**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Tue Mar 18 02:59:59 2014 Mar 18 03:00:15 I see. I am still looking for the data sheet. No luck up to this time. I have the red one, not the common blue one. Mar 18 04:46:36 SeanMark: On LCDs, the RS pin (instruction / data) selection is sometimes referred to as A0. Not sure about your particular display, but this is what it means Mar 18 04:47:57 I see. Thanks! I am working on displaying something on the TFT display. I see that tutorials for the TFT displays are rare for the BBB Mar 18 05:18:37 Guys, is it possible to install Arduino libraries in my BBB? Mar 18 05:27:34 <_av500_> different CPU architecture Mar 18 05:27:49 <_av500_> but there are arduino type projects for ARM Mar 18 05:27:59 <_av500_> check "energia" or so Mar 18 05:35:10 I see2. thanks. Mar 18 05:35:32 I am trying to follow this http://learn.adafruit.com/1-8-tft-display/testing-the-display but on a BBB. no display atm Mar 18 06:03:17 Does anyone have a sample program for a TFT display for BBB? I need one for learning purposes Mar 18 06:10:39 interesting... I don't think I ever had a warm-reset-insensitive crash before... Mar 18 06:15:02 SeanMark: what kind of display? Mar 18 06:15:04 what interface? Mar 18 08:54:22 @av500 I am working on a 1.8 TFT SPI 128*160 display. I tried some arduino tutorials but still no luck. Mar 18 08:55:24 I just want to have a simple display so that I have some basic knowledge on how to program with the BBB to 1.8 TFT. does anyone have any sample code? Mar 18 08:55:41 people use that nokia display Mar 18 08:55:58 https://www.google.com/search?q=nokia+lcd+beaglebone Mar 18 08:56:06 is there a good howto "setup a crosscompile environment for beagleboard xM"? build system is debian wheezy Mar 18 08:57:45 I have already ran that display, the 'chessboard, dog, world map wd hello world, etc'. I would want to try another display which is the TFT. Mar 18 08:58:11 ah Mar 18 08:58:16 but both are SPI, no? Mar 18 08:59:45 I am not sure, wait. let me google what SPI means. :)) am new to this bbb -.- Mar 18 09:01:59 if they are both SPI, is the coding and logic still the same? Mar 18 10:06:14 Hi! Mar 18 10:47:51 SeanMark: it depends heavily on the specific display. Mar 18 10:48:12 Does the display come with any docs/have docs online? Mar 18 10:48:14 SeanMark: read its datasheet, figure out what commands it needs, write them through sPI. Mar 18 10:50:32 I will look again. the only datasheet I found was of the QDTech which I believe is somewhat/fully different? Mar 18 10:50:53 so you dont know what display you have? Mar 18 10:51:01 av500:sorrey Mar 18 10:51:09 SeanMark: how shall we know? "1.8 TFT SPI" is certainly not a precise model identification. Mar 18 13:41:06 is there a cheap camera like the picam that can be used for the beaglebone black? I want to be able to put a beaglebone black on a hexbug spider along with a camera to use with opencv. Mar 18 13:41:26 no Mar 18 13:41:31 there is a camera cape Mar 18 13:41:37 but the BBB does not have a CSI port Mar 18 13:41:41 like the rpi has Mar 18 13:41:56 mistawright: I've seen a project that interfaced a cheap cam via PRUs Mar 18 13:42:13 PRU or GPMC like the camera cape does Mar 18 13:52:15 Does anyone have a good link with 'passing time with spi frame buffer' video? Mar 18 16:54:16 hii Mar 18 16:54:20 you are encouraged to engage people here, but there is also a more focused discussion on GSoC at #beagle-gsoc Mar 18 16:54:51 ok.thanks Mar 18 16:55:09 we find some students are nervous at engaging the larger community until they have a bit more experience, but I certainly hope you will bring your GSoC ideas here too. Mar 18 16:55:20 can i disclode my idea? Mar 18 16:55:28 jaseel: hopefully you already have some strong ideas yet are open to suggestions. Mar 18 16:56:38 "beagleboard based realtime streaming server" thats my idea Mar 18 16:56:53 what are you streaming? Mar 18 16:57:07 sorry ,vedio? Mar 18 16:57:40 how is that different from running VLC on a beagleboard? Mar 18 16:57:42 simply, broadcast vedio from a camera to internet Mar 18 16:57:56 vlc Mar 18 16:57:59 gstreamer Mar 18 16:58:01 already done Mar 18 16:58:10 ohh Mar 18 16:58:38 i will come with another idea Mar 18 16:58:43 eeeeekkkkk gstreamer Mar 18 16:58:44 * ds2 runs Mar 18 17:10:50 * ogra_ is surpriaed that nobody proposed adding ACPI to the BBB yet as GSoC project Mar 18 17:19:19 "BB Based Weather station" How was it? Mar 18 17:23:28 clear Mar 18 18:25:47 ogra_: its a linaro gsoc project Mar 18 18:26:20 not a redhat one ? Mar 18 18:26:22 ~ Mar 18 18:57:15 finally got my BBB, can't believe how tiny it is - way smaller than I thought it would be Mar 18 18:58:31 Nickel. Mar 18 19:00:30 Hi friends ! Mar 18 19:18:45 Greetings! I need some pointers for connman on the BeagleBone Black. I have a slow dhcp server in the office, so rather than pulling a 192.168.1.X ip address, eth0 gets a 169.254.X.X address. How can I disable this behavior and wait for a proper DHCP address? Mar 18 19:19:20 DHCP attempts will still be made despite temporarily getting an auto-ip address. Mar 18 19:19:47 * jkridner googles: http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.network.connman/5011 Mar 18 19:21:46 Guest26579: also: https://lists.connman.net/pipermail/connman/2012-January/008089.html Mar 18 19:25:38 Thanks for the links. Seems like they have the same problem (binding to 169.254.X.X and never getting a proper address). Oddly, udhcpc returns almost immediately with a working address. Mar 18 19:27:16 Guest26579: you could also set a static IP for connman Mar 18 19:27:25 I did that some while ago and I forgot all about how Mar 18 19:27:36 the connman dhcp client is a fork of udhcpc Mar 18 19:33:53 hey guys, i'm trying to use a temp sensor and a pot, but they both need adc gnd. i only see one listed on the pin layout. can i safely use another gnd? Mar 18 19:34:48 Use the same one. Mar 18 19:36:12 i'd considered that, but i'm new to this... didn't want to fry my board after only a week Mar 18 19:36:49 Nope, AGND is just the ground reference for the ADC(s). Mar 18 19:37:12 So that is what you should use as a reference for all things being read by an ADC. Mar 18 19:38:03 cool, thanks Mar 18 19:52:17 so, to connect both the adc grounds, can i wire both into an empty row on the breadboard, and a third wire from that row to the board itself Mar 18 19:57:08 sure. Mar 18 19:57:54 note that breadvoards can add a lot of noise to a circuit, so keep that in mind if you notice strange readings. Mar 18 20:10:11 jawbreaker: there's also an onchip thermal sensor, that I just tried to bring up: bandgap_ctrl Register (offset = 448h) Mar 18 20:10:34 jawbreaker: I read values from 0x2f to 0x36 from that ADC Mar 18 21:58:44 Hello Mar 18 21:59:20 I need to discuss my idea for GSoc for BeagleBoard. Mar 18 21:59:33 Can I talk to anybody for consultation? Mar 18 21:59:57 electro_: #beagle-gsoc Mar 18 22:00:41 Okay thanks. Mar 18 22:45:27 i made a bad mistake and plugged my bbb in to a 12v supply for about 10 seconds yesterday Mar 18 22:46:01 it still seems to boot ok but i seem to be having some SPI bus issues - could it be related? Mar 18 22:46:10 does it have over voltage protection on the power supply? Mar 18 22:56:48 Is there a good tutorial or resource for learning how to get SPI devices working in a straightforward manner. I'm trying to interface with a max31855 thermocouple measurer which uses the protocol in python. Mar 18 22:57:05 I've found a nice library that calls it but am afraid I'm doing something wrong on the spi side Mar 18 22:57:46 they just work...what do you doing right now? Mar 18 22:58:18 toss in a driver, get it attached either via DT or a board file depending on the version of the kernel Mar 18 22:59:07 ds2: so far I've just tried to use the adafruit-bbio library via this script: https://github.com/onetinov/bbb_max31855 Mar 18 22:59:25 oh scripts...blah Mar 18 22:59:33 which BB is it? Mar 18 22:59:40 It looks like I may have to do some things on the linux command line to get it set up to be able to use it though Mar 18 22:59:42 BBB Mar 18 22:59:59 I'd recommend doing things in the kernel Mar 18 23:00:24 I been meaning to get a max31855 talking on a BBC Mar 18 23:00:54 ds2 is there a good resource for learning how to do things in the kernel Mar 18 23:01:28 I personally recommend reading the kernel sources...it is plain C Mar 18 23:01:34 but others may disagree Mar 18 23:01:58 ds2: oops wife here must leave...will come back later Mar 19 00:40:39 anybody has issues with libcrypto.so.1.0.0 on the BBB ? latest debian image / Mar 19 00:41:20 even if i have libssl installed still do not have the .so Mar 19 00:41:56 wrong lib :p Mar 19 00:42:09 try cryptopp or crypto++ Mar 19 00:42:10 i crosscomiled ADB Mar 19 00:44:27 mhmh Mar 19 00:51:08 hello Mar 19 00:51:16 need some help with bbb Mar 19 00:51:28 anyone can help a NOOB? Mar 19 00:56:22 HamRadioPA: not if you dont tell anyone what the problem is Mar 19 00:57:54 i have a bbb and i put on the ubuntu-precise-12.04.3.armhf-3.8.13-bone30.img on a sd card. I can get unit to boot but when I try to connect with ubuntu and temppwd unable to connect throught ssh. Mar 19 00:58:24 sorry new to the IRC chat Mar 19 00:58:36 I am a real NOOB!!! Mar 19 00:59:14 my computer is ubuntu 13.10 and i have putty installed Mar 19 01:00:10 I don't own a BB but I think if you just flashed a new image, you need to enable SSH Mar 19 01:00:12 * TehCaptain cracks a 22 ounce beer Mar 19 01:00:21 or start the SSH server or whatever' Mar 19 01:00:45 how I connect to it to enable ssh Mar 19 01:01:16 I think there should be a way to connect a Keyboard and a monitor right? Mar 19 01:01:27 Again, this is me who doesn't own a BB, I own a BBB Mar 19 01:02:04 Oh wait Mar 19 01:02:16 You have a BBB as well, my bad, I didn't read your question properly Mar 19 01:02:25 i am running it headless and keyboard and mouse less. Mar 19 01:02:32 HamRadioPA, http://learn.adafruit.com/ssh-to-beaglebone-black-over-usb/overview Mar 19 01:02:38 There you go mate, that has everything you need Mar 19 01:02:45 ssh is enabled by default on BBB .. either on usb or ethernet Mar 19 01:02:53 I see, thanks for clarifying that Mar 19 01:04:10 thanks Mar 19 01:04:35 moving from a full windows to a bbb linux is a trip Mar 19 01:04:46 Is there anything that you have to do to enable the GPIO's for the adafruitGPIO library to be used Mar 19 01:04:52 Well, moving from full Windows to Linux is a trip let alone BBB Mar 19 01:05:31 I moved to osx recently and it was almost the same magnitude as going from windows to linux... Mar 19 01:05:52 however this BBB has a lot more lowlevel stuff that you have to deal with than a typical ubuntu setup Mar 19 01:06:16 i understand that. Mar 19 01:06:27 you don't really wanna put ubuntu on a bbb .. you can .. but its a bit heaviweight Mar 19 01:07:10 i want to use the BBB for Amateur radio FLdigi to be exact I have the ubuntu on the micro sd card. Mar 19 01:07:23 Yeah I think Angstorm is recommended Mar 19 01:07:24 i am use to ubuntu also. Mar 19 01:07:45 HamRadioPA: tried debian then? Mar 19 01:07:53 I'd recommend debian .. angstrom is a bit .. different. Mar 19 01:07:57 nope just ubuntu Mar 19 01:08:07 is not ubuntu build of debian? Mar 19 01:08:11 im using that because i was used to ubuntu on pc and debian on raspberry pi Mar 19 01:08:27 yea it is, sorta Mar 19 01:08:38 they're related Mar 19 01:08:53 as far as i understand it (im a bit of a noob myself) debian is the underlying operating system that ubuntu is added onto Mar 19 01:09:14 ubuntu and debian are very different projects Mar 19 01:09:20 but they use a similar core Mar 19 01:09:52 well... of course... but i mean in a general sense.... like its all linux just differently.... Mar 19 01:09:54 debian is historically a bit behind .. and ubuntu seems .. well .. somewhat the opposite lately Mar 19 01:10:14 ubuntu is focussed on making linux user-friendly Mar 19 01:10:25 I wouldn't say its a purists' linux lol Mar 19 01:10:26 that is what I like Mar 19 01:10:51 linux is new to me and i know the software I want to run the author has a ubuntu as a test machine. Mar 19 01:10:51 its quite heaviweight though with gnome, etc .. especially for an embedded system Mar 19 01:11:04 the BBB is no PC Mar 19 01:11:16 HamRadioPA: most of the command line stuff in debian is the same as ubuntu ive found... and my BBB has never had a monitor plugged in so none of the desktop stuff is relevant anyway Mar 19 01:11:37 the desktop stuff just slows it down .. bein a single core Mar 19 01:12:04 I'm a bit confused about all of the device tree overlaying...do I need to do anything to use GPIO pins using the adafruit library to simulate spi Mar 19 01:12:17 i am use to CLI interfaces I have the ubuntu loaded on the micro sd card not yet on the emmc Mar 19 01:18:19 clueful, what does the tutorial say? Mar 19 01:18:41 veremit and Danl thanks for teh help. I am able to ssh to my device now. I am going to keep my ubuntu on the microsd card Mar 19 01:18:54 Thanks because Debian believes in rock stability Mar 19 01:18:57 off to get the usb stuff up and running. Mar 19 01:19:05 darksector: which tutorial should I check Mar 19 01:19:23 clueful, http://learn.adafruit.com/setting-up-io-python-library-on-beaglebone-black/installation-on-ubuntu Mar 19 01:19:25 That's one Mar 19 01:19:40 I am sure there are apis for the other languages too, you just need to google for them Mar 19 01:21:43 I've been through that one its not totally clear if its necessary for plain gpio Mar 19 01:32:09 \quit Mar 19 01:47:36 hmm...it won't boot up....3 solid led's any clue? i didn't flash or anything, it was working fine and I sent a reboot command Mar 19 02:08:46 你好 Mar 19 02:27:51 Guys, is there a TFT library included in the latest angstrom? i have 3.8.13 Mar 19 02:29:28 SeanMark: tft library? Mar 19 02:30:07 yes? The one you use for SPI and TFT display? Mar 19 02:31:06 http://arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/TFTDisplayText#.Uyj_c6iSzcQ in this link the code for arduino has a #include TFT.h . I am trying to change the code inorder to work for BBB Mar 19 02:31:27 SeanMark: well generally you don't want to do that from userspace Mar 19 02:31:36 SeanMark: there are some existing kernel drivers to handle that Mar 19 02:33:42 I see. I am new to this BBB. Where can I learn about the 'kernel drivers' for the SPI TFT display? Mar 19 02:34:07 SeanMark: google is generally helpful Mar 19 02:34:17 SeanMark: what is it you are planning to do with the display? Mar 19 02:35:52 I just want to learn how to display texts/texts with color since yesterday. The only tutorials I found was that of Arduino, I tried converting the codes and following the wire setup, still no luck. Learning purposes in short. Mar 19 02:37:40 SeanMark: the reason there are no direct tutorials is that handling things like a spi display under an operating system is completely different than on a microcontroller which runs the code directly Mar 19 02:38:24 SeanMark: http://elinux.org/images/1/19/Passing_Time_With_SPI_Framebuffer_Driver.pdf Mar 19 02:41:22 prpplague: I see. I will go over that material again. I don't have a good background with microcontrollers. Hopefully by the end of this day I could print some random stuff Mar 19 02:41:44 SeanMark: i wish you luck, but i doubt you will Mar 19 02:42:05 SeanMark: i would really suggest you start with something smaller such as blinking LEDs and hooking up push buttons Mar 19 02:44:35 prpplague: I am done with that. That has been cover by the 'Getting started with BB'. by make.. I can't believe that displaying is this hard. *sigh Mar 19 02:48:39 SeanMark: hehe what getting started with BB guide did you use? Mar 19 02:50:54 prpplague: this one: http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920028116.do it has some small projects. Mar 19 02:53:44 SeanMark: not familair with the contents of that one, it talk about using bonescript or something? Mar 19 02:54:07 SeanMark: ahh right python and javascript Mar 19 02:54:19 SeanMark: yea that really isn't going to help you much Mar 19 02:57:34 prpplague: I hope there are more books available for BBB. I am already circling around the net. Looking for clues to where to start. haha Mar 19 02:57:56 SeanMark: this is something have a problem understand with BBB Mar 19 02:58:04 SeanMark: you don't look for books on BBB Mar 19 02:58:11 SeanMark: you look for books on linux Mar 19 02:58:16 SeanMark: linux is linux is linux Mar 19 02:58:47 SeanMark: running on the bbb or RPI, or cell phone, or super computer **** ENDING LOGGING AT Wed Mar 19 02:59:58 2014
