**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Thu Jun 12 02:59:57 2008 Jun 12 06:23:46 hey guys, anybody here? Jun 12 06:24:46 my slug doesn't seem to want to boot anymore. It gets stuck with status LED alternating between orange and green and ethernet and DISK1 green Jun 12 06:25:13 I remember shutting down the slug with a command to do fsck on next reboot, could that be it? Jun 12 06:32:29 guys, need hlp with nslu2 Jun 12 06:37:24 what´s up sonofnet? Jun 12 06:43:31 I dint setup my nslu2 with the original firmware, and flashed it to Angstrom. I couldnt telnet to it, so I flashed SlugOS/BE. Same - couldn't telnet or ssh. Now I end up with linksys firmware (NSLU2_V23R63) and the setup from the disc (that came with the box) cant see my disc, and I cant setup nslu2. Jun 12 06:53:02 sonofnet: what do you mean with 'the setup from the disc cant see my disc' Jun 12 06:59:20 there is a disc in the box with the nslu2. with this disc u setup ip and other parametrs of the nslu2 Jun 12 07:01:53 i know Jun 12 07:02:06 and it doesnt see my nslu2 Jun 12 07:02:12 ah Jun 12 07:02:16 so I cant set it up Jun 12 07:02:29 you said it doesn't see your disc so i was a bit confused Jun 12 07:03:00 it looks like a disc in the setup window Jun 12 07:03:14 so, after fiddling around with alternative firmware you reflashed the slug with the original firmware right? Jun 12 07:03:22 yes Jun 12 07:03:27 6.2 Jun 12 07:03:30 6.3 Jun 12 07:09:07 I really wouldn't know how to fix that. it may be a dhcp problem (your slug may be located at 192.168.1.77) but i'm not sure. i haven't been using the thing for that long Jun 12 07:09:14 maybe someone else can help you out Jun 12 07:10:08 or maybe google around a bit Jun 12 07:11:00 maybe this will sort of help? http://forums.linksys.com/linksys/board/message?board.id=Network_Storage&message.id=111 Jun 12 07:25:23 thx for the tip Jun 12 17:31:45 greetings Jun 12 21:28:29 Hi, i have a question. I run openslug 3.10. Is it a good idea to upgrade to version 4.8? I can't find package slugos-native Jun 12 21:28:46 and i used it on version 3.10 Jun 12 21:29:32 I tried mono, it compiled etc on my linux pc, but i don't understand it completely Jun 12 21:30:36 Is it nog a risk to run on version 3.10? (security, old packages eg?). Jun 12 21:31:15 I don't see any updates anymore.... Jun 12 21:37:19 Who can give me some advice? (nslu2 is connected to the internet, webserver, mailserver, nameserver, samba etc). Jun 12 21:38:43 i thought 4.8 was still under beta/development? Jun 12 21:39:43 hi, yes i read that. I tried it on my second nslu2, but this evening it crashed after a update. Jun 12 21:40:07 but version 3.10 gives me no more updates for a long time. Jun 12 21:42:01 All versions are beta. We only release beta -- this is to ensure that everyone understands that the release is not of production quality and that there are certain expectations of the users of the releases. Jun 12 21:42:57 Oke, i understand that. But it is very stable. Jun 12 21:43:44 4.8-beta is the most recent. There is no need to upgrade from 3.10-beta if that older version is working. "ipkg upgrade" is evil. Just as any blind software update is evil, regardless of the operating system. The idea of regularly updating without testing is another evil in the long line of evils users have been trained to do by Microsoft. Jun 12 21:44:36 So, if there are no updates to a release, thats a good thing -- but don't update unless you have a known problem that you are trying to solve, and don't update without a backup. Jun 12 21:45:30 Maybe the best solution then is run 3.10, so i can compile a new webserver, named, openssh to upgrade to the last versions of the software that connect to the internet. Jun 12 21:46:33 To be save. (oke nothing is save). Jun 12 21:46:33 How did you come to that conclusion from what I wrote? Jun 12 21:47:04 If you have a need, then upgrade. Jun 12 21:47:25 hi, yes i read that. I tried it on my second nslu2, but this evening it crashed after a update. Jun 12 21:47:33 I was commenting on this line you wrote. Jun 12 21:48:38 Oke, yes i was experimenting with lighttpd but i run in trouble with php Jun 12 21:49:37 i did ipkg update, ipkg upgrade and there where updates. New version of busybox etc. Jun 12 21:49:37 In any case, if it's working, leave it be. If it's not, you'll not find any new development or testing going on with SlugOS 3.10. Jun 12 21:51:25 Oke then i go backup with my second openslug to 3.10 and install the same software on it. So i have a back-up system. Jun 12 21:51:39 backup = back Jun 12 21:52:46 If it's doing something important, that's a really good idea. Jun 12 21:53:32 You might even consider something like rsync to keep the data sync'd between the two. Jun 12 21:53:47 not important, it's running my little website and that sort of things. But it does its job great. Jun 12 21:55:15 I have a 3.10 system that runs my DHCP, DNS, network boots my systems, and runs as an OpenVPN endpoint -- I keep telling myself I need to upgrade it to 4.8-beta, but as long as it runs as well as it does, I never seem to get around to it. Jun 12 21:56:33 my concern is/was security. There are sometimes bug's.... Jun 12 21:57:04 Agreed. A web server is probably more of a concern than OpenVPN. Jun 12 22:03:14 Thanks for the info, i set my second nslu2 to 3.10 and compile there the new webserver and that sort of things. Jun 12 22:04:18 For the rest wait fo 4.8 when it's has a native environment. Maybe upgrade it then. Jun 12 22:06:57 Don't wait for the native package; just install the items separately. The native package is deprecated, but it really contained nothing (it was just an empty meta-package that depended on all the other packages that you really wanted). Jun 12 22:07:21 The native package was defined to be the set of software needed to build SlugOS on SlugOS -- and that's no longer possible. Jun 12 22:09:01 All the tools you need for native building of applications should be available; just things like Monotone will not be present. **** ENDING LOGGING AT Fri Jun 13 02:59:57 2008
