**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Thu Jul 05 02:59:56 2007 Jul 05 10:51:22 I'm installing Debian onto my SLUG. I've managed to put a dud initramfs onto it. What's the best way to load a fixed initramfs into the flash, given that I've got access to the HDD that Debian is installed onto. I've tried upslug2 -r but it just verifies the slug's firmware; upslug2 -r -k gives me some strange "file is too small or too large" error on the kernel file (odd that it can't Jul 05 10:51:22 tell me *which* way it's a problem). Any pointers? Jul 05 10:54:45 womble: use slugimage to unpack an existing di-nslu2.bin image. Then use slugimage to put it back together again with your kernel and initramfs. Jul 05 10:55:26 or just load the predefined image from Martin's site, log in, reinstall the kernel package, and re-run flash-kernel Jul 05 10:56:03 rwhitby: Both very good suggestions. Thanks. Jul 05 10:56:05 you can't use upslug2 -r or -k switches in Debian, due to the Apex bootloader being in there too. Jul 05 10:56:25 Apex sits in the kernel partition, which confuses upslug2 Jul 05 10:56:43 you can only really use the -i switch with debian stuff for upslug2. Jul 05 11:03:48 Aaah, that's what stuffed me up. Good to know. Jul 05 11:05:50 BTW, you're more likely to get Debian/NSLU2 help on the #debian-arm channel on irc.oftc.net Jul 05 11:06:08 ah, you're there already :-) Jul 05 11:07:56 Yes, after I asked I thought I'd best go and find other places to ask as well, in case everyone here was asleep. But then you answered and all was good. Jul 05 11:12:33 Hmm, my kernel is too big. That seems... suboptimal. Jul 05 11:12:42 Not to mention very confusing. Jul 05 11:13:28 Considering the stock one is *larger* than the one I'm trying to stuff in. Jul 05 11:17:45 that's why we use apex - it allows for a big kernel Jul 05 11:18:01 what's telling you your kernel is too big? Jul 05 11:21:53 slugimage Jul 05 11:22:50 I got the di-nslu2.bin, ran "slugimage -u -i di-nslu2.bin" then immediately "slugimage -p -o test-nslu2.bin" and got "Ran out of flash space in - 0x60000 bytes too large." Jul 05 11:23:07 slugimage is version 0.10+r71-12 Jul 05 11:23:11 Fresh from the repos Jul 05 11:23:33 yep, you need to pass slugimage -L apex Jul 05 11:23:53 so it knows you're using apex and can handle a larger kernel Jul 05 11:24:18 Hey, look at that! It works. Sweet. Jul 05 11:24:22 One more thing for the FAQ. Jul 05 11:24:28 Course it works - I wrote it! Jul 05 11:25:09 From today, the latest slugimage in SVN can handle an ObeseSlug (16MB Flash, 256MB Ram) Jul 05 11:25:51 Sounds like my friend's pug dog, "ObeseSlug". Jul 05 11:26:15 bigger than a FatSlug Jul 05 11:47:18 Anyone in the Sydney, Australia area have an NSLU2 serial cable they'd be willing to let me borrow? It'd save me having to make one... Jul 05 12:07:47 Hey rwhitby, I found a potential ambiguity on your NSLU2 serial port page: The wiki says that I want a 3v level converter, but your page talks about the AD232DBH which on compsys' website is the 5v version. Should your kit number be AD232DBH3V? Jul 05 12:23:42 probably Jul 05 12:24:09 womble: the easiest way is to get a phone usb data cable. See the nslu2-linux wiki for a list of ones that work. Jul 05 23:27:08 Any1 here used the nslu2 for "media" file server? I wonder what the normal nslu2 stock firmware can't do that ushare or twonky can? Jul 05 23:27:38 Basically, why would I want to go through the hassle of installing ushare or buy twonky.... Jul 05 23:28:29 leesiulung: normal linksys firmware has no upnp server Jul 05 23:28:47 rwithby: ohhhh.... Jul 05 23:29:07 if you install custom firmware, there are various open source upnp solutions available in optware and openembedded and Debian. Jul 05 23:29:20 rwithby: well I use unslung right now Jul 05 23:30:13 rwithby: so with unslung and ushare, I can get the streaming media feature. Correct? Jul 05 23:30:23 in that case, look at the Optware package set for your requirements. I don't use upnp myself, so I can't give any more details or recommendations than that. Jul 05 23:31:26 I see... I could have sworn the stock linksys firmware had something to share media.... Jul 05 23:33:46 maybe the latest version does. I'm not aware of it. Jul 05 23:35:07 rwithby: I will look into it. My experience with linksys software (firmware) is that is is buggy and unreliable.... Unslung seems to run great (although built on stock firmware) Jul 05 23:40:17 rwithby: according to the box "Share music, video, or data files with managed access by user name or group". So it looks like it only allows sharing of files, not streaming upnp stuff.... Jul 05 23:42:29 any1 else have experience with media server and upnp software? Jul 05 23:44:42 rwithby: last time I flashed my nslu2 with unslung. I have a second one, I consider flashing with unslung. But I forgot what the recommended method is, Web UI or during redboot? Jul 05 23:56:09 leesiulung: (it's rwhitby, not rwithby, BTW) - the recommended method is the reset button upgrade mode and upslug2 or sercomm upgrade tool. this is the case for *any* nslu2-linux firmware at any time. Jul 06 00:00:07 rwhitby: sorry, I copied and pasted your name every single time. I know what sercomm upgrade tool is, but what is the reset button upgrade mode (redboot?) and upslug2? Jul 06 00:00:36 leesiulung: please use the wiki to answer those questions Jul 06 00:02:14 rwithby: thanks. Jul 06 00:05:59 rwithby: one more question, that I have not found in the wiki. Is reseting the SysConf area the same as doing a hard reset using the reset button in the back of the unit? Jul 06 00:07:03 rwhitby: I messed up your name again.... I just noticed, you are a contributor to the wiki... Jul 06 00:08:09 leesiulung, tab completion works in most IRC clients for nicks :-) Jul 06 00:08:22 if you are running the Linksys firmware, then I believe that is the case. But some people have reported that they needed to reset it in redboot Jul 06 00:08:33 leesiulung: um, I lead the nslu2-linux project. Jul 06 00:09:45 so yes, I have contributed to the wiki a little bit ;-) Jul 06 00:09:59 rwhitby: ohhh... well then I owe you a special thanks for leading it!!! Jul 06 00:10:34 the best way to show your thanks to to improve the documentation on the wiki, or to give a donation (which is used for our project hardware infrastructure) Jul 06 00:10:39 rwhitby, I'm interested in developing on the nslu2 - what kinds of things do you need doing? Jul 06 00:11:12 Lunar_Lamp: let's talk on #nslu2-linux - that's the developer channel **** ENDING LOGGING AT Fri Jul 06 02:59:57 2007
