**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Tue May 08 02:59:57 2007 May 08 03:00:00 can anyone help wtih raid setup using 6.8? May 08 03:00:41 i can not copy files into initrd/unslung directory May 08 03:28:22 Hi all May 08 03:28:50 I found the location of the Debian root password for the debian LSUG install once before, but I cannot find it now. May 08 03:29:07 I have been thrashing around on google but I could use a little help. May 08 03:50:13 can somebody help me out? I don't understand why my nslu2 is recognizing my usb enclosure as usb 1.0 speed instead of 2.0 May 08 12:33:41 hello - i am having a problem with crating a raid1 array - i am getting 'no space avialibe' when trying to copy file into initrd/unslung - can someone help please May 08 12:34:14 i am following the HowTo: Raid1onUnslung6 wiki page and get stuck on... May 08 12:34:16 Copy mdadm, md.o and raid1.o into /initrd/unslung. Ensure that the new mdadm file has execute permissions (i.e. chmod 755 /initrd/unslung/mdadm). You'll find md.o and raid1.o in the /lib/modules/2.4.22-xfs/kernel/drivers/md directory. May 08 13:04:32 moonpie: you'll have to make some space available by deleteing stuff you don't need. May 08 13:11:20 what does that mean - delete stuff you dont need - in initrd/unslung there is nothing to start with - I am somewhat new to linux and dont totally understand what initrd is or where it resides May 08 13:15:03 i btw i am using a newly flashed nslu2 so there is no extra stuff that i am aware of that can be deleted May 08 13:54:52 moonpie: making RAID work on Unslung is a steep learning curve for a new Linux user!! May 08 13:56:09 The initrd is the internal flash; it's the filesystem used early in the boot. It has very little empty space. In order to copy the raid drivers into that space, you have to remove some other data somewhere in the /initrd partition. May 08 13:56:52 If you don't know what you can safely delete there, you probably should hold off on setting up RAID until you gain a bit more experience with Linux and the peculiarities of Unslung. May 08 13:58:08 Is there a specific reason you are looking to install RAID - perhaps there's a better solution? (I gave up on RAID myself, it doesn't work well enough for my environment, so I do a disk-to-disk copy nightly instead) May 08 14:19:20 well i am a windows platfrom engineer and have 'played' with linux a litte. So I am not a computer newbie just a little new to linux. I understand what initrd is i just am not sure 1 - what to delete and 2 - how to get to it so i can modify it May 08 14:19:53 my reason for wanting raid is because i have data that can not be replicated that is saved May 08 14:25:43 Ok. The problem with the raid stuff is that resyncs take forever, and you have to resync at almost every reboot of the device. May 08 14:26:25 In order to get around that, IIRC the wiki suggests repartitioning the disk so that the system root is not on the mirrored partition. May 08 14:26:48 However doing that creates a partitioning scheme that the Linksys GUI and tools cannot understand. May 08 14:27:14 The practical result is that one ends up doing all the admin by hand because the GUI isn't useful for all the functions any longer. May 08 14:27:39 So, why not use SlugOS (aka "OpenSLUG") instead of Unslung in that case? May 08 14:28:16 The alternative selected by most who experimented with the raid drivers on Unslung is to set up a disk-to-disk copy to replicate the data using rsync. May 08 14:30:10 If you wish to pursue the raid stuff, however, the first step will be to get the drivers on the flash -- you'll have to figure out what you are willing to give up, and delete the associated binaries from the flash filesystem. May 08 14:30:41 yea this is supposedly addressed by the fact that we do repartion the dirves and have a veryt small bot partition May 08 14:30:44 There are some device drivers in the /initrd/lib/modules directory structure that are candidates. May 08 14:31:40 Right. but that leaves the Linksys firmware seeing only the very small boot partition as the entire available space; it has no visibility to the RAID partitions at all. May 08 14:32:01 So you end up unable to use the Linksys firmware to manage the partition and set up the shares. May 08 14:32:43 So why no go with a standard Linux firmware, like OpenSLUG -- much easier to get the RAID stuff working there, and it doesn't break the synced mirrors at every boot. May 08 14:37:02 correct and i am assuming that there isnt much maintence once it is setup May 08 14:37:54 well i woulnd mind that but that is wehre i am at a loss - if i had a mentor to help i wouldn mind trying debian May 08 14:38:36 but i am just smurt enough to follow directions and figure out a few things but major stuff i am just plain linux ignorant about May 08 14:40:16 installnig debian on nslu2 is straightforward. dont believe the scare stories on the wiki about it being for 'advanced' users only May 08 14:45:18 hi all May 08 14:46:21 moonpie, Installing debian on ARM is very easy if you follow all the standard howtos - the docs are well wriiteen and I am an advacned user and was abel to use things like LVM and a drive partitioned on another machine! May 08 14:47:00 If you followhte docs, once you get the unit flashed adnd rebooted you follow the standrad debian instlldocs - the install is the same - in fact install debian from scratch on a test amchien first so you now what to expect! May 08 14:48:25 hey, arm into nslu2 is arm or xscale ? Are there in http://www.nslu2-linux.org page for hardware specifications ? May 08 14:49:50 xscale. There are some very detailed pages on the wiki with much information on the NSLU2; the "info" pages would be where to start looking. May 08 14:50:30 mwester: thanks May 08 15:58:25 How much HDs is possible have inside to NSLU2 ? May 08 18:55:17 hello. i installed debian on a flash stick and i'm now trying to disable services. i'like to do this in a clean way. i think i dont need cron jobs for man-db for example. someone here with experience in that matter? May 08 20:42:46 ax954b, apt-get rcconf May 08 20:42:52 apt-get install rcconf May 08 22:08:02 How can I restart a debian install? I lost my nic it seems and cant mounthe LVM volumes on the rescue sytem - bad superblock on 4 of the 5 LVs ! May 08 22:08:15 One lv is fine and mounts great - the other 4 all give errors... May 08 22:08:52 restarting the nlsu2?? May 08 22:12:21 lol cross-posting on two irc channels May 08 22:16:44 didnt know if the issue was debian -arm secific or a general problem trying to get NIC working after losing it in software... May 08 22:16:53 thanks for the post inother channel! **** ENDING LOGGING AT Wed May 09 02:59:57 2007
