**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Mon Jul 10 02:59:56 2006 Jul 10 06:24:31 anyone noticed this => http://www.airlinktek.com/english/prod_mg35.htm ? Jul 10 06:24:51 I just got mine today for 159$CAD Jul 10 06:29:40 ide port, composite/s-video/component hd outputs , high quality 192khz DAC , sigma EM8511 , 24mb sdram 4mb flash ethernet , ide port, usb host, ir receiver and it runs linux Jul 10 07:24:15 is there anything similar to badblocks for unslung? Jul 10 13:16:30 hello! Jul 10 13:17:03 ahh Jul 10 13:17:07 a better frog name Jul 10 13:17:15 Hello! Jul 10 13:17:39 i was thinking about getting a usbstick to hold my os for my nslu2 (just bought and havent even unpacked it) Jul 10 13:18:10 from what i seen there should be no problem with a disk like this http://sandisk.com/Products/Item(1222)-SDCZ4-2048-SanDisk_Cruzer_Micro_USB_Flash_Drive_2GB.aspx Jul 10 13:18:15 am i correct? Jul 10 13:18:41 with the size of 2 GB it should automaticly recognize it as a largedisk and ext3 format it Jul 10 13:18:43 or? Jul 10 13:22:19 Petfrogg: The stock Linksys firmware treats all devices smaller than 10GB as flash devices, and will not format them. Jul 10 13:23:00 hmm Jul 10 13:23:15 Unslung treats *no* devices as flash devices; and will let you try to format them (even if they are too small, as seems to be the case with some 256MB sticks.) Jul 10 13:23:58 hmm so as default i can not format them but i could do it using my Linux on my Powerbook and then use it? Jul 10 13:24:09 just as long as i do it ext2 or ext3? Jul 10 13:24:38 No, the Linksys firmware will not mount the device unless it is a FAT filesystem Jul 10 13:24:55 hmm... Jul 10 13:25:21 so it will only work if flash the firmware then i suppose... Jul 10 13:25:22 or? Jul 10 13:26:58 i read this http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/FAQ/RootOnAUSBFlash but that might not be correct then? Jul 10 13:27:37 Depends on what you want it to do, of course. The standard firmware works very well for many Linksys customers. Folks on this channel mostly run either the Unslung or the OpenSlug firmware. Flash devices are treated differently with the alternate firmwares. Jul 10 13:28:12 ok.. Jul 10 13:28:18 i will continue my resarch then Jul 10 13:28:37 i was thinking bout installing GentooSlug on it - that is why i ask Jul 10 13:28:37 Regardign the wiki article: Yep, that's supposed to be correct; what part of it seems to be in error? Jul 10 13:29:07 i thought you said that it wont format it to ext3 neither use it for handling os stuff Jul 10 13:29:13 i might have missunderstood you Jul 10 13:29:20 GentooSlug AFAIK would be custom firmware; it would not be subject to the limitations of the Linksys firmware. No reason it wouldn't work. Jul 10 13:29:37 ok Jul 10 13:29:53 Re: ext3 -- the *stock* Linksys code won't format the stick; the wiki page is referring to the replacement Unslung firmware (which will format it ext3) Jul 10 13:30:01 it is gonna be a loooong and interesting week this one Jul 10 13:30:17 thank you very much for you helpfullness mwester - really appriciate it Jul 10 13:32:05 No problem. There is much information -- often *too* much -- in the wiki. On the lower right is the "last modification date"; use that when you encounter conflicting or confusing information to determine if a page may be out of date or referring to older releases of firmware. OpenSlug pages have been recently cleaned up, they are better than the Unslung pages. Enjoy the NSLU2, it's a lot... Jul 10 13:32:06 ...of fun! Jul 10 13:32:33 heh, I should buy another :p Jul 10 13:32:37 yes i think it will Jul 10 13:32:59 and i am allready thinking the same thoughts as joga - and i havent even opened the box from the store yet Jul 10 13:33:02 the one I already have does a fine job as the home fileserver...I'd like a second one for public internet www server and dns Jul 10 13:33:21 joga: i would like to have ssh on it to Jul 10 13:33:31 maybe svn and cvs too Jul 10 13:33:36 well, I have sshd running on it Jul 10 13:33:47 not that I need to log in very often, mostly to check uptime heh Jul 10 13:34:01 then use www.no-ip.org to have access from the outside Jul 10 13:34:53 (then later on build into a fulltower case with another computer so everything is inside - then my gf wont complain about the waste amount of computers building up at home) Jul 10 13:34:58 (out of sight - out of mind) Jul 10 13:35:25 heh, my slug is behind the couch :) Jul 10 13:41:03 joga: you sneaky b*****d. 8 ) Jul 10 22:15:57 hi there. is anyone here familiar with iptables? i'm trying to setup a wireless router running iptables to allow wireless clients to access only the nslu2, and nothing else on the same subnet. altogether i'd like to still be able to ssh into that router, still from the same subnet. i'm trying to do something with the FORWARD chain, but i can't get it to work. Jul 10 22:17:48 what i have understood is that the FORWARD chain affects packets going through the router used as a gateway (=> wireless client to nslu2). on the other hand, the packets directly addressed to or originating from the router should be unaffected. Jul 10 22:18:33 can someone tell if this interpretatin is right? Jul 10 22:20:06 le-lemurien, i think you're asking in the wrong channel ;) seems like no iptables experts in here ;) Jul 10 22:21:20 heh i'm afraid so.. maybe it's worth pasting in #nslu2-linux Jul 10 22:22:38 do you want to set up the nslu2 as a router or are you using some other router (w/ openwrt e.g) Jul 10 22:23:31 i'm running a wrt54gl with dd-wrt Jul 10 22:23:43 two of them, actually ;) Jul 10 22:24:11 with the slug, it makes a nice crowd of embedded linux Jul 10 22:24:40 nice ;) got a wrt54g v3.1 w/ dd-wrt and a netgear wgt634u w/ openwrt kamikaze and a dbox2 running linux ;) Jul 10 22:26:08 i have a netgear wgr614 too. is the wgt643 broadcom based? Jul 10 22:26:28 i didn't know there was a netgear that could run openwrt Jul 10 22:26:34 maybe someone in #iptables can help you ;) i'm just checking some cron-scripts and after that i'll be heading towards my bed :) Jul 10 22:27:05 wgt634u is broadcom based too. 1xusb 2.0, 8mb flash, 32mb ram Jul 10 22:27:20 http://wiki.openwrt.org/TableOfHardware Jul 10 22:27:27 oooh... wireless and usb all in one... Jul 10 22:28:33 what i'm doing that requires that iptables trick is a free acces captive portal without nocat Jul 10 22:28:35 yup. it's acting as a wlan AP, usb-printer-server und usb-scanner-server :) Jul 10 22:28:54 can it be "unslung" Jul 10 22:29:42 the wgt634? Jul 10 22:30:09 yes..? that would be great Jul 10 22:30:11 you can install debian-mips on it (using an usb-root) Jul 10 22:30:37 http://wiki.openwrt.org/OpenWrtDocs/Hardware/Netgear/WGT634U#head-935f37d40f701cf3dde45ac3cc0e3c9133c82435 Jul 10 22:32:05 that box rocks Jul 10 22:32:26 http://www.cyrius.com/debian/bcm947xx/wgt634u/ Jul 10 22:32:55 it's just a little slow Jul 10 22:37:30 just found my wgr614v6 in the compatibility list! ok you're a loss at iptables issue, but that netgear openwrt compatibility hint is worth gold, thanks ;) Jul 10 22:37:45 no problem ;) Jul 10 22:38:14 ah wait Jul 10 22:38:18 duh Jul 10 22:38:33 thare's the nasty "status" column Jul 10 22:38:39 whych reads "no" Jul 10 22:39:05 true ;) Jul 10 22:39:07 ok finally, you weren't useful at all ;p Jul 10 22:39:45 go get a 634u... they're pretty cheap at ebay.. about 30euros Jul 10 22:40:52 i have to stop drooling... my friends consider three routers is enough to make me a weirdo. and a wrt with a slug around will about the same job Jul 10 22:42:41 i need to have 2 routers. the wrt54g is acting as a wireless client bridge and the wgt634u is acting as an AP (it's faster than WDS) Jul 10 22:48:09 that's - exactly - my setup, except that i use gateway client mode, and that the other wrt is (will be, actually) offering the open AP directed to the website on the nslu2. ant the netgear is used to access the network by two pcs Jul 10 22:54:16 hmmm... actually i don't think i can use iptable to prevent wireless client from pinging my other machines on the network. i'll have to setup a different subnet Jul 10 23:03:58 nite Jul 11 00:02:06 hmm. i can't seem to find an ftp server via ipkg Jul 11 00:02:07 any suggestions? Jul 11 01:08:54 for what firmware? Jul 11 02:05:46 Anyone here installed NFS on the NSLU2? I'm having a permissions problem and not sure how to resolve it.
