**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Tue Oct 30 02:59:56 2007 Oct 30 03:00:09 i am thinking that im limited in running unslung instead of something like slugos Oct 30 03:00:57 installing make now :-D Oct 30 03:02:47 klemmer19: ipkg install optware-devel Oct 30 03:03:09 Thanks eno -- you type faster than I :) Oct 30 03:03:40 awesome Oct 30 03:03:53 klemmer19: Run make within the folder you extracted. Oct 30 03:03:57 so am i embarking on something a novice linux user should not do? Oct 30 03:03:58 * eno does not know anything about foo2zjs Oct 30 03:04:27 klemmer19: are you printing from Windows machines and using the NSLU2 as a print server -- or do you want to print from the NSLU2 itself? Oct 30 03:04:28 if foo2zjs is a small package you can try make and build it natively Oct 30 03:04:29 klemmer19: Use it. Break it and start over! It's the best way to learn. Oct 30 03:05:05 i am printing from mainly os x (sometimes but rarely windows) - i will never be printing from the NSLU2 Oct 30 03:06:06 If that is the case, you may find that you do not really need foo2zjs, as the driver on the Windows machine will translate. Oct 30 03:06:36 * mwester-laptop does not use any printer driver on his cups system. Oct 30 03:06:43 but the windows machine i MIGHT print from will rarely be on Oct 30 03:07:18 Is it not a networked printer? Oct 30 03:07:41 the printer is hooked up to the NSLU2 directly via USB hub Oct 30 03:07:51 Oh, god. USB printer? Oct 30 03:08:16 lol - yup HP LaserJet 1018 Oct 30 03:08:24 klemmer19: the purpose of cups in that case is to make the printer into a networked printer, the print driver still runs on the system that does the print command or operation. Oct 30 03:08:46 So you don't need the driver on the NSLU2, if you do not originate a print operation on the NSLU2 itself. Oct 30 03:08:50 so i am wasting my time with foo2zjs? Oct 30 03:08:58 Probably. Oct 30 03:09:29 Think of the NSLU2 with CUPS as a "raw" device, just passing on the data stream presented by Windows. Oct 30 03:09:34 Or os x for that matter. Oct 30 03:09:47 so are there simple enough instructions i can find to make this printer a networked printer in cups? Oct 30 03:10:02 I followed the instructions on the NSLU2 wiki. Oct 30 03:10:16 klemmer19: Yeah: Plug it into one of the OSX boxes, and have it shared from there. :-P Oct 30 03:10:34 * mwester-laptop rolls his eyes... Oct 30 03:10:49 yeah yeah - i actually have two of these printers... the other one is plugged into an Airport Express and is shared that way Oct 30 03:11:37 its a big house - so id like to have two shared but do not always have machines on - except for small wonderful boxes like the NSLU2 Oct 30 03:11:59 This is kindof random, but... has anyone tried building a wearable computer around an nslu2? Oct 30 03:13:18 I have a LaserJet 2200D connected to mine, so that I can put the printer in a central location in the house (it's shared with the family). The little box fitgs better than a full-size computer ;) Oct 30 03:13:37 nyef: I think it was discussed - check the mailing list archives? Oct 30 03:13:54 what does http://www.justin.tv/ use? Oct 30 13:13:20 Struggling to unsling my box with a 500GB disk to be mounted on disk1. Can anyone help? I'm using codepage 437, and have tried to format the disk when using this codepage/language setting. If I boot with the disk it is recognised correctly. If I boot up w/o disk, and put it in as disk1, it is not recognised correctly, only as a 6MB disk. On disk2 it is correctly identified. If I monitor what happens during the mount phase, it appears Oct 30 13:13:20 to be briefly mounted correctly, but is then unmounted again (during the brief period it is mounted as /dev/sdb1 and 2 on /share/hdd/data and conf -- but it is then umounted again). Any ideas? Oct 30 13:19:18 ... also, it appears I can mount the partitions manually and then the web interface correctly identifies the disk. Is this a safe approach? Oct 30 13:32:17 pnoman: Probably not a safe approach. From your description, it's clear that the Linksys code is mounting the disk, but then it fails some sort of checks that the code does, and it rejects it. Oct 30 13:33:35 Check the output from dmesg, and also /var/log/messages, see if there is anything in there that would indicate a problem. Oct 30 13:41:04 ok, will check and come back. Thanks for hint. Oct 30 15:51:07 Checked dmesg and messages. Looks like the NSLU2 thought I had mounted the disk 31 times (which I hadn't) and complained. Tried to fsck it via telnet, but that failed with a memory error... Ran fsck on a linux machine, which succeeded. But then when mounting it on the NSLU2, it appeared like a FAT filesystem. So now I try to reformat it while in disk2 position and hope for the best. Strange, it appears. Oct 30 15:57:19 the joy of a slug! Oct 30 16:13:39 pnoman: Sounds like you're fairly comfortable with Linux. You might find that SlugOS or Debian on the device would behave in a more "normal" fashion compared to the Linksys-based Unslung distro. Oct 30 16:15:57 Yeah, I'm kind of getting to the same conclusion ;-( I've been fiddling with it for some time now, and no matter what, when the (large) disk is plugged into disk1, it ends up having it mounted incorrectly. And even after a proper fsck (which I eventually managed to run and have the disk recognized) it still shows up having too many connects ;-( Oct 30 16:16:18 mwester, which distro is then best? SlugOS or Debian? Oct 30 16:16:40 ... for a "simple" box that should run basically samba, ntp and firefly? Oct 30 16:16:48 back when i first got a slug, i fried a few times with unslung, but my freecom disk didnt seem to 'kick in' in time, in the end i moved to debian and its been fine Oct 30 16:16:53 *tried Oct 30 16:17:11 so you're happy with debian, I guess? Oct 30 16:17:13 i run samba/mtdaap/apache/irc Oct 30 16:17:33 yes its been great. i installed when the 'installer' wasnt recommended, so i think i use the bootstrap method Oct 30 16:17:45 alkthough its a long time ago ;) Oct 30 16:17:47 Depends on your needs. Debian is a full release, with everything you would expect. SlugOS is a small distro (will run (barely) in the internal flash). You won't have the application breadth with SlugOS, but the basics are there. Oct 30 16:17:50 ok -- just about what I would need to as well, just adding ntp. Oct 30 16:18:41 sounds like I need to study it a bit more then, but maybe debian is then best. I'm already running a bunch of debian based distro's here (ubuntu now, that is). Oct 30 16:19:06 The Debian installer is currently broken, IIRC, there are alternatives on the wiki somewhere. SlugOS (aka OpenSlug) is at the 3.10 release -- easy install. A newer SlugOS is due out soon (waiting on more reports from alpha testers) Oct 30 16:19:41 Ooh. New SlugOS? Oct 30 16:19:47 hm... I was actually going the standard unslung route to save time fiddling with distros and packages... Oct 30 16:19:47 But of course. Oct 30 16:20:52 pnoman: Yep. I have a couple of Unslung installations for that reason. They work well, as long as you don't try to depart too far from the "Linksys" way of doing things. And it seems that there are known issues with the Linksys code and large drives (where large seems to be > about 250GB) Oct 30 16:20:52 I guess I can look forward to that. Oct 30 16:21:11 nyef: What features are you looking for? Oct 30 16:21:54 mwester, I guess you're right. Thing is, I have 4 of these boxes to set up with a total of 10 disks (some spare backups)... and the disks are all 500 GB, so I guess I need to go back to the drawing board! Oct 30 16:22:39 a slug farm Oct 30 16:23:09 pnoman: You can also manually set up the disks, and avoid the native formatting step -- that's what I'd do. The wiki has some information on that. Oct 30 16:23:36 well my install has been trouble free, i some times wake up sweating about a disk crash which ends my year of trouble free slugging Oct 30 16:24:38 mwester: Nothing in particular. I just got the nslu2 because I thought it'd make a great port target for a compiler. Oct 30 16:25:38 bamseenio, yes, kind of farming here ;-) Oct 30 16:26:45 mwester, that may be a good idea! So you mean I can prep the disk elsewhere and have it boot automatically up as an unling'ed devices? Did't know that but will check. Thanks! Oct 30 16:44:12 mwester: I don't find the right topic, but it is likely that I just don't find the right keyword. Could you pass me a hint (just a keyword would be dandy), thanks. Oct 30 22:17:30 hi Oct 30 22:35:42 i cant decide which distro i should use Oct 30 22:35:56 with debian i should have cups support? Oct 30 22:36:07 probably, yes Oct 30 22:36:13 k Oct 30 22:36:25 and with unslung, too Oct 30 22:36:53 but the whole question depends on your linux/unix knowledge Oct 30 22:37:22 maybe that openslug/slugos is an option, too Oct 30 22:37:38 its some month ago, when i playd with my slug :D Oct 30 22:39:01 maybe, that http://jrbnet.de/joomla/content/view/38/58/ could help to find out the right distribution Oct 30 22:39:11 i think i have 'some'linux knowledges Oct 30 22:39:52 white on black.. brilliant color choice ... thx Oct 30 22:40:53 (main use is presenting pictures, and therefore a black background is helpful ;)) Oct 30 22:41:15 k Oct 30 22:41:31 but, me thinks, go ahead and give debianslug a try Oct 30 22:41:43 lets deactivate css :) Oct 30 22:42:42 i have a hp deskjet ... ugly printer, but beautifull cups support, and i want do share it in LAN with one win 2k client Oct 30 22:42:58 the whole site is a proof of concept, i apologize ;) Oct 30 22:43:01 and some smb stuff ... thats all for now Oct 30 22:43:36 caplink811-log, the site is ok ... its pretty cool, if the site works without css Oct 30 22:43:44 or with (: Oct 30 22:44:33 oh a german article Oct 30 22:47:22 neues stand da jetz nich für mich (: Oct 30 22:47:31 k Oct 30 22:49:59 cups and smb/cifs is possible with unslung, as well as with debianslug, and maybe with openslug/slugos too... so, the choice is yours, depends on the fun factor Oct 30 22:51:11 cant find the aktuall pwd ... im sure there is an openslug already Oct 30 23:54:26 hello Oct 31 00:09:08 damn network stuff Oct 31 00:20:20 the slug gets no ip adress :| Oct 31 01:41:40 Any idea on when the Debian installer will be fixed? **** ENDING LOGGING AT Wed Oct 31 02:59:57 2007
