**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Sat Apr 05 02:59:57 2008 Apr 05 09:18:48 hi, I'm a bit cofunsed abotut using optware on a bootable usb-device running openwrt on NSL2. In this guide http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/OpenWrt/HomePage it says I should do mount /dev/sda1 /opt/ but if I look at this guide http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/OpenWRT/BootFromUsbDevice it says I should mount -t ext2 /dev/sda1 /mnt. Does this really contradict as I interpret it? Apr 05 09:21:30 and another question, is it alright to install packages from default package repositories added by default when intalling openwrt or shoul you only stick to optware packages after you started to use optware to prevent obfuscation? Apr 05 11:02:57 guess it's a simple question but really want to be sure about things since I haven't got the optware to work properly yet. Apr 05 11:03:24 do I have to do the last steps here http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/OpenWrt/HomePage Apr 05 11:03:47 that consern optware, over again after I did the things here http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/OpenWRT/BootFromUsbDevice Apr 05 11:04:08 since I then have a all new environment so to speak. Apr 05 11:15:59 yes you have to do all that stuff Apr 05 11:16:11 and that first line you said: no it does not contradict Apr 05 11:16:41 mount /dev/sda1 /opt/ and mount -t ext2 /dev/sda1 /mnt are basically the same thing Apr 05 11:16:52 except one mounts to /opt and the other to /mnt Apr 05 11:16:57 yes Apr 05 11:17:19 you could mount where ever you like Apr 05 11:17:32 yes of course =) Apr 05 11:18:01 what are you using your nslu2 for? Apr 05 11:19:32 but when I've installed packages after previous trials with optware I always got errors that /bin/update-alternatives isn't existing I think. Which makes sense since it's in /opt/bin/update-alternatives. Hang on, will try to install apache again which always generated these problems Apr 05 11:20:06 right now it's a file server which uses samba so I can't get access to file in windows as well Apr 05 11:20:19 and my intention is to hos a basic webserver on it as well, Apr 05 11:20:48 maybe you should consider another firmware, like slugos Apr 05 11:21:03 I set up samba with default packages from repository added by openwrt since I ran into problems using optware of the kind above Apr 05 11:21:12 hmm...not preferably Apr 05 11:21:17 why not? Apr 05 11:26:11 slugos don't come with webif out of the box, right? Apr 05 11:27:49 anyway, brb, should try to install apache once again Apr 05 11:29:43 no, that is something that is specific to that firmware ... But openwrt as I understand it is more for people who are wish to run without a storage device Apr 05 11:31:31 I'm guessing openwrt's web interface has nothing to manage storage with Apr 05 11:31:50 probably not ... I think its only for networking info Apr 05 11:32:08 which, he doesn't really have much use for if he's just doing file sharing and web server Apr 05 11:33:02 I probably get most of the useful information he gets from phpsysinfo on my slug Apr 05 11:33:19 I will probably be doing more "advanced" stuff in the future so I prefer openwrt. Apr 05 11:33:23 http://ww2.jwjkp.com/phpsysinfo :) Apr 05 11:33:35 advanced like what? Apr 05 11:33:47 you realize slugos has more capabilities? Apr 05 11:35:30 openwrt: 2000 packages Apr 05 11:35:35 slugos: 5000 Apr 05 11:36:32 no I don't remember the exact reason I choose openwrt right now and not slugos. I followed recomemendation from a friend and read some things that didn't attracted me with slugos/attracted me with openwrt when I choose it. Apr 05 11:37:13 hey, its your call ... I'm just giving you -my- suggestion Apr 05 11:38:09 might use it as squeezebox music server later on Apr 05 11:38:13 thanx ;) Apr 05 11:40:05 here's one reason, The SLUG has an active user community with several popular firmware distros (e.g. Debian Slug) so why bother to port OpenWRT? Well, most likely you agree with OpenWRT's minimalist philosophy and would rather spend your time adding the features you want rather than deleting those you don't. Apr 05 11:40:22 but my intention wasn't to come here providing an argumentation about openwrt =) Apr 05 11:42:05 slugos doesn't really come with anything Apr 05 11:42:08 at all Apr 05 11:42:26 I think that is more in reference to like unslung Apr 05 11:44:21 doesn't kamikaze support more drivers since it's running on later kernel version? Apr 05 11:45:13 slugos has the most recent kernel version Apr 05 11:45:14 sorry Apr 05 11:45:27 ok Apr 05 11:45:45 not by much, but it does Apr 05 11:45:49 slugos: 2.6.21.7 Apr 05 11:45:59 openwrt: 2.6.21.6 Apr 05 11:46:17 they would support basically the same most likely Apr 05 11:46:37 yes it seems so Apr 05 11:47:55 guess the matrix is a bit out dated then http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/FAQ/FirmwareMatrix Apr 05 11:48:41 yea Apr 05 11:49:45 update it Apr 05 11:49:47 if you like Apr 05 11:56:27 have you tried kamikaze yourself, just curious about your experiences? Apr 05 11:58:27 don't feel I have the knowledge myself to start changing things in the wiki, you seem more competent Apr 05 14:06:11 Hi everybody :) Apr 05 14:12:18 hello Apr 05 21:16:46 hi Apr 05 21:17:03 hi Apr 05 21:17:31 i try to follow this tuto Apr 05 21:17:33 http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/Optware/Btpd Apr 05 21:17:50 not working at all Apr 05 21:17:55 what to do ? Apr 05 21:18:52 root@OpenWrt:/mnt/usb/usr/lib# ipkg install bash coreutils btpd findutils Apr 05 21:18:54 Package bash (3.2-1) installed in root is up to date. Apr 05 22:43:54 I'm fighting with PUTTY Apr 05 22:44:22 I'm triying to copy a good "server.met" file to the .amule directory but I cannot Apr 05 22:44:49 I'm not a unix user so its probably very easy but I cannot do it Apr 05 22:54:23 hey Apr 05 23:33:29 hello Apr 05 23:33:33 helpme please Apr 06 00:02:00 A friend of mine is installing Debian.
