**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Wed May 24 09:59:57 2006 May 24 13:01:46 almost everytime i shutdown my nslu2 (running unslung 5.5) i have to fsck my disk and loose lots of files! May 24 14:37:32 is d-i for debianSlug easily usable now? May 24 14:38:03 and can i flash its image from unslung-5.5 web interface? May 24 14:47:26 <[FG-HC]Eiffel> 1. dunno May 24 14:47:41 <[FG-HC]Eiffel> 2. nope you need to go into upgrade mode und use sercomm or upslug May 24 15:32:42 is the upgrade mode one gets using the reset button the same as the "Enter Upgrade Mode" button in unslung-5.5 web interface? May 24 16:03:25 tuv: sometimes :-) Actually, yes, it's the same upgrade mode. Apparently there have been problems with entering that update mode reliably from the web interface in 5.5 -- so that method is not recommended (and that page is completely non-functional in 6.8). May 24 16:03:53 Use the reset button technique; it's the best way. May 24 16:14:33 Morning May 24 16:16:34 Anyone got any ideas why my sluh is booting up unslung even though the drive is attached? May 24 16:16:46 after a restart, it did boot up unslung May 24 16:52:00 i'm installing debianSlug on a 250GB disk.. "Creating ext3 file system" screen has been at 0% for like half an hour now.. is this usual? May 24 16:52:25 there appears to be disk activity though May 24 16:58:32 are the nfs kernel modules available for debianslug? the page: http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/DebianSlug/SetupNFSServer suggests building debianSlug to get the modules! what if i installed from d-i? May 24 17:17:42 still at 0% :( May 24 17:18:26 another half hour May 24 17:33:44 hm, i'm just about to order an nslu2 + usb 54g adapter to replace my old notebook... but i am a little hesitant because of http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/Peripherals/WirelessNetworkAdapter May 24 17:39:03 ah, whatever, i guess it will have to work May 24 18:03:29 still at 0% :( May 24 18:15:39 it's bee almost two hours now and d-i is still showing "Creating ext3 file system" at 0%! May 24 18:15:57 *been May 24 18:19:50 nkuttler: there have been some troubles with the zd1211 drivers for both Unslung and Openslug. The driver is operational again in the latest versions (source versions), but I can't say it's perfectly stable. May 24 18:20:13 does the nslu2 require swap space? May 24 18:21:31 I have a preformmatted ext3 disk that I want to use with it,... and I want to know if it will work May 24 18:21:32 Depends on what you do with it. Swap is not required if you do nothing more than what it was designed to do, but anything else (including just logging in with SSH) runs the risk of running the machine - temporarily at least - out of memory. May 24 18:21:53 ok May 24 18:22:26 If all you want to do is mount the ext3 disk, and share it with samba, you should be ok -- the Linksys programs can't do that for you so they shouldn't be running at the same time. May 24 18:23:31 ok, so to use an old ext3 drive, I will have to use alt. firmware? May 24 18:24:22 Yes. May 24 18:25:29 Cool :) May 24 18:25:56 Think of it as an adventure ;) May 24 18:28:13 for my (simple) goal, will unslung work? May 24 18:29:34 Sure. What's your level of familiarity with Linux, in general? May 24 18:30:06 you can use a swap file wihtin your ext3 partition May 24 18:30:20 Pretty fair. I am getting an nslu because my debian box bit the dust May 24 18:30:30 fan... died. It was ugly :) May 24 18:30:46 I used it as a firewall, samba server, mt-daapd server May 24 18:31:38 tuv: the drive is already formatted and partitioned with data :) May 24 18:32:02 anotherguy123, so.. you can't create another file? May 24 18:32:10 Unslung will work, but you won't have nearly the tools you would like unless you unsling it to a flash device or a disk. May 24 18:32:30 k May 24 18:33:33 anotherguy123, see http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/AddAdditionalSwapSpace May 24 18:34:22 oh, cool I didnt know you could do that. May 24 18:36:15 mwester, is it usual for the "Creating ext3 file system" screen to stay at 0% throughout d-i install phase? it's been more than two hours now! with steady disk activity May 24 18:36:48 i'm not even sure if the ssh session is still alive! May 24 18:37:43 tuv: I don't know d-i --- but it might be ok on a huge disk. May 24 18:38:15 unslung did not take that long formatting the same disk May 24 18:39:34 it feels like the installer is proceeding with no feedback.. but can never now.. May 24 18:39:40 *know May 24 18:40:35 I hate when that happens. It's like booting Windows -- the little bar on the bottom of the splash screen moves, but you never know it the drivers are loading or if it hung again... May 24 18:41:24 The ASCII spinners are ok to indicate that something's happening, but even just a line of "periods" being printed as something is happening is helpful. May 24 18:42:42 ~botsnack May 24 18:42:43 mwester: :) May 24 18:43:42 well.. it's supposed to at least show something other than 0%.. i mean it has means to show its activity.. but for some reason it's not May 24 18:47:38 will a 256mb flash drive work for the "unslinging" port 2 disk? May 24 18:49:34 nm. Getting ahead of myself... May 24 18:55:11 well... I'm off to the store to get an nslu2!! yay! May 24 19:01:29 has anyone here installed debianSlug and experienced such behaviour? ("Creating ext3 file system" screen at 0% forever!) May 24 19:01:47 or different behaviour for that matter May 24 19:13:28 tuv: you might try the openslug channel as well... May 24 19:13:56 mwester, hmm.. ok May 24 20:40:38 just to let you know guys.. i restarted d-i and it's showing progress now.. no more 0% **** ENDING LOGGING AT Thu May 25 09:59:58 2006
