**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Tue May 31 23:59:56 2005 Jun 01 10:22:16 I'm still having trouble getting my slug to recognize a disk that I want to unsling to. If I boot with the disk installed it shows up fine. It's an old 10G Fujitsu in a Q-Tec box. Jun 01 10:29:57 hasse, you mean when you power up the slug with the disk attached you can use it and when you boot without disk attached then logged in root and attaching the disk it wont get reconized ? Jun 01 10:30:27 If I boot with the disk installed, it shows up in the web gui as "Not formated". Jun 01 10:30:49 If I boot up without the disk, enable telnet, login as root, and attach the disk, it doesn't show up. Jun 01 10:31:07 ok did you ever formated it first ? Jun 01 10:31:12 I've tried formatting it from the web gui and then repeating, but it doesn't make any difference. Jun 01 10:31:17 It formats OK, though. Jun 01 10:31:40 The README talks about "now is the time to format", but doesn't mention how, BTW. Jun 01 10:32:00 with the web interface Jun 01 10:32:23 you tried to connect it on the other usb port ? Jun 01 10:32:29 I guessed so, but as I said it doesn't work since I can't see it. Jun 01 10:32:34 I've tried the other port. Jun 01 10:32:48 And I've tried a couple of other disks of approximately the same age and size. Jun 01 10:33:21 humm Jun 01 10:34:46 The slug I have has worked OK before. A friend used it before without problems. Now I want to connect my disk and unsling that, but I can't quite get that far... Jun 01 10:35:22 is the same slug that your friend used ? Jun 01 10:35:26 Yep. Jun 01 10:35:31 did you tried to flash over ? Jun 01 10:35:40 No. Jun 01 10:36:07 I've done all the steps in the README up to formatting the disk except for the actual flashing, since it was already flashed. Jun 01 10:36:58 oh my well i can't really help on that maybe caplink or glc Jun 01 10:37:01 can Jun 01 10:37:24 * hasse waits for caplink811_away or glc. Jun 01 12:10:17 Seems I need a Yahoo account to read that... Jun 01 12:11:53 k, only found one report for q-tec, with a 2.5"hd, this worked well Jun 01 12:12:23 I'm getting there, I just need to dredge up my account details and join and so... Jun 01 12:13:37 That's not the exact one (mine is 3.5"), but at least it doesn't say "No". My friend who flashed the unit used the same enclosure, though. Jun 01 12:14:17 my swedish is much more worse then my english, but the box has a seperate power supply? Jun 01 12:14:23 Yep. Jun 01 12:14:54 I'm impressed if non-Swedes understand *any* Swedish. Jun 01 12:43:47 hasse: k Jun 01 12:46:37 caplink811: With the new disk (Seagate 200G) everything appears to "work" as before... Jun 01 12:46:45 # ls /proc/scsi Jun 01 12:46:45 scsi usb-storage-1 Jun 01 12:47:12 as before - means everything went fine, or means everything is bad as before? Jun 01 12:53:04 nope ;-) Jun 01 12:53:35 So what now? Jun 01 12:53:40 does anybody knows of a little tool which let's me access (read/write) my ext3-partion on my USB-drive on Windows? Jun 01 12:53:41 imho that's an extract from /proc/bus/usb/devices Jun 01 12:53:42 Would it help me to reflash? Jun 01 12:54:26 Wolf_HFS: yes, just one moment, it's at www.nslu2-info.de, will search for that topic Jun 01 12:54:38 hasse: I don't think so. It's a driver problem I would guess. So the kernel (including the drivers) won't change on a re-flash Jun 01 12:55:04 caplink811: ok. You got me. I'll register :) Jun 01 12:55:05 hasse: i think no, imho you've a problem with the combination disk/enclosure Jun 01 12:55:09 Mhm... Jun 01 12:55:31 I've tried four or five different disks of three different manufacturers. Jun 01 12:56:08 Wolf_HFS, you dont need it Jun 01 12:56:44 Wolf_HFS, well your slug is still SMB or you changed system for nsf ? :) Jun 01 12:56:44 * hasse tries to find out what type of disk was used last time. Jun 01 12:56:52 Wolf_HFS: http://www.fs-driver.org/download.html Jun 01 12:57:25 Wolf_HFS: Ext2FS.Anywhere.v3.0 produced by Paragon Jun 01 12:57:26 caplink811 you knew you can do it without that. just doing \\192.x.x.x slug ip :P Jun 01 12:57:42 you will browse you whole slug file via SMB Jun 01 12:57:58 as admin rw of course ;) Jun 01 12:58:03 yeah Jun 01 12:58:06 But the partitons are ext3 not ext2 Jun 01 12:58:30 Wolf_HFS you still see it and can work on editing etc Jun 01 12:58:31 reading would work. But I want to write too. So the driver need's to support ext3 too Jun 01 12:58:50 Wolf_HFS: the forum said, it does what the users want, myself never try that, it's much easier to boot knoppix Jun 01 12:59:02 :) Jun 01 12:59:08 BioK: my preferd way is ssh and scp Jun 01 12:59:17 but that's slow Jun 01 12:59:22 s/preferd/prefered Jun 01 13:01:51 ok well i do the knoppix way since i change it to nsf lol Jun 01 13:07:59 humm i got a great question over here Jun 01 13:08:22 questions, questions, whats about solutions ;-) Jun 01 13:08:53 since slug doenst work with usb-hub does it will work if i take an ide-to-usb then attach two drive on a classic ide cable and connect this cable to the ide to usb then on slug Jun 01 13:09:14 yeah hehe but to get solution we have to give a try but to give a try we need money :P Jun 01 13:09:31 so question sometime give awnser cause someone more rich that you alrealy tried haha Jun 01 13:09:45 1st, slug works with an usb hub Jun 01 13:10:15 really damn then i should does something wrong gonna retry it Jun 01 13:10:19 2nd you couldn't attach more than 2 drives, cause the driver will not accept more than 2 (unslung) Jun 01 13:10:36 oh! Ok Jun 01 13:10:55 the slug only knows /dev/sda and /dev/sdb Jun 01 13:11:50 humm Jun 01 13:11:59 if i attach a webcam it will count as /dev/sdb ? Jun 01 13:12:12 cause then i will have 2 hdd on disk1 and a webcam on disk2 haha Jun 01 13:12:30 sorry, means harddisks Jun 01 13:12:55 okay :) Jun 01 13:13:12 but, ithink, it's possible to use a hub, two hdd's and a cam or a printer, but thats my oppinion Jun 01 13:13:38 who know ;) why not trying i will for sure Jun 01 13:15:58 caplink811: is this a hard constraint whit the two disks or are there just the associated files in /dev missing (sd[c-f][1-4])? Jun 01 13:19:27 Wolf_HFS: imho it's hardcoded in the scsi driver, which is changed by linksys Jun 01 13:19:46 but openslug would support more than 2 hdd's Jun 01 13:20:11 oh yeah really humm interessing interessing! Jun 01 13:20:27 ok Jun 01 13:20:30 let bring the bigest gigabytes ever made :P Jun 01 13:20:42 i need damn space haha Jun 01 13:21:03 stupid cable connection you made downloading all this stuff Jun 01 13:21:35 being really interested in openslug, but my problem, have only one hdd at hand in the moment, which contains data in it :-( Jun 01 13:21:51 Samma. Jun 01 13:22:04 Sorry, wrong channel. Jun 01 13:22:09 np Jun 01 13:23:55 caplink811, oh well i know what you talk about :( Jun 01 13:24:10 i should format but no place at this moment to store my data haha Jun 01 13:25:36 OK, now I've tried another Q-tec disk case, just like the previous one. Same result, i.e. nothing. Bah. Jun 01 13:26:02 it's not a problem of space, but a problem of time, 35gb mp3's, that took some time to copy it :-( Jun 01 13:26:26 well start copy while you sleep :) Jun 01 13:26:55 hasse: have you a enclosure of an other manufacturer by hand, ideally with an cypress chipset? Jun 01 13:27:06 Unfortunately, no. Jun 01 13:27:18 caplink811 what kind of case use cypress chipset ? Jun 01 13:27:37 The irritating thing is that I got this slug and enclosure from a friend who had no problems with them, only with a different disk in the enclosure. Jun 01 13:28:08 in my case, its a combination with an icy case (350U) and a samsung 80 gb disk, everything works well Jun 01 13:28:36 ok Jun 01 13:29:35 it seems to be a general problem with different drive/case combination, which causes problems Jun 01 13:30:23 well give complain on the slug box it say any disk! :P Jun 01 13:31:01 So why can it access it when it's there at boot? Jun 01 13:31:33 oh well forgot that thing . Jun 01 13:31:39 well is weird i dont really know what to say Jun 01 13:31:58 but rumours in the forums said, there will be problems with big sized maxtors too, but these are recommended by linksys Jun 01 13:32:41 i agree! Jun 01 13:32:54 i had problem with a onetouch 300gb Jun 01 13:33:01 The disk I'm using now is the only one that's "big"; the others are 10-20GB. Jun 01 13:33:17 and when the onetouch is formated by the slug Jun 01 13:33:38 you can't never use the powerful backup button technoligy provided by maxtor! oh well Jun 01 13:34:01 hm, hasse you're on unslung something at this time? so you can tail -f /var/log/messages to see if something mysterious occurs Jun 01 13:34:34 * caplink811 feed the cat Jun 01 13:34:53 * sd_attach:1 Jun 01 13:34:53 Attached scsi disk sdb at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 Jun 01 13:34:53 SCSI device sdb: 390721968 512-byte hdwr sectors (200050 MB) Jun 01 13:34:53 Partition check: Jun 01 13:34:53 unknown partition table Jun 01 13:34:53 WARNING: USB Mass Storage data integrity not assured Jun 01 13:34:55 USB Mass Storage device found at 2 Jun 01 13:35:05 Looks good to me. Jun 01 13:35:19 looks good :) Jun 01 13:35:47 if this drive is unformatted, ok, if its formatted, than there may be a problem Jun 01 13:36:22 I just unpacked it from the mail, so it should be unformatted. Jun 01 13:40:20 hm, in my mail are only outstanding accounts, this day, so its a nice idea to change ;-) Jun 01 13:40:44 Heh. I usually get those as well... Jun 01 13:41:48 just see, whats on youre usb port 1? Jun 01 13:42:52 Right now, nothing. I just tried with port 2. Jun 01 13:43:34 k, but before, you've tried it at port 1? yes, i think so.. Jun 01 13:44:05 Most of the times, yes. Jun 01 13:46:44 The instructions say "shut down slug", btw. Does it matter whether I use the button on the front or if I pull the cable? Jun 01 13:47:43 well pulling the cable when you will have data is not really recommended haha Jun 01 13:48:04 dunno, usally myself use /usr/sbin/Do_Reboot Jun 01 13:48:04 Right. That's a later problem, for now... Jun 01 13:50:05 well Jun 01 13:50:18 i would say do you have an usb stick nearby ? :) Jun 01 13:50:22 * caplink811 went out of ideas at the moment :-( Jun 01 13:50:54 I have a 64MB stick, but that's a bit small to be useful I guess. Jun 01 13:51:05 oh! Jun 01 13:51:07 yeah too small Jun 01 13:51:09 BioK: thats an nice idea, but should be greater or equal than 256mb Jun 01 13:51:13 need at least 256 Jun 01 13:51:17 yeah Jun 01 13:54:38 bye folks Jun 01 13:55:57 I'm off to bed now, but if anyone comes up with any kind of tip for me, just poke me and say it.
