**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Sat Feb 10 03:00:01 2018 Feb 10 15:51:34 Hello all, I am thinking about buying a Nokia N900. As Alternative I could buy a Sony Xperia X with Sailfish OS. But I like Maemo UI more. On the other side I read that Easy Debian will stop with Debian 8 in March 2018 and without modern browser I think a smartphone isn't so good. I saw the Meamo Leste project, too, what gives me hope... What would you suggest? Sailfish/Sony or the good old Nokia N900? Thanks, Max Feb 10 15:54:38 i have faith in Maemo-Leste, since i installed it and it ran, including wifi and browser and hildon Feb 10 15:55:13 i can't recommend either way though Feb 10 15:57:04 @pkill9 thank you very much for your suggestion... Feb 10 15:57:26 well don't need to be passive-aggressive Feb 10 15:57:39 Also for me the election is very hard. Sailfish would be the more modern approach Feb 10 15:59:54 well, when i say i don't recommend either way, i mean based only on what's available currently (ignoring that maemo-leste may be good replacmenet in the future), i wouldn't recommend n900, and i don't know anything about the other phone or Sailfish to give you recommendation on that. Also I don't know what you need in a smartphone other than it to have modern browser Feb 10 16:00:22 personally i just avoid smartphones, nokia n900 is last one i got Feb 10 16:00:42 i'll use it again if maemo-leste fulfills it's promises Feb 10 16:01:13 smartphones just get out of date because of needlessly more and more bloated websites Feb 10 16:01:57 and marketing tells you you need to get the new iphone because reasons Feb 10 16:02:49 For me the Nokia N900 or the Sailfish Sony phone would be my first smartphone :-) Feb 10 16:03:31 I don't think, that I will be a extensive user. But a little bit browsing in the internet and navigation would be cool.. Feb 10 16:03:47 assuming that maemo-leste fulfills it's promises, i would definitely choose n900 Feb 10 16:04:49 it's a phone that's hardware has stood the test of time Feb 10 16:05:11 e.g. no major problems over time, decent battery life Feb 10 16:05:34 yes, this is really right and impressive. Feb 10 16:05:39 (discounting modem & USB problems) Feb 10 16:05:55 oh yeah, USB if you aren't careful Feb 10 16:06:02 sicelo: what modem problems are there? Feb 10 16:07:25 many N900 have modems that stopped working. no fix available. in Maemo, the message you get is "All Telephony Functions Disabled" Feb 10 16:07:48 at least the USB problem can be fixed/avoided. Feb 10 16:08:19 with modem, the only theory is that try no to press too hard on your keyboard, as that is what might be causing the modems to get 'loose' Feb 10 16:09:43 hmm sony Xperia X isn't too expensive Feb 10 16:09:58 but, i'd still choose N900 :) Feb 10 16:15:24 Ok, you are a little bit biased ;-) The Sony I could get for 180 € + 50 € for Sailfish. The Nokia would be 100 €. Perhaps I should give the Nokia a try... Feb 10 16:16:27 Sailfish costs 50 euros? Feb 10 16:16:44 i'm biased, or pkill9? :) Feb 10 16:17:21 the hwkbd is really the best think about N900 (Droid 4 also has hwkbd) Feb 10 16:17:31 s/think/thing/ Feb 10 16:17:31 sicelo meant: the hwkbd is really the best thing about N900 (Droid 4 also has hwkbd) Feb 10 16:20:35 I think you could also flash a community port. But the official port from Jolla costs 49,90 €. But I have no problem with it. I want to support communities that support Linux... Yeah, the hardware keyboard is nice ;-) The Droid I havn't noticed untill now. Does Maemo/Linux run there? Feb 10 16:21:04 I saw Maemo Leste will have a port... But at the moment? Feb 10 16:24:10 Max___: https://wizzup.org/droid4-hd-1.mp4 ... still many rough edges, but it's coming for sure :) Feb 10 16:27:42 anyway, use/choose what suits you, as pkill9 already mentioned Feb 10 16:27:54 \o Feb 10 16:32:46 @sicelo thanks for your help Feb 10 17:13:44 Max___, Droid 4 also have unofficial SailfishOS port, but hardware is rather outdated... **** BEGIN LOGGING AT Sat Feb 10 20:47:47 2018 **** ENDING LOGGING AT Sun Feb 11 03:00:00 2018
