**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Mon Aug 21 02:59:57 2006 **** BEGIN LOGGING AT Mon Aug 21 07:30:42 2006 Aug 21 09:38:15 Hi. I'm in the process of unslinging my NSLU2. I'm at the point where I should run /sbin/unsling disk1 but a small detail in the web interface is worrying me. On the main page it says "USB Port 1: Ready, 6MB (3% Free)" I have a 250GB hdd attached to port 1 with about 2GB of data on it, so those numbers can't be correct. Aug 21 09:39:00 Disk 1 status is Formatted (EXT3) in Administration -> Advanced -> Disk Aug 21 09:39:28 Is it OK to continue, or have I done anything wrong? Aug 21 09:44:45 I'm trying the Scandisk tip on http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/TroubleshootADriveMissingCondition Aug 21 09:47:06 That didn't work... I got "No scan performed" Aug 21 09:48:53 Is the telnet password the only reason for unplugging the disk before booting and then hotplugging it when loged in in telnet? Aug 21 10:04:39 my slug hardly ever displays the correct disk and usage sizes in the web interface, and i don't care much. i rely on busybox and /bin/df to tell me the correct values Aug 21 10:07:11 Thing is I can't even browse the content of the harddrive Aug 21 10:08:03 When I looked in /share/hdd/data it was empty Aug 21 10:10:10 Tobbe, if you jsut formatted it, it has to be empty Aug 21 10:10:47 I didn't just format it, it has a few movies on it Aug 21 10:11:35 ah. wasn't the disk supposed to be formatted before unslinging to it? Aug 21 10:13:34 Well, it is formated, but after the format I put stuff on it Aug 21 10:17:12 Tobbe, I mean ,formatted with the SLUG web interface. have to find the instructions I followed for mine Aug 21 10:18:37 I let the setup format my drive when I first got my NSLU2 Aug 21 10:19:05 so it is a ext3 formated disk with all the right folders and files on it that the nslu2 needs Aug 21 10:19:14 ok. Aug 21 10:19:50 so I guess the reading on the web interface could refer to a specific partition on the disk Aug 21 10:21:17 about your data: what's in /share/flash/data ? Aug 21 10:21:23 yes, I guess it could Aug 21 10:21:43 hold on, I'll check Aug 21 10:25:19 Just to let you know, I now rebooted the slug with the disk plugged in. The web interface now says: "USB Port 1: Ready, 234560MB (99% Free)" Aug 21 10:27:05 and telneting in now shows the data in /share/hdd/data/public Aug 21 10:27:17 and /share/flash/data is ofcourse empty Aug 21 10:30:36 seems fine then Aug 21 10:31:29 yes, but I'm not sure if I can unslung from this point as I didn't have the hdd unplugged during boot as it says like five times in the readme that you should... Aug 21 10:32:28 so you haven't yet unslung then Aug 21 10:33:16 no, I was just about to issue /sbin/unsling disk1 when I noticed that I couldn't access the data on the disk Aug 21 10:33:17 but you're able telnet? then you should be able to unslung also Aug 21 10:33:24 +to Aug 21 10:33:54 unsling I mean Aug 21 10:34:39 so the telnet password is the only reason for unplugging the hdd before boot? Aug 21 11:20:57 yes Tobbe thats how i understand it Aug 21 11:22:14 how sure are you? Aug 21 11:24:10 if you have confirmed redboot access, then really, what's the worst thing that can happen? Aug 21 11:27:55 * giallu unslinged w/o previous check of redboot :) Aug 21 12:15:34 Just to let you all know. I manualy mounted /dev/sdb1 to /share/hdd/data and /dev/sdb2 to /share/hdd/conf and that made the web interface report the right stuff, and I could also browse my files again. So now I have a fully unslung nlsu2 :) Aug 21 19:18:18 cvs log make/php.mk Aug 21 19:24:17 Hello All, I need some help to download Openslug binary image from standard mirror an a dialup connection. Am I posting on the right channel ? Aug 21 20:42:09 Hi, how do I install irssi on my unslung nlsu2? Aug 21 20:42:31 tried ipkg install irssi? (I don't actually know if that works, but worth a try) Aug 21 20:42:51 I've installed openssh, nano and screen using ipkg packages, but I couldn't find any irssi ipkg packages Aug 21 20:43:28 RaYmAn-Bx: That returns Cannot find package irssi. Aug 21 20:44:13 hi tobbe Aug 21 20:44:19 Hi again :) Aug 21 20:44:22 ipkg doesn't provide irssi Aug 21 20:44:29 yeah, I noticed Aug 21 20:45:08 so what are my options to get it? Aug 21 20:47:27 you could try compiling it yourself Aug 21 20:47:36 or google and see if someone has already done it Aug 21 20:48:00 or use debianSlug :) Aug 21 20:48:37 drif was kind enough to give the compiled executable to me :) Aug 21 20:59:31 use debianslug ;-) Aug 21 20:59:42 it rocks Aug 21 20:59:54 hey drif Aug 21 21:00:21 barnseenio: Maybe later, I just bought the slug a few days ago :) Aug 21 21:00:33 aha, me too Aug 21 21:00:48 although i went debianslug cos unslung didnt work with my usb drive Aug 21 21:00:52 but im glad i did Aug 21 21:01:07 its just so versatile Aug 21 21:01:25 ive got tons of stuff set up on it, and it runs sweet Aug 21 21:02:44 although i did try torrentflux Aug 21 21:02:48 and that broke its back Aug 21 21:03:04 php + python + mysql + apache == dead slug Aug 21 21:03:24 yeah, it needs more ram for stuff like that Aug 21 21:03:31 ye python was eating it Aug 21 21:03:42 although rtorrent is good Aug 21 21:03:57 with how many torrents? Aug 21 21:04:10 usually i have 2 or 3 going Aug 21 21:04:43 but problem is on 0.6.0 rtorrent has some memory faults, so its not so good with large (dvd size) torrents, but < 1gb ive never had a problem with Aug 21 21:04:53 compiling the 6.1 source is a pain Aug 21 21:05:17 it's not uncommon for me to have 10+ torrents, so I don't even think I'll try :) Aug 21 21:05:53 well i used to, but im into this slow burn effect of the slug, just line them all up and if it takes a day or so extra .. who cares ;-) Aug 21 21:07:12 are you kidding? If you're a day late with the torrent you'll kill your ratio! Aug 21 21:07:13 and i decided that now ive got slug + xbox combo, i'll probly stick to xvid/divx releases so hopefully wont need the 4gb stuff Aug 21 21:07:51 oh, well i use a closed group. im fortunate i can leech what i like without care for ratio Aug 21 21:08:10 im looking forward to not burning dvds all the time Aug 21 21:08:58 doing my bit for the environment! Aug 21 21:09:49 hehe, now with the extra storage my slug + new usb hdd gives me I hope I've got the space to keep a few more dvd isos on the harddrive so I don't have to burn them :) Aug 21 21:10:04 lol ye Aug 21 21:10:09 how much disk did you go for? Aug 21 21:10:57 250 for now Aug 21 21:11:02 k Aug 21 21:11:09 that'll be full in 3 months! Aug 21 21:11:12 I'll add another 250 if I need it :) Aug 21 21:11:18 yeah, probably :) Aug 21 21:11:25 i went for 400 Aug 21 21:11:39 was really cheap Aug 21 21:12:16 I heard it was safest too stay at <= 250GB for a single drive Aug 21 21:12:24 oh? Aug 21 21:12:29 whys that Aug 21 21:12:50 you'll only lose a 1/4 gig when it fails? ;) Aug 21 21:12:56 lol Aug 21 21:13:00 ehh, 1/4 ter Aug 21 21:13:01 :) Aug 21 21:13:24 ye, i dont want to think about fail Aug 21 21:13:30 after the last week or so of setup i did Aug 21 21:13:38 i have it just how i want it Aug 21 21:13:45 so its probably due to break Aug 21 21:14:13 drives are made to fail...I just got one 250gb lacie back from service...the THIRD time, and it was broken when I got back home with it. same thing happened the previous time, was broken from service Aug 21 21:14:22 ouch Aug 21 21:14:23 pieces of shite they are, consumer drives Aug 21 21:14:42 are you unslung to the usbhd? Aug 21 21:14:56 well, I've a 400GB western digital on it now Aug 21 21:14:57 joga: don't even get me started on lacie drives! Aug 21 21:15:09 and have you tweaked spindown? Aug 21 21:15:19 no, it seems to spin down ok Aug 21 21:15:23 mine seems to be pretty much constantly spinning Aug 21 21:15:51 My WD MyBook spinned down before, but now that I have unslung to it it doesn't anymore Aug 21 21:16:03 are you writing logs there or something? Aug 21 21:16:11 or other constant access Aug 21 21:16:16 (that can't be cached) Aug 21 21:16:16 well, yes ;-) Aug 21 21:16:35 mm Aug 21 21:16:42 well, im not so sure if its disk access atb Aug 21 21:16:43 tbh Aug 21 21:16:58 WD drives seem not to be like they used to... Aug 21 21:17:02 when WD meant quality Aug 21 21:17:41 well, this one has worked ok for now, though the first one I got had a bad sector in it so I took it back to the store Aug 21 21:17:50 always run badblocks when you get a new drive, heh Aug 21 21:18:47 now I only get noisy (scratchy seeks) drives - and it took four drives (two bought, two times straight from the factory) to get a individual which didn't make such a horrible noise I could even consider replacing my DVB-C box's Aug 21 21:19:14 +with Aug 21 21:19:36 I'd just like a 10MB+ connection to put a fileserver on Aug 21 21:19:59 a few hot swappable drives with raid Aug 21 21:20:07 ask santa Aug 21 21:20:44 well, a friend has such a server (or will get one), but the bandwidth is hard to get Aug 21 21:20:50 mm Aug 21 21:20:56 I could buy a disk and put it on his server then Aug 21 21:21:00 i rent a fbsd server Aug 21 21:21:08 has good bw, and 100gb disk Aug 21 21:21:18 but costs 50USD a month Aug 21 21:21:24 ouch Aug 21 21:21:39 yes sucks, but we do get roughly enough in donations to cover it Aug 21 21:21:41 when I used to live in a dorm I had 10mb/10mb for 33 euros/month Aug 21 21:22:03 mm yes, this probly isnt the cheapest, but has good service, and the features we wanted Aug 21 21:22:17 good service is usually worth the money.. Aug 21 21:22:24 yeah lol Aug 21 21:23:02 I just recently had a dispute with some company about registering a domain, turned out the company was run by some spammer and they really weren't at all qualified Aug 21 21:23:15 ugg Aug 21 21:23:29 net disputes suck Aug 21 21:23:32 so I paid them less and filed a complaint Aug 21 21:24:19 but no answer yet, also I asked them to send the agreement terms to me on paper over a month ago, but no answer Aug 21 21:24:33 sound like 'fly by nights' Aug 21 21:24:36 if you happen to live in finland, don't deal with www.osoite.com :) Aug 21 21:24:42 lol, im .uk Aug 21 21:24:54 they rent their nameservers from uk at least Aug 21 21:25:18 problem is everyone who can setup a reseller account thinks theyre an isp Aug 21 21:25:36 ah, fellow finn on this channel :P always a pleasant surprise Aug 21 21:25:46 sites can often looks proffesional Aug 21 21:25:48 the reason I even got to deal with them was that their site had an offer for cheap domains + 1 year of web hosting for 1 euro Aug 21 21:26:04 hah nice price Aug 21 21:26:19 so I just quickly registered a domain and from the first email I realized it was either a scam or run by idiots Aug 21 21:26:57 for example, to change my password I would either need to buy a "control panel" service for X euros / month, OR send my chosen password BY EMAIL to them and ask them to change it Aug 21 21:26:58 and all you have paid was 1 euro? Aug 21 21:27:06 I paid 45 euros for a .fi domain Aug 21 21:27:25 and since ficora sells them for 52 euros, they didn't make any profit with it Aug 21 21:27:39 I didn't pay the 1 euro because their service was so full of shit Aug 21 21:27:48 .uk domains were 10£ for one year Aug 21 21:27:58 .fi is 52 euros for three years Aug 21 21:28:08 anyone get a .eu? Aug 21 21:28:11 and that's for 3 years? Aug 21 21:28:18 hi sluggers, some documentation says I have to add 'modprobe usbhid' to startup scripts... where should I add it? Aug 21 21:28:22 all the ones i wanted seem taken already! Aug 21 21:28:44 dont know it jelle Aug 21 21:29:03 :( Aug 21 21:29:13 I got the one I wanted, only 5 letters heh. too bad my isp won't give me a reverse dns entry since running a server is 'prohibited' Aug 21 21:29:37 a .eu ? Aug 21 21:29:38 under /unslung/ into proper rc.* -file Aug 21 21:29:53 barnseenio, .fi I mean, the one I registered Aug 21 21:30:01 ahk Aug 21 21:30:53 thanks drif, but I'm running openslug Aug 21 21:30:53 well, i must go to bed - an early start for me tomorrow Aug 21 21:31:07 debianslug ftw! Aug 21 21:32:20 jelle: ah, sorry then Aug 21 21:32:44 jelle: next time mention the configuration ok? ;) Aug 21 21:33:36 sure. thanks anyway :) Aug 21 21:36:53 I think I found it: I put a script in /etc/init.d and made a symbolic link from the etc/rcxx directory to it. Aug 21 21:36:59 all set I believe. Aug 21 21:37:15 sorry to have anchored your vivid discussion Aug 21 21:37:18 ;) Aug 21 21:38:37 (we aren't even talking to you no more) Aug 21 21:39:12 sorry. I'll let you talk, see you next time. bye Aug 21 21:39:20 laters jelle :) Aug 21 21:39:32 :) Aug 21 22:54:28 I get "Irssi: Invalid charset: ISO8859-1" all the time in irssi on my slug. Using unslung 6.8 firmware Aug 21 23:54:35 I´m trying to follow this guide: http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/SlugAsAudioPlayer Aug 21 23:55:57 but when I get to the part of installing alsa packages I get error message that ipgk can´t find the alsa packages Aug 21 23:59:43 hate beeing a noob Aug 22 00:00:03 =) Aug 22 00:08:40 hey, is there anyway to get nslookup on my slug Aug 22 00:47:19 CUBS# webalizer Aug 22 00:47:19 webalizer: error while loading shared libraries: libexpat.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Aug 22 00:47:19 CUBS# Aug 22 00:47:26 why do I get that Aug 22 00:55:20 maybe you lack libexpat? ;) Aug 22 00:59:52 how could I get it Aug 22 02:37:19 does the nslu2 revert to the default 192.168.1.77 static ip address when it is in upgrade mode? Aug 22 02:46:24 not sure Aug 22 02:46:40 do you have the linksys firmware still on it? Aug 22 02:47:15 well, i do Aug 22 02:47:20 i mean, sorry i don't Aug 22 02:47:23 i flashed openslug to it Aug 22 02:47:25 some time ago Aug 22 02:47:57 but never "used it" - then i moved - then i finally bought a hard-drive and external enclosure, then i plugged it back in Aug 22 02:48:00 then I'm pretty sure it wont Aug 22 02:48:22 its no big deal if it does really Aug 22 02:48:27 you can change it back Aug 22 02:48:29 now, i can't find it on my network - i tried to find it with nmap Aug 22 02:48:45 but i can't seem to find the slug so i can reflash it Aug 22 02:49:02 should show up in your dhcp client table on your router Aug 22 02:50:29 hmmm, i'm using openWrt and 'cat /tmp/dhcp.leases' only gives me my desktop Aug 22 02:51:06 it is possible that i configured it to use static IP before i put it away, but i can't be sure :-\ Aug 22 02:51:07 looking at that table is the way I would go Aug 22 02:54:16 do you mean the dhcp client table on the openWrt web interface? Aug 22 02:59:53 it is not showing up there either **** ENDING LOGGING AT Tue Aug 22 02:59:56 2006
