**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Mon Jul 11 23:59:57 2005 Jul 12 00:41:25 Is anyone here? Jul 12 15:18:04 Hello Jul 12 15:18:12 so, what does it mean when /dev/sda2 (/share/hdd/conf) gets mounted ro, and when I fsck it it finds and fixes the error, and then when I reboot it mounts /dev/sda2 as readonly again? I just posted to the groups mailing list but then figured #nslu2-linux would be best anyway Jul 12 15:18:14 hello again Jul 12 15:18:18 ;-) Jul 12 15:18:49 and dyoung was right... it's probably a quota issue Jul 12 15:19:12 you can always boot w/o hd, then hotplug to see if the partition gets mounted rw Jul 12 15:19:14 ... anyway ,as I was saying. FAQ34 is about quotas. (Firstly I didn't think quotas applied to the conf partition, but hey). Secondly, did anyone misread the bit above where I said I needed to fsck the drive? Jul 12 15:19:27 no, noone misread that... Jul 12 15:19:32 journal_bmap: journal block not found at offset 268 on sd(8,2) Jul 12 15:19:32 Aborting journal on device sd(8,2). Jul 12 15:19:32 ext3_abort called. Jul 12 15:19:32 EXT3-fs abort (device sd(8,2)): ext3_journal_start: Detected aborted journal Jul 12 15:19:32 Remounting filesystem read-only Jul 12 15:19:43 Is that what one would normally expect from dmesg due to quotas? Jul 12 15:20:29 but you state that you corrected that? Jul 12 15:20:48 So the questions are: 1, this is a new (under 1yr) hdd, could it be a bad batch? 2, fsck fixes the errro but dmesg reports it again on the NEXT REBOOT Jul 12 15:21:11 2, (cont), any idea what causes that behaviour? 3, could I modify fstab to always mount /dev/sda2 as sync? Jul 12 15:21:33 btw, did you sync after correcting the error? Jul 12 15:21:59 I'm not sure if 3 is necessarily going to help or hinder, but I wasn't sure where to make such a modification (can I just change /etc/fstab or do I need to modify /linuxrc)? Jul 12 15:22:35 and as far as hds go, my less than 3 month old (from manufacture date) samsung carpped out less than a week ago Jul 12 15:22:38 ByronT yeah.. at least, I tried that the last time. I'm going to have another go now and see if I'm still getting this behaviour Jul 12 15:22:45 ByronT hmm, yuk.. Jul 12 15:22:54 the easy test is to reboot without hd attached Jul 12 15:23:17 telnet in with root/uNSLUng, and then check the hotplugging Jul 12 15:23:48 and yeah, you could just have a bad hd Jul 12 15:24:16 ByronT ok thanks. when you say "check the hotplugging" - check what exactly? Jul 12 15:24:24 or a bad sector on the hd, try using the hd manufacturer tool to mark it as bad Jul 12 15:24:51 you state that it won't mount on boot as rw Jul 12 15:25:00 ByronT that is correct.. Jul 12 15:25:18 hotplugging - after boot - will let you see if the partition will mount rw then Jul 12 15:26:58 Does reboot automatically sync? Actually, does sync take args (sync /dev/sda2 )? Jul 12 15:28:45 I don't think reboot auto syncs Jul 12 15:28:57 and sync does not take arguments (that I know of) Jul 12 15:33:57 Hmmm... slug seems to have hung when I plugged the disk in after reboot... guessing that's not a "good sign"... Jul 12 15:34:10 probably not Jul 12 15:34:15 what kind of drive? Jul 12 15:34:27 (manufacturer) Jul 12 15:34:42 3.5" (Maxtor? i think) in a generic (not Genesys.. ) enclosure. Jul 12 15:35:08 Can't remember enclosure chipset, ADI ? three letters, beginning with A, anyway... Jul 12 15:36:17 Had other problems too (discussed on mailing list before) before this point - i.e. slug would often hang while booting *with* disk attached. Someone suggested the drive wasn't being recognised within 10 seconds or something, but I guess nobody else either uses this enclosure with the slug or my disk has always been faulty? Jul 12 15:36:29 I would check the drive out separately Jul 12 15:36:39 it's sounding more and more like a bad disk Jul 12 15:38:13 ByronT ok.. my mp3 player's harddrive recently started failing. bad timing because my slug has my mp3 backups .. :-( Jul 12 15:39:37 you could use a LiveCD linux distro to copy the stuff from the data partition onto another drive Jul 12 15:39:45 ByronT - I'll plug the disk into my PC and see how things go. Last time I tried that it seemed to mount fine, last batch of problems were only on the slug. but yeah, if it's actually the disk, then worth checking Jul 12 15:39:59 ByronT - yep, that's what I had in mind (unfortunately I have no other disks large enough) Jul 12 15:40:16 the issue is that if the conf partition is munched, then a lot of what you say has been happening would be the result Jul 12 15:41:29 Yeah that's pretty much the conclusion I was reluctantly coming round to. Low-level format and rebuild? Jul 12 15:41:44 the good thing is that if the drive is less than a year old, getting a replacement shouldn't be too bad Jul 12 15:41:52 hope so Jul 12 15:42:06 if the drive is really really bad (as mine was) low-level format is just a waste of time Jul 12 15:43:25 I saved my PC hdd that way - I was just getting ready to replace it when I gave the manufacturer's diagnostic tool a chance. Ok so it wiped everything, but it was just a windoze PC and there was plenty of space on slug for my data files. Wish I'd upgraded the hdd now so I could do the reverse operation :-( ! Jul 12 15:44:04 ByronT - any chance any of the above could be caused by a faulty enclosure? Jul 12 15:44:49 possibly - but you can check by using the manufacture tool to test the disk when plugged in directly to your computer Jul 12 15:45:06 (which is what I did with my Carpsung drive) Jul 12 15:45:27 sure Jul 12 15:45:33 ByronT - thanks! Jul 12 15:45:39 good luck **** ENDING LOGGING AT Tue Jul 12 23:59:57 2005
