**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Sat Oct 06 02:59:56 2007 Oct 06 08:50:26 Hello everyone! Oct 06 08:52:20 I am using Debian on my Slug, the root filesystem is on a USB thumbdrive and there is a harddrive for my media files (the slug's primary purpose is being a UPnP server running MediaTomb). The HDD is a Maxtor 400 GB, it spins down nicely after I tweaked that with sdparm. Oct 06 08:54:00 So far so good, now my problem: The harddrive wakes up at 6:25 every morning, which is pretty annoying. This coincides with syslogd restarting. A friend of mine suggested it could be a cronjob that is waking up the drive. I have never dealt with cron until now, any suggestions where to look first? Oct 06 09:04:39 OK, solved. There was H 6 for everything in the crontab... Oct 06 12:18:42 is there a point to install samba2 on unslung? Oct 06 12:25:32 hi anyone here? Oct 06 12:25:59 if i put a webserver on like lighthttpd what happenns to the built inserver that wa spart of unslung Oct 06 12:26:21 nothing Oct 06 12:26:30 here is what I would do Oct 06 12:26:43 login to the unslung webserver (the config thingy) Oct 06 12:26:57 and change the port to 8080 (a typical alternative) Oct 06 12:27:10 then install lighttpd Oct 06 12:27:17 and it should default to 80 Oct 06 12:27:57 http://slug-ip/Management/setup.cgi?next_file=system.htm Oct 06 12:28:02 very bottom of page Oct 06 12:28:06 ok thanks alot :) Oct 06 12:28:10 Instant two webservers running on different ports! Good morning btw. And why would you want samba2? Oct 06 12:28:13 change "port number for http" to 8080 Oct 06 12:28:27 I'd install samba3 Oct 06 12:29:07 why would i need samba though, doesnt the nslu already recognize the drives and share them? im trying to setup transmission with this guide btw : http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Optware Oct 06 12:29:26 well, it comes with samba Oct 06 12:29:33 you can just upgrade it if you wish Oct 06 12:29:57 I like to have SWAT, so I upgraded to samba3 Oct 06 12:30:18 SWAT is a very nice tool if you prefer making changes in a graphical enviroment Oct 06 12:30:22 swat, is that the samba web interface for setup/etc? Oct 06 12:30:26 yes Oct 06 12:30:28 *nods* Oct 06 12:30:30 so just ipkg install samba3 and it upgrades it easy? Oct 06 12:30:42 well, not exactly Oct 06 12:30:44 one sec Oct 06 12:31:14 okay Oct 06 12:31:25 http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/Optware/Samba Oct 06 12:31:30 follow the instructions on that page Oct 06 12:31:34 it will walk you through it Oct 06 12:31:36 its pretty easy Oct 06 12:31:45 alright thanks :) Oct 06 12:31:59 also that guide i just posted here will that work with unslung or no? Oct 06 12:32:16 http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Optware <--this? Oct 06 12:32:42 yea Oct 06 12:32:47 I wouldn't use it Oct 06 12:32:50 stick with the nslu2 site Oct 06 12:32:57 dd-wrt is for routers Oct 06 12:33:24 http://nslu2-linux.org/ <--everything you need is right there Oct 06 12:33:47 okay, i found a guide on that site but it made me ify cuz it said transmission is goingthrough some changes so this may not work in the future Oct 06 12:33:52 http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/Optware/Packages <--the optware page Oct 06 12:34:27 like I said, they are not talking about the nslu2 on that dd-wrt site Oct 06 12:34:46 no no i mean like on nslu2 site it said that so i went to the dd-wrt site Oct 06 12:34:58 On the topic of other things you can load on your slug, did a bit of digging around the NetBSD site the other day (their 4.0 release is cumming up soonish): Oct 06 12:35:08 ftp://ftp5.freebsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-current/src/sys/arch/evbarm/nslu2/README Oct 06 12:35:34 Its from january 07, but the 4.0 releaselogs also have it as a supported platform. Oct 06 12:36:01 hmm, I wouldn't try that yet Oct 06 12:36:04 Dont seem to have fiksed the boot from flash stuff yet thu. But I like... Oct 06 12:36:06 you have to get into redboot Oct 06 12:36:20 JWJ: I sooo agree with you there. ;) Oct 06 12:36:48 scary place to be :) Oct 06 12:36:56 * JWJ bricked one already in it Oct 06 12:37:01 ouch Oct 06 12:37:12 sold it on ebay :) Oct 06 12:37:17 got $40 for a bricked nslu2 Oct 06 12:37:19 :) Oct 06 12:37:30 lmfao thats awesome thats like over half what i paid mine Oct 06 12:37:31 I even cleary stated, in the title and desc Oct 06 12:37:32 bricked Oct 06 12:37:52 they complain after? Oct 06 12:37:55 nope Oct 06 12:38:02 awesome lol Oct 06 12:38:09 didn't matter Oct 06 12:38:10 i got mine off ebay for 70 bucks Oct 06 12:38:12 they would have no case Oct 06 12:38:18 hmm Oct 06 12:38:19 when Oct 06 12:38:21 ? Oct 06 12:38:22 yea i kno, but alot of people make problems like that Oct 06 12:38:26 * JWJ has sold a ton of them on ebay Oct 06 12:38:28 umm like this week Oct 06 12:38:31 oh Oct 06 12:38:34 wasn't from me then Oct 06 12:38:50 ordered monday goti t tues i was suprised how fast shipping was Oct 06 12:38:51 * JWJ was about to say you may have very well bought it from me Oct 06 12:39:02 that wuda been cool lol Oct 06 12:39:16 ey, you are the one that sold me that bricked nslu on ebay! Oct 06 12:39:16 I make money off them Oct 06 12:39:18 buy they cheap Oct 06 12:39:22 like $40-$50 Oct 06 12:39:23 * widrone is just kidding. Oct 06 12:39:32 and resell them with unslung for $65 + $15 shipping Oct 06 12:39:36 nice u sold bricked for that much XD Oct 06 12:39:38 all in all, I get about $70 of that Oct 06 12:39:56 oh i shuda searched i cuda saved some time installing unslung for an extra 5 bucks Oct 06 12:40:13 not bad profit tho heh Oct 06 12:40:14 I'm out Oct 06 12:40:19 haven't sold any in a month or so Oct 06 12:40:28 use to have 2 or 3 listed at all times pretty much Oct 06 12:40:42 yea i only saw about 54 or 5 when i was looking Oct 06 12:40:47 *4 or 5 Oct 06 12:40:50 mine also all come with the cpu hack Oct 06 12:40:51 Impressive, they range from $25 to $135. That a wide choice I must say. Oct 06 12:41:04 so buying from me Oct 06 12:41:14 you get latest unslung and a 266Mhz slug Oct 06 12:41:54 if your slug isn't 266, I strongly recommened you doing it Oct 06 12:41:59 runs much better Oct 06 12:42:17 * JWJ uses finger nail clippers to remove the resistor Oct 06 12:42:19 works like a charm Oct 06 12:42:21 JWJ: That is a nice service you bring to ebay I must say, For the ones that are scared of popping cases and reflashing. Oct 06 12:42:39 I've sold them with hard drives a couple times Oct 06 12:42:53 with unslung and a few popular packages already installed and configged Oct 06 12:42:58 Agree, I got one de-resistored myself. Easy to do and works like a charm! Oct 06 12:42:58 last time I did that Oct 06 12:43:05 paid $110 for the hd and the nslu2 Oct 06 12:43:08 sold them for $190 Oct 06 12:44:53 * JWJ noticed walmart has nslu2s again Oct 06 12:45:05 at least the one nearest to me does Oct 06 12:45:11 they are $85 I think Oct 06 12:45:18 thats prety sweet Oct 06 12:45:41 lol i di dthe cpu hack myself and got the wrong resistor by accident, forunatly not adverse effects lol Oct 06 12:45:44 btw how do i run swat Oct 06 12:45:49 Almost all the local computershops in Oslo has stopped selling them, according to the ppl who work there norwegians are annoyed that it wont eat their NTFS disks. Oct 06 12:45:51 lucky Oct 06 12:46:03 But the new firmware from linksys has that rigth? Oct 06 12:46:07 mike390, those instructions tell you Oct 06 12:47:02 windrone, many places stop selling them because they say the newer routers are fully capable of file sharing and stuff Oct 06 12:47:19 the nslu2 is pretty lame with the stock firmware really Oct 06 12:47:27 But I was holdig out for the price drop! ;) Oct 06 12:47:48 when I got my first nslu2 Oct 06 12:47:50 I used it for a year Oct 06 12:47:55 before I found out about unslung Oct 06 12:47:58 Instead they just stopped stocking them. Oct 06 12:48:00 I one day thought to myself Oct 06 12:48:07 I bet someone has made alternative firmware for this Oct 06 12:48:22 I was very unpleased with the nslu2 at first Oct 06 12:48:29 the webserver is not what they make you think it is Oct 06 12:48:33 the FTP you can't uplaod Oct 06 12:48:53 I accualy had came across the linuxdevices 3part story (wasnt it?), I was facinated. Oct 06 12:49:25 have you tried turning yours into a print server yet? Oct 06 12:49:32 I got mine working as that :) Oct 06 12:50:13 still need to get an adapter cuz i got that really old parallel cable lol Oct 06 12:50:28 Im anti-printer, dont have one never will. Too meckanical for me, belts and wheels... Oct 06 12:50:47 rofl how do u print stuff then Oct 06 12:52:00 CUPS Oct 06 12:52:11 I got one from ebay Oct 06 12:52:21 it was $10 for a parallel to USB cable Oct 06 12:52:24 $20 at walmart Oct 06 12:52:31 yea ive been looking Oct 06 12:52:33 Heh, I dont! If I need it in a work assignment I use our (outsourced) printers at work. Oct 06 12:52:46 i dont have an /unslung/rc.xinetd so i used install ipkg mc xinetd and i stil dont have that file Oct 06 12:53:04 ipkg install xinetd Oct 06 12:53:36 i did lol Oct 06 12:54:14 And if anyone wants me to help with a printer, I look the rigth in the eyes and proclaim "Im siding with the trees...), usually gets them confused enough for me to slip away. Oct 06 12:54:23 ROFL Oct 06 12:56:15 do i just make rc.xinetd? Oct 06 12:56:23 you can try Oct 06 12:56:27 I don't really know Oct 06 12:56:28 mike390, no Oct 06 12:56:40 then what do i need to do caplink Oct 06 12:57:19 when you installed xinetd (which is different from inetd), it will be started via /opt/etc/init.d/S??xinetd Oct 06 12:57:37 this script kills in the 1st the linksys inetd, and starts then xinetd Oct 06 12:57:51 i need to run swat though and it said i needed to edit that file Oct 06 13:00:05 only add a config file (named swat) to /opt/etc/xinetd.d with this contents Oct 06 13:00:19 service swat Oct 06 13:00:19 { Oct 06 13:00:19 flags = REUSE Oct 06 13:00:19 socket_type = stream Oct 06 13:00:21 instances = 30 Oct 06 13:00:22 wait = no Oct 06 13:00:24 user = root Oct 06 13:00:26 server = /opt/sbin/swat Oct 06 13:00:30 log_on_success = HOST PID Oct 06 13:00:32 log_on_failure = HOST Oct 06 13:00:36 disable = no Oct 06 13:00:38 } Oct 06 13:01:25 and in /opt/etc/xinetd.conf you should adjust the only_from parameter to match your network configuration Oct 06 13:02:08 192.168.1.0/24 means the 192.168.1.x network up to 24? Oct 06 13:02:46 this means 192.168.1.0 - 192.168.1.254 Oct 06 13:03:04 255 or 254? Oct 06 13:03:09 1st 24 bits are equal Oct 06 13:03:19 * JWJ has always wondered too what /x means Oct 06 13:03:21 after an IP Oct 06 13:03:26 oh oka yea its good then thanks! Oct 06 13:03:35 yea me too i usually just left stuff alone lol Oct 06 13:03:46 and its 254 Oct 06 13:03:59 oh so the first 24 bits are the same Oct 06 13:04:08 .0 is the network, .255 is the broadcast, in this case Oct 06 13:04:20 ic Oct 06 13:05:29 I understand the broadcast Oct 06 13:05:32 but what about the network Oct 06 13:05:42 you assuming the router/host/whatnot is at .0? Oct 06 13:06:34 oh true Oct 06 13:06:37 no, .0 means the particular network, so you could use in a class c net max 254 host addresses, +.0 (255) + .255 (256) Oct 06 13:09:25 Classless Inter-Domain routing (CIDR), I thik its called the annotation that way. Oct 06 13:11:13 also btw do i need to make an rc.xinetd diversion script to run swat right? Oct 06 13:11:52 no, as i mentioned, xinetd kills 1st inetd (and /unslung/rc.xinetd deals with inetd) Oct 06 13:12:02 oh okay Oct 06 13:12:21 so i just restart xinetd Oct 06 13:12:26 and swat will run? Oct 06 13:12:50 when /opt/sbin/swat exists, probably yes Oct 06 13:13:39 ok Oct 06 13:16:04 whats the swat default password >.< Oct 06 13:18:28 user root with pw of root should work Oct 06 13:19:11 nope... Oct 06 13:21:37 is there a way to reset the passworDS? Oct 06 13:22:40 according to the fact, that my /opt/etc/samba/smbpasswd contains no user root, myself assuming that swat uses /etc/passwd for authentifications, so root with roots pw should work Oct 06 13:38:27 mine shows admin:502:F0D412BD764FFE81AAD3B435B51404EE:209C6174DA490CAEB422F3FA5A7AE634:[U ]:LCT-3F136BA9: Oct 06 14:14:43 how do i reset swat password i cant login Oct 06 21:03:20 Hmm, Is there no way of installing alsa on the slug? Oct 06 21:06:49 ? Of course there is - it should be there by default IIRC. Oct 06 21:07:20 s/there/in the feeds? Oct 06 21:08:30 You'll need to ipkg install the various kernel drivers, and you'll need an app. But many folks have done audio on the slug, and the OSS stuff is pretty much deprecated. Oct 06 21:09:52 ah, ok. I've got some reading to do then. I just tried the "ipkg install alsa" when i should have searched for the right kernel-drivers Oct 06 21:11:22 Just check any Linux guide for the list of drivers involved in ALSA, the kernel is the same (2.6.x) whether its Debian, or SlugOS. Oct 06 21:11:42 Thanks, mwester. Oct 06 21:12:30 by the way, Can you recommend a good light way app for? Oct 06 21:12:53 ... this is what happens when Swedish people after drinking tries to spell lightweight Oct 06 21:12:59 light way... sigh Oct 06 23:12:53 how do i install a bittorrent client with a web interfact on unslung, i looked all over but none of the tutorials work Oct 07 02:35:59 how do i install a bittorrent client with a web interfact on unslung, i looked all over but none of the tutorials work Oct 07 02:51:17 check ctorrent Oct 07 02:53:08 and ctcs http://www.rahul.net/dholmes/ctorrent/ctcs.html Oct 07 02:54:52 does that have a webgui? Oct 07 02:55:19 ahh looks promising Oct 07 02:55:21 ill try it **** ENDING LOGGING AT Sun Oct 07 02:59:57 2007
