenge for me. Apr 27 22:34:36 tsquar3d: I suggest getting better at that. Apr 27 22:34:49 90% or more of engineering is knowing how to use Google./ Apr 27 22:35:03 agmlego: Agreed. Apr 27 22:35:18 At the engineering thing.. I am actually pretty decent with google. Apr 27 22:35:33 Thank you very much. Apr 27 22:35:38 Apparently not... ;-P Apr 27 22:36:09 * tsquar3d is not amused. Apr 27 22:36:17 the trick with google is to search for the answer, not the question Apr 27 22:36:23 ^^^ Apr 27 22:36:40 I know these things... I was on my way to it. Apr 27 22:36:59 sometimes knowing too much about a technology can make something harder than it needs to be... Apr 27 22:37:15 I was all "code compozer studio alternative" Apr 27 22:37:32 knowing too much certainly makes things more annoying Apr 27 22:37:33 And google was all -- no, dude.... Apr 27 22:37:42 sorry dave, can't do that Apr 27 22:37:48 And we wept... to be so alone. Apr 27 22:38:07 "we ... alone", does not compute Apr 27 22:38:43 ... not a LOTR fan, I take it. Apr 27 22:39:00 I've read the books Apr 27 22:39:05 seen the films Apr 27 22:39:19 TI also does a high-end Launchpad using a Cortex-M4F, £9.94 from Farnell. So ST's STM32F4-Discovery has competition! Apr 27 22:39:23 why didn' they just summon the damn eagles at the _start_? Apr 27 22:39:39 mru: Don't. Even. Go. There. Apr 27 22:40:28 http://uk.farnell.com/texas-instruments/ek-lm4f120xl/lm4f120-stellaris-launch-pad-eval/dp/2192061 Apr 27 22:41:19 See.. that's what arduino has over launchpad -- the MSP430 is kind of annoying to figure out how to program. Apr 27 22:42:36 tsquar3d: In contrast, the LM4F is just another Cortex-M4F, so there's tons of generic info already available for it. Apr 27 22:44:30 Well... I have MSPGCC installed.. now I just have to figure out how to use it to program my ezChronos. Apr 27 22:45:47 /c/c Apr 27 22:46:02 Hmm.... found "openChronos" Apr 27 23:08:35 "TI-RTOS is provided with full source code and requires no up-front or runtime license fees." "TI-RTOS is available today on select devices, including ARM Cortex-M4 microcontrollers and C2000™ dual core C28x + ARM Cortex-M3 microcontrollers." Apr 27 23:08:56 TI sure isn't holding back. I think they've declared war. :-))))) Apr 27 23:10:17 If only I could figure out how to program this damned watch... Apr 27 23:10:32 Time is overrated. Apr 27 23:12:11 But the msp430 is not. :-) Apr 27 23:12:31 Heh Apr 27 23:13:43 Honest name :P Apr 27 23:15:12 mspdebug rf2500 "prog spifftimecode.elf" tsquar3d Apr 27 23:15:37 there is a msp430-gcc for the beagle? Apr 27 23:16:53 or did you compile it up yourself? Apr 27 23:17:20 Rickta59: Not on the beagle. Apr 27 23:18:03 http://codepad.org/p7VjZjPD Apr 27 23:18:05 I get that. Apr 27 23:18:43 you need to write some spifftimecode.c and compile it into an elf :) Apr 27 23:19:06 Ah.. okay.. then, I have no idea what I am doing :-) Apr 27 23:19:07 lol Apr 27 23:20:25 i don't think people have done much with those watches Apr 27 23:20:43 Rickta59: Well, they're not exactly user friendly. :-/ Apr 27 23:20:45 i put it on and my g/f called me a dork ... it went back in the box and i haven't looked at it since Apr 27 23:21:17 depends i think they are kind of friendly but i've spent a bunch of time with them Apr 27 23:21:32 Ha.. well, please enlighten me! Apr 27 23:21:34 although i haven't really done much with that chip Apr 27 23:21:45 Well, it's used in the launchpad as well.. Apr 27 23:21:56 DO you work for beagleboard.org? Apr 27 23:21:58 you are going to run into a wall of limited code examples for the watch Apr 27 23:21:59 no Apr 27 23:22:25 there is a lot of code to get you started if you are using an msp430 launchpad Apr 27 23:22:28 43oh.com Apr 27 23:23:12 i was thinking a BBB might make a nice gateway computer for a bunch of msp430s Apr 27 23:24:18 Nice. Apr 27 23:24:39 Well... I have a couple of ideas as well.. will be applying for the GSoC. Apr 27 23:26:07 Rickta59: Do you have an example of how to compile and load to ezchronos? Apr 27 23:26:16 i don't Apr 27 23:26:22 have you looked on the page for that chip Apr 27 23:26:31 usually they provide a zip file of examples Apr 27 23:26:43 just go to the ti.com site and put in the chip # Apr 27 23:30:17 Rickta59: Newb question... how do you make an elf from c code? Apr 27 23:32:30 msp430-gcc -o foo.elf -mmcu=yourcpu foo.c Apr 27 23:33:04 -mmcu=yourcpu? Apr 27 23:33:07 Hey, that's my cpu, use your own! Apr 27 23:33:20 what is your cpu? CCSOMETHINGSOMETHING Apr 27 23:33:24 lowercase Apr 27 23:33:41 cc430f6137? i wasn't paying attention Apr 27 23:33:45 .c Apr 27 23:33:48 ... Apr 27 23:33:56 * agmlego is apparently failing at IRC today. Apr 27 23:34:13 Oh.. yeah.. gotcha Apr 27 23:34:14 #43oh lots of msp430 fans there Apr 27 23:34:32 Rickta59: Good idea. :-) Apr 27 23:37:52 I may wind up ditching arduino for the launchpad ;-) Apr 27 23:38:51 Ditch it for the BBB, except for low power apps Apr 27 23:39:43 Not all embedded apps *need* a Linux system on the side, but they're not harmed by having it there. Apr 27 23:40:02 And it sure makes life easy. Apr 27 23:40:04 Ha. Can't wait for that either... but I don't think I'd put them on the same calibur. Apr 27 23:45:33 ls Apr 27 23:45:37 Woops. Apr 27 23:46:25 You all are not a terminal. Apr 28 00:50:21 mourning Apr 28 00:54:55 ka6sox: Did you lose someone? Apr 28 01:00:41 tsquar3d, my youth? I lost it somewhere around here...have you seen it? Apr 28 01:01:08 Sorry to say, but no. Apr 28 01:01:49 what good are you? Apr 28 01:02:01 :) Apr 28 01:04:10 tough crowd... Apr 28 01:04:32 :-p Apr 28 01:04:56 too many days in a row of work. Apr 28 01:05:03 Well.. I've been trying to program my stupid ezchronos..... and no dice. Apr 28 01:05:15 What's work? Apr 28 01:06:11 heh Apr 28 01:07:23 its that thing you do to pay for student loans for the rest of your life. Apr 28 01:07:37 Anything interesting? Apr 28 01:07:50 depends. Apr 28 01:08:56 Ha. On what? Apr 28 01:18:07 tsquar3d, on your definition of interesting...today was not "fun" Apr 28 01:18:25 ka6sox: Ha, I meant -- do you do anything interesting? Apr 28 01:23:11 today I got chased by a Mountain Lion and a Rattlesnake...does that count? Apr 28 01:24:44 I would say if you like played with a beaglebone today that'd be interesting Apr 28 01:25:03 * Spirilis has been playing with a BBB today Apr 28 01:25:16 Spirilis: How did you get one already? Apr 28 01:25:32 tsquar3d: ordered from newark.com the day it was announced, within an hour or 2 Apr 28 01:25:42 Nice Apr 28 01:25:43 just arrived today Apr 28 01:26:07 okay...then it was boring today... Apr 28 01:26:28 (the snake had a bad day however...) Apr 28 01:26:47 I don't know if I should order mine from farnell or not.. Apr 28 01:26:59 They say they won't have anything until June... Apr 28 01:27:01 :-/ Apr 28 01:27:39 ka6sox: You play with BB much otherwise? Apr 28 01:30:11 Does anybody know if there is currently a straight forward way to power motors and other PWM stuff using the BBB? Apr 28 01:32:46 Also, are PRU's the only way to achieve that? Apr 28 01:34:26 While running non-realtime linux they'll make it easier. Apr 28 01:37:17 so there are currently other ways, but implementing code on the PRU's would improve the control Apr 28 01:37:30 is that right? Apr 28 01:38:49 tsquar3d, yes, but in relation to FPGA/CPLD stuff currently but what really interests me is working iwth the PRU subsystem to give the Bone that "edge" over other platforms for RT. Apr 28 01:39:40 ka6sox: Oh? Do you work for beaglebone? Apr 28 01:40:16 I mean beagleboard.org Apr 28 01:40:28 nope... Apr 28 01:42:08 I see possibilities for the bone as a inexpensive platform to create new things. Apr 28 01:42:22 Here here. Apr 28 01:44:36 where can I learn the differences between IIO, PWM and PRUs for controling stuff ? Apr 28 01:44:47 google? Apr 28 01:45:32 ka6sox: Ditto for me. It's somewhat unique in having those PRUs, going to make communications offload very interesting. Apr 28 01:45:53 yup Apr 28 01:46:33 ka6sox: And radio amateurs should be especially interested, since it'll do everything a TNC can do through nothing more than a modem. Apr 28 02:19:21 yup Apr 28 02:23:09 so add a GPS cape and off you go with APRS Apr 28 02:24:30 or Fly one to the Edge of Space. Apr 28 02:25:35 How high was it that commercial grade GPS is allowed to work again? I know it's not high. Apr 28 02:26:28 thats old school. Apr 28 02:27:54 It's high altitude and high speed not just altitude. Apr 28 02:28:47 Some places claim the limit is 900 knots and 60,000 ft. Apr 28 02:29:18 Hmmm, you sure? They're so paranoid that they'd prolly want to prevent a high-altitude sloth from bringing a bomb in. Apr 28 02:30:28 naw Apr 28 02:30:40 Ah, WP confirms what you just said, roughly: "All GPS receivers capable of functioning above 18 kilometres (11 mi) altitude and 515 metre per second (1,001 kn) or designed, modified for use with unmanned air vehicles like e.g. ballistic or cruise missile systems are classified as munitions" Apr 28 02:31:00 I'm just worried they might send a DF4 towards Seattle and "miss" Apr 28 02:31:08 Haha Apr 28 02:31:24 Oh wait: "but some receivers stop operating even when stationary. This has caused problems with some amateur radio balloon launches that regularly reach 30 kilometres (19 mi)." Apr 28 02:34:03 Doesn't apply to non-US GPS supplied by other countries. Although I guess some will do likewise if they're intending to sell in US. Apr 28 02:36:01 Wow, a complete GPS message take 1.5 mins to transmit. No wonder GPS takes so long to get a fix. Apr 28 02:36:08 Gah, typo Apr 28 02:36:14 12.5 mins Apr 28 02:42:00 the signal is *below* the noise threshold... Apr 28 02:42:46 without DSP to correlate it...its just "noise" Apr 28 02:43:56 Similar to how spread spectrum can extract symbols from below the noise floor. Apr 28 02:44:49 Coding gain, as opposed to antenna gain. Apr 28 02:45:44 Ie. the noise, or anything unwanted, just doesn't pop out of the correlator. **** ENDING LOGGING AT Sun Apr 28 02:59:58 2013
