**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Fri Feb 02 02:59:59 2007 **** BEGIN LOGGING AT Fri Feb 02 08:03:59 2007 Feb 02 10:13:17 hi Feb 02 10:13:51 if i have a hd connected with two ntfs and one ext2 partition, how can i check which device the ext2 is ? Feb 02 11:06:48 is there any possibility to change /etc/fstab on unslung? Feb 02 11:09:50 yay, I just unslung a NSLU2 with a 250Gb drive after getting the drive only showing 6Mb (the large drive problem reported in the FAQ) Feb 02 11:13:31 someone please tell me how to edit fstab, cant find anything on the net :( Feb 02 11:14:33 rexthedog, what do you want to achieve with the fstab change? Feb 02 11:15:04 mount another partition that is on my hd Feb 02 11:15:09 an ext2 partition Feb 02 11:15:59 it looks like a standard linux mtab to me, are you working on a linux workstation? Feb 02 11:16:14 yeah Feb 02 11:16:15 i tried to edit it Feb 02 11:16:18 but when i reboot Feb 02 11:16:32 its overwritten by an old version Feb 02 11:16:51 nasty Feb 02 11:17:12 I was just reading something similar about the /etc/passwd file Feb 02 11:17:37 maybe look for references about /etc/passwd and see how it is that the file get overwritten. Feb 02 11:22:42 having a quick look around, there seems to be another fstab under /initrd/etc Feb 02 12:20:50 when i install samba on unslung, what happens with the firmware-internal samba? Feb 02 13:57:11 rexthedog: I'm not sure, but it might just tell you it is already installed. or it will replace it. Feb 02 13:57:26 what does "ipkg list_installed" tell you? Feb 02 13:57:48 or, wait, is it ipkg on unslung? I've been using openslug for too logn Feb 02 15:21:19 does anyone know why the shares HDD_1_1_1 and HDD_1_1_2 in the linksys webinterface are created new over and over? i have about 20 of them in the webinterface (and in /etc/samba/user_smb.conf). Feb 02 15:25:04 me to dude! when u try and remove em it brings up an error saying no ext3 drive connected yadda yadda shares disabled or sometihng Feb 02 15:25:22 but in Samba u only see the drives that are actually connected which is nice! Feb 02 15:25:28 but in ftp u see all of em >.< Feb 02 15:26:39 if u remove em from the .conf rex are they removed from the web interface? Feb 02 15:27:10 nope Feb 02 15:27:12 but the wierd is Feb 02 15:27:25 if i remove all the sahres in the conf Feb 02 15:27:29 they are not removed in the webinterface Feb 02 15:27:41 so something else is storing them Feb 02 15:27:56 ull prolly need 2 ask 1 of the big wigs in here - hella smart ppl Feb 02 15:28:14 yeah will have to wait until the return ;) Feb 02 15:28:57 when u find out could u lemme know!!! Feb 02 15:34:22 rm /etc/win_share.info and reboot. Make sure you reboot and shutdown using either the Web GUI, or the "DO_Shutdown" command, don't type "halt" or just pull the power cord. Feb 02 15:39:06 mwester saves the day!!....again! Feb 02 15:50:29 mwester, is there any way to change /etc/fstab ? any time i change it and my nslu2 restarts, it copys the old one before i modified id Feb 02 15:50:30 it Feb 02 15:52:51 rexthedog: no good way. Write a startup script in /opt/etc/init.d that performs the necessary mounts. Feb 02 15:53:14 yea thats what i did so far Feb 02 15:53:20 thanks Feb 02 15:53:51 The problem is the Linksys utilities; they will manage the fstab dynamically and will overwrite whatever you do (and not just at startup, sometimes just plugging/unplugging an unrelated device will rewrite the fstab) Feb 02 15:54:04 argh Feb 02 15:54:34 Usually when you find yourself totally frustrated by the Linksys firmware, it is a sign that it is time to move on to OpenSlug instead :) Feb 02 15:56:11 well i tried installing debian Feb 02 15:56:29 and gave up after the installation crashed the 4th time or sth like that... Feb 02 15:58:00 * mwester looks around to see if anyone is listening... Feb 02 15:58:56 With all due respect to the debian folks -- OpenSlug is about 1,000% better in terms of reliability and recoverability. Feb 02 15:59:27 :) Feb 02 15:59:28 no Feb 02 15:59:42 dont tell me if i will swith to openslug now i will not have any problems? Feb 02 15:59:53 also not mounting a ntfs drive that i want to use permissions with? Feb 02 16:00:34 rex :) hi Feb 02 16:00:46 hi Feb 02 16:00:55 Oh, you'll have plenty of problems -- but they can be resolved in the normal Linux fashion using normal Linux documentation. The biggest limitation currently is the lack of a good NTFS driver. But then the Linksys NTFS driver sucks, too. Feb 02 16:01:09 true Feb 02 16:01:30 thats why i just gave a f*ck and created a 20gig ext2 partition on my external hd Feb 02 18:38:32 anyone running gentoo on their slug from an nfs root? Feb 02 18:47:38 is anyone even active? Feb 02 18:50:53 erm, no and sometimes Feb 02 18:51:29 heh, do you know anything about loading root from nfs? Feb 02 18:51:46 sorry, no i'm not linux wiz... just another noob Feb 02 18:51:52 no worries Feb 02 18:52:04 I just need to figure out a way to see where the boot process is hanging :/ Feb 02 18:52:38 ahh that's definatley all hocus pocus to me. just happy to have got unslung on my slugs :) Feb 02 18:52:45 hehe Feb 02 18:53:50 I had my slug running from nfs for a while, that was openslug and I just used the turnup tool to get everything configured right Feb 02 18:54:49 yeah, I can run from an openslug created nfs root (turnup -i nfs) but I'm trying to get it to use a gentoo based nfs root now, and it appears to hang :/ Feb 02 18:55:00 to me turnup is just another vegetable... erm, technically a tuber or root? Feb 02 18:56:00 sorry, haven't tried gentoo on the slug yet... Feb 02 18:57:00 I can "run" gentoo on there (by chrooting into the nfs root), emerge and everything works, but when I reboot it hangs :/ Feb 02 18:57:07 oh well, time for some detective work Feb 02 18:57:58 or for soldering a serial cable? Feb 02 18:58:08 heh, I hope not Feb 02 18:58:16 but it would probably be easier Feb 02 19:08:17 warlord0: that's "turnip" I think - but now that you mention it, I'm not sure which it is (root or tuber) either... Feb 02 19:08:26 :D Feb 02 19:09:21 heh Feb 02 19:10:43 bit-wise: early-init issues usually need a console. You might like to try netconsole if you can't do the serial port. Another technique I've used (and will be part of the next Unslung release) is to use the "nc" (aka netcat) utility to send diag messages via network at various points in your startup scripts. Feb 02 19:11:12 I saw the netconsole, it looks like it requires re-compiling the kernel? Feb 02 19:11:55 Should be available via kernel module, perhaps? (It's built-in last time I checked in the next release). Feb 02 19:12:14 ah, interesting Feb 02 19:13:04 Do you have the ability to build from source? Feb 02 19:13:11 the kernel? Feb 02 19:13:21 what all is needed? Feb 02 19:13:46 I was compiling stuff earlier (dropbear, syslog-ng etc) in the chrooted gentoo environment, so probably Feb 02 19:17:44 The full OE build environment is what I meant -- just wondering if you really wanted to spend the effort on the older OpenSlug, or if it would be easier to just grab the most recent version from the monotone HEAD. It's pretty close to a release, and fairly stable (although *somebody* broke it the other day ;)) Feb 02 19:18:28 I'm flexible either way, but if it would be easier to grab the more recent ver I'd do that Feb 02 19:18:46 right now I'm going to go back through the steps of setting up the gentoo env, and see what happens Feb 02 19:18:52 if that fails I'll weigh my options Feb 02 19:19:09 (a quick stop to radio shack might be in order) Feb 02 19:31:52 hi, I have debian installed on my nslu2 and was wondering what options I would have for storing encrypted backups. Any recommendations? Feb 02 21:52:44 ooo, netconsole is pretty sweet Feb 02 22:03:05 alas, it appears netconsole doesn't come up soon enough, my poor slug dies before that :( **** ENDING LOGGING AT Sat Feb 03 02:59:59 2007
