**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Sat Apr 14 02:59:57 2007 Apr 14 11:05:39 anyone in here? Apr 14 17:36:13 caplink811 :) Apr 14 19:13:35 hello anyone help a guy with a possibly bricked nslu2? Apr 14 19:14:20 just describe your problem and stay online for a while... Apr 14 19:14:47 can i copy and paste a forum post i just made? its long buts its detailed and shows the issue Apr 14 19:15:38 I have a nslu2 and a 500gb hard drvie. I had them working well with samba and xbmc and decided to install the unsling firmware so i could take advantage of twonky for my mp101. This is where it starts to go wrong :-( .... Apr 14 19:15:38 I installed the lastest firmware and followed the tutorial on www.howtotwonky. I got the telnet on accessed the root and entered the ls -l share/hdd/ data string follwed by the /sbin/unsling disk1 command. Apr 14 19:15:38 But them i got lots of messages saying "cannot write "x" (x=file it was trying to write) file not found" or something to that effect.. all the way through the write process. At first i could still access the browswer setup but the disk drive wasnt detected at all, it said not installed. Now i cant even get that working. Am i right to assume that the nslu2 is trying to load from my hdd now and failing hence i cant access it? Is there anyway Apr 14 19:15:46 maybe that phpfi.com, or pastebin or something like that is a better option Apr 14 19:15:53 yikes sorry its long... Apr 14 19:16:21 any chance someone can take a look and see what they think... thanx guys Apr 14 19:22:06 wallace47, your disk is plugged to which port? Apr 14 19:22:40 either port it doesnt recognise it. but as i said i cant even get 192.168.1.77 to work now Apr 14 19:23:17 also if you starts your device without a hdd attached? Apr 14 19:24:25 if i start without the hdd attahced i still cant access the browser. although the status light is green and gives one beep as if it is ready Apr 14 19:26:46 assuming, that your workstation is in the 192.168.1.xx network segment?! Apr 14 19:27:46 yeah i had that problem first off and talked to tech support... i plugged the slug directly into the pc with the adaptor ip 192.168.1.78, default gateway the same as the slug Apr 14 19:28:22 and you use a crossover cable for that setup? Apr 14 19:28:50 no not a crossover a straight thru but it worked with that cable before i had the bad unsling Apr 14 19:30:21 k Apr 14 19:31:27 assuming my flash went well which it did... but the copying of the root files didnt.. can that brick my slug? Apr 14 19:32:09 basically, no. if it isn't possile to boot from th eexternal device, the slug boots from the flash Apr 14 19:33:04 so it overides the boot from hdd? so therfore mine should boot as normal... ill try via my router (effectively using a crossover) Apr 14 19:33:33 how can i sort the hdd out? i cant even format back to fat as partition magic says it cant access in boot mode Apr 14 19:34:34 maybe that you fill up your flash with the unsuccessful copy action Apr 14 19:37:05 what does that mean? Apr 14 19:37:40 theres no space left on the flash for it to do anything Apr 14 19:37:51 i cant use the router without changing the dynamic ip range to suit the slug (first off i changed the slug to match the netgear range) Apr 14 19:38:06 don't use part magic, or tools like this, just use the win data storage manger, delete the partitions, and make a new fat one Apr 14 19:38:30 win data manager? is that a download? Apr 14 19:39:11 i think my problems started as i started the copy over without the drive on and i got a count down... waiting for 120secs... i then realised and switched it on Apr 14 19:39:16 i think he means the windows tool Apr 14 19:39:17 dunno, how it is called in your language, it's an integrated prog ... Apr 14 19:39:30 Administrative Tools --> Computer Managment --> Disk Management Apr 14 19:39:37 Reedy_Boy, thx Apr 14 19:39:44 intergrated into windows? are you not english? you speak better than me! Apr 14 19:39:57 :) Apr 14 19:39:59 from germany Apr 14 19:40:08 thanx reedy boy Apr 14 19:40:09 Most germans speak pretty good english Apr 14 19:40:20 Wish my german was that good Apr 14 19:40:36 better than us cumbrians lol Apr 14 19:40:36 ill try the partition thing in windows. Apr 14 19:40:46 im yorkshire... so we cant say much Apr 14 19:40:57 brb guys :-) Apr 14 19:40:57 Yeah, just put the HD on, delete the partitions, and put a FAT one on Apr 14 19:43:17 wallace47, when you ran /sbin/unlsing disk1, at which port was your hdd located? Apr 14 19:43:24 port 1 Apr 14 19:43:44 thanx for the hdd tip :-) its formatting.... that £100 of £150 pounds saved lol Apr 14 19:44:19 which is best for the slug fat or ext3 or nfts? Apr 14 19:44:31 now just the slug to rescue :-) Apr 14 19:45:08 k, assuming, that you use unslung-6.8, then it should be disk2. ext3 natively formatted by the slug Apr 14 19:46:38 disk2? i had my usb drive in disk 1 Apr 14 19:46:45 according to http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/Unslung/UpgradingToUnslung6 (tables at the half of the page) Apr 14 19:47:44 just stick it as fat Apr 14 19:47:50 then use the slug to reformat to its natic Apr 14 19:48:27 i cant access the slug reedy boy... not sure why it status is ready but not responding to 192.168.1.77 Apr 14 19:48:49 what am i looking for captain? on the page? Apr 14 19:49:12 forgive me this is my first foray into nslu2/linux ... prbably my last lol Apr 14 19:50:15 usb port 1 -> /share/hdd/xxx -> /dev/sdbx -> disk2 Apr 14 19:50:46 i typed ls -l /share/hdd/data Apr 14 19:51:15 also /sbin unsling disk1 Apr 14 19:51:35 which should list the content of your disk plugged in usb port1 Apr 14 19:52:04 but unsling disk1 should result in an error Apr 14 19:52:33 first time i tried it did but i had to reformat (lost shit loadsa movies) did it again but forgot drive was off.. then got a countdown so switched drive on Apr 14 19:53:02 i did get lots of errors..."file not found etc..." should i have typed /sbin unsling disk2? Apr 14 19:54:03 Weird how linksys change the mappings like that Apr 14 19:54:09 well, so if you now starts with a clean new setup, it is recommend that you use port2 for your disk Apr 14 19:54:25 yeah, it is really crappy Apr 14 19:54:57 so i should use port 2? im lost already the guide said use port one lol... guys ill try and log into the slug via my router... will be back in 2 mins Apr 14 19:55:02 thanks for the help so far Apr 14 19:55:23 wallace47, but 1st, your nslu should be reachable/accessable... Apr 14 20:05:39 sorry got booted changing dynamic range on router Apr 14 20:06:19 i still cant reach the nslu green light is on and it beeps once but router doesnt show it as attached and cant get browser page up Apr 14 20:08:02 Is your router set to DHCP? Apr 14 20:08:31 It might be that the router is assigning it an address via dhcp, but not showing it in the clients list. Apr 14 20:09:08 yeah its dchp Apr 14 20:09:26 ill knock it off and try again Apr 14 20:17:10 nope still cant see it Apr 14 20:17:55 no it still cant see it :-( i have it linked directly into my laptop now Apr 14 20:22:35 wallace47, 1st, you could use a network scanner (e.g. superscan) to search for the nslu device, or 2nd you could reset the sysconfig (http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/ResetSysConf) and then reflash the firmware (http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/UseTheResetButtonToEnterUpgradeMode and http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/InstallUnslungFirmware) Apr 14 20:22:40 why is the status green if its bricked? it seems like its working fine but cant get to it Apr 14 20:22:57 it isn't bricked Apr 14 20:28:36 hey captain... superscan only shows my router and pc no nslu2 Apr 14 20:29:46 can you resend me the flash recovery message you sent me? the only thing is im sure the flash went well... just the copying of the root files hace messed things up Apr 14 20:30:08 wallace47, 1st, you could use a network scanner (e.g. superscan) to search for the nslu device, or 2nd you could reset the sysconfig (http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/ResetSysConf) and then reflash the firmware (http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/UseTheResetButtonToEnterUpgradeMode and http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/InstallUnslungFirmware) Apr 14 20:31:31 do i need to be running linux to do this? Apr 14 20:32:01 no, there is the sercomm tool (win) or upslug2 (linux) Apr 14 20:33:19 you could find the sercomm tool at e.g. www.jrbnet.de/texte/sc_uu.zip Apr 14 20:44:32 jeez thats complicated that accessing red boot! lol.. you think i should try linksys online help? Apr 14 20:44:50 Its not difficult Apr 14 20:44:53 Turn it off Apr 14 20:45:12 depress reset switch at back, turn on, wait for light to go solid red, release reset button, wait for light to flash Apr 14 20:46:02 i dont think i had a bad flash just messed up when copying the files to hdd Apr 14 20:46:10 wait till i go get it :-) Apr 14 20:49:03 my light isnt going red reedy Apr 14 20:51:03 when i depress reset i get a beep after a few secondsbut nothing more Apr 14 20:52:25 is that supposed to happen? Apr 14 20:52:34 doesnt seem to be reseting properly? Apr 14 20:55:05 you should switch the device off, push the reset button, hold it, switch the device on, depending on your hardware version, it maybe, that it isn't a red flashing led.. amber or something like that Apr 14 20:56:29 i got a solid amber light that time .. now its booting Apr 14 20:56:43 you think linksys online chat guys are an option? Apr 14 20:56:56 Not for help with unslung. Apr 14 20:57:10 this is my opinion, too Apr 14 20:57:18 i wont tell em bout unslung :-) just pretend i dont know what a firmware is :-) Apr 14 20:58:10 yeah, but those guys might be prefer the eraseall tool, which isn't realy recommended Apr 14 20:58:26 wally3792: caplink811-log knows more about the NSLU2 than most, IMO certainly more than the Linksys first-line techs. :) Apr 14 20:58:42 aua Apr 14 20:58:55 haha but at the moment to all intense and purposes i have a cute brick sitting next to me tho... Apr 14 21:03:25 amber lught is solid Apr 14 21:03:32 you cant always, but the tool should tell you if it is for definate Apr 14 21:03:34 should be ok Apr 14 21:03:39 green flashing Apr 14 21:03:53 stopped flashing green Apr 14 21:04:09 its like computer geek internet sex lol Apr 14 21:04:10 As long as its not like my unslung one which is dead to network under redboot... i had to get it serialised and reflashed via serial Apr 14 21:04:29 lol Apr 14 21:04:52 to me it just looks like its booting as normal even with the reset depresses Apr 14 21:05:21 ill d/l sercomm Apr 14 21:05:56 sercomm.com? Apr 14 21:17:45 yeah i can feel the little button depress (as a netgear user you must know im used to it lol) Apr 14 21:20:18 hehe Apr 14 21:20:22 i use the web admin Apr 14 21:21:57 so im screwed now? lol... seems ive running out of options... maybe pretend to ebuyer its never worked :-) Apr 14 21:22:12 you could do that, bit easier Apr 14 21:22:13 Errm Apr 14 21:22:21 You could be pressing the reset button for too long Apr 14 21:22:34 how long do i press it? Apr 14 21:23:28 wally3792, if the easy way wont work, then it is time for the hard way ... http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/TelnetIntoRedBoot Apr 14 21:23:28 to be honest it doesnt seem to alter anything in the startup of the unit still seems to take the same steps for the same amount of time Apr 14 21:23:29 till the light stays solid red/amber Apr 14 21:25:17 it stays solid amber wether i press the button or not Apr 14 21:25:43 Did you reset the conf area? Apr 14 21:25:49 no Apr 14 21:25:58 should i have done that first? Apr 14 21:26:01 no Apr 14 21:26:19 the amber light is solid as soon as it switches on Apr 14 21:26:37 doesnt make any difference wether i hold button or not Apr 14 21:29:19 try ping -t 192.168.1.77 whilst booting (in command prompt) Apr 14 21:29:22 see if oyu get any replies Apr 14 21:30:07 well guys thanks for all your help tonight... im not sure im up to the hard way might have to shaft ebuyer :-) im tried pinging i dont get any replies Apr 14 21:30:11 Do what caplink811 says. Apr 14 21:31:02 i would marry my mother if he told me it would fi my problem... i understand he knows everything bout the nslu2 lol but it looks too hard mike Apr 14 21:31:21 looks too hard? Apr 14 21:31:28 really, it isn't Apr 14 21:32:11 Its just long winded and looks hard Apr 14 21:32:17 wait till i load it up again (ps i used to be into computers when dos 5.0 was the bollocks so im not frightened of a bit of findling :-) Apr 14 21:32:33 typing lessons i need Apr 14 21:33:21 well, put your workstation in the 192.168.0.x segment, and try to get the redboot prompt, that's it Apr 14 21:33:33 basically Apr 14 21:33:53 I see thats been updated Apr 14 21:34:02 I used the tcl script before Apr 14 21:34:20 See there is a vbscript one :) Apr 14 21:34:57 one sec Apr 14 21:35:26 you mean change the ethernet to the 192.168.0.1 range? Apr 14 21:35:44 not 0.1 that is the nslu adress Apr 14 21:35:57 your pc to like 192.168.0.2 Apr 14 21:35:59 STATIC Apr 14 21:36:56 ok i can do that Apr 14 21:37:13 then switch on the nslu? Apr 14 21:37:25 follow the instructions Apr 14 21:37:28 lol Apr 14 21:37:52 its loads easier using one of the scripts Apr 14 21:37:57 seriously. if you keep trying to jump ahead, and try your own things not part of the procedure, it won't work. Apr 14 21:39:15 im sorry ive just read the instructions and it mentions when you get a ping reply? im not getting any replies? Apr 14 21:39:58 Do you understand the procedure, what it does, and why? Apr 14 21:40:21 also once i set my ip to static in the required range my net drops me so i cant ask advice (sorry for monopolising your time lads) Apr 14 21:41:14 mwester... my understanding reading through it is that ive to wait for a windows when the unit can be accessed then type a command to kinda hijak the boot sequence? Apr 14 21:41:24 and you set up your workstation to an ip adress like 192.168.0.2 (e.g), which is neccesary for a successful ping, and catch the redbot prompt as well Apr 14 21:42:14 i only have a straight thru cable will that do? Apr 14 21:42:36 sure, this is layer 1 Apr 14 21:42:38 if your pc is fairly modern, it should auto sense Apr 14 21:42:57 You can try, but it reduces the chances because it often takes a long time for the PC to autoswitch polarity. Apr 14 21:43:25 mwester was my understanding right about what im doing? Apr 14 21:43:53 yes. Apr 14 21:43:56 kewl Apr 14 21:44:17 right ill log my laptop off and put it next to my pc so i can still chat on here while i try.. be back in 5 Apr 14 21:44:42 secs, mins, hours? Apr 14 21:45:19 lol Apr 14 21:47:16 * caplink811-log heading to bed now, i'm a little bit sick at these days Apr 14 21:47:36 night caplink811-log! Apr 14 21:47:58 gn8 :) Apr 14 21:50:49 im back lol Apr 14 21:51:45 caplink811-log has gone ot bed Apr 14 21:52:03 no :-( Apr 14 21:52:14 then its me and you reedy lol... Apr 14 21:52:37 and mwester! Apr 14 21:53:52 why at 2.10? Apr 14 21:54:00 switch the ip of your laptop to something like 192.168.0.10 Apr 14 21:54:08 just first one i thought of... oh ok will do Apr 14 21:54:13 I think someone didn't follow the instructions. Apr 14 21:54:15 heh, yeah, wrong range Apr 14 21:55:00 sorry i though i was to avoid the 0 range (although ive switched my router to 1 range Apr 14 21:55:19 can someone send me the url again im on a dif computer :-P Apr 14 21:55:24 of? Apr 14 21:55:40 http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/TelnetIntoRedBoot Apr 14 21:55:51 Probably worth trying one of the scripts Apr 14 21:56:47 ok where do i get one? Apr 14 21:56:59 if you look down the page, they are there Apr 14 21:57:05 you just need to copy it to a file yourself Apr 14 21:57:37 wally4794, your responses are making me really wonder if you read the wiki article or not! The scripts are right there on the page. Apr 14 21:57:42 yeah i see it Apr 14 21:58:07 mwester is getting anoyed at me lol. Sorry dude ill buy ya a pint Apr 14 21:58:51 no pint necessary, just pay attention to the wiki. A lot of people worked on it over a long time, and it's worked ok for many. Just follow the instructions, and you, too, will have success. Apr 14 21:59:27 * caplink811-log thinking about another pint... Apr 14 22:09:05 i ran the batch file.... got loadsa ping timeouts.. 2 harware errors and then more timeouts... till the slug made its ready beep Apr 14 22:09:16 hardware Apr 14 22:09:34 did you get in via telnet in the end though? Apr 14 22:10:35 its still timeing out Apr 14 22:10:52 beep.. Apr 14 22:10:59 like the normal boot up beep? Apr 14 22:11:08 yeah Apr 14 22:11:44 thats all i had to do wasnt it? create the batch run it and switch it on when the first timeout apeared? Apr 14 22:13:01 i shouldve been taken to a telnet prompt automatically? Apr 14 22:13:50 i believe so Apr 14 22:13:53 which did oyu use? Apr 14 22:14:06 the batch script? Apr 14 22:14:38 an automatic windows method the batch file one not the .tcl one Apr 14 22:14:47 ya Apr 14 22:15:31 its done it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Apr 14 22:15:36 second time Apr 14 22:15:42 now what Apr 14 22:15:56 whats the tutorial say Apr 14 22:16:10 im on telnet.... sorry got excited there for a mo lol Apr 14 22:16:58 can i use the secomm now im in red boot? Apr 14 22:19:36 I think it is Apr 14 22:19:38 "You have two choices for accessing the Redboot command prompt: you can either connect over the network (see HowTo.TelnetIntoRedBoot) or you can use the serial port, if you have the necessary hardware (see HowTo.AddASerialPort). " Apr 14 22:21:29 im downloading the tftp now Apr 14 22:21:37 k Apr 14 22:34:46 following guide.... think its working so far have set up and tested tftp..# Apr 14 22:41:31 i get a timeout when i try to copy the .bin file :-( Apr 14 22:49:00 reedy.... when you execute the load command where is it actually loaded to? Apr 14 23:00:17 i can ping it now its in redboot mode i have set up solarwinds and test a transfer but i get timout when i try to transfer to nslu Apr 14 23:01:14 anyone? :-( Apr 14 23:08:17 can anyone help me... im stuck at the tftp part of a bad flash recovery? Apr 14 23:10:54 ah well thanks for all your help tonight guys esp caplink and reedy! peace Apr 15 00:03:22 Its been some time since I played around with my nslu2 now. But I think im gonna start up again, do i remember correct or is it wrong that there is just the unslug version that has the web interface.. ? Apr 15 00:06:26 xeor: yeah unslung comes with the linksys web interface for admin Apr 15 00:07:25 eno: yea, i know. But does the other versions have an posibility to have an web interface to? Is there any package or anything for that? Apr 15 00:07:56 ppl likes webmin, and request the package for optware Apr 15 00:08:08 at one point i actually tried it Apr 15 00:08:14 it's too slow Apr 15 00:08:21 on a turbo-slug Apr 15 00:08:35 usable, but slow Apr 15 00:08:43 hmm.. soo, only webmin Apr 15 00:08:49 * mwester_ tried it, too -- it works, if one is very patient, and doesn't expect to use the slug to do anything *except* run webmin. Apr 15 00:09:08 hehe Apr 15 00:10:12 I actually dont like web interfaces, but i think there whould be nice with some stats and maybe an page to browse files an such.. But as long as there is php on it i guess there is no problem.. :) Apr 15 00:10:31 Anyone tried mysql on it? Apr 15 00:10:36 Debian runs pretty well on my slug, and can host apache2 just fine. Apr 15 00:10:52 mysql runs. Apr 15 00:10:56 nice Apr 15 00:11:08 I guess it depends what you were doing with the db though. Apr 15 00:11:29 no doubt.. ;o Apr 15 00:11:31 By the time you put Apache, PHP, and mysql on the slug, it doesn't run very well anymore, though. Apr 15 00:12:05 hmm.. resources? Apr 15 00:12:23 See if suitable solution can be done using a lighter-weight web server, such as Cherokee. Apr 15 00:12:36 resources? I hope you're joking! Apr 15 00:13:44 Hmm, there's an idea mwester_ :) Apr 15 00:13:53 well, I havent used the slug for much, but an LAMP system surely is an resources hugger Apr 15 00:13:58 I might see if I can produce a cut-down list of packages not needed on the slug when debian is installed. Apr 15 00:14:24 266MHz ARM (when modified), with 32MB of RAM, and a USB-attached disk... :-) Care is the watch-word when picking applications and services. Apr 15 00:14:56 Also, if you are doing anything with images or audio, it has no floating point. That's a big limiter in package selection as well. Apr 15 00:15:02 mwester_, newer slugs come as 266 out of the box :-) Apr 15 00:15:09 (I had to modify mine though) Apr 15 00:15:27 ARM has no floating point? Apr 15 00:15:36 Not the chipset used in the NSLU2 Apr 15 00:15:45 wow, I didn't know that, Apr 15 00:16:52 Yeah, a bit of a problem for some codecs. There are some ARM devices with FP hardware, and I think maybe even some of them run optware packages. Apr 15 00:17:37 But I'm not sure if any of the optware packages available from the standard feeds require FP hardware. I think if you stick with the standard stuff, you'll be ok. **** ENDING LOGGING AT Sun Apr 15 02:59:56 2007
