Jan 01 03:00:46 n900user: it's already in extras-testing or -devel Jan 01 03:01:16 Oh sweet Jan 01 03:02:06 Must say i like this phone better than anything. Jan 01 03:03:11 I saw an app on a new htc. It would show you the stars you would see if you were not looking at the screen of a phone Jan 01 03:03:18 how do i get flv to play? Jan 01 03:04:21 Very much like the attitude program if it had a background image Jan 01 03:04:51 cool Jan 01 03:05:36 I'd like to have attitude have a dynamic background image that would work with google street view Jan 01 03:06:02 my idea was to let kids spray virtual graffitti with their n900s Jan 01 03:06:39 also sharing only with certain users Jan 01 03:07:10 but getting that kind of accuracy wouldn't be so easy imo Jan 01 03:07:38 That would be cool how to view it? Jan 01 03:07:39 or hold up phone, point to a store, and see sales, offers Jan 01 03:08:07 there is no compass Jan 01 03:08:08 device would have to recognize the surface using advanced algorithms Jan 01 03:08:15 yep Jan 01 03:08:21 so you can't easily Jan 01 03:08:32 I think the gps issues are too great for that now Jan 01 03:08:44 hey, i can dream with the rest of them Jan 01 03:09:01 gps does not give orientation Jan 01 03:09:04 actually doing stuff is hard, and results are much more modest Jan 01 03:09:11 I've never gotten the gps to work Jan 01 03:09:22 reall? Jan 01 03:09:35 yeah really Jan 01 03:09:38 even turning on network assist? Jan 01 03:09:46 outside? Jan 01 03:09:50 Yeah with net. I only let it sit for 1 minute Jan 01 03:25:21 i have a spell that helps gps, but it involves a chicken and midnight rituals Jan 01 03:26:23 and ginger, lemon, and a frying pan? Jan 01 03:26:57 i was thinking of the scene from 'The Serpent and the Rainbow' Jan 01 03:26:58 Perhaps i could help test some devel programs to speed up the process? Jan 01 03:27:32 yeah i'm running through some right now .. http://maemo.org/packages/repository/qa/fremantle_extras-testing/ Jan 01 03:28:30 http://wiki.maemo.org/Extras-testing#Packages_waiting_to_be_evaluated but read first Jan 01 03:28:55 How does the decision get made? Jan 01 03:28:57 http://wiki.maemo.org/Extras-testing/QA_Checklist and read second Jan 01 03:29:03 Sorry posted late Jan 01 03:29:26 the checklist is the key Jan 01 03:30:01 if we vote-up dodgy packages, people will install them and say 'N900 sux!' and we really don't want that Jan 01 03:30:57 +1 for use of the word "dodgy" Jan 01 03:44:37 hmm is only 30380 KB free on rootfs with only a few apps installed normal? Jan 01 05:36:58 jza: what does the N97 have to do with the N900? Jan 01 05:37:01 *nothing*! Jan 01 05:37:32 they are both phones Jan 01 05:37:35 they both have a screen Jan 01 05:37:39 and they both can scratch Jan 01 05:38:08 luke-jr: so both could have a need for a screen protector Jan 01 05:39:21 N900 is not a phone Jan 01 05:39:31 but I thought you said *projector*, so my bad Jan 01 05:53:49 jza: Zagg makes a screen protector for the N900 Jan 01 05:54:22 jza: I'm using the Zagg full body shield on my N900, it's a very good protection for the device, and it was nigh impossible to apply Jan 01 05:54:40 doesn't show any sign of peeling or a chance in hell of coming off if I wanted it to though Jan 01 06:12:09 get a list of installed packages installed on your N900, sorted by size! dpkg-query --show --showformat='${Package;-50}\t${Installed-Size}\n' | sort -k2 -n Jan 01 06:24:45 ha - the negatory response to connecting with BlueMaemo app is "Damn." Jan 01 06:25:26 pupnik: still looking for a trick to figure out which installed packages take up the most rootfs space Jan 01 06:25:32 vs say /opt Jan 01 06:26:28 ls -1s /usr/bin |sort -n ? Jan 01 06:27:36 a few put significant libraries in /usr/lib Jan 01 06:30:42 hrm, does BlueMaemo work for you and Ubuntu? Jan 01 06:30:58 I mean using BlueMaemo on an N900 to act as mouse for Ubuntu target Jan 01 06:31:11 hey that's cool Jan 01 06:31:18 will it do keyboard also? Jan 01 06:31:30 yeah Jan 01 06:31:35 hello HTPC! :D Jan 01 06:32:04 I can't get it to hold a connection to my Ubuntu machine though when I choose a mode (like keyboard) Jan 01 06:32:48 if it's really a problem, we could probably get synergy+wlan working using device to steer Jan 01 06:33:24 but maybe bluemaemo allows for more automation Jan 01 06:37:11 nevemind, I got if to work Jan 01 06:37:36 if there's something ppl need to know please add comments Jan 01 06:37:56 the accuracy is not teeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Jan 01 06:38:13 ah sorry about that Jan 01 06:38:38 I'm not really sure what to say - it worked for about 1 minute Jan 01 06:39:04 I had to wait-for-connection from within Blue Maemo and then connect to it from the Ubuntu Bluetooth connection preferences dialog Jan 01 06:39:15 going the other way around wouldn't work at all Jan 01 06:40:34 setting up bluetooth on my linux PC was 'fun' like configuring a soundblaster in 1995 Jan 01 06:41:29 it is simple in Ubuntu Jan 01 06:42:25 that's what ubuntu does best Jan 01 06:42:41 * cehteh rather wants the other way around, use the laptops keyboard and mouse for the n900 Jan 01 06:43:01 have to play with x2x for that, but hildon is really bad with mouse Jan 01 06:43:28 on 770 and N810 i used synergy all the time to control device with keybd/mouse Jan 01 06:43:35 can connect my bluetooth mouse, but without a cursor its no much fun :P .. scroll wheel works at last Jan 01 06:43:36 runs on n900 too Jan 01 06:43:59 x2x is way more nice when you only want to connect x servers Jan 01 06:44:12 thanks i'll look into it Jan 01 06:44:22 less resources, less latency, easier to configure Jan 01 06:44:55 x2x -wait -north -to starbase.pipapo.org:0 Jan 01 06:45:08 rather no config at all just a few commandline opts :) Jan 01 06:45:49 gimme Jan 01 06:46:03 but the n900 xserver doesnt listen on tcp and i rather dont want to change that :) so ssh tunnel ftw Jan 01 06:47:22 where did you get x2x binary? Jan 01 06:47:56 you only need that on one side (where you use the keybaord and mouse) Jan 01 06:48:05 its packaged for most distis Jan 01 06:48:48 that sounds awesome Jan 01 06:48:48 other server needs the xtest extension, i didnt looked in that is enabled on the n900 .. but enabling it is quite common Jan 01 06:49:21 today I mailed my rebate application for the US N900 Ovi Store sign up Jan 01 06:49:28 uses some x protocoll magic rather than client/server like synergy Jan 01 06:49:30 despite there being no Ovi Store to sign up for Jan 01 06:49:44 I hope to hell it gets honored anyways Jan 01 06:50:02 what app is that? Jan 01 06:52:34 cehteh: hm? Jan 01 06:52:47 my case is finished, 1st try looks bit prototypish :) Jan 01 06:54:50 'battery low' sounds like a sad R2D2 :) Jan 01 06:54:59 ha yeah it does Jan 01 06:54:59 case for what cehteh Jan 01 06:55:22 n900 Jan 01 06:55:38 (what else) Jan 01 06:55:52 oh um, sewing? hard case? Jan 01 06:56:53 both :) vacuum molded shells and then neoprene laminated/sewed Jan 01 06:59:09 oops, i got two instances of cpu-load applet running Jan 01 07:00:52 * cehteh will make some photos and put them on the server Jan 01 07:01:48 well i already have few Jan 01 07:02:39 i've seen a book on homemade vacuum-moulding. seems like a lot of work. how did you manage it? Jan 01 07:03:23 yeah with a lot of work :) .. well i once learned that as job Jan 01 07:03:34 while this is really homemade stuff now :) Jan 01 07:03:45 very. cool. Jan 01 07:04:44 this is a protective case or something with added function? Jan 01 07:05:00 konttori's game-controller shell project could use your skills Jan 01 07:05:29 i was going to dremel something out of wood Jan 01 07:05:52 http://lumiera.org/n900_case1.jpg Jan 01 07:06:08 well except no keyboard its useable while protecting it Jan 01 07:07:03 cool surface! Jan 01 07:07:33 btw i tried the index.theme trick from n800 to show x pointer and it doesn't seem to work Jan 01 07:07:53 even copied x-xcursor.xml over Jan 01 07:08:06 i made the photo with the n900 itself so no photo while its in the case yet :) Jan 01 07:09:44 it would reduce protection but you could cut 4mm off the top edge to allow sliding screen up Jan 01 07:11:40 http://lumiera.org/n900_case2.jpg Jan 01 07:11:45 other side Jan 01 07:12:41 nah the bottom is really a tight fitting shell there is no easy room for sliding and even if you could slide it out, it will become bit instable Jan 01 07:13:05 the sides are open, for speakers and jacks Jan 01 07:14:23 hehe and i cursed earlier because its so tight that i had to try to get the device out for 10 minutes... until i found the right way out :) Jan 01 07:15:53 http://www.flickr.com/photos/32856926@N06/4027160411/sizes/l/in/set-72157622622073500/ cool summit pics Jan 01 07:20:56 so made some pics with device inside .. moment Jan 01 07:26:14 http://lumiera.org/n900_case3.jpg Jan 01 07:29:01 http://lumiera.org/n900_case4.jpg .. and finally Jan 01 07:29:24 better pix next time .. maybe i make a better one, this one was just a first tr Jan 01 07:29:25 y Jan 01 07:45:30 its too bad n900 is single touch Jan 01 07:45:44 makes the touch screen game controller a bit worthless Jan 01 07:59:34 cehteh: thanks for sharing pictures, that is a very slick prototype Jan 01 08:00:00 I am not overly impressed by the Nokia CP-321 case for the N900 Jan 01 08:00:08 better than nothing, but not by a lot Jan 01 08:00:31 lol Jan 01 08:00:34 haven't even looked into a case Jan 01 08:00:41 it would have been at least critically important to allow the device to charge while in the case IMO Jan 01 08:00:44 having connection problems tonight Jan 01 08:01:08 ah Jan 01 08:01:22 well I see no reason that the only access the CP-321 allows is to get the stylus Jan 01 08:01:23 yeah, i made it by myself because no one fits my requirements: good impact potection & useable at the same time Jan 01 08:01:48 a simple neoprene bag gives no much protection Jan 01 08:01:53 yeah "chuck it in a backpack" test Jan 01 08:02:03 lather case neither Jan 01 08:02:18 and with most ones you have to pull it out to handle it Jan 01 08:02:37 well now i can play n900fly :) Jan 01 08:02:45 * lucent grins Jan 01 08:02:54 I wish there was a ski app Jan 01 08:03:07 I want a graph of my snowboarding runs Jan 01 08:03:18 there is one Jan 01 08:03:22 it is called Braek Jan 01 08:03:28 har Jan 01 08:03:36 N900 sits in a pouch in my backpack Jan 01 08:04:02 I've superman'ed and endo'ed without ill effect Jan 01 08:06:16 * cehteh thinks about making another biggier case where i can put the neoprene shell in .. watertight for biking Jan 01 08:06:46 made from plexiglas or so, the device will become inaccessible then but really well sealed Jan 01 08:06:52 maybe i'll grease this one up and set it in a dish of silicone caulk Jan 01 08:07:18 hehe Jan 01 08:07:21 always wanted to try that. perhaps not with a n900 though. Jan 01 08:08:43 silicone is prone to cutting good against impacts, but sharp edges are to be prevented Jan 01 08:09:13 i was thinking about polyurethane resin .. Jan 01 08:09:25 I think about polyurethane resin a lot. Jan 01 08:16:49 cehteh: "otter box" is a very well recommended case for the Apple devices Jan 01 08:17:03 I think without a slider the iPhone can be better protected Jan 01 08:17:10 a friend of me has a otter box for his n810 Jan 01 08:17:12 * RST38h looks at centeh and jX with concern Jan 01 08:17:27 looks a bit like a sandwitch box :P Jan 01 08:17:35 * jX casts RST38h a polyurethane resin and makes a mold for duplicates. Jan 01 08:17:38 otter box for the n810? does it retain slider and keyboard access? Jan 01 08:17:48 urgh Jan 01 08:18:04 http://www.christeck.de/wp/2009/02/28/nokia-n810-in-a-home-grown-bike-mount/ Jan 01 08:21:08 the durability of n900 is stunning to me. and i don't want to describe in detail why. Jan 01 08:21:42 cehteh: that dude does a lot of cool stuff Jan 01 08:21:54 yep Jan 01 08:22:17 oh you know him? Jan 01 08:22:29 lol i just discovered his site a few hours ago and sent him a nice-gram Jan 01 08:22:40 yes a friend if me :) Jan 01 08:23:06 he does a lot for osm Jan 01 08:23:55 so, on the n900, can I send a file (specifically a pic) via bluetooth to another device like my PC? I'm not seeing anything jump out at me. Jan 01 08:23:59 i just started my first osm edit - 95 km^2. I am missing street names though. Jan 01 08:24:27 Is that because i chose a large area (woods) or because osm2go doesn't do street labels? Jan 01 08:24:30 i dont do osm .. well here in karlsruhe is not much left to map anyways :P Jan 01 08:24:36 ah k Jan 01 08:24:44 we have a strong community here :) Jan 01 08:24:49 * RST38h suddenly gets a perfect idea for a screen widget Jan 01 08:25:05 A little square button that directly starts the "More.." app menu Jan 01 08:25:11 * FIQ lost Jan 01 08:25:27 my town of 25k seems to have 12 osm contributors. they mapped a ton of stuff. Jan 01 08:26:16 nice RST38h. I moved my favorites to first menu though, which now has about 20 entries Jan 01 08:26:28 mhm is maemo mapper so much broken on n900 still? Jan 01 08:27:15 It shows me where i am driving... Jan 01 08:28:08 pupnik: have you used that config files hack? Jan 01 08:28:16 i try to configure repositories and cachingg / downloading maps in advance Jan 01 08:28:38 yea, downloading does not work very well in the current maemo mapper build Jan 01 08:30:07 maybe anyone could try to port viking to maemo Jan 01 08:30:14 vikin.sf.net Jan 01 08:30:19 viking.sf.net Jan 01 08:34:09 i would also appreciate less "ET Phooone Hoome" from N900 map application Jan 01 08:35:34 yeah i dont like it, mamemo mapper is the way to go Jan 01 08:35:43 just some way ahead Jan 01 08:37:06 viking looks ok! but i'd prefer an osm2go client that defaults to act like a map viewer/follower Jan 01 08:37:11 * cehteh considers for another app which changes online precence state and profile depending on some rules Jan 01 08:37:38 osm2go looks bit resource intensive .. managing raw osm data Jan 01 08:38:33 i was hoping for something that acted like a lightweight gps map, then let me switch to osm2go edit mode Jan 01 08:38:50 btw the default/demo map of osm2go is karlsruhe, the city where i live :P Jan 01 08:38:51 maep Jan 01 08:38:52 do you think this would be a good addon to the osm2go client? Jan 01 08:39:18 maep will work offline? Jan 01 08:39:58 didnt tried maep yet Jan 01 08:40:03 jX: the way I do this is (from Ubuntu) select the connected N900 device via bluetooth settings applet on Ubuntu, and Browse Files of N900 device Jan 01 08:40:21 i dont want a too simple app, but it doesnt need to rendermaps on the device, i need my battery Jan 01 08:40:37 jX: it's not exactly a send-to but more like a get-from, does this make sense? Jan 01 08:40:48 yeah Jan 01 08:40:55 little irritating. Jan 01 08:41:04 but slightly easier than finding theusb cable Jan 01 08:44:55 hehehe Jan 01 08:44:58 jX: I had no alternative on the other phone I've owned, so I'm very much used to this Jan 01 08:45:06 jX: the photos are in Data/DCIM/... Jan 01 08:45:08 my former phone was a Nokia 6650, with symbian. Jan 01 08:45:12 edge is actually useable on this thing Jan 01 08:45:14 yeah, I found them Jan 01 08:45:16 im in lust Jan 01 08:45:23 time to jackerbate Jan 01 08:45:26 KamuiN900: ha Jan 01 08:45:32 I am stuck with EDGE Jan 01 08:45:34 on my 6650 I could find a file, select the menu, and pick "Sent Via" Jan 01 08:45:38 no 3G anywhere around here Jan 01 08:45:41 me to, AT&T fail Jan 01 08:45:52 Tmobile here, just no 3G service Jan 01 08:46:39 I got you all beat, I have no edge even where im at for the holidays :P Jan 01 08:47:01 no signal whatsoever, might as well pull out my sim card Jan 01 08:47:12 black rock city, nv? Jan 01 08:47:14 3.5g on tmobile back at home though :) Jan 01 08:47:20 no wait, even they have a cell tower now Jan 01 08:47:24 nah, the outskirts of nowhere, north carolina Jan 01 08:47:29 ah okay Jan 01 08:47:51 tmobile has a convoluted web interface for billing and payments Jan 01 08:48:05 I liked how slick and clean AT&T's billing interface was Jan 01 08:48:20 never been on at&t Jan 01 08:48:30 too bad AT&T wanted $50/month for basic service no text no internet Jan 01 08:48:38 My mom just got an n900. Jan 01 08:49:00 paying $45.06/month now for tmobile 500 minutes, no text, unlimited internet Jan 01 08:49:15 dmj7261: wow, your mom is pretty clued in? Jan 01 08:49:35 She liked what she saw from mine. Jan 01 08:49:52 cool, im paying 60 a month for 500 min, unlimited text/internet no contract Jan 01 08:49:58 yeah, she liked what she ssaw of mine, too. Jan 01 08:50:11 just about anyone in my family would end up throwing the n900 out a window Jan 01 08:50:25 there are some people who just shouldn't use computers Jan 01 08:50:32 i.e. people who don't want to think at all, about anything Jan 01 08:50:42 We managed to save $15 a month going from verizon to tmobile while adding unlimited text for everybody and 2 data plans. Jan 01 08:51:08 tmobile is definitely the value if they have service where you are Jan 01 08:51:15 My mom needs some help from me setting it up, but seems happy with it so far. Jan 01 08:51:33 dmj7261: oh, two N900's in the family? Jan 01 08:51:59 It seems to be anywhere between half bars on 2g and full 3.5 depending on if I'm in a large metal framed building. Jan 01 08:52:01 Yep. Jan 01 08:52:16 That's new as of this morning. Jan 01 08:52:23 dmj7261: you tried sticking it in 3g only mode? Jan 01 08:52:38 no I haven't. I didn't knwo you could. Jan 01 08:52:50 my house has good 3.5 g coverage, but relatively crappy 2g oddly enough, and in dual mode the n900 will still sometimes switch back and forth Jan 01 08:53:01 hmm Jan 01 08:53:05 I get better battery life going 3g only (at home) Jan 01 08:53:15 I guess you'd need a 3g signal to do that htrick? Jan 01 08:53:22 yeah Jan 01 08:53:28 the similar concept applies though Jan 01 08:53:32 if you only have 2g coverage Jan 01 08:53:44 you save the power of periodically powering both radios to see whats available Jan 01 08:54:04 i.e. go into 2g only mode Jan 01 08:54:10 oh no way, what's the trick? documented anywhere? Jan 01 08:54:11 there was some discussion on the forum, switching 2G/3G frequently is the worst Jan 01 08:54:27 how do you do that? Jan 01 08:54:41 are you stuck with qwerty when using N900? Jan 01 08:54:49 settings -> telephone Jan 01 08:55:17 i also only enabled 2g, dont need more in most cases and conserves power the best Jan 01 08:55:34 some switcher from the status menu would be nice Jan 01 08:55:47 FIQ: instead of? Jan 01 08:55:53 oh here "Network mode > Dual" is not selectable Jan 01 08:55:53 well most of the time i have celluar turned off :) Jan 01 08:55:58 strangely, my mom was impressed with all the apps available Jan 01 08:56:01 insteaf of dvorak/svorak/etc Jan 01 08:56:07 there is an optional onscreen keyboard (also qwerty) if thats what you mean Jan 01 08:56:12 lucent: you have to stop the data connection to switch Jan 01 08:56:25 ah, im sure you can switch the keymaps, not sure how easy it would be though Jan 01 08:56:26 just in case you have it on Jan 01 08:56:51 ah Jan 01 08:56:53 And the web browser is hard to beat. Jan 01 08:56:57 well and with 2g you can either talk or internet but not both at the same time for many operators Jan 01 08:56:57 if a data connection is active you cant change the 2g/3g/dual mode option Jan 01 08:57:01 will check it when i got one then. Jan 01 08:57:17 cehteh: thanks! does the trick like a pimp Jan 01 08:57:28 yeah, that's the biggest drawback of 2g IMO cehteh Jan 01 08:57:53 On CDMA you can't do both even on 3g Jan 01 08:57:56 if you're on att it's a moot point though cause your SOL for 3g Jan 01 08:58:24 dmj7261: wow seriously? I didn't realize that Jan 01 08:58:24 I find it's really useful to be able to stay on the line with somebody while checking something on the internet Jan 01 08:58:34 heh I used that as a 'feature' on my treo650 Jan 01 08:58:36 I tested that on the DROID. Jan 01 08:58:51 didn't want to take calls, load up ssh and irssi on an active channel Jan 01 08:59:25 * cehteh should try if he can take calls when data is active pon 2g Jan 01 08:59:34 well i take a nap .. Jan 01 08:59:37 DROID failed that test miserably, n900 usually passes. Jan 01 08:59:43 folks, any ways to disable the "tap close -> power off device" when N900 is secured? Jan 01 08:59:57 dmj7261: it will work on the DROID with a wifi connection of course right? Jan 01 09:00:11 I would think so. Jan 01 09:00:13 I haven't done much simultaneous data/voice on 3g Jan 01 09:00:15 button to power off device prompt would be fine, I'm finding myself waste moments all the time on that prompt when I tap the screen and it's secured Jan 01 09:00:17 lucent: /etc/systemui/systemui.conf would be my bet Jan 01 09:00:23 great! thanks Jan 01 09:00:28 but I was talking to my mom on my phone will downloading my debian chroot over wifi Jan 01 09:00:30 not sure .. just a guess Jan 01 09:00:31 The only wifi at the verizon store was a Tmobile hotspot, so I couldn't check. Jan 01 09:00:32 while* Jan 01 09:00:53 someone Jan 01 09:01:03 PLEASE tell me that you can have more than one widget instance at a time Jan 01 09:01:06 I find that rather ironic Jan 01 09:01:06 I mean, come on Jan 01 09:01:16 shinkamui: you can Jan 01 09:01:18 I want to have a couple of pictures on page 4 Jan 01 09:01:21 it's a configuration option of the widget Jan 01 09:01:24 Hello, I am developing an application in Qt for maemo5, in which I want to render a PDF. What library can I use for this? Jan 01 09:01:28 but it wont let me add another one Jan 01 09:01:30 i.e. will depend on the choice of the widget developer Jan 01 09:01:35 libpoplar? Jan 01 09:01:35 i c Jan 01 09:01:39 I don't remember specifics, but I think it's in the .desktop file Jan 01 09:01:56 what is the hole in the N900 on the keyboard lower left corner Jan 01 09:02:01 mic? Jan 01 09:02:07 no Jan 01 09:02:09 lanyard attachment? Jan 01 09:02:09 lucent: mic is lower right Jan 01 09:02:12 yes Jan 01 09:02:23 loophole for strapping it to something Jan 01 09:02:25 lanyard attachment Jan 01 09:02:27 how does that work if it's just one hole Jan 01 09:02:41 you need to open the back to use it. Jan 01 09:02:50 dmj7261: libpoppler binding for Qt is not available for maemo :( Jan 01 09:02:51 ...to install the lanyard that is. Jan 01 09:02:54 oh Jan 01 09:02:56 oh gosh that was embarassingly obvious Jan 01 09:02:57 d'oh Jan 01 09:03:01 porting time? Jan 01 09:03:07 happy new year dudes. In an unrelated news How can i change the colour of the notification icon (or whatever its called) from yellow to say something cool like blue Jan 01 09:03:18 uhm yes cant be called when on 2g/data Jan 01 09:03:20 N900 Jan 01 09:03:28 but i get at least a notification Jan 01 09:03:31 hmm, how does the back still go back on then? Jan 01 09:03:42 I tried.... but I m finding it difficult... can i use some other lib? Jan 01 09:03:55 oh I see Jan 01 09:04:04 it has a little plastic clip for the loop Jan 01 09:04:19 * cehteh changed the notification light in a lot ways .. but dunno about the icon Jan 01 09:04:56 don't think a lanyard was included with my N900 Jan 01 09:05:06 was it included with anyone elses? Jan 01 09:05:06 neither here Jan 01 09:05:07 lucent: they aren't included in the box Jan 01 09:05:10 'k Jan 01 09:05:14 optional accessory thing Jan 01 09:05:22 they are sold for $20 by nokia :P Jan 01 09:05:50 holy fruitcake Jan 01 09:05:55 j/k Jan 01 09:08:05 .. cu Jan 01 09:09:27 k cu Jan 01 09:09:30 fook nokia Jan 01 09:09:32 I wanted my lanyard Jan 01 09:09:35 I needed it tonight Jan 01 09:09:36 viking has some maemo code it seems Jan 01 09:09:49 and what hapened to the adapter that was supposed to ship Jan 01 09:10:01 to ocnvert the old charger and interface to the new microusb Jan 01 09:10:11 there is one in my box Jan 01 09:10:18 GAY! Jan 01 09:10:18 but it was a summit proto Jan 01 09:10:20 I dind't get one Jan 01 09:10:54 moin Jan 01 09:10:59 servus Jan 01 09:11:42 Guess I'll make a lanyard out of 550 cord strands Jan 01 09:12:01 ...like everything else around here, duct tape and 550 cord holds it together Jan 01 09:12:14 hmm, a loop of wire would do it too Jan 01 09:12:57 http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&ct=res&cd=1&ved=0CAcQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Felago-Mobile-microSDHC-Memory-Reader%2Fdp%2FB002HGFKR8&rct=j&q=elago+micro+ii&ei=kLw9S4i9ONH3nAfT99iACQ&usg=AFQjCNH59V-hUw6_rKoSGegWGzekj5zKkw Jan 01 09:13:09 * lucent apologizes for the link fail Jan 01 09:13:25 should instead be http://www.amazon.com/elago-Mobile-microSDHC-Memory-Reader/dp/B002HGFKR8 Jan 01 09:14:54 Anyone knows what to do about this: https://garage.maemo.org/builder/fremantle/xchat_2.8.6-maemo13/armel.root.log.FAILED.txt ??? Jan 01 09:16:21 RST38h: beat up whoever uploaded debconf to repository Jan 01 09:16:34 Stskeeps: crap. Jan 01 09:23:08 nevermind I found the "R" Jan 01 09:27:18 headphones volume buttons don't activate the volume function, is that the same for others? Jan 01 09:33:52 for n900? the bundled headphones don't have volume buttons Jan 01 09:34:16 yeah they do Jan 01 09:34:35 they're Nokia WH-205's Jan 01 09:34:39 not for me Jan 01 09:35:18 I guess my question is for anyone who also has WH-205's, does the volume control work in the standard media player? Jan 01 09:35:58 wonder if I broke mine trying to figure out that they're flat rocker buttons, and I was here trying to pry off the button face to get to a secret compartment that isn't there Jan 01 09:37:27 google search for WH-205 also says that it has a single answer/hangup button Jan 01 09:37:33 there's no volume control Jan 01 09:37:56 my mistake then Jan 01 09:38:15 I thought those buttons would logically be volume control? oh well Jan 01 09:38:32 oh single button Jan 01 09:38:44 it really is not obvious Jan 01 09:39:15 damn Jan 01 09:39:19 thats really frustrating Jan 01 09:39:33 image viewer just shows a ton of random images that are on my device Jan 01 09:39:36 not just camera pics Jan 01 09:39:45 shinkamui: I noticed this too Jan 01 09:39:48 dudes, this has to be configurable some how Jan 01 09:40:14 ill check the bug reports Jan 01 09:40:16 it's not the most idiot friendly idea Jan 01 09:40:41 I would like it to be more idiot friendly, that is what I mean, for my own use because I'm not interested in thinking very much Jan 01 09:41:12 flicking through a lot of background wallpapers is not always fun Jan 01 09:41:16 i find it really annoying, as I have a huge archive of old pics I migrated, and those AND the freeking remotes from irreco AND all the images from jagged alliance 2 show up by default Jan 01 09:41:20 yea Jan 01 09:41:21 that too Jan 01 09:41:28 and I have a ton of wallpapers Jan 01 09:41:53 and they seem to be in date order, so shit I copied is more recent then some of the older pictures the camera took Jan 01 09:41:57 *sigh* Jan 01 09:42:12 this is definately typical nokia behavior though Jan 01 09:42:17 my N95 did the same crap Jan 01 09:43:23 guess I prefer rockbox to the N900's media player Jan 01 09:47:38 the requirements of bundled apps generally make them unsuitable for dinosaurs, hackers or domain-specialists, as a rule. Jan 01 09:50:21 shinkamui; worked fine for me to copy with the file manager in maemo, my n900 preserved the dates from the original files. If you copy remote files, then maybe scp could be the way to do it Jan 01 09:51:44 pupnik: who are they suitable for then? Jan 01 09:51:52 QA robots Jan 01 09:52:23 is there a sane way to add FLAC support to the N900 bundled media player? Jan 01 09:52:47 I saw mention "in the ether blogosphere internets" that it doesn't like FLAC media tags Jan 01 09:53:14 tried installing ogg-support ? Jan 01 09:53:18 that iirc adds it Jan 01 09:53:52 will try that now Jan 01 09:56:24 * RST38h moos Jan 01 09:57:02 ruskie: lucent: 1.0.5 doesn't support flac tags. There's 1.0.6rc1 in extras-devel that do support them, but I'm going to include some other fixes as well, before pushing 1.0.6 to extras Jan 01 09:57:37 thanks... I actually removed mediaplayer and am running xmms2 for audio ;) Jan 01 09:58:54 xmms2 doesn't use GStreamer and ogg-support is all about adding missing gst plugins Jan 01 09:59:06 well it also installs libogg doesn't it? Jan 01 09:59:08 thanks kulve Jan 01 09:59:17 and related bits and pieces ;) Jan 01 09:59:55 anyone tuning the xmms2 gui? Jan 01 10:00:10 yes, ogg-support drags e.g. libogg in, but I don't know how xmms2 implements its ogg/flac support Jan 01 10:00:26 through libogg/libflac and it's own plugins Jan 01 10:00:40 ok Jan 01 10:00:45 ifreq, someone would need to write up an xmms2 client for a friendly n900 GUI ;) Jan 01 10:00:53 ifreq, else it has no gui out of the box Jan 01 10:00:58 I wonder is the cellular call routed through gstreamer? Jan 01 10:00:59 yeah, quite complete rewrite :P Jan 01 10:01:05 no Jan 01 10:01:06 i.e. could I record a phone conversation? Jan 01 10:01:09 just command line utils Jan 01 10:01:36 ifreq, xmms2 is client-server so you basically have the server running and clients controling it Jan 01 10:01:45 hmm okay Jan 01 10:01:56 newer thought that way Jan 01 10:02:05 ruskie: what about mpd then? Jan 01 10:02:11 instead of xmms2 Jan 01 10:02:13 don't like it don't want it etc... Jan 01 10:02:25 aha Jan 01 10:02:36 lucent: not sure, but it goes through pulseaudio at least, you should be able to record them from pulse Jan 01 10:04:19 villager: the capability to record and playback portions of calls would be a chaotic pleasure when dealing with Tmobile support Jan 01 10:04:36 ifreq, I've got mod, wavpack, mpc, mpg123, ogg, flac, faad, and a pile of other formats supported with xmms2 as well ;) Jan 01 10:04:49 "Here mate, let me play back exactly what I was told by a Tmobile representative yesterday" Jan 01 10:04:59 * RST38h wonders who needs these where mp3 suffices Jan 01 10:05:22 I'd love to have call recording as well Jan 01 10:05:36 mp3? I can't listen to mp3 when there is an option to listen to uncompressed cd quality Jan 01 10:06:45 * ifreq is happy with mp3 + mp3 works on most of the hw-players Jan 01 10:06:48 even CD quality is not all that perfect for me, its advantages are obscured by the loudness war Jan 01 10:06:51 ok, add flaxc Jan 01 10:06:53 flac Jan 01 10:07:04 Morning, all Jan 01 10:07:08 lucent <-- an audiophile! Jan 01 10:07:10 i'm listening to oggs of recordings from 1920. I'll challenge you to hear a difference twixt ogg and cd. Jan 01 10:07:19 not really, I just like music a lot Jan 01 10:07:49 * RST38h sells lucent some speaker cables made of argentinian oxygene-free silver Jan 01 10:08:02 to sell it I'd have to buy it Jan 01 10:08:12 One can learn to hear differences, it's true. Jan 01 10:08:32 I'm on a budget, good audio takes a tight budget and some determination Jan 01 10:08:38 and that god-awful xing codec used in radio stations is a crime against music :/ Jan 01 10:08:50 yeah Jan 01 10:09:03 speakers come first Jan 01 10:09:13 speakers and room Jan 01 10:09:53 heh, wood panelled studio apartment here makes that rather difficult to do in a room situation Jan 01 10:10:34 sorry to have prodded this off-topic for the chan Jan 01 10:10:40 storage space is cheap and decoding flac takes less battery than decoding mp3 or ogg, so why not? :) Jan 01 10:11:31 kulve: you should take into account the battery used when you do more reading from flash Jan 01 10:11:40 yeah FLAC is a win and since I've gotten comfortable with the SanDisk Sansa Fuze player (which takes microSDHC cards), no need to complain about the lack of hardware player Jan 01 10:12:02 you mean, you have got a tablet AND an mp3 player? Jan 01 10:12:12 RST38h: I did Jan 01 10:12:19 several Fuze players actually, depending on my listening habits Jan 01 10:12:28 lesson learned Jan 01 10:12:34 they were less than $30 to buy each Jan 01 10:12:40 don't start 7 usb transfers simultaneously on the N900 from the PC Jan 01 10:12:52 time to completetion increases logarithmicly Jan 01 10:12:53 hmm Jan 01 10:13:01 really? Jan 01 10:13:08 heh, yeah, which platform - win mac or lin? Jan 01 10:13:15 win Jan 01 10:13:22 We have a winner! Jan 01 10:13:24 * RST38h hides Jan 01 10:13:24 win is particularly awful Jan 01 10:13:31 well, lessons learned Jan 01 10:13:36 Linux actualyl behaves worse for me Jan 01 10:13:38 whichever window you have focused gets more priority Jan 01 10:13:47 lol Jan 01 10:13:49 Slower USB transfer rates Jan 01 10:13:51 that would have been this one Jan 01 10:13:51 :) Jan 01 10:14:09 well dudes, Im off to bed, happy new year to all of you Jan 01 10:14:11 see you in the AM Jan 01 10:14:15 cheers shinkamui Jan 01 10:14:20 repent shinkamui Jan 01 10:14:23 lol Jan 01 10:14:24 oh, I meant cheers Jan 01 10:14:31 * shinkamui bows Jan 01 10:14:35 RST38h: http://tuomas.kulve.fi/blog/2009/11/07/n900-battery-duration-ogg-vs-mp3/ Jan 01 10:15:03 oggvorbis development is kind of dead though which is a turnoff Jan 01 10:15:18 what more do you expect from it? Jan 01 10:15:40 A *lot* more optimization and features like bitrate peeling Jan 01 10:15:53 that* is how to do testing... Jan 01 10:16:02 lucent: ffmpeg's vorbis decoder seems to get optimizations quite nicely Jan 01 10:16:17 kulve, wanna give that a try with mpg123 as well? Jan 01 10:16:31 fixes for the corner cases I run into - rather frequently - which result in bad sounding encoding Jan 01 10:16:37 ruskie: not really. It takes ages to run those :) Jan 01 10:16:58 to bad... would've been interesting singe mpg123 has some arm optimisations Jan 01 10:16:59 when oggvorbis encoding works, it sounds a lot less accurate than the original but it sounds more pleasing Jan 01 10:17:08 when it fails, it fails hard. Jan 01 10:17:19 ruskie: more arm optimisations than the nokia's own decoder for n900? Jan 01 10:17:27 no clue Jan 01 10:17:35 kulve: ! Jan 01 10:17:51 sorry for the "passion bucket" passing judgement on the encoder based on my opinions Jan 01 10:18:50 kulve: 93.6 hours on idle??? Jan 01 10:18:58 that's almost 4 days Jan 01 10:19:05 cymbals and floor kicks never sound right with mp3 even at high bit rates... well that is all I think about mp3 and oggvorbis Jan 01 10:19:07 lucent, considering both ogg and mp3 are lossy... maybe try mpc or wavpack or flac ;) Jan 01 10:19:34 Ok, Ogg is a pig, nothing new there Jan 01 10:19:38 yeah this is stuff you will never really notice on earbuds Jan 01 10:19:57 I generally consider ogg better at reproducing than mp3 Jan 01 10:20:04 on a PA system at a deejay gig, the difference is clear if you're paying attention Jan 01 10:20:07 yup Jan 01 10:20:20 although ffvorbis seems to starve it well Jan 01 10:20:22 mp3 applies a lowpass filter that i used to hear distinctly (lame allowed disabling). ogg didn't. Jan 01 10:20:30 it's not bad or good, I just think mp3 is awful sounding on real equipment Jan 01 10:21:11 with enough booze going around and a talent at the tables, the dancefloor knows not the difference Jan 01 10:21:14 =) Jan 01 10:21:17 :) Jan 01 10:21:21 a fun thing to try is raising the absolute-threshold-of-hearing in lame encoding to a very high level. The music rises out of pure blackness. Jan 01 10:21:55 Well, that is also predictable Jan 01 10:22:22 yeah that constantly annoyed me is how most mp3 music tends to be encoded, all the quiet passages and details are "deleted" from the music. I go back to the CD to listen and it's like a completely different work of art Jan 01 10:22:23 it is an effect one couldn't get before the perceptual encoding revolution Jan 01 10:22:28 MP3 is a lossy compression format, and it loses upper frequencies first, based on the assumption that humans do not hear them well enough anyway Jan 01 10:22:53 really depends on the human involved Jan 01 10:22:57 it's funny about that RST38h Jan 01 10:22:58 This of course affects the percussive instruments first, as their waveforms are noisy and this contain a lot of upper frequencies Jan 01 10:23:16 the teenagers who CAN hear those frequencies are the widest adopters of mp3 to listen to the music Jan 01 10:23:21 ruskie: well, older people hear even less of upper fqs than youngsters Jan 01 10:23:52 RST38h, well again depends on the human involved Jan 01 10:24:02 some low bitrate encoders just generated hf amplitude-shaped noise, iirc Jan 01 10:24:40 now those frequencies are not in the music anymore! Jan 01 10:24:58 But the point is that even if you do not hear those frequencies, you still feel that something is different Jan 01 10:25:28 hm, that is less than scientific, I would agree though Jan 01 10:26:00 one album I enjoy listening to gives me a headache if I fall asleep when it's playing, and the format was encoded mp3 Jan 01 10:26:13 FLAC (lossless) always left me in a deep sleep Jan 01 10:26:36 lucent: Once you get scientific about human ears, the picture becomes waaaay more complicated Jan 01 10:27:08 Hint: the exact shape of your ear, incuding ridges, matters Jan 01 10:27:21 yeah I'm gonna stab in the dark and say that, how do you know if something is above or below you by listening to it? Jan 01 10:27:53 it's not some immediately middle-of-the-nyquist frequency only Jan 01 10:28:37 and if you throw out stuff that isn't exactly melodic, then sure I get the idea of what a song is about still Jan 01 10:28:50 won't be the same experience for me though Jan 01 10:29:42 the best though for me is to get back that full experience without spending a thousand dollars on crazy equipment Jan 01 10:30:21 HRTF Jan 01 10:30:22 I won't go on about it being better or worse if it's $35 and a uSD card :) Jan 01 10:30:47 that's about what I got my Sansa Fuze player for Jan 01 10:31:06 original firmware plays FLAC with an update from the manufacturer Jan 01 10:31:18 alternately it has a working port of Rockbox firmware Jan 01 10:31:42 It's kind of cool how #maemo folks are savvy on tech in general. Jan 01 10:33:04 * lucent :) Jan 01 10:33:22 my rockbox-compatible iriver died some time ago. I once wondered if the SDL-port of Rockbox would be usable in N900.. Jan 01 10:33:27 I'm only knowing what I have spent money and time on, to be fair Jan 01 10:34:06 flux: hmm, wonder if it's worth the time and effort tradeoff to get working though Jan 01 10:34:15 battery life would suffer greatly Jan 01 10:34:38 flux: I strongly suggest getting a Sansa Fuze to run rockbox on if you are an N900 owner Jan 01 10:34:47 the microSD interchangability is pretty keen Jan 01 10:35:09 lucent, I'm pretty sure it _works_, because there are other SDL-based programs for N900 and rockbox has SDL-support (for development purposes), but I'm wondering its usability Jan 01 10:35:52 can only guess, and at that not informed, no further comment sorry Jan 01 10:35:57 lucent, I'd rather not have an another device in my pockets, but had you given me that hint a year ago I would've definitely gone that way :) Jan 01 10:36:22 ha! well the Fuze is great battery life and takes microSD cards, I mean it's a must have in my inventory of gadgets Jan 01 10:36:31 I use it in place of a CD player, not as a media player Jan 01 10:36:34 (I also got a sony bt headset for my headphones, so as long as I have n900 somewhere near, it works decently) Jan 01 10:36:37 it does not play video worth a damn Jan 01 10:37:10 you read much head-fi forums lucent ? Jan 01 10:37:26 hm, not in tune with the hi-fi stuff sorry Jan 01 10:37:44 my background with audio is hobby home studio stuff Jan 01 10:37:52 they get deep into players, dacs and headphones Jan 01 10:38:53 sansa fuze $120+ here.. tch. Jan 01 10:39:13 yuck, I got mine from a liquidation website Jan 01 10:39:23 well I bought 3 of the 2gb models Jan 01 10:39:39 internal storage isn't the point so I go with the cheapest refurb I could find Jan 01 10:39:51 some woot.com retinkers :) Jan 01 10:42:16 in so far as improving the N900 goes, I'd be looking to get turntable (Serato Scratch) type control for audio playback and a lot of laptop only features Jan 01 10:42:20 not done here Jan 01 10:43:41 lack of multi-point touch screen is also a killer for the great niche "synthesizer" breath controller app I've seen on Apple products Jan 01 10:43:52 use the microphone as a pressure sensor Jan 01 10:44:06 multi touch capacitive screen allowing for finger positions like on a winded instrument Jan 01 10:44:20 instant expressive synth controller. Jan 01 10:57:53 In principle you can swap out the screen digitiser panel. Jan 01 10:58:04 Of course in practice that's very unlikely to happen. Jan 01 10:58:20 X-Fade: ping Jan 01 11:02:58 Welcome to 2010, where the fuck is Buck Rogers? Largely carried by one person. Jan 01 11:33:46 wow Jan 01 11:34:43 I fixed the gcc 4 compile time errors but no chance at learning the codebase. Jan 01 11:35:04 let's try it on armel, shall we? Jan 01 11:35:46 :F Jan 01 11:37:22 wow Jan 01 11:38:11 anybody tried n900 crash tests? Jan 01 11:43:11 LuciusMare: it is astonishingly durable. Jan 01 11:44:50 a very good 2010 to you all! Jan 01 12:13:40 is any of the browsers more multithreaded than microb? it's bloody annoying when the browser gets stuck when opening a bunch of new windows.. Jan 01 12:14:02 multithreadidness has nothing to do with getting stuck Jan 01 12:14:14 flux: I installed a nice fast browser from extras-devel yesterday. Jan 01 12:14:15 well, it does if you have a loop that needs to do a low of work Jan 01 12:14:25 flux: renders hundreds of times faster than microb Jan 01 12:14:34 of course, you can explicitly reduce the length of those loops, if you know which they are Jan 01 12:14:40 if anyone wants to try fennec go to mozilla.com/m Jan 01 12:14:45 or alternatively reduce overall performance by putting such hack everywhere Jan 01 12:14:53 speedevil, that's extremely nice Jan 01 12:14:57 lynx :) Jan 01 12:14:59 Bluewind: it is available from the repo. Jan 01 12:15:02 speedevil, gaah Jan 01 12:15:11 And yes, it's silly, but I find it occasionally handy. Jan 01 12:15:15 Bluewind: I installed it a while ago and continue updating it from the repo. It is still shit. Jan 01 12:15:16 besides, elinks renders nicer! Jan 01 12:15:17 oh k Jan 01 12:16:01 good day Jan 01 12:16:09 strange I haven't seen it some days ago Jan 01 12:16:27 EHLO TomaszD Jan 01 12:16:38 Bluewind: Only because you do not have the right repo added Jan 01 12:16:46 hello,i have problems with ssh - i made a key by sshkeygen on box1,copied the .pub to authorized_keys on n900, but when i try to connect to n900,it said Permission denied (publickey) Jan 01 12:17:16 LuciusMare: you try to connect to user or root? Jan 01 12:17:19 Bluewind: And too lazy to google / read Maemo News feeds Jan 01 12:17:19 user Jan 01 12:17:29 LuciusMare: passwd user before Jan 01 12:17:34 of course, copied to home user/.ssh Jan 01 12:17:43 Bluewind: i cant,it doesnt let me Jan 01 12:17:44 the acc is locked without a password Jan 01 12:18:05 >_> Jan 01 12:18:12 go in as root and run passd user Jan 01 12:18:41 hm Jan 01 12:20:49 LuciusMare: Bluewind is right; as user has no passwd, SSH refuses to let you connect with jut a key. Jan 01 12:21:06 LuciusMare: So, as root, you need to `passwd user' and set any random password you like. Jan 01 12:22:39 * LuciusMare facepalms Jan 01 12:22:49 that is kinda stupid Jan 01 12:23:26 you can search for the reason but I think they know what they are doing Jan 01 12:24:09 I also didn't understand why they wouldn't let you chroot any user into his home but into /home Jan 01 12:24:19 turned out you could exploit that Jan 01 12:24:27 woo Jan 01 12:24:35 it worx Jan 01 12:37:35 Hmh Jan 01 12:37:55 Now I manage to give the xwindow id to gst, but doesn't seem to affect anything :/ Jan 01 12:45:27 Google Reader is really weird about its recommendations... Jan 01 15:03:42 interesting Jan 01 15:03:56 still, it's a package that doesn't belong in extras :P Jan 01 15:03:57 Building debian based live CDs is not hard. Jan 01 15:04:10 We should try one for Mer Jan 01 15:04:41 well, we have a x86 bootable image though Jan 01 15:05:03 ah, okay Jan 01 15:05:09 So a bit redundant. Jan 01 15:06:09 sortof Jan 01 15:06:15 a live cd runs in ram only Jan 01 15:07:03 So what are the implications of that? Jan 01 15:07:11 That it will run slowly on the device? Jan 01 15:07:25 I thought people would want to try it out on their computers Jan 01 15:07:50 It will run slowish there too. Jan 01 15:30:35 Though that may be a plus for some. Jan 01 15:32:08 SpeedEvil: well, I got pretty good deal here in europe Jan 01 15:32:43 SpeedEvil: My current montly phone bill is something like 19euros and after the deal. However it is the same I have atm Jan 01 15:36:34 so awsome deal imho Jan 01 15:38:00 My current 'deal' is pay up front ~300 euro for discounted n900, then 30 euro for internet and calls for the next 6 mo Jan 01 15:39:40 hm Jan 01 15:40:10 killing all instances of browser,or browserd apparently reseted my phone Jan 01 15:40:33 it's got a watchdog Jan 01 15:40:40 woof Jan 01 15:42:00 and browser keeps crashing :( Jan 01 15:42:09 even after the restart Jan 01 15:42:36 LuciusMare_n900: and what are you doing if it keeps crashing? Jan 01 15:58:26 ah new xchat Jan 01 15:58:27 goodie Jan 01 15:58:34 jebba: No. Does it matter? Jan 01 15:58:38 lcuk: doesnt output anything, just blocks the input Jan 01 15:58:39 is it a new package or separate? Jan 01 15:58:40 * lcuk charms Jan 01 15:58:43 * RST38h needs to know a few things Jan 01 15:58:44 oh Jan 01 15:58:54 1) Do you want to keep or remove the channel title? Jan 01 15:59:00 lcuk: hangs for a while, then quits Jan 01 15:59:02 Keep! Jan 01 15:59:12 RST38h: does it matter? yes. Saves space on NAND. Jan 01 15:59:18 in fact, i just deleted it last night to save space. Jan 01 15:59:21 2) Do you want folks to join #maemo at freenode by default? Or maybe #n900bies as the default channel? Jan 01 15:59:35 LuciusMare, you sound like you have borkened your browser Jan 01 15:59:35 RST38h: i want optification ;) it's easy enough to add. Jan 01 15:59:35 1) yes 2) dont care Jan 01 15:59:39 jebba: Well, it is a pretty small package, so I would not be obsessing with it Jan 01 15:59:39 does maps start Jan 01 15:59:40 joining people to channel default is evil Jan 01 15:59:45 jebba: Good stuff on maemo-devel you sent, thanks Jan 01 15:59:48 (am i correct in remembering it usses the same engine) Jan 01 15:59:52 lcuk: ow Jan 01 15:59:59 yeh or either autojoin to any server Jan 01 15:59:59 lcuk: reflash? Jan 01 16:00:11 frals: the alternative is making them work through XChat's servers list Jan 01 16:00:12 jeremiah: np. G also suggested using "puppet" to manage configs mixed with "git" to track changes. Jan 01 16:00:25 LuciusMare, if you like, its probably gonna be easier, but if you have knowledge to try diagnose Jan 01 16:00:32 it might help people in future Jan 01 16:00:41 RST38h: ya, but all those small packages add up. What is size of /usr/bin/xchat* ? Total install size on NAND? Jan 01 16:00:41 jebba Depends. For FBReader I am somewhat afraid to optify, given how it works Jan 01 16:00:42 RST38h: yeah or type /server plaplaaa** Jan 01 16:01:13 jebba: don't obsess yourself too much Jan 01 16:01:17 * lcuk will be optifying the entire liqbase folder in one go *gulp* Jan 01 16:01:19 just put auto in debian/optify and let testers handle that Jan 01 16:01:23 jebba: Well, that is another great idea. But the institutional inertia is tough to overcome. Jan 01 16:01:32 I'll suggest it though. Jan 01 16:01:33 RST38h: what do you mean don't obsess yourself to much? that makes no sense. I hit 100% all the time. Jan 01 16:01:33 jebba: You really want to clean up your /? Figure out the way to cull localizations cache Jan 01 16:01:51 okay, does someone run ankimaemi on an nxxx device here? Jan 01 16:01:54 hey everyone, greetings from Aus Jan 01 16:01:58 RST38h: that would entail rebuilding packages that I dont have the source to. Jan 01 16:02:02 jebba: Probably means that you 1) have some stuff there taht you are not using or 2) there is a couple of huge packages there Jan 01 16:02:12 jebba: No. Jan 01 16:02:16 RST38h: I'm not using them!??! Jan 01 16:02:25 oh rst Jan 01 16:02:32 RST38h: though if it's > 500 KiB it will just never enter extras due to negative/blocker votes from people not here. Jan 01 16:02:33 * RST38h has tons of crap installed and is still at 80% Jan 01 16:02:37 people put what they like on Jan 01 16:02:40 even 75% really Jan 01 16:02:54 hello Jan 01 16:02:54 javispedro: depends Jan 01 16:02:56 can someone tell me if the source for the control panel is available? or where to look to find this out Jan 01 16:02:57 even i know that Jan 01 16:03:06 javispedro: it is 240kB or so right now though Jan 01 16:03:16 wow. Jan 01 16:03:24 RST38h: for instance rtcom-call-ui Depends on a billion l10n files. I can't remove those files due to deps. I can't rebuild rtcom-call-ui because I don't have source. For example. Jan 01 16:03:32 javispedro Surprisingly, XCHat is not a very large package Jan 01 16:03:41 jebba: Yes, you can Jan 01 16:03:43 RST38h: it is soooooooo easy to optify. Like 2 lines. Jan 01 16:03:48 jebba: rm -f Jan 01 16:03:54 RST38h: ... Jan 01 16:04:11 the .tar.gz for xchat is 4.1mb Jan 01 16:04:24 RST38h: why not just optify your package though? it's such a well known problem with such an easy solution... Jan 01 16:04:25 i know thats not code Jan 01 16:04:43 jebba: if it's really less than 500 KiB then I see no need to optify, really. The guidelines say so. Jan 01 16:04:56 (or used to say so :P ) Jan 01 16:05:23 jebba: Because a lot of times, optify breaks package Jan 01 16:05:34 what happens if i optify a folder that some of its contents have already been optified Jan 01 16:06:05 isn't it simpler to just compile with with --prefix in /opt somewhere... Jan 01 16:06:12 why packages cant be installed by default into /opt/maemo/bin instead of symlinking? Jan 01 16:06:13 RST38h: in the case of something simple like xchat it's not going to break. Easy enough to test too. Jan 01 16:06:19 +adding it to PATH Jan 01 16:06:22 jebba: So, if you are having problems with / space, I would start with du -r / |sort -rn |more Jan 01 16:06:28 ifreq: because they break even harder. Jan 01 19:29:16 some of us here are already perfectly happy with it (me) :) Jan 01 19:29:19 there are hardware considerations, the USB host mode is not possible to implement, battery life will not improve much more than it is right now Jan 01 19:29:28 xterm + ssh is the best I've ever used on any mobile device Jan 01 19:29:40 hrm, I thought USB host mode was a possibility... Jan 01 19:29:44 no possibility for multi-touch input (not that I know about) Jan 01 19:29:45 swear I saw something in one of the repos Jan 01 19:29:58 SplasPood: it was certainly for N810 Jan 01 19:30:03 Sir_Lancelot, return it, don't burden us with you indecision. Jan 01 19:30:08 lucent: :( oh Jan 01 19:30:22 lucent, not possible is too strong. Jan 01 19:30:30 it is not possible. Jan 01 19:30:44 lucent, it may be difficult, but absolute terms aren't useful at this point. :) Jan 01 19:30:57 GAN900, please die. Don't burden us with your existance Jan 01 19:31:08 lucent, where do you get your info? Jan 01 19:31:27 Sir_Lancelot, go to fortune teller for such kind of info Jan 01 19:31:34 pins are not wired, so if you wanted host usb that would be warranty voiding stuff Jan 01 19:31:35 Sir_Lancelot, if you're not happy with it, clearly it's not the device for you. Jan 01 19:31:35 what kind of answer is that? I was just asking for opinions. Isn't that the reason of existance of this chanel? So that people can talk?? Jan 01 19:31:39 Thus, return it. Jan 01 19:31:43 Seems easy to me. Jan 01 19:31:47 ok thanks Jan 01 19:31:52 bye Jan 01 19:32:06 GAN900: I think youre being a bit lame Jan 01 19:32:08 Sir_Lancelot, if, on the other hand, you're digging around trying to get us to justify you keeping it. . . . Jan 01 19:32:13 Sir_Lancelot: Return it, to me :D Jan 01 19:32:15 But oh well, too late now. Jan 01 19:32:31 SplasPood, meh, after enough years listening to lines like that it wears thin. Jan 01 19:32:35 I'll swap it for an iPhone 3G, har Jan 01 19:32:56 I wanted a device to use a full web browser on that fits in my pocket, and has a cellular modem Jan 01 19:32:59 SplasPood, what should I do? Convince him there's hope and he should keep it? Jan 01 19:33:04 GAN900: He has valid points... Obviously the future may bring solutions to his concerns/problems, but it also may not. Jan 01 19:33:10 N900 is worth the $500 investment to me Jan 01 19:33:14 GAN900: thats what he was lookin for ya Jan 01 19:33:19 I wanted the best smartphone on the market, so the N900 is worth the £350 investment to me Jan 01 19:33:22 I'm a bit more of a dedicated tinkerer Jan 01 19:33:25 but I have similar concerns Jan 01 19:33:32 £350? you import it? Jan 01 19:33:41 * Caesium couldn't be bothered and got it from expansys at full whack Jan 01 19:33:45 the device shows lots of promise, but will that promise come to fruition? I wonder that myself. Jan 01 19:33:45 SplasPood, the result is more likely to be that his expectations get built up, they don't get met and he's pissed when the return deadline passes. Jan 01 19:33:54 Gadgetoid_mbp: "the best" ? I consider the Neo Freerunner to be the best because of its open design through and through Jan 01 19:33:54 SplasPood, so, no, totally not worth it. Jan 01 19:33:58 he can always buy another one later. Jan 01 19:34:03 GAN900: Thats his problem when he makes his personal decision Jan 01 19:34:06 Caesium: Nokia UK store with their stupid broken discount voucher system Jan 01 19:34:09 SplasPood, either you believe in the platform or you don't. Jan 01 19:34:15 N900 is a compromise for me Jan 01 19:34:16 Gadgetoid_mbp: bleh, missed that one :) Jan 01 19:34:28 LULUCENluclucen what are you basing that on. The couple of hours of reading datasheets I've done today says theere are no seperate USB host pins. Jan 01 19:35:09 And combining that with the limited reading f the driver finding no appropriate support for switching into host mode seems to lead to it not being implemented in software as one possible conclusion. Jan 01 19:35:31 lucent, warranty voiding does not equal "not possible". :) Jan 01 19:35:36 lucent: Pffft, what would you know! you're only a modem :D Jan 01 19:35:40 liuluce: freerunner has _MAJOR_ hardware suckage in several ways. Jan 01 19:36:09 luce: for example - the graphics card is connected over a 7 megabyute/second bus, that is shared with the SD, and locks up the CPU when you access it. Jan 01 19:36:40 So youSo push 3 meg a second to the graphics card, and you've lost 40% of CPU Jan 01 19:36:47 SpeedEvil: Did they design it by putting all the chips into a washing machine full of epoxy resin? Jan 01 19:36:55 that's to my point though, an open design (in any state of development) is "best" to me Jan 01 19:37:11 lucent: agreed Jan 01 19:37:16 hi Jan 01 19:37:17 SpeedEvil, but it's free, as in rms free, so it's obviously superior to any other design :> Jan 01 19:37:35 gadge: unfortunately, mobile phone design is a bitch. Jan 01 19:37:42 lucent: Pandora-dora-dora we adore her-dora-dora if she's only come to market then we'd whore her Jan 01 19:37:44 I'm reformatting /dev/mmcblk0, should I keep it as fat or switch to ext2? Jan 01 19:38:08 Gadgetoid_mbp: that was -almost- shuttleworth-ian Jan 01 19:38:17 Gadgetoid_ many mobile phone parts are onblu avilable in silly quantitieds, and docs are almost unobtainable. Jan 01 19:38:44 I'm definitely in the "loving the n900" camp :) Jan 01 19:38:50 gadge: the GPU was picked on the baseis - as I can guess - of a 2 page spec-sheet. Which lied a lot. Jan 01 19:39:19 The N900 should have come ext2/3 formatted with a label on it saying "use a fsking fat formatted memory card n00b!" Jan 01 19:39:38 Gadgetoid: It turned out that performance with the GPU was at best a wash with the earlier revision with a clock half as fast. And adding the GPU cost a year of delays. Jan 01 19:40:08 I have an N810 Jan 01 19:40:14 SpeedEvil: These "open" projects seem awash with fail Jan 01 19:40:17 and I'm talking about the internal memory, btw Jan 01 19:40:27 Likewise Jan 01 19:40:30 I have a N770 sitting in the closet all lonely and feelin useless ;) Jan 01 19:40:33 Gadgetoid: It wasn't paradoxically the open part of openmoko which failed IMO. Jan 01 19:40:40 I used to use it with fbreader to read books Jan 01 19:40:52 Gadgetoid: it was the paid part, which failed utterly to communicate to the community what it was not doing. Jan 01 19:40:57 Gadgetoid_mbp: that didn't quite answer my question, though, any disadvantages to using ext2? Jan 01 19:40:59 The internal memory on all should just have been ext formatted, considering you can still access a fat memory card over USB Jan 01 19:41:10 SplasPood, "N770" isn't a thing. Jan 01 19:41:14 angasule: lack of USB access in Winblows, not sure about OSX/Linux though Jan 01 19:41:24 GAN900: eh? Jan 01 19:41:37 Gadgetoid_mbp: that's all? thanks, I don't use windows, I'll check with linux Jan 01 19:41:44 angasule, swap resides on fat. Jan 01 19:41:49 Not that I've tried it myself, despite dumping some of my root files onto the internal memory and symlinking them Jan 01 19:42:13 angasule, swap resides on fat. Jan 01 19:42:15 angasule, if you switch the whole thing to ext (use ext3) then you'll have to enable swap manually. Jan 01 19:42:17 GAN900: I'm pretty sure swap is not activated by default? :? Jan 01 19:42:35 has anyone tried all the browsers available for the n900 atm? I'm looking for something more lightweight and faster than microb / fennec. Jan 01 19:42:37 I don't want ext3, ext2 is fine Jan 01 19:42:40 angasule, meaning you can't turn it on in the GUI. Jan 01 19:42:40 angasule: yes it is Jan 01 19:42:48 angasule, you want ext3. Jan 01 19:42:50 bobbyd: lynx Jan 01 19:42:53 GAN900: why? Jan 01 19:43:03 GAN900: that's hardly a loss if he's competent enough to format it to ext in the first place... I would hope... Jan 01 19:43:10 SpeedEvil: hmm, ok, in the control thingie? I thought it was disabled, I'll check Jan 01 19:43:21 angasule, ext2 is likely to lead to more flash wear with the amount of wd resets diablo tends to get. Jan 01 19:43:36 Gadgetoid_mbp, just so he's aware. :) Jan 01 19:43:41 GAN900: isn't ext3 worse in that respect? Jan 01 19:43:45 SpeedEvil: hmm, does that one have a graphical view? I remember one of the text-based browsers does. Jan 01 19:43:48 GAN900: true, dat Jan 01 19:43:49 SplasPood, it's a 770. Jan 01 19:43:55 GAN900: What do you mean? Jan 01 19:43:58 bobbyd: no. It's fast though. Jan 01 19:44:03 ok Jan 01 19:44:08 GAN900: oh was it? Jan 01 19:44:10 angasule, not if it has to be fscked on every reset. Jan 01 19:44:22 GAN900: excuse me then :) Jan 01 19:44:25 SplasPood, 770 wasn't part of Nseries. Jan 01 19:44:36 yea, you're correct Jan 01 19:44:48 N800 was the first Maemo device to be (which was probably a mistake) Jan 01 19:44:57 Does Nokia Messaging have "push" functionality? Jan 01 19:45:12 AakashPatel, should. Jan 01 19:45:16 parted says it doesn't support ext3, meh Jan 01 19:45:24 AakashPatel: from the looks of it, not yet... Jan 01 19:45:25 Argh. Jan 01 19:45:29 :( Jan 01 19:45:32 fat can't do files >2G can it. Jan 01 19:45:40 * SpeedEvil stabs that killing his backup Jan 01 19:45:43 the internal memory is 2G anyway :) Jan 01 19:45:49 AakashPatel: i'm trying to figure that bit out :P Jan 01 19:46:10 angasule: I mean on the external Jan 01 19:46:16 http://wiki.maemo.org/User:Jebba/Fedora Ok, the HOWTO is there now Jan 01 19:46:29 the internal is used for apps and such, right? Jan 01 19:46:30 SpeedEvil: fat can't do 4gb Jan 01 19:46:56 SpeedEvil: Max file size on fat is 4GB minus 1 byte Jan 01 19:47:15 or 4GB minus 1 block size Jan 01 19:47:44 meh, so I have to choose between ext2 and fat, I guess, unless there is an easy way to format it to ext3? Jan 01 19:48:02 jebba: an interesting curiosity, but can you DO anything with Fedora yet? Jan 01 19:48:08 hmm, I'll make an ext2 and look for a way to turn on journalling later Jan 01 19:48:14 Gadgetoid_mbp: not that i know of ;) Jan 01 19:48:24 jebba: Well done, you win at geek! Jan 01 19:48:29 ~jebba++ Jan 01 19:48:29 heh Jan 01 19:49:03 Now put Ubuntu on it, with a gnome desktop, har! Jan 01 19:49:16 ext3 doesn't provide anything useful tbh Jan 01 19:49:25 ya, except that journaling thing Jan 01 19:49:40 which is useless on a user-mounted partition Jan 01 19:49:52 journaling, who needs journaling, if I wanted to remember what I'd changed, I'd write it down in a notebook! Jan 01 19:50:12 lol Jan 01 19:50:13 crashanddie: why on earth is journaling useless because it's user mounted? why would that make a difference? Jan 01 19:50:14 journaling helps in read / search speeds Jan 01 19:50:21 Gadgetoid_mbp: I tried using a notebook to help my memory, but I kept forgetting to write things down, or I'd forget to read it, or I'd forget the notebook Jan 01 19:50:26 I think I lost the notebook, actually Jan 01 19:50:26 uh, and in crash recovery.... Jan 01 19:50:27 and defragmenting Jan 01 19:50:29 I wish I was kidding :P Jan 01 19:50:54 Yeah I always pop up textedit/notepad/gedit to write things down Jan 01 19:50:57 hmm does linux "defragment"? Jan 01 19:51:01 like in windoze? Jan 01 19:51:01 And end up with lots of files called "notes" or "more notes" Jan 01 19:51:07 jebba: well, what's the point of journaling for a storage unit? (I'm assuming we're talking about the 32gb storage partition, and not system) Jan 01 19:51:24 AakashPatel: a lot less and for solid state media it doesnt matter Jan 01 19:51:47 Defragment is actually a big issue on solid state. Jan 01 19:51:50 crashanddie: uh, if you crash you can recover quickly. What's the difference where it is? and "storage unit"??? Jan 01 19:51:56 The eraseblock size is a few hundred K. Jan 01 19:51:59 ah Jan 01 19:52:27 hi Jan 01 19:52:30 i fsck my microSD all the time and i'm glad it's ext3 and not ext2 or it would take forever Jan 01 19:52:43 Random write behaviour can actually have pathalogical easily hit worst-cases of a few dozen K a second. Jan 01 19:52:44 You dirty fscker Jan 01 19:52:54 jebba: is that fscker or censored f word? Jan 01 19:53:08 nvm Jan 01 19:53:26 lol Jan 01 19:53:26 nerd pun. Jan 01 19:53:43 jebba: how do you accomplish that? excessive hacking? :) Jan 01 19:53:44 hiya. I used to use my shared my mobile 3G connection to my N810 tablet via bluetooth, but can't seem to figure out how to do this with N900 .. any ideas? found a thread on maemo talk but no solution... Jan 01 19:53:53 i want to install touchsearch but it says i am missing python-gobject - though i have all the extras repos applied Jan 01 19:54:07 dymaxion: install the thingy that makes the other thingy work Jan 01 19:54:21 dymaxion: you mean how to share, or how to share from Jan 01 19:54:25 dymaxion: you might need the DUN profile from extras (or is it extras-devel) ? Jan 01 19:54:35 angasule: yes Jan 01 19:54:36 dymaxion: are you wanting the n900 to be the modem Jan 01 19:54:38 That's the one Jan 01 19:54:40 DUN DUN DUN! Jan 01 19:54:56 Wouldn't 3G be PAN? Jan 01 19:54:57 have a great new years day everyone, I'll be snowboarding. Jan 01 19:55:05 is there any time of "push" mail solution for gmail for the n900? Jan 01 23:28:37 Is nokia planning to drop support for gtk on maemo because most of the news coming from nokia about maemo are mainly Qt related. Anybody knows? Jan 02 00:50:21 Caesium: over 30h or so Jan 02 00:50:26 (unless the AP is crap) Jan 02 00:50:38 Caesium, saves battery cycles. Jan 02 00:50:41 Caesium: I gave up at ~30h of testing. Jan 02 00:50:49 hmm hermes saved some time to fillup contact details :) Jan 02 00:50:51 gotta love it Jan 02 00:51:09 Caesium: wiht it simply reporting battery stats over ssh every 20s. And about an hour of normal use too Jan 02 00:51:12 now just give good/simple sw to rate up apps Jan 02 00:51:13 listening webradio lasts prolly 5-7 hours for me, cant exactly say because i usually do other things then too with the device Jan 02 00:51:23 cehteh: and yes, wlan on consumes power Jan 02 00:51:33 oh, where did you get the battery stats? I had a look for /proc/acpi but it's not there Jan 02 00:51:43 cehteh: the reciever - even though it's on for a short time only - uses a fair bit of power Jan 02 00:51:51 Caesium: lshal|grep batter Jan 02 00:51:53 SpeedEvil: yes but "just on" is quite less than transfering data Jan 02 00:52:03 ah, ta :) Jan 02 00:52:05 i usually have it all times on Jan 02 00:52:07 cehteh: not really that much Jan 02 00:52:33 cehteh: transmitting data generally isn't much more expensive than preparing that data to transmit Jan 02 00:52:53 that hardly makes a big drain, other things are more expensive, like i saied .. add the rss widget, update email automatically, have skype running Jan 02 00:53:55 well power issues are somewhat black magic .. with my device reflashed some days ago and have a dozen charge cylces now it lasts much longer than in the beginning Jan 02 00:54:12 that's another reason I'm letting it run down Jan 02 00:54:25 first days i was really unsatisfied, always less than 8 hours sometimes even only 4 hours Jan 02 00:54:49 anyone considered its because you were running around installing loads of stuff all day at first Jan 02 00:54:50 speaking of RSS, the RSS widget doesn't autoscroll anymore? Jan 02 00:54:52 you dont/should not run down a li-ion battery too often, thats not good for them Jan 02 00:55:06 lcuk: yeah prolly that too Jan 02 00:55:09 agreed, but once or twice to get it calibrated won't hurt it I think Jan 02 00:55:31 i wish it was possible to set maximum charge voltage Jan 02 00:55:32 my batteries go up and down like a hookers ass Jan 02 00:55:37 charging only to 980 Jan 02 00:55:41 sometimes they are full, sometimes not Jan 02 00:55:50 SpeedEvil: hm, why? :) Jan 02 00:55:52 90% does wonders for battery longevity Jan 02 00:55:52 sometimes they drain ocmpletely, othertimes they are drip fed Jan 02 00:55:54 well i now keep it on the charger while sitting and working, then its full when i disconnect Jan 02 00:56:33 and new batteries are not that expensive compared to a laptop battery so this is not a that big issue Jan 02 00:56:55 just having it last far less than a workday in the beginning was disappoiinting Jan 02 00:57:03 but looks ok now Jan 02 00:57:50 there are some bugs still .. turn wifi off and it sucks battery like no more Jan 02 00:58:06 sometimes xinput-sound gets stuck at 100% cpu Jan 02 00:58:34 watch out when the device gets warm .. prolly a good idea to look at it then, or reboot Jan 02 00:58:47 load-applet is handy for that :) Jan 02 00:59:08 well load applet wakes the cpu by itself Jan 02 01:01:40 * cehteh just scratches the design for an automatic profile switcher, based on a voting system, anyone here interested on such a project Jan 02 01:03:58 cehteh: voting system? Jan 02 01:05:04 http://pastebin.org/70410 config alike Jan 02 01:05:07 cehteh: http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Wishlist/Profiles - some thoughts Jan 02 01:05:45 that is there are 'engines' which query a certain thing, if the device is facing down, or about the time Jan 02 01:06:23 then this is looked up in the associated table, which in turn votes for some feature Jan 02 01:07:11 I'm planning on resizing partitions on the mmc. Shrinking p1 - the vfat - to 4G - and putting P4 - an ext2 - in the free space. Jan 02 01:07:17 like celluar = on, availability = offline and so on, after gone through all engines the votes are counted and wining things are set Jan 02 01:07:19 Anyone aware of any issues with this? Jan 02 01:07:33 I'm copying off the stuff in the vfat first Jan 02 01:07:48 i first thought about logic rules, but that becomes too complex to configure Jan 02 01:08:43 nite all, sweet dreams Jan 02 01:10:41 btw, how/where can i control the speaker and microphone volume when doing calls? i yesterday tried to call someone from a party and the phone was way to silent Jan 02 01:11:03 the hardware volume buttons Jan 02 01:11:48 mhm ok trying that next time, i had the impression they had no much effect Jan 02 01:14:14 waah .. who designed this? Jan 02 01:14:29 the volume buttons change direction in portrait mode Jan 02 01:15:02 yes Jan 02 01:15:11 It's retarded Jan 02 01:15:13 it's 'intuitively obviuous' Jan 02 01:15:21 or retarded. Jan 02 01:15:29 i vote for retarded Jan 02 01:15:40 They are the right direction in portrait, and not the wrong direction in landscape, Jan 02 01:15:52 but the switching directions is weird Jan 02 01:15:55 yes Jan 02 01:16:22 and i would like if phone volume is independent of music volume Jan 02 01:16:23 this wouldn't be an issue if the buttons were on the bottom (landscape) of the device Jan 02 01:16:40 and alarm volume Jan 02 01:16:52 alarm volume is already independent Jan 02 01:17:02 I wanted the alarm to be top volume without watching video at ear blasting loudness. Jan 02 01:17:07 really? Jan 02 01:17:22 iirc its set in ringtones Jan 02 01:17:26 I must be missing something Jan 02 01:17:50 but if I turn the main volume down, does it get quieter? Jan 02 01:18:08 profiles Jan 02 01:18:25 mhm no Jan 02 01:18:34 Actually, the color for the volume bar is inverted from what it should be. Jan 02 01:18:39 or its always max volume? Jan 02 01:18:53 well thats a minor issue Jan 02 01:19:28 I generally associate black with background more than yellow. Jan 02 01:19:36 * cehteh tries alarm Jan 02 01:19:39 It's minor, but it confused me the first time. Jan 02 01:20:05 there are a lot little things which can be done better Jan 02 01:20:57 yeah looks like alarm always goes up to max volume Jan 02 01:53:14 uhm welcome to the reboot :/ Jan 02 01:56:17 what recreates fstab? Jan 02 01:56:46 a pissed off fgirlfriend with a fknife Jan 02 02:02:14 cehteh: there are application profiles in pulseaudio config, it might be possible to do Jan 02 02:04:42 uhm wtf .. ssh asks me for password, was setup for key only Jan 02 02:05:14 you flashed? Jan 02 02:06:07 no .. but solved :) Jan 02 02:06:39 shared connection setup i have to initiate a connection as user, from my laptop first before i start root<>root rsync Jan 02 02:07:16 root has no ssh key on my lapto Jan 02 02:08:09 pupnik: well i am thinking about something which integrates it all in one thing Jan 02 02:08:45 An app volume setter gui? Jan 02 02:09:07 ah .. i thought you talked about the profile thing i talked earlier Jan 02 02:09:54 * pupnik is listening to the Dan Ellsberg interview from yesterday again Jan 02 02:11:51 cehteh: why not just do ssh root@phone ? Jan 02 02:12:12 with the key added to your user accounts keys it just works Jan 02 02:12:49 SpeedEvil: i exactly did that, but as root Jan 02 02:12:58 the root on my laptop has no key Jan 02 02:13:52 but i am using the ssh connection shareing feature of ssh .. so i can start ssh root@phone as user first after that i can do that from a sudo-root terminal too Jan 02 02:14:33 using pam-ssh sso Jan 02 02:14:42 never enter passphrases Jan 02 02:14:58 (almost, except for initial login) Jan 02 02:15:03 ah Jan 02 02:15:17 * SpeedEvil is rsyncing his laptop to back it up onto the phone. Jan 02 02:15:23 hard disk is doing odd things. Jan 02 02:15:52 is there tab complete in xchat maemo? Jan 02 02:15:59 anyone know where to find a man package? Jan 02 02:16:14 down on the docks Jan 02 02:16:26 :) Jan 02 02:17:01 * SpeedEvil was wondering about that the other night. Jan 02 02:17:17 about what options stupid busybox tar supported Jan 02 02:17:35 * SpeedEvil wants a nukebusybox package Jan 02 02:17:51 bash/findutils/... Jan 02 02:18:26 oh well, it was worth a shot Jan 02 02:19:00 a friend and i have found that upon installing certain packages, we have no clue what the associated commands are... no one specific package though Jan 02 02:21:01 something broken on package 'heimdal' Jan 02 02:21:02 Warning: Unknown: Failed to write session data (memcache). Please verify that the current setting of session.save_path is correct (tcp://maemovm4.dmz:11211) in Unknown on line 0 Jan 02 02:21:33 http://maemo.org/packages/view/heimdal/ Jan 02 02:23:06 so rsync backup, with important files under git .. should be fine now :) Jan 02 02:24:24 Nokia-N900-42-11:~# du -a / | sort -rn | head -80 Jan 02 02:24:24 ... lets see if the device survives that :P Jan 02 02:26:03 wow .. was even fast Jan 02 02:27:56 The device is sruprisingly capable. Jan 02 02:28:46 unless the watchdog disagrees Jan 02 02:46:49 ya, i rsync the entire device and it rips thru it pretty quick Jan 02 02:56:10 arrg reboot again Jan 02 02:56:49 just listening music and doing nothing else on the device Jan 02 02:58:29 uhm sw_rst .. wtf ... **** ENDING LOGGING AT Sat Jan 02 02:59:57 2010
