**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Wed Apr 25 03:00:06 2018 Apr 25 09:03:38 alius: i got a hermes tracking number via e-mail and then it arrived after some delay Apr 25 09:43:16 shipping to me in April 2018 my foot :D Apr 25 09:46:28 I wish they get enough money to make bigger batches of gemini's soon. Apr 25 09:47:02 As at this pace the device will be super outdated before the 10 000th device ships. Apr 25 09:47:52 Or even worse for the company, though not for the backers, nokia or some other company make a better product faster. Apr 25 09:55:16 outdated? Apr 25 09:56:00 akik: Well, the specs weren't stellar to begin with and in a years time it will be in the low end of the performance spectrum. Apr 25 09:56:09 And it will be pretty hard to sell to new customers then. Apr 25 10:01:35 x27 is a deca core soc Apr 25 10:03:03 it has 4 gigs of ram Apr 25 10:04:57 Yeah, and if you compare it to new snapdragons or the thingies that apple makes it's very slow despite of that. Apr 25 10:05:33 In arm world year of performance development is still pretty long time :/ Apr 25 10:07:51 you don't expect it to run your apps in a year from now? Apr 25 10:10:24 in a sense it's already outdated because of the bad camera and no external screen Apr 25 10:12:54 I expect i will run, but the guy who thinks about buying the thing after a year will compare it to the other devices on the market. Apr 25 10:13:29 And that's a problem for planet computer's continuity. Apr 25 10:33:16 razumihin: I'm hoping that in a few years, they will come up with something better - but a similar form-factor Apr 25 10:33:42 . o ( 2 or 3 years is usually my phone cycle, but with a PDA, I think it should be longer ) Apr 25 10:34:29 I still hope that nokia or actually microsoft will make the better product :) Apr 25 10:35:52 Truth is that I wish I could have a macos device in a pda formfactor, but apple will never make that. Apr 25 10:39:42 if the gemini succeeds, maybe some big manufacturer buys it Apr 25 10:50:44 to me gemini is lightning fast.. and on sailfish it'll be even more faster Apr 25 11:41:51 It really depends on what you do with a device. i think the gemini (specs) are fast enough for all todays needs... if you use something like a big extjs company cms (like the one from my employer) even a macbook pro (i7, 3.1ghz / 16gb ram) isn't fast enough. but thats a problem with the webapp itself. Apr 25 11:42:59 maybe you get more frames on benchmark apps and a 3d game released in 6 months doesnt get full details on the gemini... but thats not the usecase for the gemini and/or doesnt matter :) Apr 25 11:58:17 Well I'm kinda spoiled with using the fastest macbooks and ipad pro's :) Truth is that I do not think that gemini is too slow for me for a long time, but I'm thinking here in the context of buyer markets. Apr 25 12:44:41 interesting that a major market for the gemini appears to be admins. i got mine because i'm a reporter and photographer, and it's a good way both to keep track of assignments and to send pictures/captions and such from assignments while on deadline. for this i think it will be well suited. probably less so for, say, gamers. Apr 25 12:49:37 Anyone who wants to create textual information is in the main target market, yes. Apr 25 12:56:49 I am an author, and intend to do a lot of writing on it. Apr 25 12:57:36 Captain_Harlock[: ditto :) Apr 25 12:58:21 I am also a sysadmin, and intend to use it for that. I will also probably use it for irc/matrix, and email. Apr 25 12:58:45 leinir: What have you written? Apr 25 13:00:59 Captain_Harlock[: So far one published short story in an anthology, and another on the way... Another one published just online. And then, of course, i've been working on that silly magnum opus that everybody seems to be doing, been doing that since six or so years now, slowly and steadily putting down words :) Apr 25 13:02:25 The published one is in this one: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/37368441-arcana :) Apr 25 13:07:14 Ah interesting. And yeah, most do seem to have that special project in progress. I used to, but now I just have many projects in progress. I have completed two books in a sci-fi series. I'm working on the third, but also some other ideas. http://dreamphase.net/books the first book is free on my website, but also available on Amazon. Apr 25 13:07:31 I wrote the first one primarily on a Sharp Zaurus. :D Apr 25 13:32:21 Well hey, your big crazy project was published, then! That is also very nifty :D Apr 25 13:34:57 Wow, that seems like it'd hurt your thumbs, that's a lot of words on a not-enormous keyboard :D Apr 25 13:37:02 Captain_Harlock: First one is free? Aaah, that's how they get you hooked! ; ) Apr 25 13:42:20 hehe, that's kinda what I'm hoping, but I also genuinely hope people like it, and want to share the story without charging them for it. Apr 25 13:42:32 thanks cos-. and regtools-hey i figure they still have a few business days left to SHIP it. receiving it is another story :) Apr 25 13:44:31 leinir: provided the keyboard doesn't hurt you hands, you can get faster at it and type a lot. For example, the blackberry priv I use now. I can type 40wpm on it, but If I use it all day, my fingers could get sore. On the zaurus, when I finished the book, I could type at 70wpm on it. I'm hopeful that I'll be able to get at least that on the gemini. Apr 25 13:45:32 Captain_Harlock[: Yeah, i'm impressed with the priv, but... yeah, not really a type-a-novel device :) Apr 25 13:46:28 * canny[m] is adding it to his Kindle download list for later, Captain_Harlock Apr 25 13:49:17 Okay. just note, it is $.99 on Amazon, and free on m site. Amazon wouldn't let me set it to free without surrendering rights. :( Apr 25 14:01:27 it's good you read the fine print, then! Apr 25 14:03:15 i too hope to get up to speed with my gemini...whenever it gets here. i can do SMS fine with my 6 year old android slider but having work email notifications enabled kills the battery on it Apr 25 14:03:38 plus then i can finally retire my series 5mx too :) Apr 25 14:17:22 How many people are planning to use something other than android on the gemini? Apr 25 14:17:53 yo Apr 25 14:18:03 End goal's Plasma Mobile for me :) Apr 25 14:18:23 As I don't have it, and haven't done testing, I'm not quite sure what my setup will be, but I'm intending to run linux instead of android. Apr 25 14:43:10 Captain_Harlock: Apr 25 14:43:14 sfos Apr 25 14:43:16 :) Apr 25 14:50:18 I am excited tog give sailfish a try. Back when I was working at Intel, I worked a little on Moblin/meego. Which became Mer, and then turned into sailfish. I don't know if the interface had anything to do with my ticket, but shortly before I left, I created an improvement ticket for the interface that used the drag method sailfish uses. I don't know if that ticket influenced it at all, but it still interests me. Apr 25 14:51:09 :) i'm using sfos for over a year on jolla c and the jolla tablet Apr 25 14:51:55 (and still maemo on a old n810 xD) Apr 25 14:52:02 I tried to get my hands on a Jolla, but wasn't able to. When they were available, I didn't have the money. Apr 25 14:52:26 I managed to get the n810wimax. sadly, There is no more wimax. Apr 25 14:53:37 meego, wasn't that maemo? Apr 25 14:54:22 yeah :( Apr 25 14:54:31 I miss my n900 Apr 25 14:55:04 gotta admit, I want to try sailfish as well Apr 25 14:58:44 I should try flashing it to my droid4 or photonQ Apr 25 16:34:25 a hickup in the matrix? **** ENDING LOGGING AT Thu Apr 26 03:00:03 2018
