**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Wed Jul 12 02:59:57 2006 Jul 12 03:33:59 good night here, anyone around? Jul 12 03:37:20 I'm looking forward to unsling my NSLU2, but I already have my WD myBook almost full of random stuff, that won't fit anywhere else here, what would be my best bet on an "al cheapo" USB memory key? Jul 12 03:41:04 given that no one seems to be alive now I would let my questions here, hoping someone would answer and I would check back soon Jul 12 03:41:29 Can I Unsling to and already formated NTFS drive?? Jul 12 03:42:18 Is it a good idea to use an USB flash key for unslinging? Jul 12 03:43:10 How big it should be it if I plan to use the NSLU2 as the home mail, blog, web server?? Jul 12 03:43:43 would you recommend any particular model/make for the USB flash drive?? Jul 12 03:44:09 Thanks in advance to whomever answers my questions Jul 12 04:00:38 alex_mayorga, i would not recommend unsling to an already formatted NTFS drive Jul 12 04:01:40 use the NTFS drive for storage probably is ok Jul 12 04:02:36 eno-away: thanks, what would be your saying about the USD key? Jul 12 04:02:37 get a USB flash drive > 512M, or get another HD Jul 12 04:03:07 is flash slower than a drive? Jul 12 04:03:36 i did not notice much difference when i tried a couple of month ago Jul 12 04:04:26 the only thing about flash drive is that it's not a good idea to use it for swap Jul 12 04:04:30 eno: so you would say that a USB key on port 2 and my NTFS HD on port 1 would be the way to go? Jul 12 04:04:55 eno: can you elaborate on the swap part? Jul 12 04:05:27 flash drive has limited # of read/write for its lifetime Jul 12 04:05:39 IC Jul 12 04:05:44 swap read/write a lot Jul 12 04:05:57 so if you can resize the NTFS drive a bit Jul 12 04:06:12 of course, the most straightforward way is to get another HD Jul 12 04:06:32 flash has the advantage of quietness though Jul 12 04:07:04 I'm basically looking for the cheapest I can go to move this project along Jul 12 04:07:36 eno: you mean I can resize my NTFS drive and unslung to it? Jul 12 04:07:44 there're occasionally some deals i see that has 160G HD for $40 Jul 12 04:08:27 google "resize NTFS" Jul 12 04:08:51 would this one work http://www.seagate.com/products/retail/pocket/ ?? Jul 12 04:09:43 it should, and it's HD, probably not flash Jul 12 04:10:10 better send email to group ask around, see if any1 used it on slug before Jul 12 04:10:58 eno: I've basically mailed my questions above, I would wait a little and see what comes along Jul 12 04:11:14 so basically theres no "safe unsling to NTFS"? Jul 12 04:11:51 i unslung before NTFS was supported, so i don't have personal experience with NTFS Jul 12 04:13:12 i have a seagate microdrive i use in my camera, it's actually slower than fast compact flash Jul 12 04:13:19 eno: thanks on your time/patience Jul 12 04:13:41 no problem, good luck on your slug adventure Jul 12 04:13:53 You can only unsling to a disk natively formatted by the NSLU2 itself; FAT and NTFS cannot be unslung to (actually, the NSLU2 firmware cannot use all its capabilities if you do not have at least one natively-formatted disk!) Jul 12 04:16:21 mwester: thanks on confirming that, can you see my questions above? what would be your take? Jul 12 04:21:38 It's been generally confirmed that the Linksys-provided NTFS driver is unstable; I don't recommend using that. Commit to the NSLU2 and reformat it natively, or connect it to your PC; I just cannot imagine that you will be happy with a system that locks up or crashes randomly. Jul 12 04:22:04 As for flash devices - 512MB or bigger is fine for most folks. Jul 12 04:22:22 You cannot swap on it (the wiki can help you turn that off). Jul 12 04:22:50 Performance varies; google to find faster ones. Generally not a big issue though. Jul 12 04:23:39 Avoid flash devices with odd features (like fingerprint readers, and security stuff) and they should be compatible. I see 512MB units on sale for $24.99 often; these cheapo ones will work ok. Jul 12 04:24:49 thank you so much on clearing thigs out for me Jul 12 04:25:07 you may not need swap; it's hard to tell. If you need it, and you don't have it, something dies. Bad thing to have happen. You can't really swap to the NTFS disk, nor to the flash (unless you want to risk wearing it out in a matter of months (or even less)). So if you need a reliable unit, you're back to having a native disk device of some sort. Jul 12 04:25:42 No problem -- the wiki can be confusing because there are often too many choices and too many ways of doing the same thing. Jul 12 04:25:48 Good luck! Jul 12 04:27:02 so the safest bet would be pulling an old HD from some unsuspecting neighboor PC right? ;) Jul 12 04:28:22 :-D Oh yes! My development NSLU2 is running with a cheapo USB-IDE enclosure, and a 12GB hard drive "borrowed" from an old P-III that my sister-in-law was throwing in the trash. Jul 12 04:29:17 so it really doesn't matter how big the Unsling drive is right? Jul 12 04:31:19 512MB or larger to be sure that it will work is all that Unslung requires for either a flash or a disk. Some folks have had success with a 256MB flash device, but it seems to depend (I surmise that they are so very close to the limit that some work and some don't depending on the geometry that the device reports.) Jul 12 04:33:50 but that drive would work ONLY as optware packages? or can it be used to actually store stuff? Jul 12 04:37:18 The drive is used for both storage and the Unslung/optware software. The base install of Unslung takes a little more than 50MB of space. Jul 12 04:42:40 can you tell a 2.5 / 3.5 enclosure that surely works with NSLU2? Jul 12 04:48:42 i've had good experience with vantec nexstar, both 2.5 and 3.5" Jul 12 04:48:52 I'm seriously considering this one http://www.macally.com/spec/usb/storage_device/enclosure25.html Jul 12 04:52:43 looks like someone had a bad experience with it http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nslu2-general/database?query=macally&submit=Search&method=reportRows&tbl=1 Jul 12 04:53:12 time to go catch some sleep, I would be wandering around again latter Jul 12 04:53:16 thanks everyone Jul 12 11:30:55 wow lot of updates for unslung 6.8 Jul 12 11:32:21 to bad you can not see what is fixed Jul 12 11:32:32 or is there a web page to see that ? Jul 12 13:19:15 is it true usb-ide doesn't provide S.M.A.R.T.? or is it just linux limitation atm? Jul 12 14:22:36 14(drif14): True. Jul 12 16:54:24 l0c4lh0st: which? Jul 12 16:54:51 l0c4lh0st: because certain WD drive reports its S.M.A.R.T. status via USB... Jul 12 17:33:15 What port on my router is for ping accept ? Jul 12 17:48:18 ping has no port Jul 12 17:48:36 you need to allow icmp protocol Jul 12 18:02:59 does the intel open source ixp400_eth actually use the offload capablities of the NPE's Jul 12 18:03:00 ? Jul 12 18:05:13 icmp is that to forward in a linksys wag54 ? **** ENDING LOGGING AT Thu Jul 13 02:59:56 2006
