**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Wed Jun 25 02:59:58 2014 Jun 25 05:53:22 Any ideas how to get into a BBB that doesn't let me ssh, without using a direct keyboard connection? I've successfully ssh'ed in when running Angstrom and Ubuntu on the internal memory, but Debian booting off of SD rejects the ssh connection for some reason. Is serial-over-USB an option? Running Debian on my desktop (in case it matters). Any help is greatly appreciated! Jun 25 05:55:18 To clarify, I know it can be fixed by using a keyboard directly once, but I would need to buy one. Wanted to see if there were other options first. Jun 25 06:37:09 hay Jun 25 07:04:05 <_av500_> dgirsh: stock debian? Jun 25 07:04:09 <_av500_> ssh over ethernet? Jun 25 07:09:15 _av500_: im using the wheezy image from here: http://www.armhf.com/boards/beaglebone-black/ Jun 25 07:10:02 _av500_: pretty sure it's stock. i've tried ssh over both ethernet and usb. ethernet says connection refused. usb hangs. Jun 25 07:10:58 <_av500_> why not use the sw from the beaglebone site: http://beagleboard.org/latest-images Jun 25 07:11:06 <_av500_> I have no idea who and what armhf is Jun 25 07:14:21 i'll give that a try, thanks. looks like lazily googling for a non-eMMC flash version led me astray. didn't realize there was one on the beaglebone site. Jun 25 07:14:39 <_av500_> yes, its cleverly hidden, I agree Jun 25 07:22:37 any ideas how to flash the bootable image with linux? the official instructions are windows only. armhf has instructions for their images which involve manually making boot/data partitions and downloading a separate uboot image. my gut says that there's a simpler way for the official debian image... Jun 25 07:23:19 is it as simple as: dd if=debian.img of=/dev/ bs=4M ? Jun 25 07:23:31 dgirsh: yes Jun 25 07:24:29 vvu: awesome, thanks. Jun 25 07:24:36 wish i went here earlier... wasted a lot of time yesterday :) Jun 25 07:43:12 Hi, I am a newbie ..... looking for beagleboard xM capes for my centre Jun 25 12:26:06 Is this a good place to talk about kernel issues on the beagle? Wondering about a bug in my kernel logs pertaining to the omap-aes driver and DMA. Jun 25 12:28:02 ask Jun 25 12:32:47 Simply put, get the following error. http://pastie.org/9322808 Jun 25 12:32:54 is rcn-ee's 3.13 kernel for ubuntu safe with the latest debian images? or should I change completely to ubuntu on the bbb? Jun 25 12:33:35 mmarker, have you tried it without dma Jun 25 12:33:45 Reading the code, it looks like I can simply modify the device tree file to add DMA. But I don't know if things will blow up, and assuming someone who knows about omap3 did it deliberately. Jun 25 12:34:09 I know people were having trouble with usb transfers with dma enabled Jun 25 12:40:04 thurgood: why not use the kernel from the BBB debian image? Jun 25 12:40:27 gles support is required Jun 25 12:40:49 mmarker: so beagle XM? Jun 25 12:41:39 I'm not a version chaser, just need that feature Jun 25 12:42:10 mmarker: sorry, no idea Jun 25 12:42:21 you might try the linux-omap mailing list Jun 25 12:42:57 or wait for NishanthMenon here Jun 25 12:43:12 Need to get a testing module. Probably not bad either, reading the code looks like it kicks into PIO mode. Slow, but doable I think... Jun 25 12:45:06 Also have a divide by zero error in the kernel at boot on 3.14 and 3.15 - looks cosmetic, but need to track it down. Jun 25 14:43:18 im having problem mounting flash drive on beaglebone, its not showing as mounted, but device is detected, anyone have any ideas? Jun 25 14:47:20 1) do you have it configured to automount Jun 25 14:47:37 2) have you tried mounting it manually? Jun 25 14:47:53 3) what format is the drive? Jun 25 14:51:56 ok, im able to get it to mount, but every time i unplug and replug it, its not automounting, in fact if changed its dev from /dev/sda1 to /dev/sdb1 Jun 25 14:56:38 need to let it settle a little after unplugging before plugging back in probably Jun 25 15:05:30 then you can add a rule to automount in /etc/fsbtab Jun 25 15:22:21 Hi all Jun 25 15:22:29 Can I use BBB black in commercial project? Jun 25 15:22:41 is there any limitation in how many of them I can buy? Jun 25 15:22:42 :D Jun 25 15:23:20 it's nice that irc channel is running for this board Jun 25 15:23:32 unless it is a quiet one Jun 25 15:25:31 kinkazu: there are limits in how many you can buy, but it's open hardware, so you could get someone else to manufacture compatible boards... Jun 25 15:25:59 thanks for the answer vagrantc Jun 25 15:26:18 hmm, it would cost probably more Jun 25 15:26:23 to have it manufactured Jun 25 15:26:47 and the manufacturing process of bbb presented on youtube is so professional Jun 25 15:27:14 vagrantc: do you know what the limits are? Jun 25 15:27:42 kinkazu: not off the top of my head, and i haven't found the specific information after a quick search Jun 25 15:27:55 interesting Jun 25 15:28:23 but i've definitely run across it at some point Jun 25 15:28:44 yes, I have seen somewhere that there are some limits Jun 25 15:29:02 but couldn't find anything about this when I tried to find more info Jun 25 15:29:36 I am almost sure i read somewhere that becouse it is educational device, there are some limits applied Jun 25 15:29:38 http://elinux.org/Beagleboard:BeagleBoneBlack#Terms_of_Use Jun 25 15:29:42 somewhere, not on BBB website Jun 25 15:29:57 thanks for that Jun 25 15:30:00 will read through Jun 25 15:32:06 * vagrantc thinks there was something even more specific... Jun 25 15:32:10 ow, this explains everything, limits might be, but don't have to be applied, te bigegst problem I think is that they can change design at any time Jun 25 15:32:26 hmm Jun 25 15:32:45 my hunch is it won't be changing much any time soon Jun 25 15:33:03 just came out with a big upgrade, and the only difference was a larger eMMC Jun 25 15:33:03 yes, might be worth to take a risk Jun 25 15:33:14 last change from B to C is only memory size Jun 25 15:33:24 which is better Jun 25 15:33:31 for me Jun 25 15:34:03 I will ask guy mentioned in link you provided Jun 25 15:35:15 thank you very much vagrantc Jun 25 15:35:24 i will be visiting this channel more often Jun 25 15:35:46 have got some problems and I am trying to fight them alone Jun 25 16:29:52 Anyone ordered an emfest bbb from china? Jun 25 16:31:12 <_av500_> embest Jun 25 16:35:09 Indeed, my bad, wondering which is quicker order through normal channels, or use some backstreet chinese company. Jun 25 16:49:02 I have installed the RTC backup battery in my Beagle XM but I believe I have to enable its use and charging by configuring the TPS65950 module. Can anyone here help my achieve this in an Angstrom environment? Jun 25 17:28:52 hello Jun 25 17:28:58 <_av500_> world Jun 25 17:29:32 do any person here had problems with beagleboard-xm? Jun 25 17:29:43 I am with some problem related with nand memory Jun 25 17:31:52 <_av500_> what problem? Jun 25 17:38:10 u-boot dont do a full load, it stucks on DRAM: 512mb Jun 25 17:38:50 seems like it can not detect the nand memory, or something related Jun 25 17:39:27 this board is a beaglebone-xm rev B Jun 25 17:39:51 i tested the same sd-card in a brand-new beagleboard-xm rev C and it works with no problem Jun 25 17:44:54 nobody with a problem like this? Jun 25 17:47:17 victor_: A couple of things: 1. Patience is a virtue, and especially when asking for help from a volunteer channel. 2. More details on the problem, including and especially actual boot logs (in a pastebin, thanks) and other information. RIght now, we have little to nothing to go on. Jun 25 19:03:02 hey, so I accidentally fat-fingered my static IP configuration with connman on an angstrom BB-black Jun 25 19:03:21 what do I do now? I don’t have a serial adapter and these boards evidently don’t have one built inb Jun 25 19:13:56 plug in with ethernet and check the ip on the router? Jun 25 19:14:35 assuming you don't have the micro hdmi cable or ftbi cable? Jun 25 19:15:05 *ftdi Jun 25 19:36:53 thurgood: yeah neither Jun 25 19:36:59 it’s definitely in static mode Jun 25 19:37:29 have you looked at /etc/network/interfaces ? Jun 25 19:38:33 I have no remote access Jun 25 19:39:13 I guess I’ll have to find a serial cable Jun 25 19:39:26 pity theres no built-in adapter anymore Jun 25 19:47:14 if a getty was set up on ttyG0 you might be able to connect to the console via the USB-otg port. Jun 25 19:49:08 hey guys i have this hbridge, http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dual-H-Bridge-DC-Stepper-Motor-Drive-Controller-Board-Module-for-Arduino-L298N-/291099876169?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43c6e79b49 and want to control motors using my beaglebone black and c/c++ Jun 25 19:49:34 should i be able to use this controller board without a logic level converter? Jun 25 21:15:03 So chinese Embest boards, yey or ney? Jun 25 21:19:40 I'm trying to install arch on my BBB, all is well, but for the line of me I can't seem to get the usb g_ether network acting as a gateway to the outside world Jun 25 21:19:49 I've enabled g_ether, and the usb0 interface comes up consistently Jun 25 21:20:05 then I log in through the serial debug on the BBB, and this is my startup sequence Jun 25 21:20:11 ip link set usb0 up Jun 25 21:20:12 ip addr add 192.168.7.1 dev usb0 Jun 25 21:20:12 ip route add default via 192.168.7.1 Jun 25 21:20:12 route add default gw 192.168.7.1 Jun 25 21:20:24 anyone see what I'm missing? Jun 25 21:55:17 Orby917, the USB host that you're plugging your BBB into needs to be doing IP forwarding to allow the BBB to get access to the internet. Additionally, your BBB's default gw should be your computer, not itself Jun 25 21:55:59 To get internet over USB to your BBB will be something of a setup, I'd very much recommend just wiring it in to your home network over ethernet Jun 25 21:56:03 ah, so the route should be: ip route add default via 192.168.1.120 for example? Jun 25 21:57:01 KaaK: I agree, but I’d love to see detailed, repeatable instructions for doing USB internet with a Mac, just to verify that it _can_ be done. Jun 25 21:57:02 KaaK: I'd love to do that, but the BBB's ether is being removed to fit a custom Cape on there, so I don't have that as an option Jun 25 21:57:09 Orby917, its a rather complicated setup to achieve. You're going to have much fewer headaches going over ethernet and getting on to your home network like that Jun 25 21:57:19 Orby917, ahh Jun 25 21:57:31 Perhaps I'd do better to buy a usb - ethernet dongle? Jun 25 21:57:36 I still have the host side usb Jun 25 21:57:52 Orby917: I burned too many hours trying to get USB internet working. Jun 25 21:57:58 that will be much easier to set up Jun 25 21:58:14 improvnerd: I'm in the same place right now =( Jun 25 21:59:08 Orby917: How about moving the ethernet jack off board. Solder some wires to the board, and some wires to the jack? Jun 25 21:59:44 I could do that for testing, but in production the plastics don't allow for that, and I need to have easy access to ~400 of units Jun 25 21:59:48 I'd love to walk you through it, but really, it is quite involved. You're USB host (i.e. the computer you're plugging your BBB in to) will have to be configured to forward IP packets between the USB ethernet device, and its NIC. Jun 25 21:59:59 Basically your computer will have to be a NAT router Jun 25 22:00:20 KaaK: I think I've got that figured out with this link: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Internet_sharing Jun 25 22:01:24 Orby917, that is exactly what you need to do. Jun 25 22:03:00 Okay call, we'll I'll mess around with the routes Jun 25 22:03:07 okay cool.. I ment Jun 25 22:03:37 Orby917, if you're really looking to do this over 400 units, you're likely going to want to set up a DHCP server on your desktop to hand out address and routing info to your connected BBB. Dnsmasq would probably server you just fine in that regard Jun 25 22:03:55 How does the default BBB automically setup the IP address on the linux host? Jun 25 22:05:02 I know that by default the BBB is the one running the DHCP server, so you will need to kill that (it is also dnsmasq). Just get one BBB set up the way you'd like (replacing the DHCP server with a client on the usb interface) and then use that image on the rest of the boards Jun 25 22:05:07 KaaK: Good to hear, I've ran dnsmasq before for a different setup, so I'll stick with that Jun 25 22:05:29 Good advice, okay I'll try that Jun 25 22:05:37 Thanks a bunch guys, if I have another question I'll ask Jun 25 22:05:41 I really appreciate your time Jun 25 22:05:48 Orby917, best of luck Jun 25 22:10:19 improvnerd, It can be done. I run similar setup centered around a raspberry pi and a large power usb hub. The pi is setup as a nat router, and ethernet bridge (for all the usb ethernet devices) and provides internet to the BBBs over USB from the upstream network the PI is connected to Jun 26 00:50:58 I'm stuck. I'm trying to attach a USB serial dongle to my beagle bone as I have a device that needs a serial and I can't for the life of me get it to show up. I have tried 3 different USB async devices all that work on a raspberry pi but none of them seem to show up on the BBB. Where can I look to find the issue? Jun 26 00:54:28 yikes, need a linux guy Jun 26 00:54:49 Jarrett_ I might be able to help Jun 26 00:55:17 @kleewyck awe great, i got it to work but took a while Jun 26 00:55:43 my question was around making a source code make satisfy deb dependencies Jun 26 00:55:43 :) Jun 26 00:55:57 oh no Dependency issues !!! Jun 26 00:56:13 yea, i was playing with aptitude Jun 26 00:57:04 any, BBB is running HomeGenie now Jun 26 00:57:13 I'm stuck on why I can't get usb serial dongle to work .. :( Jun 26 00:57:20 next step is to control zwave lights Jun 26 00:57:21 kleewyck: powered usb hub with your serial dongles? Jun 26 00:57:40 yes Jun 26 00:57:51 also, hate to ask but did you turn it off and back on again? Jun 26 00:58:04 i have to do that for ethernet sometimes Jun 26 00:58:22 Have a hub with a USB serial and sound dongle. The Sound is seen Jun 26 00:58:23 kleewyck: plugged in before powering it on? Jun 26 00:58:51 Have tried 3 different USB serial dongles all work on the raspberry pi. All have had reboots and power cycles. Jun 26 00:58:51 usb on the BBB is sometimes finicky. Jun 26 00:59:08 kleewyck: not just power cycle, but a cold boot? Jun 26 00:59:35 how is a cold boot different then power everything down and restart? Jun 26 00:59:51 I might be doing something wrong here is why I ask. Jun 26 01:00:05 if I execute unix halt ? Jun 26 01:00:07 plug and play? what does the scan say? dmesg? Jun 26 01:00:23 kleewyck: because the actual hardware doesn't necessarily fully shut down... Jun 26 01:00:35 kleewyck: it's not hard to try it. Jun 26 01:17:30 My BBB booted up and right of the bat I could ssh 192.168.7.2 though the USB serial Jun 26 01:17:40 * vagrantc reboots with the kernel shipped. Jun 26 01:19:42 so, running 3.8.13-bone50 for a kernel, i get a usb0 network interface, but no /dev/ttyUSB0 Jun 26 01:20:17 * vagrantc rummages around for a usb dongle Jun 26 01:20:23 hum Jun 26 01:20:45 you using usb wifi? Jun 26 01:34:52 NICE! Jun 26 01:35:52 so i guess i can always hook a head and keyboard/mouse up to this thing and use it without internet Jun 26 01:49:24 Are there any closed source bits in the BBB drivers? Jun 26 02:04:01 firmware are largely blobs rather than source Jun 26 02:16:25 thurgood: Thanks, that was part of what I was wondering. **** ENDING LOGGING AT Thu Jun 26 02:59:58 2014
